When Do You Get Lucky In Pokemon Go Best
You can get random Lucky Pokémon by trading Pokémon with your friends. If you are trading, there is a small chance that your Pokémon will become Lucky. Both Pokémon are always lucky if one of them is lucky. According to a study by The Silph Road, Pokémon are more likely to be lucky if they are caught long ago.
How Do I Catch A Lucky Pokmon
Lucky Pokémon are obtained exclusively by trading you can’t catch a Lucky Pokémon in the wild.
Trade a Pokémon, and there’s a chance that it will receive the Lucky status. Though the community hasn’t quite figured out the specifics, it appears that a Pokémon has an increasingly higher chance of becoming Lucky during a trade the longer you’ve owned it.
So, for example, a Pokémon caught in 2016 has a much higher chance of becoming Lucky when traded than a Pokémon caught in 2018.
If both of the Pokémon in the trade are different ages one from 2016 and the other from 2018, for example the community suspects that Pokémon GO will calculate the average age of the Pokémon.
Remember that this is all down to chance, so it’s entirely possible that a brand new Pokémon will become Lucky during a trade, and that an ancient one from 2016 will not become Lucky.
We’ll update this when the community understands the system a lot better.

Should I Wait Until Best Friends Before Trading For Ivs
Would I benefit immediately from having this Pokemon?
Is Pokemon storage space a problem for either party?
Will a future trade be impossible ?
If the answer is yes to any of the questions, then trade now. Otherwise, hold off until reaching best friends to maximize the chance of obtaining a high IV Pokemon. Waiting will also age the Pokemon, increasing the likelihood that it will become lucky.

The Secrets Of Traded Pokmon: Lucky Rates
2019-05-24: Since this study was published, the 75% Lucky rate for July-August 2016 Pokémon it references was called into question multiple times. The Silph Research Group has conducted more research into these Lucky rates and guaranteed trades involving July-August Pokémon. Due to a new understanding of guaranteed trades, the rates for July-August 2016 Pokémon as presented in this article are likely incorrect, details can be found in our more current publication, here.
On the 4th of February, Niantic announced the Lunar New Year event. In a Pokémon GO first, this event boosted the rate at which Lucky Pokémon could be received. This has heightened interest in Lucky rates in general, but the question remains what are the regular, unboosted rates in the first place?
Fortunately, the Silph Research Group has completed over 9,000 trades since changes to the Lucky Trade system were announced. We can now confidently reveal that each year a Pokémon ages, it increases its chances of becoming Lucky!
The Silph Research Group proposes the following as the current base probabilities of receiving a Lucky Pokémon in a trade outside of special events:
|Age of Oldest|
The Major Factor: A Pokémons Age
Because Niantic hinted that a Pokémons age would impact its likelihood of becoming Lucky when traded, this was the Silph Research Groups primary research focus.
- Less than One Year Old
- More than One Year Old
- More than Two Years Old
- Pokémon caught between July and August 2016

Normal: Giving And Receiving Gifts
The giving of gifts to your buddies is the easiest way to boost your friendship level. You can use it once a day to send gifts to all of your friends and it will increase your friend score each day. As stated above this will take you 30 days to get to the Ultra friend level and you will need to spin Poké Stops to collect gifts you can only hold 10 gifts at a time so if you have lots of friends youll need to spin a lot of stops but it is the tried and tested method.
It is also the only way to be Ultra friends with your Poké Pals from across the world. I have plenty of friends back in the UK and sending gifts is the only way to increase our friend rating. Just by being diligent with giving and receiving gifts you will eventually reach the Ultra level and you and your friends will be able to battle remotely.
What Are Lucky Pokemon In Pokemon Go
So what are lucky Pokemon? They’re similar but different to shiny Pokemon while shiny Pokemon look different, lucky Pokemon are identified by gold circles around the Pokemon on the list view. When you click on them, the background is gold and sparkly, compared to the usual type-specific background.
When you have a lucky Pokemon, you get a couple of benefits. The first is that the stardust cost to power it up is reduced by 50%, so if you have a strong PvP Pokemon that becomes lucky, you’re in luck. Pun intended.
The other possible benefit is that a lucky Pokemon’s IV will always be a minimum of 12/12/12. This means that you could trade a 0 IV Pokemon and potentially gain a 100 IV Pokemon in return. On the contrary, you’re risking a lot if you trade a 98 IV Pokemon, because there’s a high chance it will come out with lower stats than it went in with.

Lucky Trades: Revisiting Older Pokmon Rates
Lucky trades have now been a part of Pokemon GO for over two years and are one of the most frequently discussed features on the Road. Since the Research Groups last article on lucky trade rates, researchers have been aging and trading their Pokémon in order to refine our understanding about how age affects lucky trade probabilities. Some of these Pokémon have even reached the four-year milestone!
Today, were going to take a look at the results found from more than 70,000 trades. These findings are timely with Niantics testing of an expanded trade radius for limited-time events over the past few weeks. A few reminders of what we already know about lucky trades might be helpful before we dive into newer discoveries.
Recap of Previous Research
Our previous research showed that friendship level, trade distance, and Gentleman and Pilot medals have no impact on lucky trade rates. In addition, lucky rates are determined by the whole-year age of the Pokémon: i.e., any Pokémon ages 0 days through 364 days will all have the same lucky rate, while all Pokémon ages 366-729 days have a higher rate.¹
Later research on lucky rates determined the mechanics of guaranteed lucky trades: July-August 2016 Pokémon are guaranteed to turn lucky if the sender has been in fewer than 10 trades where at least one party was guaranteed. In this article, weve specifically excluded any trades that meet this criteria.
With these findings in mind, lets take a look at what weve discovered!

Is There Any Way To Increase Your Odds Of Getting A Lucky Pokmon
Maybe. Pokémom Go is being cagey:
The longer the Pokémon spends inside a Trainer’s Pokémon storage, the higher the chance of them becoming Lucky Pokémon when they are traded. Whether or not being in storage causes Pokémon to become Lucky Pokémon remains a mystery, but be sure to stay posted for more results from the professor’s research.
So it sounds like older Pokémon in your collection, if you trade them, will have a better odds of being a Lucky Pokémon.

Great And Ultra League Considerations
If you follow PvP closely, you know that great or perfect IVs are not often what you want. As a matter of fact, when trading for or rerolling Pokemon for trainer battles, getting a Lucky Trade is often a bummer. HOWEVER, there are some Pokemon who you actively want a perfect or near perfect version as they max out below or just above the Great League or Ultra League CP caps at level 40. In addition to ensuring yourself a great IV version to work with, halving the dust cost to take something to/near level 40 is nothing to sneeze at.

How Do Lucky Pokmon Work
Essentially, a lucky Pokémon is easier to power up. Each time you power up a Pokémon, you need to use stardust and candy. A lucky Pokémons stardust requirement is reduced by 50% permanently, making it much easier to make them stronger as you use them. Its a complicated process using a Pokémon with ideal stats and having them become lucky. Whenever you trade a Pokémon to another trainer, their stats change. Theres a chance a perfectly suitable PvP Pokémon becomes nothing more than Pokédex filler in the event of a trade, even if they become lucky.
Theres a lot of random chance that goes into using lucky Pokémon. You dont want to hedge all of your Pokémon Go Battle League Pokémon into becoming lucky, but if happens and the Pokémon has great stats, it makes your life a lot easier.

How To Trade In Pokmon Go And Trading Requirements
Before you can start trading, you need to fulfill the following requirements:
- Be Pokémon Go Friends with the person you are trading with
- Have a Trainer Level of 10 or above
- Be within close physical proximity
From there, go to your Friends feed, and select the Friend you want to Trade with. The option to Trade will be next to ‘Send Gift’, below the XP bar.
Provided you are within 100m, you can then select a Pokémon to trade, check the Pokémon you’ll receive and the Stardust cost before confirming. Then, you trade, with the process taking just a few seconds.
The following also needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to trading:
- Trades will give each player additional Candy, with more Candy rewarded if the two Pokémon were caught far away from another. According to Reddit, this is 1 Candy for below 30km, 2 Candy for 30-100km, 3 Candy for above 100km.
- The HP and CP of each Pokémon will vary once the Trade is completed – it could be higher or lower. The better the Friendship Level, the less variation will be. You’ll be able to see this before the trade, and there will be safeguards in place to stop powerful Pokémon going to players with a much lower Trainer level.
