The most recent card to make headlines for pure value, this card sold for nearly a quarter of a million dollars at auction on April 26th 2021. You can find the full details at our story here, but this card depicts Pokémon Company founder and current president Tsunekazu Ishihara, and was given to the company staff as a celebration of the man’s 60th birthday in 2017.
That makes the card rare, but this specific version is even rarer, as Ishihara actually signed this near-mint card to boost its price even further. The “2017 P.M. SM Black Star #TPCi01 Tsunekazu Ishihara Signed Pokémon GX Promo Card”, to use its full title, is a testament to the raw power apparently held by the Pokémon president. The ability “Red Chanchanko” is in reference to the red vest traditionally worn on 60th birthdays in Japan, and prevents the effect of any attack, ability or trainer card against Ishihara. Meanwhile, its GX move “60 Congratulations”, tells you to flip 60 coins, and take a present for each one. A truly legendary card.

But to understand the Pokemon phenomenon, you have to look at the mind behind it. Satoshi Tajiri, the designer of the game, started working as a publisher for game freak, a fanzine about video games he created himself. The original edition of the fanzine was written by hand and distributed independently.
Later on, the young Satoshi started working with a man by the name of Ken Sugimori who began working as an illustrator for the fanzine. After many discussions with his team, Satoshi realized that video games were lacking in quality. He and his team then decided that the best idea was to released their own games.
Satoshi then started to learn the programming language that was necessary to develop games on the Nintendo Famicom, which was the prominent Nintendo console at the time in Japan. Satoshi and his team pitched their first game to Namco, which was named Quinty, and the game had relative success.
Satoshi then began working with the game boy console and evolved the concept for the Pokemon game. Nintendo was so impressed by the idea that they decided to elaborate on the concept. Satoshi wanted to exploit the connectivity options of the game boy console by allowing players to interact and collaborate with each other instead of just competing.

Pokémon was introduced to Japan in 1996, and has since become a household name. The game is not just popular among children it is enjoyed by people of all ages.

How To Play The Pokmon Trading Card Game
The basic flow of play in the Pokémon TCG is relatively simple to grasp, but it involves a few steps youll need to learn before your first battle.
How do you start the Pokémon TCG?
At the beginning of a game, players can flip a coin to see who plays first. Then the decks are shuffled, players draw a hand of seven cards and the top six cards are set aside as prize cards you add one of these to your hand each time one you defeat an opponents Pokémon, and claim victory if you pick up all six before your rival.
Both players can place one basic Pokémon card facedown as their active Pokémon, plus up to five more basic Pokémon on their bench. If you don’t have any basic Pokémon cards in your hand after drawing your initial hand of seven cards, reveal your hand to your opponent and draw seven more hands. You can repeat this as many times as you want until you have at least one basic Pokémon – but your opponent gets to draw one extra card for every time you do.
How do turns work in the Pokémon TCG?
When each turn begins, the active player draws a card from the top of their deck if you run out of cards in your deck and can’t draw on your next turn, you lose.

After youve done the above, your active Pokémon can attack the opponent. The Pokémon can perform one attack listed on its card as long as the correct amount and type of energy is attached to the card.
Back To Kanto And Onward To The Battle Frontier
On January 29, 2004, two new games were released in Japan: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. They arrived in North America on September 9, 2004, and were remakes of Pokémon Red and Green which brought the games up to Generation III standards, as well as adding wireless connectivity and a new region the Sevii Islands. These games also gave the event PokémonDeoxystwo additional forms, which could only be obtained by moving Deoxys to a FireRed or LeafGreen cartridge.
Not yet finished with the Hoenn story, Game Freak developed a third version to complement Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon Emerald. This game was released in Japan on September 16, 2004, and in North America on May 1, 2005. Emerald featured the same wireless connectivity as FireRed and LeafGreen, as well as an updated version of Hoenn with many new features, including the Hoenn Battle Frontier, the ability to re-battle Gym Leaders, an altered plot, and animations for all Pokémon, as in Crystal.

At the time of the release of Pokémon Red & Blue on the Game Boy, the other big Nintendo console was the N64. This led fans to believe that we would get a full console Pokémon RPG at some point. While that has yet to happen, the N64 did see several 3D Pokémon games, with the Pokémon Stadium series.
The game we know as Pokémon Stadium is actually the second one in the series. The original Pokémon Stadium game only featured 42 different playable Pokémon. Nintendo decided to skip this game, and released Pokémon Stadium 2 as the first game in the series in the West, as it featured all 151 original Pokémon.
Pokémon Stadium underwent a bizarre, but necessary piece of censorship when being brought overseas. In the original Japanese version of the game, when Nidoqueen was sent out into the field, she would grab and jostle her breasts. Her idle animation shows her doing the same thing. How To Win The Pokmon Trading Card Game
Like many other competitive trading card games, the Pokémon TCG can be won in a variety of ways:
- The most common path to victory is to knock out six of your opponents Pokémon and collect prize cards. Every time you defeat a Pokémon controlled by your rival, you claim one of the six prize cards you set aside at the start of the game and add it to your hand. When you pick up your sixth and final card, you win!
- If you defeat an opponents active Pokémon and they have no available Pokémon on their bench to replace it, you can also claim victory.
- If your opponent runs out of cards in their deck, and therefore cant draw a card at the beginning of their turn, you win. This is whats known as decking your opponent.

The first of two rare and valuable Pokémon cards called No. 1 Trainer on this list, this particular card was awarded to winners of the regional Battle Road Spring tournaments held in Japan during early 2002.
The regional tournaments were held as qualifiers for the Pokémon World Championships, with the small number of No. 1 Trainer cards produced for the few winners making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards in existence.
Adding to the card’s rarity is the fact that each No. 1 Trainer card was customised with the name of the tournament winner printed onto the card, making each card one-of-a-kind. According to auction house Heritage Auctions, the personalised aspect of the cards also mean that they rarely appear at auction, making them an even rarer sight in the world of Pokémon cards.
The 2002 No. 1 Trainer card was illustrated by Ken Sugimori, best known as being one of the original artists and designers for Pokémon’s first generation of 151 Pokémon. The text on it reads: “The Pokémon Card Game Official Tournament Battle Road Spring 2002 champion is recognised here, and his honour is praised.” Sugimori’s No. 1 Trainer artwork – featuring fan-favourite Pokémon such as Pikachu, Chansey and Marrill – is exclusive to the card, making it especially unique.

About two weeks ago, 34-year-old Oregon resident Kalvin Foley wanted to buy a rare Pokémon card on eBay. It was a rainbow Vmax card featuring Charizard, one of the most popular Pokémon. He was attempting to win it at the end of an auction, one of the most adrenaline-inducing parts of bidding. The card, which started off at $100, began to steadily increase. It jumped to $250. Then $300. Then $375.
Im just watching it throughout the day, Foley recounted. When the 1-minute countdown began, he entered in his max bid of $425. And as soon as I did that, I think everybody else did, because it went from $375 all the way up to, like $550, he said.
Now, he thought, hed never be able to get the card. Foley said that only a year ago, it might have been worth around $250-$300 roughly half the price.

Product And Quarantine Limitations
Targets, Walmarts, and local game stores across the world have been struggling to receive sufficient product allocation as a result of the current global pandemic. When stay-at-home orders initially went into effect, TPCis printing factories were deemed non-essential businesses, leaving them behind on printing both current and future sets. Even specialty stores such as CoreTCG, located in Pasadena, California, have been affected by the recent shortage.
Product has definitely been harder to get since COVID, CoreTCG store manager Vigen Aleksanyan says. Distributors send products in waves, meaning that you dont usually get near what you order upfront, if at all, of your full order.
Its no secret that TPCi has been printing in waves TPCi directly addressed the situation on social media in early October but since the collecting boom, it has become a problem for even the most modern sets. Vivid Voltage initially dropped in August, with booster box prices ranging between $100 and $120 USD, but has now spiked to almost $300 USD on platforms like Ebay due to extremely high demand. This leaves the community at odds as it decries resellers listing products at higher prices for a quick buck and local game stores charging over MSRP.

The New Decks Make This No Fun
I really enjoy playing the Pokémon TCG. Its a game with a lot of thoughtful strategy and is balanced in such a way that for the most part, smart play can help you come back from being behind and can also even out new players with veterans so that there isnt a horrible barrier to entry. The app is also totally free to play and offers a lot of variation so that you can endlessly play. But I started getting really irritated with this game within the last 6 months or so. They released two new decks, the Mach Strike and Imperial Command decks. These decks are so overpowered compared to all the decks released. Its very easy to do essentially one-hit kill damage within three, if not two turns. Occasionally you can come back to win if you get really lucky and if you quite literally play your cards right. But good luck getting to that point, because half of the people I play with use this deck to just grind. They quit out immediately if things start going south, and it drives me up the wall. I love playing a game that goes for a solid 10 minutes and provides a good challenge between two equally matched players, and this has become so few and far between because everyone just uses the same two decks because theyre the best, and no one actually wants a challenge. I wish Pokémon would change these decks or get rid of them entirely, because theyve ruined the fun and balance of the game.
