Pokemon Sword & Shield: How To Beat Every Gym Leader

Sixth Gym Leader Gordie | Pokémon Sword & Shield Walkthrough – Part 8

This guide will go over the strengths and weaknesses of every gym leader and their Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch.

With the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield, one of the staple features of the franchise has returned: gym leaders. The Trial Captains and Kahunas of the Alola Region in Pokémon Sun and Moon were met with mixed reception, but this time, gym leaders fit a prominent role within Galar. Players embark on what is called the Gym Leader Challenge, which means they need to collect eight badges in order to be eligible to become the Champion of the region.

Unlike previous games where players had to defeat the Elite Four to become Champion, they will need to enter a tournament of the top trainers in the region. These trainers include gym leaders, the main character’s rival Hop, and the undefeated, reigning Champion himself, Leon.

The game’s progression is tied to the number of gym badges the trainer has. As the number increases, they are able to catch stronger Pokémon and access newer places. Each gym leader specializes in a certain Pokémon type, so having a balanced team is essential. Players will need to face eight gym leaders in total before they can enter the tournament, but for the first time in Pokémon history, there are exclusive gym leaders for each game.

Pokmon Sword And Shield Milo

The first gym you encounter is in Turffield, and its home to Milo, a master of grass-type Pokémon. As hes the first gym leader, he only has two creatures on his team, both of which you can wipe out with a fire-type Pokémon.

However, to face him, you must complete the gym mission. You need to assemble a herd of Wooloo into their pens. Yes, you read that right. This is Pokémon meets Farming Simulator.

Kabu Motostoke Gym Leader

So far, the road to Pokémon Cup Challenge hasnt been too daunting. That all changes with your third Gym challenge, as Kabu is ready to burn to ashes any who dare stand in his way. After facing Gym Leaders who favoured Grass and Water, Kabu is pretty much the final introductory challenge in Pokémon’s signature system of elemental rock-paper-scissors, and you better believe that youll want to have a few Pokémon who are capable of dousing his flames.

Kabus gym challenge isnt too difficult. Youll be tasked with capturing or knocking out Pokémon: Either the wild ones in the grass around you, or you can quickly take out the gym trainers who send their own critters into the field to make your life a bit of a hassle. On the bonus side, youll be able to keep any Pokémon that you catch here, such as a handy Litwick which can evolve into a Chandelure or a Sizzlipede, whose ultimate form youll get acquainted with real soon.

  • Ninetales Level 25 Fire-type
  • Arcanine Level 25 Fire-type
  • Centiskorch Level 27 Fire and Bug-type

With Kabus fire extinguished, youll be awarded the Fire Badge, the Fire Uniform, the ability to catch Pokémon up to level 35 and TM38 Will-o-The-Wisp. Your next challenge awaits you in Stow-On-Side, past the dustiest hills and most ancient of ruins that foretold of the Darkest Day.

Kabu Leader Of The Motostoke Gym

Ninetales / Fire / Level 25

Centiskorch / Fire and Bug / Level 27

  • Flame Wheel
  • Bug Bite
  • Smokescreen

Kabu is the third gym leader that players will face on the Gym Challenge. In the game, he is described as the wall that most trainers can’t get passed. While his Fire-type Pokémon are powerful, they are extremely vulnerable defensively. Fire-type Pokémon are weak to many common types like Water, Ground, and Rock. Trainers who chose Sobble will breeze through this gym pretty easily, but luckily for the others, there are a lot of options for them to choose from.

Players can catch Drilbur, a Ground-type Pokémon that evolves into one of the strongest Pokémon in the game, Excadrill. Other options are Lotad or Rolycoly, a Rock Pokémon who evolves into the interesting Rock and Fire-type Coalossal. Trainers can also catch Chewtle, who evolves into Nessa’s signature Pokémon, Drednaw.

Two of Kabu’s Pokémon have Will-O-Wisp which burns Pokémon, damaging them residually and lowering their Attack stat by one half, so players should bring a couple of Burn Heals to take care of that. Kabu’s signature Pokémon, Centiskorch, is a unique Bug and Fire-type that can decimate unprepared teams. Its move Coil raises its Attack, Defense, and Accuracy. If players don’t defeat it quickly after it Dynamaxes, they can be in some serious trouble. With its type, Rock-type moves will deal 4x damage to it, making Drednaw or Rolycoly both strong options to use against it.

Pokmon Sword And Shield Nessa

Pokemon Sword 6th Gym

Nessa is the second gym leader, and you can find her in Hulbury. Her type of choice is water, which is highly susceptible to attacks from grass and electric-types. If you start with Grookey, this fight will be over before she even knows whats occurring.

When you first arrive in town, Nessa is at the lighthouse. You must speak to her here, or she wont return to the gym. After this, you need to work your way through a maze that changes paths and fills with water. Once youre out the other side, you can face Nessa.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Badges

All the Pokemon Sword and Shield badges eventually fit together to make a glorious coin-like structure, which you can view on the League Card section of the menu. Unfortunately you can’t shine it like you could in old games, but I would pay serious money to have one in real life.

    Milo Turffield Gym Leader

Every journey starts somewhere, and the first stop on the Gym Challenge quest is a showdown against the master of Grass-type Pokémon, Milo! The burly gym leader is your first obstacle, but not an insurmountable one. In the Turffield Gym after you herd several unruly Wooloo into their pens, youll have plenty of options to field in battle against Milos green squad especially if you chose the Fire-type Scorbunny as your starter Pokémon and have by now levelled it up to its first evolutionary form, Raboot.

Otherwise, a solid flying type such as Rookiedee once it evolves into Corvisquire or a Bug-Type such as Caterpie evolved into Butterfree will help you score your first victory goal. Heres a look at Milos team:

    • Gossifleur Level 19 Grass-type
    • Eldegoss Level 20 Grass-type, can be Dynamaxed

With Milo down for the count, youve just completed the first step on the road to Pokémon glory. For your hard work, youll earn the Grass Badge, the Grass Uniform, the ability to catch Pokémon up to level 25 and TM10 Magical Leaf. Once Gym Leader down, another seven to go!

    Opal Ballonlea Gym Leader

Pink! Ballonleas gym leader just loves seeing that colour on other people and she wont hesitate to repeat this fact several times. Pink also happens to be the primary colour of the Fairy-Type Pokémon, the pocket monsters that Opal specialises in. Over at her gym, the challenge ahead of you is a simple one: Battle three gym trainers in a row, and answer a question during every match. Get it right and youll earn a stat boost for the round. Get it wrong and prepare for a temporary downgrade.

Most of these questions are tricky to answer, so dont gravitate towards the obvious answer if you can. As a Fairy-type Gym Leader, Opals team is naturally strong against the likes of Fighting, Dragon and Dark-type Pokémon. They massively weak against Poison and Steel-types though, so make certain that your team has a few toxic and heavy metal options ready.

If you caught a Rookiedee earlier in the game, it should have evolved into Corviknight by now, a sturdy Flying and Steel-type Pokémon that can dish out big damage. The Toxel you picked up at the Route 5 Pokémon Day Care should have also learnt Poison Jab after it evolved into Toxtricity, or you can grab a few other Poison-type and Steel-type pocket monsters to pad out your team: Think Skorupi on Route 6, Meowths Galar region variant on Route 4 or a Koffing found in the Motostoke Outskirts. With your squad sorted, heres the team that Opal will send against you:

Opal is the fifth gym leader and she has a passion for fairy-type Pokémon, yet just one of her four creatures is pure fairy. Three of them have a secondary type too.

We hope youre ready for a quick Q& A as this gym mission requires you to answer some questions. You must face other trainers in battles, then from time to time, Opal pipes up with a question. If you cant be bothered to think, not to worry, we have the answers:

    • Do you know about fairy-types weaknesses? Poison or steel
    • What was the previous trainers name? Annette
    • What do I eat for breakfast every morning? Omelettes

Get all of those right for some stat boosts.
