How Much Is The Pokemon Expansion Pass

Are There Any Version

Pokemon Sword / Shield Expansion Pass Review

Yes. Nintendo has stated that each version of the Expansion Pass will feature version-exclusive Pokémon and characters.

Currently, returning Pokémon Clauncher and Clawitzer are Pokémon Sword Isle of Armor exclusives, and Skrelp and Dragalge are Pokémon Shield Isle of Armor exclusives . We’ll update this with more information as it comes to light concerning Crown Tundra exclusives.

The rival Trainer you’ll face depends on the version of the game you have. Pokémon Sword players will face Klara, a Poison-type specialist training at the dojo of Pokémon Master Mustard. Pokémon Shield players will come up against Avery a Psychic-type user also under Mustard’s tutelage.

You Can Teach Certain Pokmon To Gigantamax

One of the frustrating things for me while playing the base Sword and Shield games was realizing that one of my favorite Pokémon couldn’t Gigantamax even though its species had the potential to do so.

The Isle of Armor solves this problem. Feeding Max Soup to a Pokémon with G-Max potential makes it learn how to G-Max. The DLC’s main story that surrounds Kubfu and Urshifu basically serves as a massive tutorial to teach you how to create Max Soup and feed it to your other Pokémon from the Galar region who also have the potential to Gigantamax.

The Expansions Will Introduce Pokemon New And Old

Most excitingly of all, the expansion will introduce Pokemon old and new to the world of Pokemon Sword and Shield. Both of the new areas will feature Pokemon forms unique to that region, newly discovered legendary Pokemon, and add some familiar Pokemon from past generations. Yep, that’s right. Some Pokemon from past generations are on the way.

You can also try out a sneak peek demo of the beginning of the story for the Isle of Armor expansion as of today, January 9. Doing so will get you a Galarian Slowpoke, a new regional form that can also evolve into Galarian Slowbro using an item found in Isle of Armor or a Galarian Slowking using an item in the Crown Tundra. You can see the description for the new Slowpoke form below:

Galarian Slowpoke

Weight: 231.5 lbsAbility: Unseen Fist

Kubfu evolves into Urshifu after it has undergone “sufficient training.” Urshifu is a Fighting/ Dark type Pokemon, but it also has two different forms that have varying types – Single Strike and Rapid Strike Style forms. The Single Strike form favours battling without holding back, with more direct movements that often involve rushing forward in a straight line. The Rapid Strike form on the other hand maintain a calm demeanour and observe their opponents, with flowing movements to parry moves and rapidly strike as the name suggests. Both of the different forms also have Gigantamax forms.

Weight: 17lbsAbility: Unnerve

Pokmon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass Review What I Don’t Like

Game Freak has traditionally released a follow-up game of some kind after releasing the first set of games in any given Generation. For example, after the launch of Ruby and Sapphire, Game Freak released Emerald. Similarly, after Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon followed. So it wasn’t too surprising that the Japanese game developers created some extra DLC for Sword and Shield. However, it is a bit costly considering what you’re getting.

I was able to beat both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra’s main storylines in just a few hours.

All in all, I was able to finish the main storylines for both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra within a few hours. Granted, this was partial because my Pokémon were already at high levels from playing the original game, so the Expansion Pass battles weren’t very challenging for me. That being said, Klara and Mustard’s Pokémon were all between level 60 and level 75, so they won’t be a walk in the park for everyone.

Beyond the new story details, filling in the expanded Pokédex and finding the previously mentioned Digletts do add a lot of time to your Expansion Pass experience. I realize that a lot of work had to go into creating all of these additional Pokémon and locations, but I feel like the DLC was a bit overpriced. But if you like the idea of being able to catch multiple Legendaries from previous games, you definitely ought to buy it.

Dynamax Adventures & Rental Pokmon

Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass news coming ...

Once you’ve gotten to a certain point within the Crown Tundra, you’ll be able to go into special caves and experience a new co-op play mode called Dynamax Adventures. Here, you’ll team up with up to three other players and explore the various caverns as you continue to make your way into the depths.

Rental Pokémon in Dynamax Adventures

Thing is, the official Pokémon website has explained that you won’t be able to bring Pokémon from your own party into the these special dens.

Instead of your regular Pokémon team, you and your fellow Trainers will choose rental Pokémon to bring along into the depths of the den. If you encounter a wild Dynamax Pokémon during your exploration, you’ll need to work together with your three teammates in a Max Raid Battle! If you win the battle, you’ll have the chance to catch the Pokémon, and one Trainer on the team can swap the newly caught Pokémon in for the Pokémon they had before. But if you lose a battle, you’ll be ejected from the den!

You’ll need to make it far into the cave’s depths if you want a chance to defeat and capture a Legendary Pokémon. Or, if you simply like the challege, you can sign up for the Endless Dynamax Adventures, which allow you to continue fighting your way through the caves until you finally lose a battle.

What We Said About The Base Game

From our November 2019 Pokemon Sword and Shield review by Casey DeFreitas:

“Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are closer to my dream Pokemon RPGs than anything thats come before. Id still like better cutscenes, companion Pokemon, the complete Pokedex, and a more visually interesting Wild Area, but nitpicks are just not very effective when everything else was such a complete joy to play. The way they respect my time is wonderful, and the removal of monotony from random encounters and other odds and ends distills it down to only the pure and charming fun of capturing, training, and battling wonderful creatures. And hey, if Im missing any tedious repetition, I can always get back into breeding.”

What Are The New Areas From The Pokmon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass

Here’s Nintendo’s official blurb for each of the two new areas found in the Galar region. First, The Isle of Armor:

Pokmon Can Now Follow You In The Overworld

Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass – Nintendo Direct Mini 3.26.20

I was upset when I learned that Pokémon couldn’t follow you around in the original Sword and Shield games. This had been something that had been implemented in a few previous games including Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

When I realized that the Isle of Armor finally made it possible for my favorite Pokémon to follow me around, I became ecstatic. I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent swapping out the first Pokémon in my party and taking pictures of my favorite Pokémon trailing behind me.

Nintendo Announces Pokemon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass

Todays Pokemon Direct was packed with news, including the arrival of the Expansion Pass for Pokemon Sword and Shield. This will include two expansions The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, bringing with it tonnes of new content. Just as the names suggest, a new location for Isle of Armor will be taking place on a small island or isle, while The Crown Tundra is a snowy region inspired by the highlands of Scotland. Both regions are inspired by the United Kingdom. Game director Shigeru Ohmori shared:

In the Expansion Pass, players will visit two brand new areas, the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. The Isle of Armor is a location inspired by the Isle of Man, an island situated just off the coast of the United Kingdom, and the Crown Tundra is a snowy landscape inspired by Scotland.

But not only are there new locations to explore, but new outfits , new Gigantamax forms, some interesting new features and more Pokemon to catch.

You wont need to finish playing Pokemon Sword and Shield to start the expansion either, but you will need to have reached the Wild Area before you can start. As there is a lot of content, Im going to break it down into parts:

How Big Is The Crown Tundra And Where Is It

From what Nintendo has said, it sounds like the Crown Tundra will be much, much larger than the Isle of Armor’s map. Here, players will be encouraged to explore a vast environment that operates a lot like the Wild Area in the main Sword and Shield games. Players can see Pokémon walking around and simply need to touch them to initiate a battle. As with the main Wild Area, there will also be several different Pokémon dens so players can engage in Max Raid Battles with other players online.

While some of the map does take place on snowy mountain tops, the Crown Tundra seems to be more of a balanced Yinyang. A baren, snow-covered tree can be found at the tallest peak surrounded by ice while far below it in the valley a pink-leaved tree stands proudly amid rolling green hills. It looks like players will get to explore both the valley as well as the snow-capped peaks during their expedition.

Here’s a follow-up on The Crown Tundra map.Fly locations without designated weather are indoor locations of interest. These can be compared to Master Dojo, Tower of Darkness, Tower of Waters, etc.Full map with corresponding flag names coming soon!
