Pokemon Go Cliff Guide: The Best Counters For Defeating The Team Go Rocket Leader
These tips will give you a leg up on this powerhouse Pokemon trainer.
In Pokemon Go, not only will you have to face off against powerful mythical Pokemon in challenging raids and plenty of other trainers in a Battle League, but you’ll eventually also face off against the game’s version of longtime Pokemon baddies, Team Rocket. Team Go Rocket grunts can be found throughout the game, but it’s their four leaders that will prove to be the most troublesome. In this guide, we’ll tell you how to defeat Cliff, the soft-spoken ruffian representing Team Mystic’s dark side.
Cliff will always use Shadow Seedot in the starting position. This will not change no matter how many times you face him. Phases 2 and 3 of the battle, however, will be a different experience every time. Each phase sees Cliff choose one of three randomized Shadow Pokemon, as listed below
- Phase 1
- Shadow Seedot
Best Cliff Counters
Make sure to have Flying-type moves in your arsenal, as Seedot and two-out-of-three Phase 2 Pokemon have a weakness to high flyers. Similarly, Grass-type moves will deal big damage to 5 of the possible 7 Pokemon you’ll see. To start, we’d bring two of the three listed below:
Rewards for defeating Cliff
After Cliff is defeated, you will receive 1000 Stardust and two out of the six items listed below:
Giovanni Has Disappeared In The Season Of Mischief
Unfortunately, Niantic says in the Pokémon GO Season of Mischief announcement that Giovanni has disappeared, so you won’t be able to battle him at the moment. But we fully expect him to be back later in the season – he loves a bit of mischief, after all. Perhaps he’ll bring Shadow Lugia with him this time around?
Whatever happens, it pays to be ready. So get powering up

Injury Report For The New York Knicks
The same players who missed their season opener are listed as injured in this games injury report. Taj Gibson is unable to play due to his commitments to his family as a new father. Nerlens Noel, on the other hand, is currently suffering from left knee pain and has been ruled out.
Luka Samanic, who was dismissed by the Spurs and is now on a two-way contract with the Knicks, will be assigned to the G-League to continue his development.

How To Find Him
To find the Team GO Rocket Leaders, you need a Rocket Radar. Before that, you have to defeat six Team GO Rocket Grunts and get one Mysterious Component from each. You will then combine the six Mysterious Components to create a Rocket Radar.
Equip the Rocket Radar to find Team GO Rocket Hideouts on your map. There are three Leaders, so you have a one-in-three chance to find Cliff on the first Hideout you check.
After you have created a Rocket Radar once, you will be able to buy it from the PokéShop in-game for 200 PokéCoins each. Dont worry. You wont lose your Rocket Radar even if you lose to a Team GO Rocket Leader.

Jesse James And Meowth Have Blasted Off Again
Jesse and James are no longer available to challenge, but they are sure to return at some point in the future. Their previous line ups weren’t particularly difficult to beat, especially since neither used their shields.
Previously, Jesse’s lineup included:
- Scyther: a Bug and Flying type, Scyther has several weaknesses, including Fire, Flying, Electric, and Ice, but it’s quad weakness to Rock is the one you’ll want to exploit. Aggron, Rampardos, Rhyperior, Golem, Terrakion, or Tyranitar all work really well here.
- Ekans: a Poison type, Ekans is weak against Ground and Psychic types. However, Ekans is pretty weak. Mewtwo, Alakazm, or Gardevoir could all work well here. Alternatively, you could put in Metagross or whatever Pokémon you plan to use against Stantler, in order to build up their charged attack.
- Stantler: as a Normal type, Stantler’s only weakness is Fighting types. However, because of its potential moveset, Steel and Rock types are your best bet here. Metagross, Regirock, Jirachi, or Cobalion are all great choices here.
After beating Jesse, James’ lineup included:
Upon beating Jesse, you could catch a Shadow Scyther with the potential to be Shiny, and upon beating James, you could catch a Shadow Pinsir with the potential to be Shiny.
Note: Jesse and James fulfill the requirements for beating two Team GO Rocket Grunts in Research tasks.

Best Cliff Counters For Pokemon Go In July 2021
One of the things that makes Cliff tricky is the fact that there are six potential Pokemon he could throw at you. The battle will last for three rounds, and the only one you can guarantee is the first one hell always start off with Seedot, but the other two rounds have multiple options each.
You need to prepared for each of the Pokemon that Cliff could send out in the second or third round of your battle, making sure youve got a decent counter in your back pocket for each of them. At a glance, then, this is what you need to know.
- Shadow Torterra
- Shadow Sharpedo
To take this battle on, we advise loading your team up with a Charizard, a Mewtwo and a Blastoise or an equivalent trio of Fire, Psychic and Water-type Pokemon just make sure they are all powered up as much as they can be. Having these three means you should be ready to take on most versions of Cliffs line-up and should see you emerge victorious with all those sweet rewards.
Charizard will take out Seedot without any issue, and Mewtwo can be used against several Pokemon that Cliff may bring to the fight. Having Blastoise in the mix gives you a good chance of winning if you end up being pitted against Tyrantitar in the final round.
Tips For Defeating Cliff
Unlike standard Team GO Rocket Grunts, Leaders can use Shields. Leaders will use up one of their shields every time you use a Charge Move, so its good to have a Pokemon with a Charge Move that has a low energy requirement such as Machamp with Cross Chop so you can burn through their shields quickly and hit their later Pokemon hard with a stronger Charge Move with a higher energy requirement.
According to a set of tips from user Paraprosdokian7 and LanAkou, the Pokemon used by Team GO Rocket Leaders have souped up attack stats. That means that its not only important to use Pokemon that can deal super effective damage but ones that can resist their attacks. You can bait the leaders into using up all their shields quickly if you use fast charging Charge Moves constantly in the beginning. That way your more powerful Charge Moves can hit the opponent without a hitch. If you can kill a Pokemon easily with Fast Moves, save up your Charge Moves for the next Pokemon they send out especially if that Pokemon isnt weak to your Fast Moves. Rewards include 1,000 Stardust and two of the following rewards: one Unova Stone, one Sinnoh Stone, one Max Revive, three Revives, one Max Potion or three Max Potions according to The Silph Road Subreddit. Youll also get to capture one of the Shadow Pokemon used by the leader with a chance of them being shiny, according to Pokemon GO Hub.

Best Kingler & Sharpedo Counters
Kingler is a Water-type Pokémon and the final of the three Pokémon that Cliff may select as his second choice for the battle. Its best attacks are Metal Claw and Crabhammer, so be wary of this giant crabs mighty arm.
Similarly, Sharpedo is a dual Water- and Dark-type and one of the three possibilities that youll have to face as Cliffs final Pokémon. Its best moves are Bite and Hydro Pump.
Conveniently, both Kingler and Sharpedo can be countered by strong Electric and Grass-type Pokémon. In this case, we recommend bringing the likes of Venasaur, Sceptile, Zapdos or Magnezone to blow Cliffs Pokémon straight out of the water.
