Pokemon Go Tyrogue Evolution Guide

As part of the latest Johto update to Pokémon GO, a new Baby Pokémon called Tyrogue is now available. You can get this Pokémon from hatching a 5km egg and only if that egg has been obtained since the Gen 2 update went live. Tyrogue is a fighting Pokémon and it can evolve three ways.
This is Tyrogue:
Those who have been playing Pokémon GO for a while may be familiar with two Fighting-type Pokémon called Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan but since the Johto update, there is now another called Hitmontop. Tyrogue will evolve into one of these three depending on which stat is the highest.
Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Hitmontop
- If Tyrogue’s attack is higher than other stats, then he will evolve into Hitmonlee,
- If Tyrogue’s defense is higher than other stats, then he will evolve into Hitmonchan,
- If Tyrogue’s Stamina/HP is higher than other, stats then he will evolve into Hitmontop,
- However, if the stats are equal, then the evolution will be random.

The top example of a pre-evolution is of course Pichu, the baby Pokemon that becomes Pikachu, but Gen 2 adds a bunch of them to the game including Magby, Smoochum and Tyrogue. Tyrogue can be evolved into three different Pokemon, making it similar to how Eevee can be evolved into a number of different Pokemon each with different skills. Much like Eevee the way you evolve into the potential new Pokemon Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop depends on some external factors beyond you triggering the evolution. For the record, it’s not possible to actually influence the stats of your Tyrogue – it’s entirely random, so cross your fingers and hope for good luck. Pokemon that hatch from eggs are more likely to be quicker, and 5km eggs are your fastest way of potentially farming multiple Tyrogue unless you’re near a natural nest of the creatures.
As mentioned a couple of times above, if you need to find out which of your stats is top with Tyrogue, the quickest way is to use the appraisal tool you find when you view a Pokemon – the professor that helps you out will give you information on the Pokemon, and though vague it does outright tell you the best of its stats.
Don’t forget that to farm the candy needed to evolve Tyrogue you can set Tyrogue as your Buddy Pokemon and walk with it – as you do, you’ll be rewarded candy every 5km.

How To Get Tyrogue
The best method of acquiring Tyrogue is via eggs. It is available in these types of eggs:
- 2km eggs
- 5km eggs
- 7km eggs
Each of these eggs could be acquired as rewards for different events throughout Pokémon GO such as the Pokémon GO: Tour Johto, Rivals Week, and Johto Celebration event amongst others.

To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmontop
Hitmontop is really the Tyrogue evolution that most people want – it’s a new Pokemon for generation 2 and honestly – it’s cool. I mean, it spins about on its spiky head like a spinning top and smashes people with kicks. It’s good stuff. Anyway, to get Hitmontop you’ll need Tyrogue’s highest stat to be its Stamina / HP. If that’s the case, when it evolves it’ll evolve into Hitmontop.
To find out if Stamina / HP are Tyrogue’s top stat, use the appraisal tool and get the professor to look at your Pokemon. The professor will flat-out tell you its most impressive stat.

How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonlee Hitmonchan And Hitmontop
The first step to evolving Tyrogue is… well, it’s to catch a Tyrogue. These little beasts can be found out int he wild as with any Pokemon, but they mercifully can also be found inside 5km Pokemon Eggs, as depicted on our Pokemon Go Egg Chart. Tyrogue is an ‘uncommon’ egg hatch, which makes it a little less unlikely than basic Pokemon but still not actually that difficult to hatch – so get walking and hatching!
Once you have your hands on your Tyrogue you’ll want to look into evolving it. As with Eevee’s evolutions, exactly how it evolves is based on an external factor: though where Eevee it’s down to the Pokemon’s name or a random chance, Tyrogue’s evolutions are a lot more predictable, as shown in the video above from YouTube user Yanrique Wright.

Now that Pokemon Go has added all the Gen 2 Pokemon to the game, some all new ways to reach classic Pokemon are available in the form of ‘baby’ Pokemon, or as we briefly called them in the late 90s, ‘pre-evolutions’. These are basically versions of Pokemon that evolve into Pokemon we’re already familiar with from Gen 1.

How To Evolve Tyrogue
Tyrogues evolution form depends on which of the three IV stats it has the highest:
- If Tyrogues highest IV is attack, it will evolve into Hitmonlee.
- If Tyrogues highest IV is defense, it will evolve into Hitmonchan.
- If Tyrogues highest IV is HP, it will evolve into Hitmontop.
- If Tyrogue has two highest IVs, it will randomly evolve into one of forms that are respective for each stat.
- If Tyrogue has all three IV stats equal, it will randomly evolve into one of three forms with a 50% chance of becoming Hitmontop and a 50% chance of becoming either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan.

To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonchan
Jackie Chan-inspired punch master Hitmonchan was available in the wild already, but if you want to evolve it from Tyrogue you’ll need to make sure Defence is its highest stat. Feed it the 25 candy if that’s the case and out pops Hitmonchan.
If you need to find out Tyrogue’s top stat use the in-game appraisal tool. The Pokemon Professor will let you know which of its stats is most impressive, and for Hitmonchan you need to hope for defence.

How To Evolve Tyrogue In Pokemon Go
Tyrogue is one of the few Pokemon with multiple evolution paths that carry over into Pokemon GO.
Tyrogue is a Fighting-type Baby Pokemon that can be found in Pokemon GO. It can be hatched from an Egg. What Pokemon hatches from what type of Egg can change at any time.
Once obtained, Tyrogue can evolve into one of three Pokemon. Like with Eevee in Pokemon GO, the evolution can be determined prior to triggering it. Unlike Eevee, the evolution cannot be manipulated with something like a nickname.
How Does Tyrogue’s Evolution Path Work In Pokemon Go
Tyrogue is a very unique Pokemon due to its three potential evolutions, but it involves a complicated process.
Tyrogue was introduced in the Johto region as a baby form of Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop. Fortunately, its evolution in Pokemon GO works almost the same way it did in Generation II.
Each evolution operates totally differently from the others, so trainers will want to make sure they evolve Tyrogue into the Pokemon they want.

How To Get Hitmonlee Hitmonchan Or Hitmontop In Pokemon Go
To find out which Pokemon Tyrogue is going to evolve to, all trainers need to do is take a look at its IVs and find which stat is the largest. If the Attack stat is the largest, it will evolve into Hitmonlee. If Defense is largest, Tyrogue will become Hitmonchan, and it will turn into Hitmontop if Stamina is largest.
Oddly, this means that a perfect IV Tyrogue isnt really worth keeping around. If all IVs are equal, then Tyrogues evolution becomes RNG based. If trainers want a specific evolution, theyre better off finding a different Tyrogue with the necessary stats. Trainers can always evolve a perfect IV Tyrogue for the XP, though .
What makes this decision so critical is that all three evolutions perform differently in PvP and raids. In terms of GO Battle League, Hitmontop is actually ranked highest of the three.
This might sound a bit odd since Hitmontop has the lowest Attack out of the Tyrogue evolutions. This Pokemon has the best defensive stats, though . Hitmontop also gets access to Counter, which is definitely in the top tier of Fighting-type moves.
Trainers who are looking for something more offensive might want to look for Hitmonchan. 193 is a pretty decent Attack stat, but Hitmonchan can increase it with Power-up Punch. Like Hitmontop, this Pokemon also gets Counter. Hitmonchan can also run Thunder Punch to have something to hit Azumarill.
How Do You Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmontop
Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee from Gen 1 have a new base form in Pokémon Go Gen 2. It’s named Tyrogue and, if you had Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan before, their Candy has now been merged into a combined Tyrogue Candy. Catch or hatch Tyrogue and have 25 of those Candy, and you can evolve into Hitmontop… or Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan.
Yeah, it’s a split evolution and it’s complicated. Well, it’s not as complicated as evolving Eevee in Umbreon or Espeon but it does have a difficulty level all it’s own: It totally depends on the stats of the Tyrogue you want to evolve. Whichever stat is highest determines the Hitmon you get:
- Hitmonlee when Attack is the highest stat.
- Himonchan when Defense is the highest stat.
- Hitmontops when HP is the highest stat.
If two or even all three stats are equally high, sadly, it becomes random.

How to use: You need to know your Pokemon’s exact level. To find exactly what level your Pokémon is, power up your Pokémon following this chart until you’re certain of your level from Stardust cost changes.
A Pokémon’s minimum level is 1.

How To Obtain And Hatch 5km And 7km Eggs
- 5km eggs may be randomly dispensed by spinning the sign on a Pokéstop or Gym
- 7km eggs are received in gifts sent from other Pokémon GO players
- You can only carry a maximum of nine eggs at a time eggs will not drop if you already have nine eggs
- Once youve got the egg you want, stick it in an incubator and go for a walk rinse and repeat until you get your Tyrogue

Tyrogue Evolution: How To Get Hitmontop Hitmonchan And Hitmonlee
Just as getting Tyrogue is reminiscent of the games it originally featured in, its branching evolution options are handled in a way inspired by the rules of the handheld series. Whereas those games determine the evolution based on the Attack and Defense stats of your Tyrogue, in Pokémon GO specific Attack, Defense and HP stats are associated with each evolution:
- Hitmonlee is associated with Attack
- Hitmonchan is associated with Defense
- Hitmontop is associated with HP
Thankfully, checking a Pokémons IVs has become very simple since a July 2019 update to the appraisal feature so there’s no need to use an IV Checker tool to figure out what you’re going to get. Its now a simple case of checking the appraisal feature on your Pokémon’s status page, and seeing which bar is longest.
Between bar length and the icon provided on the evolve button, the screenshots below clearly illustrate how you can now easily tell which Tyrogue evolution you will get for your 25 candies:
- If Attack IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonlee
- If Defense IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan
- If HP IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan
But what if your Tyrogue has two or more highest IVs of equal value? You will then receive a random evolution from among the valid options, For example:
