On the 4th of February, Niantic announced the Lunar New Year event. In a Pokémon GO first, this event boosted the rate at which Lucky Pokémon could be received. This has heightened interest in Lucky rates in general, but the question remains what are the regular, unboosted rates in the first place?

Fortunately, the Silph Research Group has completed over 9,000 trades since changes to the Lucky Trade system were announced. We can now confidently reveal that each year a Pokémon ages, it increases its chances of becoming Lucky!

The other possible benefit is that a lucky Pokemon’s IV will always be a minimum of 12/12/12. This means that you could trade a 0 IV Pokemon and potentially gain a 100 IV Pokemon in return. Lucky Friends is a special friendship status that guarantees you a Lucky Pokémon.

Becoming Lucky Friends in Pokémon Go works as follows:

• There is a chance of being Lucky Friends when you are Best Friends with someone.

• The Lucky Friends status seems to last for as long as you next trade – so feel free to continue sending and receiving Gifts or engaging in Trainer Battles until you next meet up and can trade. It does not expire that day.

Lucky Trades: Revisiting Older Pokmon Rates

Lucky trades have now been a part of Pokemon GO for over two years and are one of the most frequently discussed features on the Road. Since the Research Groups last article on lucky trade rates, researchers have been aging and trading their Pokémon in order to refine our understanding about how age affects lucky trade probabilities. Some of these Pokémon have even reached the four-year milestone!

Today, were going to take a look at the results found from more than 70,000 trades. These findings are timely with Niantics testing of an expanded trade radius for limited-time events over the past few weeks. A few reminders of what we already know about lucky trades might be helpful before we dive into newer discoveries.

Recap of Previous Research

Our previous research showed that friendship level, trade distance, and Gentleman and Pilot medals have no impact on lucky trade rates. In addition, lucky rates are determined by the whole-year age of the Pokémon: i.e., any Pokémon ages 0 days through 364 days will all have the same lucky rate, while all Pokémon ages 366-729 days have a higher rate.¹

Later research on lucky rates determined the mechanics of guaranteed lucky trades: July-August 2016 Pokémon are guaranteed to turn lucky if the sender has been in fewer than 10 trades where at least one party was guaranteed. In this article, weve specifically excluded any trades that meet this criteria.

With these findings in mind, lets take a look at what weve discovered!

If you follow PvP closely, you know that great or perfect IVs are not often what you want. As a matter of fact, when trading for or rerolling Pokemon for trainer battles, getting a Lucky Trade is often a bummer. HOWEVER, there are some Pokemon who you actively want a perfect or near perfect version as they max out below or just above the Great League or Ultra League CP caps at level 40. In addition to ensuring yourself a great IV version to work with, halving the dust cost to take something to/near level 40 is nothing to sneeze at.

Once you reach Lucky friend status with another player, youll be able to trade Pokemon for less Stardust and your first trade as Lucky friends will upgrade the Pokemon youre receiving to a Lucky Pokemon. How To Trade In Pokmon Go And Trading Requirements

Before you can start trading, you need to fulfill the following requirements:

• Be Pokémon Go Friends with the person you are trading with
• Have a Trainer Level of 10 or above
• Be within close physical proximity

From there, go to your Friends feed, and select the Friend you want to Trade with. The option to Trade will be next to ‘Send Gift’, below the XP bar.

Provided you are within 100m, you can then select a Pokémon to trade, check the Pokémon you’ll receive and the Stardust cost before confirming. Then, you trade, with the process taking just a few seconds.

The following also needs to be taken into consideration when it comes to trading:

• Trades will give each player additional Candy, with more Candy rewarded if the two Pokémon were caught far away from another. According to Reddit, this is 1 Candy for below 30km, 2 Candy for 30-100km, 3 Candy for above 100km.
• The HP and CP of each Pokémon will vary once the Trade is completed – it could be higher or lower. The better the Friendship Level, the less variation will be. You’ll be able to see this before the trade, and there will be safeguards in place to stop powerful Pokémon going to players with a much lower Trainer level.
