Holographic First Edition Machamp: $6000

The Kanto starters and legendaries aren’t the only original Pokemon to boast high-value shadowless holographic cards. Nearly any holographic first edition rare card from the original set can grow immensely in price compared to other rare Pokemon cards, but since they arent as actively hunted, their prices can vary far more wildly based on their quality.

Machamp is one of these. According to PSA Cards range of auction prices based on the cards quality classification, perfect mint condition Machamps of this kind can land between $800 and $6000, while dropping just one rating down will result in prices around $200 and $900. This card in particular truly proves how important it is to keep your trading cards safe through the years, as you never know just what will become valuable twenty years later.

Buying Guide For Best Pokmon Booster Boxes

Ethan Miah

The Pokémon Trading Card Game first launched in the United States in October of 1998, and American Pokémon fans instantly fell in love with the highly customizable, collectible card game as it blossomed from its initial 151 creatures to well over 800 and counting years later.

Some Pokémon TCG enthusiasts arent satisfied with buying individual booster packs of 10 cards a piece, and those who want to quickly complete their collections or optimize their competitive decks with the best Pokémon cards that each set has to offer often look to buying booster boxes instead. Every Pokémon booster box contains 36 individual booster packs, and since the average Pokémon TCG series offers 130 to over 210 individual Pokémon cards to collect, its easy to see why a booster box is a great alternative for dedicated fans.

While we wish that we couldve caught em all, we investigated more than enough Pokémon booster boxes to know how to decide which ones are the best choice for Pokéfans.

Black Star Ishihara Signed Gx Promo Card

A card featuring the Pokémon Company’s President himself.

Sold for $247,230 in April 2021

The most recent card to make headlines for pure value, this card sold for nearly a quarter of a million dollars at auction on April 26th 2021. You can find the full details at our story here, but this card depicts Pokémon Company founder and current president Tsunekazu Ishihara, and was given to the company staff as a celebration of the man’s 60th birthday in 2017.

That makes the card rare, but this specific version is even rarer, as Ishihara actually signed this near-mint card to boost its price even further. The “2017 P.M. SM Black Star #TPCi01 Tsunekazu Ishihara Signed Pokémon GX Promo Card”, to use its full title, is a testament to the raw power apparently held by the Pokémon president. The ability “Red Chanchanko” is in reference to the red vest traditionally worn on 60th birthdays in Japan, and prevents the effect of any attack, ability or trainer card against Ishihara. Meanwhile, its GX move “60 Congratulations”, tells you to flip 60 coins, and take a present for each one. A truly legendary card.

Blastoise Wizards Of The Coast Presentation Galaxy Star Holo

Top 10 Most Expensive Pokémon Cards
  • Release Date: 1998
  • Grading: CGG 8.5
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $360,000

The Pokemon Trading Card Game community was stunned when this insanely rare Pokemon card was discovered by the public for the first time in 2021. Originally commissioned by Wizards of the Coast in 1998, the Blastoise Presentation card was supposed to give stores an idea of what the TCG line would look like in its final print run.

While there are varying reports about its history, its currently believed that only two are known to have ever existed, with only one currently accounted for. Its essentially is one of the earliest known Pokemon cards to exist, at least for the North American release. It was so early that one of the copies had a Magic: The Gathering backside to it, while the other is simply blank.

The historical Nintendo artifact went up for sale at Heritage Auctions in January 2021, and sold for a whopping $360,000, making it the third most expensive collectible just an inch behind the Base Set Charizard. Given that only two of these exist, it could one day take the top spot as the most valuable Pokemon card of all time. If nothing else it may be the rarest Pokemon card in the world.

Why Are Pokmon Cards So Expensive

The answer to this lies in the rarity of the cards as well as the fact that the game has grown into a beloved franchise over the past three decades. This global love and admiration ensure that on the few occasions that the company manufactures new cards, they are snapped up like hotcakes. It also means that the old cards which are no more in production become highly-coveted items for fans of the franchise.

Pokemon Japanese Promo Family Event Holo Kangaskhan Trophy Card

Sold in October, 2020 for $150,100

Another holy-grail trophy card, the 1998 Japanese Promo Kangaskhan Family Event card, continues to be one of the rarest and most desirable of all Pokemon cards.

This card is especially interesting compared to other trophy cards because teams consisting of a parent and child battled each other to obtain it, which was an admirable effort to build family bonding.

Fittingly, the tournament organizers chose none other than Kangaskhan, a kangaroo-like Pokemon with a baby Kangaskhan in her pouch, as the trophy card mascot.

Just 47 examples have made their way across PSAs grading table, with eleven assessed in PSA 10 condition.

How To Keep And Store Pokemon Cards

Pokemon cards should be stored safely with binders and card sleeves specially made for storing cards .

Generally, a 2-3 inch binder is recommended because it can hold enough cards while being not too heavy to carry around. If you or your kid have just started to collect Pokemon cards, I suggest you buy an extra binder because you wont believe how fast the collection grows!

Just in case you want to make it even better, there are Pokemon themed binders which have padded binder pages to keep your cards safe.

As the collection grows, you can add extra binder pages to your binder and store more cards in the same binder saving you some money

Do you own an extremely rare Pokemon card? Well, in that case, I recommend using hard case sleeves to keep them extra secure.

What Is The Strongest Pokemon Card

A recent rare Yu-Gi-Oh! card thats strong, but few, in numbers

Sold for $6,500 in December 2020

Image: wherebare27/eBay

The first card on this list is the one released most recently, which is unusual as rare and valuable Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are often older releases. In an effort to raise spirits during the COVID-19 pandemic, Konami launched the Remote Duel at Home promo, a promotional sweepstake in North America where 300 Secret Rare copies of the spell card United We Stand were handed to fortunate housebound duelists. In order to be eligible, duelists had to interact with either of the official Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Twitter or Instagram accounts, providing a photo of their remote duel setup along with the hashtag #YGORemoteDuel.

United We Stand #EN001 is an equip spell that boosts a monsters attack and defence by 800 points for each monster that you control. This means that if you have all five monster zones used, you can potentially boost your monsters attack by 4000, allowing you to bring down your opponents life points in one or two turns . The choice of card is fittingly apt by Konami, as the whole world is united together in an effort to fight the global pandemic.

Show off how you are playing #YuGiOh at home for the chance to win an exclusive Secret Rare version of United We Stand with blue foil lettering! Use hashtag #YGORemoteDuel with a photo of your Dueling setup at home to enter.

Japanese Topsun Charizard Blue Back

Estimated Average Market Value Unknown

The most expensive Pokemon card on this list was also more than likely one of the cheapest Pokemon cards to buy in history You cant help but smile at the irony.

In 1997, a Japanese company known as Top-Seika obtained the rights to feature Pokémon on card inserts that would be included with the sale of packets of chewing gum the gum was apple flavored in case youre curious.

Each packet would contain 2 pieces of gum along with two cards from the Topsun promotion. Each packet was sold at only 60 Yen thats approximately $0.60!

The set contained a wide variety of Pokémon from generation 1 alongside Charizard and there were even misprinted versions released.

But what makes this card so special, besides the fact that it features fan favorite Charizard, is the Blue back.

In what would later become typical of Pokemon cards, intentionally or not, the cards were released in waves similar to how the original base set of Pokémon cards came in editions First Edition, Shadowless and Unlimited.

In the case of the Topsun insert cards, what we might refer to today as a First Edition card, was a Topsun insert card that had a blue back and featured no number on the top left border of the card name.

This record breaking Charizard is just such a card.

There a few live listings of this card, but I expect them to sold quickly even with a lower PSA score.
