How To Prevent Pokemon Evolution

Most of the time, while playing Pokemon Sword and Shield, if your character is evolving you want it to happen. Whether its via reaching a new level, or using a stone, you probably want that Pokemon to go through the process. But what if you dont? What if you need that Pokemon to stay the way they are? You can hit B during the evolution process, of course, but that can get tedious as you pile up XP. Theres a better way. A special stone used to prevent evolution without any additional input. But where is it? Heres where to get Everstone in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

What The Everstone Is Used For

The Everstone stops whatever Pokemon is holding it when youre battling or in the overworld from evolving. For example, if your Grookey is holding an Everstone but is at level 16, when it should evolve to Thwackey, itll remain a Grookey.

Remove the Everstone from your Grookey and the next time it levels up, itll evolve into Thwackey.

The other, more important use of the Everstone in Pokemon Sword and Shield is in relation to breeding. Natures can be incredibly important in competitive battling.

If you give an Everstone to a Pokemon youre breeding from, the Egg Pokemon will be guaranteed to have the same nature as the one holding it.

This can also be used in conjunction with Mints, which allow you to change the nature of your Pokemon. You can either use Mints on your parent Pokemon holding the Everstone, or just change the Egg Pokemons Nature with Mints if youre learning about this too late.

Game Freaks has blessed Pokemon Sword and Shield with a new DLC known as Crown Tundra. The game has gone through a lot of alterations and inclusions after the arrival of Crown Tundra. More importantly, several unnoticed aspects of the Galar world have been either altered or replaced in this newly arrived DLC.

One of those aspects is the inevitable process of Pokemon Evolution. Although the evolution of Pokemon is a fantastic process and almost every Pokemaster happily does that. However, there are many Pokemon available in the game that gamers dont want to evolve. Still, as soon as their level in the game gets upgraded, the Pokemon automatically evolve. Following this, the game has now received Everstone to avoid the evolution process of their ideal Pokemon. Thus, we have provided a proper workaround to find Everstone in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

The Everstone is essential when it comes to the completion of the Crown Tundra. Rather than one item, this is actually a cluster of six similarly-named items that all have similar effects both in battle and in breeding. In Battle, each ‘Power Item’ raises the EVs by 8 when they grow so long as the item is held – but the Speed stat is lowered in battle as a result. The official description it as follows:

“An item to be held by a Pokémon. It reduces Speed but allows the holder’s stat to grow more after battling.”

Here’s what stat each item helps to grow, per each item:

Where To Get An Everstone

The Everstone is something that you may have a number of from the main game or The Isle of Armor expansion, but theres also a good chance you just missed out on them or even sold them. This is not good, considering you absolutely need one of them to complete The Legendary Giants quest and specifically to get access to Regirock.

Thankfully, The Crown Tundra has an Everstone that you can grab that isnt too overly far away from where you need it at. What you need to do is head to the most eastern area of Giants Bed that will eventually lead to you Giants Foot. From here, follow the water in the middle of the area and take it into a cave known as the Roaring-Sea Cave.

This can be rather confusing, but what you want to start doing is check for every sparkling item in the cave. The specific one that youre going to want is right before the exit/entrance to Frigid Sea, which you can see in the image above. If you walk through that path and havent found it, turn around and head down the tunnel youre in and it should be directly on the right when you enter the bigger room here.

Everstone Location In Pokemon Sword & Shield

Here what the Everstone does when it’s held by a Pokemon:

  • In Battle:“An item to be held by a Pokémon. A Pokémon holding this peculiar stone is prevented from evolving.”
  • When Breeding: When one of the two parents is holding an Everstone, the Pokemon from the resulting egg will inherit the Nature of the Pokemon that was holding the egg.

We’ve got a separate guide with all of the Everstone Locations in Sword & Shield, including the DLC, but here’s a starter one: To get an Everstone of your very own, head to Turffield. This item is available from early in the game, as soon as you first visit Turffield as part of your gym challenge. Look for a hidden item to the right-hand side of the town on a dead end against some rocks. It’ll be glistening, as hidden items do in this game.

Remember that you can use this item in tandem with Mints – so you can use Mints to change the nature of a parent Pokemon, then inhert that nature… or you can simply breed and then use mints to change the child Pokemon’s nature.

    What Is An Everstone

The Everstone is an item in the Pokemon series that prevents a Pokemon from evolving. As long as a Pokemon holds the item they will not evolve, even upon reaching the appropriate level.

However, the Everstone also has other uses such as transferring a suitable nature to offspring. For those more into competitive play, natures play a big part in increasing the stats of a Pokemon, which influence its outgoing damage. Initially, there was only a 50% chance of a Pokemon inheriting its parents nature. However, after the release of Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2, a Pokemon holding an Everstone has a 100% chance of passing its nature onto its offspring.

Another effect of the stone is that it allows the player to choose what form a Pokemon will take. For example, if a regular Raichu holding an Everstone mates with an Alolan Raichu, the Pokemon that hatches from the resulting egg would be normal form as well. However, this does not stop it from changing into the Alolan form when hatched in Alola.

How To Stop Pokemon From Evolving

Make sure youre comfortable with the regular method for halting evolution so that you dont mistakenly push your favourite Pokemon into an unwanted evolution before you get the Everstone. When you reach that blue-hued screen where the game will tell you that your Pokemon is evolving, hammer the B button on the right Joy-Con to cancel the process and keep them in their current state.

Destiny Knot Location In Pokemon Sword & Shield

Here’s the effect of the Destiny Knot when this key item is held by a Pokemon:

    • In Battle:“An item to be held by a Pokémon. If the holder becomes infatuated, the opposing Pokémon will be, too.” – When the Pokemon is hit with the Charm status effect, the opposing Pokemon will also.
    • When Breeding: When the Pokemon holding the Destiny Knot breeds, the resulting egg will inherit five IVs from both of its parents.

In order to get your hands on the Destiny Knot, find it at the Pokemon Center in Hammerlocke, for sale from an NPC. It costs 10BP – but BP is the currency you earn in the Battle Tower, so you’ll need to become Champion, hit the post game and go to the Battle Tower before you can get this useful breeding item.
