Brilliant Stars is the first Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion to release in 2022 and is packed with rare collectibles. Since it launched in February, the expansion has been a massive hit with Pokémon fans due to its collection of cards featuring popular Pokémon such as Arceus, Shaymin, and Umbreon. Despite being a recent Sword & Shield set, there is already a handful of valuable Brilliant Stars Pokémon cards including the rare Charizard Rainbow VSTAR that has been selling for hundreds of dollars online.
The Brilliant Stars TCG expansion also features the debut of the incredibly powerful VSTAR variant. The new mechanic has made waves in the TCG competitive scene, with the Arceus VSTAR card dominating in several official TCG tournaments in 2022. The Sinnoh Legendary has an enormous 280 HP, and its move “Trinity Nova” can dish out 200 damage to opponents. Even for the collectors, the stunning Gold version of the Arceus VSTAR has made it one of the most sought-after cards in the TCG.

Hello everyone! My name is Elena from Gaia Storm TCG, and I am beyond excited to share my first article here at TCG Park with you. I have been playing Pokémon Trading Card Game for almost a decade now , and I always had the objective of helping the community grow bigger over time. Thats why I decided that my first post here would be an analysis of the upcoming set, Brilliant Stars, an expansion that comes with plenty of very powerful cards that will change the way the game is played from the very beginning first day.
One thing you should know about Brilliant Stars is that it opens up a whole new arc for the Trading Card Game. You are probably familiar with the fact that Pokémon sets follow certain themes or eras. For example, from the past couple of years, we had sets that focused on introducing Sword and Shield Pokémon & characters to the TGC, and now this is coming to an end. While we say goodbye to Galar, the Sinnoh region is making a comeback, which Arceus is shining above everything.
Even if this new set is not as large as the previous ones weve had, it still has a remarkable amount of cards. I am just going to be covering some of the most important ones from a high-level perspective so you can get an idea of the overall potential of Brilliant Stars. Lets get to it!
/10 Arceus Vstar $5851
Arceus VSTAR is back, with the Gold Secret Rare worth almost $20 more than the basic version. It’s a shame to see two of the four VSTAR Pokemon in the expansion not get a look-in to this list, but when you compare a Shaymin or a Whimsicott to Arceus and Charizard, it was never going to be any other way.

/10 Arceus Vstar $3615
VSTAR is the new mechanic of Brilliant Stars, offered as an alternative evolution path for your V Pokemon. VSTAR Pokemon have powerful ‘VSTAR Powers’, which you can only use one of in an entire game. Each of the VSTAR Pokemon in the expansion has a rainbow rare version available, but oddly it isn’t the version of this card that’s the most valuable.

/10 Charizard V $3988
Charizard is one of the most commonly-printed Pokemon in the TCG, and it’s purely because any expansion it’s in sells like gangbusters. Since Sword & Shield’s base set it’s appeared in 16 different printings, and appears three times on this list alone. This version is definitely the least interesting of the three, as it just shows Charizard on a bland background with a white outline.
/10 Umbreon Vmax $4813
Umbreon VMAX is one of the only cards on this list to be part of the Trainer Collection, a sub-series of cards in Brilliant Stars to showcase Pokemon alongside trainers famously associated with them. This is the same card that was introduced in Evolving Skies, but this time shows Umbreon with the Johto Elite Four member Karen in a nighttime city scape. It looks fantastic, although it isn’t anywhere near as valuable as the Evolving Skies Alternate Secret Rare, which still sits at a whopping $238.43.

Brilliant Stars Set List

Pokemon Brilliant Stars is the 9th expansion set in the Sword & Shield Series. The set contains 216 cards: 172 in the base set, 14 secret rare cards, and 30 Trainer Gallery cards. Brilliant Stars is the first set to introduce the VSTAR mechanic to the game giving Pokemon special VSTAR powers.
The Trainer Gallery is a subset of the Brilliant Stars set. It contains 30 cards that are numbered starting with TG, for example, TG01/TG30, TG02/TG30, etc. There are no secret rare cards in the Trainer Gallery subset. Each full art card in this subset contains a Pokemon with their Trainer, similar to cards in the Cosmic Eclipse expansion set.

With people opening their packs, booster boxes, and Elite Trainer Boxes, it’s time to take a look at which cards are the most valuable. These prices have been taken from the TCGPlayer’s market prices as of Tuesday, March 1, 2022 about four days after the expansion launched. Prices can sometimes fluctuate in the weeks after launch, but we have a rough idea of which cards will be the big ones by now. No prizes for guessing Charizard will still be super valuable in a month, though.

Since Brilliant Stars combines regular Japanese expansions and collectors ones, this set comes with much more high-rarity cards than common expansions do. For instance, there are a lot of chances to get a character card, which are cards from previous sets featuring a Pokémon with its trainer , and this applies to popular V and VMAX cards like the Eeveelution or Calyrex VMAX plus many others. And not only that, but we are also getting some very stunning back & gold artworks for Rapid Strike and Single Strike Urshifu VMAX!

Of course, any expansion with Charizard in is going to have it as its most valuable card. Charizard is so highly sought-after that it pumps up the value of not just itself but of the entire expansion as people try and find those rainbow secret rares. Brilliant Stars is full of awesome art, but easily one of the best is Charizard V’s alternate full art. A dramatic fight between a Charizard and a Venusaur, with a cinematic angle and slightly-muted colouring, this is potentially one of the most visually impressive Charizards to have ever been launched. It’s the same card as the standard full-art, but the new art helps pump up the value by $125.

/10 Arceus Vstar $3695
Instead, it’s the bog-standard Arceus VSTAR that is evaluated slightly higher. It’s only eighty cents mind, so as the market settles in the coming weeks that could change. Arceus is one of those Pokemon that tends to always do well when printed, and as Brilliant Stars is effectively the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl-themed expansion, it makes sense for it to show up here.
