Pokémon Sword and Shield: The Crown Tundra is the second of two expansion packs in the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass for the 2019 role-playing video gamesPokémon Sword and Shield on Nintendo Switch. It is developed by Game Freak and published by The Pokémon Company and Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It was released on October 22, 2020. It follows The Isle of Armor, which had been released on June 17, 2020. The Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass physical bundle pack was released on November 6, 2020.

The addition of Expansion Pass was to replace the need for a third version or sequel of Sword and Shield. It is set in the snowy southern area called the Crown Tundra, based on Scotland, in Sword and Shield‘s region of Galar. The player controls the protagonist during their journey through the tundra, home to new and old legendary Pokémon from past games.

Original Story : At the end of last month, The Pokémon Company revealed that a new, special physical release was on the way for Pokémon Sword and Shield, with both games being bundled with their respective DLC packs. No pricing was confirmed at the time, but early pre-orders give us an indication of how much it’ll likely cost.

Amazon now has live listings for the new bundles in the US, it’s currently available to pre-order for $89.99, while those in the UK can grab a copy for £69.99. You can see those listings for yourself below.

The standalone games have a recommended retail price of $59.99 / £49.99, so you’re essentially paying $30 / £20 for the DLC to be included here. The RRP for the Expansion Pass separately is $29.99 / £26.99, so it all adds up to a similar amount.

Pokmon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass Cost And How Each Version Works Explained

The Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion pass will cost £26.99 / $29.99.

This cost will include both expansion passes – The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve got Pokémon Sword or Shield – you’ll be able to play both of expansions.

What you do need to do, however, is buy the expansion version that is compatible with the game, Sword or Shield, that you originally brought.

This is because, just like with previous Pokémon games, each expansion will have a set of Pokémon which are exclusive to the version, be it Sword or Shield, that they’re compatible with.

If you buy the wrong expansion version, then you won’t be able to play it! So be careful when you purchase the expansions.

Currently, there are two pre-order bonuses to entice you into buying the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion pass – a Pikachu Uniform and an Eevee Uniform.

You’ll also receive Leon’s cap and tights if you purchase the Expansion Pass between the release date of The Isle of Armour and the 31st August.

Why Doesn’t Sword And Shield Have All Pokmon

Game Freak explained that including all the Pokémon not in Sword and Shield would have been too big a project for developers, and they wanted to take the time that originally would have been spent adding old species to focus on other mechanics, like the exploration of the Wild Area and Max Raid encounters.

How The Expansions Work

Pokémon Sword + Pokémon Sword Expansion Pass, Nintendo Switch [Digital ...

Both expansions are open areas similar to the Wild Area which include Pokemon Dens and Max Raid Battles, but have new characters and storylines. They can be accessed as soon as you reach the Wild Area, regardless of whether you have beaten the main story or not. However, each expansion area has additional end-game content. There are also additional cosmetic options and clothing introduced in each expansion.

You can access a free sneak-peek at the expansion pass content in the base game by going to Wedgehurst Station and speaking to the new trainer there – Klara in Sword or Avery in Shield.

Is The Crown Tundra Free

The Crown Tundra is included in the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass alongside the games previous DLC, The Isle of Armor. The Expansion Pass costs $30 USD / £27. The expansions cannot be purchased individually, and each version of the game requires its own corresponding Expansion Pass to access the DLC.

Pokmon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass Review Bottom Line

The Expansion Pass is a fun little splash of extra content that gives players more of the Galar region to enjoy. Key among these new experiences are the brand new storylines surrounding the Legendary Pokémon Kubfu and Calyrex. I also love having the ability to walk around the Isle of Armor or the Crown Tundra with my favorite Pokémon trailing behind me as I discover new places.

Considering how short the DLC storyline is, the $30 price tag is a bit costly. However, if you’re the kind of person that loves filling out a Pokédex and meeting new Pokémon then this will definitely be a fun way to expand upon that.

What Do I Need To Do To Travel To The Isle Of Armor

Once you’ve purchased your DLC Expansion Pass and your game has finished updating, you’re probably ready to head off to the Isle of Armor. Probably. See, if you’ve already beat the game, you’ll have no problem getting there. If you haven’t beat the game yet, you might still be able to travel to the Isle of Armor as long as you’ve made enough progress. You’ll need to be able to travel to Wedgehurst Station, and you’ll need to have access to the Wild Area. Once you’ve met these conditions, you’ll be allowed to make the trip to the new DLC area.

However, as soon as you do get to the Isle of Armor, you’ll be challenged by one of your new rivals: Avery if you’re playing Pokémon Shield or Klara if you’re playing Pokémon Sword. They only bring two Pokémon to battle, but their Pokémon are pretty strong! If you can’t beat level ~60 Pokémon, you should make a little more progress in the game before traveling to the Isle of Armor.

Pokmon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass Review What I Don’t Like

Game Freak has traditionally released a follow-up game of some kind after releasing the first set of games in any given Generation. For example, after the launch of Ruby and Sapphire, Game Freak released Emerald. Similarly, after Sun and Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon followed. So it wasn’t too surprising that the Japanese game developers created some extra DLC for Sword and Shield. However, it is a bit costly considering what you’re getting.

I was able to beat both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra’s main storylines in just a few hours.

All in all, I was able to finish the main storylines for both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra within a few hours. Granted, this was partial because my Pokémon were already at high levels from playing the original game, so the Expansion Pass battles weren’t very challenging for me. That being said, Klara and Mustard’s Pokémon were all between level 60 and level 75, so they won’t be a walk in the park for everyone.

Beyond the new story details, filling in the expanded Pokédex and finding the previously mentioned Digletts do add a lot of time to your Expansion Pass experience. I realize that a lot of work had to go into creating all of these additional Pokémon and locations, but I feel like the DLC was a bit overpriced. But if you like the idea of being able to catch multiple Legendaries from previous games, you definitely ought to buy it.
