One way to get the Excellent Throw is to practice, practice, and practice. However it sounds, practice is the key to get an Excellent Throw.

That said, there are some tricks you can use to get an excellent throw in the game. Let’s start with the basics.

The ring size gets smaller when holding on to the Pokéball until released. Once the Pokéball releases, the ring size will freeze, and we want to make sure that the ring is frozen at the smallest size.

Moving on, we need to know what Pokémon we are going up against. We all know our goal “Gotta Catch’em All, but we can start with the Pokémon that have a larger ring and move towards the smaller ring Pokémons.

Here are some good Pokémon options to choose from:

• Slowpoke
• Ponyta
• Snorlax
• Legendary Pokémons

Next is to use berries, more specifically, Nanab berries because they will slow down the ring size getting smaller, and you will have enough time to plan out your next Pokéball throw.

Use the red Pokéballs to keep on farming the Excellent Throws. The red Pokéballs would not be much help in catching the Pokémons. But they will give you the chance to keep getting Excellent Throws.

A curveball is pretty much exactly what you’d imagine in Pokemon Go: it involves putting spin on a Pokeball as you throw it in order to make for something of a trick-shot. A curveball actually also carries a 10 XP bonus when it successfully lands and catches a Pokemon – and when combined with landing Nice, Great and Excellent Throws it’ll raise your chances further still of catching more difficult critters. A successfully landed curveball gives you a 1.7x bonus to your potential catch percentage – because of course, under the hood, Pokemon Go is all about the numbers.

In order to toss a curveball in Pokemon Go, hold the ball still in front of you with your finger on it and spin it in place, rotating around while maintaining contact with your device screen. When you then throw, the ball will curve based on the spin you put on it – it’ll curve left for clockwise spin and right for anti-clockwise spin. Throw in the opposite direction of the spin in order to send the ball to the middle of the screen.

Once you’ve found a Pokémon on the map, tap them to start the capture process. Whether in augmented mode or in-game, time your throws to when the coloured circle round them is at their smallest. If you manage to land the ball in the circle, the greater the chance of success in capturing the Pokémon.

To do this, press and hold on the Pokéball to make the circle appear, and then throw it when you’re ready with a swipe. Remember, the closer you get to the centre, the better the throw type – it goes from Nice for most of the circle, Great for around half, and Excellent when it’s close to the middle.

Of course, the risk rewards is the smaller the circle, the easier it is to miss and / or more of a chance the circle will loop back around, so be sure to practice the timing to get it just right. It’s worth it, though, as the XP gains are pretty substantial:

Catch Bonuses In A Nutshell

When you try to catch a Pokémon, the goal is to toss your ball inside the shrinking ring around them. But there are special catch bonuses that can help improve your chances of keeping that Pokémon locked inside that Poké Ball rather than breaking free.

There are four catch bonuses: Nice, Great, Excellent, and Curve.

Nice is when the ball lands at the moment the radar circle is at its widest, and gives you 10XP.

Great is when the ball lands in the middle of the radar circle when it’s half-size, and gives you 50XP.

Excellent is when the ball lands in the smallest radar circle and gives you 100XP.

Curve is when your ball curves, and gives you 10XP and a better chance of catching the Pokémon.

Whatever bonus you’re going for, remember to tap and hold on the Poké Ball to start the ring cycle so that you can wait to toss your ball until the ring is at the correct point.

Prioritize your Pokémon: While its of course possible to get an excellent throw an any Pokémon, some of them are just not worth the effort. Like most things, an Excellent throw can only be achieved by practice and the best way to do that is to go for the closer, bigger Pokémon first. The best practice targets for the excellent throw in Pokémon are Pidgey, Rattata, and Snorlax. Rattata and Pidgey are close enough to make the ring seem less intimidating and Snorlax is large enough to make practice easy.

How To Throw A Curve Ball

Curve Balls are performed by first spinning the Poké Ball and then throwing it to make it curve before it hits the Pokémon.

To pull these off, youll first want to spin the Poké Ball and then swipe to throw it. Make sure you throw against the curve , or the Poké Ball wont even hit the Pokémon.

Youll also want to alter your throw direction depending on how far the Pokémon is away from you. If theyre close, youll want to throw it wide so it curves in quicker. If theyre far away, youll want a shorter curve so dont throw it to wide focus on getting distance instead.

If youre struggling to follow all of this, basically, the highest chance you have of catching the Pokémon is to throw a Curve Ball into the smallest circle possible.

Use Curveballs To Get A Bonus When Catching Pokemon

As well as the above timing and position-based captures, you can also throw Curveballs at Pokémon, which not only increases your chances of capture, but also gives you a little extra XP for your trouble, as you can see in the above list.

To throw a Curveball, start by holding the Pokéball and rotating it round. When you throw, it’ll then curve in the rotation you spun the ball if it’s clockwise, then it’ll go to the right, and if anti-clockwise, to the left. As such, if you throw it in the opposite direction, it’ll curve towards the centre.
