Simply put, Shiny Pokémon are color variants. There is only one Shiny color variant per Pokémon. Some variants are obvious like Shiny Gyarados is red instead of blue. Others are more subtle, like Shiny Bulbasaur or Squirtle, which are the same color but slightly different shades. In the core games, every single Pokémon has a shiny variant, but in Pokémon Go, Shiny Pokémon are unlocked during Community Day, other events, or with updates.

If a Shiny isn’t unlocked, it doesn’t matter how many of that Pokémon you catch, you’ll never find a Shiny Pokémon. On the other hand, once unlocked Shiny Pokémon are far more common in Pokémon Go than they are in the core games, especially during events. Still, they’re pretty rare, so your best bet to finding Shiny Pokémon is to tap on every single Pokémon to spawn. Shiny checking takes time, but once you know which species can be Shiny, it is a lot easier.

Note: One other important thing to consider when Shiny Hunting, generally you cannot catch an evolved Shiny Pokémon. For example, if you tap on an Ivysaur on the map, it cannot be Shiny, even though Shiny Bulbasaur can be caught. There are rare events where this is not the case, and Mega Raids generally have the chance of being Shiny.

Any Pokemon In The Let’s Go Games

Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee were a blessing for shiny hunters, as they came with a fantastic method for increasing shiny odds: the catch combo. Catch enough of any one Pokemon in a row, and that species’ shiny odds will be lowered to just one in a few hundred. On top of this, shinies appear as shiny in the overworld, so they’re much quicker to spot.

This is also a good time to mention the shiny charm. Catch all the Pokemon in these game’s National Dex and you’ll earn a charm that permanently improves your shiny odds.

Pikachu decked out in a special hat is typically tied to some kind of limited time event in Pokémon GO, making any both the regular and Shiny hat-wearing Pikachus rare. In particular, the Shiny Ash Hat Pikachu and Shiny World Cap Pikachu are some of the rarest. Ash Hat Pikachus only showed up through photobombing the AR mode on April Fools Day in 2019. Initially, World Cap Pikachu for only one hour during Octobers Spotlight Hour in 2020! While Ash Hat Pikachu never returned, World Cap Pikachu did come back for the Animation Week 2020 event. So, if youre serious about catching all the Shinies that Pokémon GO has to offer, be on the lookout for any special events where costumed Pikachus will be available because youll only have a short window to catch a Shiny.

Ditto In Pokemon Red Or Blue

This one is a little confusing, but it nets you a guaranteed shiny. In Generation 1, there were no shiny Pokemon. In Generation 2, however, a Pokemon’s shininess was determined by its IVs, so it’s possible for a Gen 1 Pokemon to become shiny upon transfer to a Gen 2 game.

In Red or Blue, get a Pokemon you know to have shiny IVs and make its only move Mimic. When you battle a wild Ditto, it will ultimately use Transform twice, and because of Gen 1’s notorious bugs, the Ditto will then permanently copy your Pokemon’s IVs, making it shiny once it’s been caught and transferred to Gen 2. And yes, this trick works in the Virtual Console versions of all these games.

Encounter Streak Catch The Same Pokmon 25+ Times

If you played the Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! games, you might be aware of something called catch combos. This means that you fight the same Pokémon, say Nicket, repeatedly without fighting any others. Each time you catch the same Pokémon, the chances of finding a shiny increase. After you’ve caught the Pokémon 25 times in a row, your chances of catching a shiny go up from 1/4096 to 1/2048. However, the percentage can’t go up anymore after 25 chain encounters. Whenever you have a high encounter streak for the same Pokémon, that creature is more likely to pop up, which also helps.

So basically, aim to catch the same Pokémon 25+ times in a row to seriously increase your chances of happening upon a shiny. This process can take hours to pay off, but it’s fun flaunting that Pokémon once you’ve caught it. If you accidentally run into another Pokémon other than the one you’re focusing on, run away. Keep in mind that accidentally catching or defeating another Pokémon will break your combo, and then you’ll have to start your combo streak over.

A Pokémon fleeing from you in battle could break the streak. However, we haven’t been able to verify this for sure.

Are Shiny Pokmon Shiny For Everyone In Pokmon Go

No. With Ditto, once a Pokémon is determined to be Ditto, the servers make it Ditto for everyone. With Shiny Pokémon, it’s done on a player-by-player basis.

That means you and a friend can both catch the same Magikarp, yours could turn out to be Shiny, and theirs not.

There has been one exception so far: For the July 2018 Community Day, Pokémon Go had Sunglasses Squirtle available through Field Research and, tasks that had a Shiny Sunglasses Squritle were Shiny for everyone!

Cheating For Shiny Pokmon

I feel its very important to talk about this, because its all too common for people to want a Shiny Pokémon so badly that they will skip directly to the end result by cheating to obtain the Shiny Pokémon. Yes, that is a thing, there are ways to do so, but I do not recommend doing this!

Although it may sound fun having an entire team of maxed out Shiny Pokémon, or perhaps an entire collection of Shiny Pokémon in your PC to use as you see fit, what do you actually gain from that? What satisfaction would you feel from it? You might think its cool for a little bit, but since you didnt earn it, it will have no meaning. Youll know those Shiny Pokémon werent legitimately obtained.

Think of it like cheating on a test if you just get the answers from a classmate, youre not doing the work yourself, and even though you may pass, you wont be any smarter for it.

Part of what makes Shiny Hunting fun is the rewarding feeling of running into a legitimate Shiny Pokémon! You set a goal for yourself, you put in time to achieve that goal, and eventually, through your own persistence, you accomplish that goal. Youll actually feel accomplishment from it.
