Even though there is a seemingly endless number of cards you can collect, you can learn the game and have hours of fun by picking up a few theme decks. Again if you are new to the Pokemon TCG and want to give it a try, we recommend grabbing a few of the newest theme decks, like these below.
Given the number of previously released cards, we also do not recommend trying to catch up by buying booster boxes from older sets. If there are older cards that catch your eye , you can buy individual cards from websites like TCGPlayer.com.
If you play the game and love it, the best way to expand your collection is by keeping up with future sets. Some players only buy a handful of packs when a new set releases and buy the rest of the cards they want as singles. Most, however, buy anywhere between one and three boosters boxes every time a new set is released. How many boxes you buy really depends on your budget and the experience you want to have.
Buying one booster box is enough to give you a variety of cards from a set. This will let you get a feel for the new cards and inform your decision to purchase more packs or buy specific singles. This is a great way to go, particularly if you only plan to play across the kitchen table or are really just looking to enjoy the game with friends and family.

Prepare To Be Disappointed With Your Grades
It is really difficult to get cards graded 9s or 10s. Especially on older cards. Cards need to be centered perfectly. The have to be cut perfectly. They cant have dings to the corners, or white edges, or surface scratches. There can be no roughness on the face or edges. Look closely at the holofoil artwork for Any Scratches. Turn the card over, and look for any whiteness around the blue edges.
Many older cards you might think are perfect seem to come back as 7s or 8s. 10s basically have to be protected from the get-go taken directly from a booster pack and highly protected immediately. Most people werent doing that 20 years ago. Ive sent in about 30 cards myself and maybe got two to three cards rated 10. And these were all cards that went right from boosters to binders .
You should understand that 7s and 8s and 9s are still really good scores though! Those are Near Mint or better! Whether its comic books, coins or Pokemon Cards the higher the score, the better the selling price.

If you try to play Pokémon without energy cards, you should keep in mind that you should have some unique energy cards to fight in the battle.

If you have a 1st Edition Charizard that you think is worth $25,000, the grading on that one card will cost you more. Thats because the grading companies need to get more insurance for your card in case something happens to it under their care. This is usually well documented at each grading companys site.
Modified Vs Unlimited Tournament Styles

Like other trading card games, Pokèmon also has a specific guide, game rules for players to get started. Whether you are playing by yourself or with a groups of friends, learn the basic rules to begin the game on the right foot.
Here are important Pokèmon card game rules for beginners to know beforehand:
- Each player has a unique deck of a collection of 60 cards, which consist energy cards, trainer cards, Pokémon cards, and item cards.
- Each player picks up to five Pokémon on the bench at any turn of the game.
- Except for the active Pokémon, others that are not in play are put on the bench.
- At the beginning of every turn, each player draws seven cards that are kept hidden in the hand.

Structure Of A Pokemon Card
Basic/Stage 1/Stage 2: This determines what the pokemon evolves from. If there is a picture of a Pokemon in this area, that the card evolves from that Pokemon. Basic means that it doesn’t evolve from anything, stage 1 means it evolves from a basic, and stage two means it evolves from a stage 1. To evolve, place the card on top of its former evolution. Play the card as if the bottom Pokemon is not there anymore.
Name: This determines what the card is. You may only play four repeats of a card in official TCG tournaments. In prerelease you may play as many as you wish.
Hit points : This determines how much damage the Pokemon can take. For example, Gardevoir GX can take 220 before it is knocked out at 230.
Card Type: There are many different types in the Pokemon trading card game. This type here is a fairy type. Typing plays a factor in hitting for weakness and resistance as well as energy requirements, which will be explained later in this step.
Ability: Abilities can be used as many times per turn unless stated otherwise. You do not have to be in the active to use an ability either.
Attack: Every Pokemon has an attack. An attack is something that can do damage or provide an effect but either way attacking ends your turn. This attack does 30 damage times the amount of energy on both active Pokemon.
Resistance: Almost every Pokemon has a resistance. A distance just means that the stated Pokemon type does 20 less damage.
