A new GamesBeat event is around the corner! Learn more about what comes next.

Pokémon Go Trainer Battles are live, which means that players can engage in direct player-to-player duels for the first time.

Niantic said today that players can now fight in player-vs.-player Trainer Battles at levels 10 and up in Pokémon Go. The new feature comes two-and-a-half years after the debut of the location-based game, which has generated more than $2 billion in revenues and reached more than 800 million players, at last count. Niantic had to bring other features, like friends

While Trainers have been able to participate competitively in Gym battles and cooperatively in Raid Battles thus far, now they can go head to head in battles where three of their creatures square off against three from the other players collection.

When it comes to creating a fun and engaging Trainer Battle experience, we had to strike a careful balance, Niantic said in a blog post. On one hand, we wanted the system to be easy and straightforward enough for any Trainer even someone relatively unfamiliar with the mechanics of Pokémon video games. At the same time, we wanted to create a unique competitive experience that gave Trainers who are passionate about battle an avenue to create complex strategies. We accomplished this balance by implementing Trainer Battle Leagues and creating even more opportunities for Trainers to build battle strategies.

What Are Pokemon Go’s Level Requirements For Battling

How Gyms And Fighting Work In ‘pokemon Go’

Pokémon Go Battle League guide: PvP ranks and rewards ...

Nintendo and Niantic Labs’ mobile hit Pokemon GO might revolve around catching little monsters in the world around you, but as in all Pokemon games, the catching is only half the adventure. Pokemon is all about having your monsters fight other people’s, and in Pokemon GO, that only happens at gyms. Read on to find out how battling and gyms work in the new game.

First off, we’ll have to find a gym. It’s not hard: they’re the biggest things on the in-game map, and usually located at prominent real-world meeting places. Just look for the white pedestal surrounded by spotlights. If you don’t see one nearby, zoom out and look around: they’re visible pretty far off in the distance. Some gyms might be blank, but a few days into the game and most of them will likely have been claimed by a trainer already, so the gym will be either blue, yellow or red. You’ll have to be level 5 to fight at a gym, and that’s when you’ll choose your allegiance to one of those three teams.

If you want to fight, you go to the gym and hit the battle button in the lower right. You’ll select some Pokemon and then head to an arena-looking location. At that point, you just tap the enemy to attack, and swipe left or right to dodge the enemy’s attacks. It’s pretty automatic, to be honest. Once the little blue bars in the upper left fill up, you can hold down on the screen to unleash a special attack, which will usually do more damage.

How To Start Battling In Pokmon Go

Pokemon GO Battle Leagues are *the* new PvP format which will see players take part in the new PVP Trainer Battles. The Pokemon GO trainer battles will take place in different leagues. Players have to choose one of the three leagues before taking part but each league has a maximum Combat Power limit.

Great, Ultra and Master League explained:

  • Great League: 1,500 CP limit per Pokemon

  • Ultra League: 2,500 CP limit per Pokemon

  • Master League: No CP limit per Pokemon

The Official Pokemon GO Twitter handle wrote:

“While Pokémon with high CP might be a big advantage in Master League battles, Trainers will have to think more strategically when battling in the Great and Ultra Leagues, where there are specific CP limitations.”

This means that players are actually encouraged to analyse which creatures they would choose to bring into PvP battles!

Take Down Pokemon Defending Gym

To defeat the gym, you must defeat the Pokemon that are defending it. There can be up to 6 Pokemon you’ll need to face and to completely kick them out, you have to bring their CP & motivation to 0.

Check Order Of Pokemon Left Behind

Before starting the battle, check the order of the Pokemon left behind. The first one dropped into the gym is the first you’ll battle. This will make it easy for you to determine your lineup of attacking Pokemon.

Build Party Exploiting Defending Pokemon’s Weaknesses

After you’ve determined the order of Pokemon you’ll face, build a lineup of strong Pokemon that counter the defending Pokemon’s strengths. Use Pokemon with attack moves that are the weakness of the defending Pokemon to easily defeat them.

Pokemon Get Kicked Out When CP & Motivation Run Out

When you defeat a defending Pokemon, their CP & motivation meter will go down. You need to defeat each Pokemon several times to get these numbers to 0, kicking them out & leaving the gym defenseless for you to take over.

What Do Trainer Battles Look Like

The battle mechanics in Pokémon Go have always been a bit simpler and more straight forward than the turn-based system in the core games. Each Pokémon has one Fast Move, and one or two Charged Moves. Using your Fast Move charges up your Pokémon to deliver the more powerful Charged Move. If all your Pokémon faint first, you lose the battle. This is all true for trainer Battles as well, but there are a couple of key differences.

First, and most importantly, you cannot swipe to dodge your opponent’s attacks. What you can do, however, is use a shield to defend against a particular Charged Move. You only get two shields per battle so use them carefully! You probably don’t want to waste a shield one a Pokémon who is one hit away from fainting, but if your Pokémon is ready to use a Charged Move of its own, that’s definitely a good time to use that shield. Timing is key!

Trainer battles are also different in that they’re divided up into Leagues. The Great League allows Pokémon up to CP 1,500, the Ultra League caps at 2,500 CP, and the Master League has no CP limit. While that might seem pretty straight forward, it actually has a significant impact on gameplay. There are some Pokémon that do really well in the Great League but could never hold their own in the Ultra League or Master League. Selecting the right Pokémon for the League you’re battling in can be a real challenge.

Don’t Use Protect Shields Right Away

Trainers get two Protect Shields to use that will nullify the opponent’s Charged Attack. Although most trainers will use these right away to block the first two Charged Attack, it’s worth considering if that’s a wise move. For example do you want to use a shield to protect a Pokémon that has one HP left from a Charged Attack, when the next Fast Attack would force it to faint anyway? Is it worth protecting your Gyrados from a Vaporeon’s Aqua Tail, that wouldn’t do too much damage anyway?
