Pokemon Sword And Shield Director Explains Reasoning Behind Controversial Feature

Pokemon Sword and Shield on Nintendo Switch are making some notable changes to the series, some of which have been applauded, others of which have landed developer Game Freak in hot water with fans. One of the more controversial features has been the removal of traditional Exp. Share, which has been replaced by a new blanket-like Exp. Share. For those that don’t know: Exp. Share has been an item in the games for awhile that you can give to a Pokemon. This Pokemon would get experience even if it wasn’t in battle. All it had to be was in the party. This form of Exp. Share is no longer an item in Pokemon Sword and Shield though. Now, experience will be shared across the whole party. In other words, all the Pokemon in your party will get experience for each battle.

Like everything about Pokemon Sword and Shield, the reveal of this tweak was very divisive. The majority of players either liked the change or were unmoved by it, but the vocal minority weren’t happy about the adjustment. That said, Game Freak is sticking by it, and recently the director of the games, Shigeru Ohmori, explained why Game Freak isn’t letting players turn off the feature.

“Those who have it turned off want to train one specific Pokemon. We thought: is there a way to achieve that? There is, simply by putting the rest of your Pokemon in the PC,” said Ohmori while speaking to InsideGaming.

Pokmon Sword & Shield Help Pull The Player Into The Story

One of the biggest changes in Pokémon Sword and Shield is how fans interact with the narrative. From the start of the game, players have the ability to clearly see their character, as well as customize them for a more immersive and relatable experience. Instead of an arrogant rival and additional characters lacking in personality, players are given a rich narrative made up of complex and emotionally engaging NPCs. Hop and Bede both have struggles that are actively shown as the player encounters them, and the difficulties of being a Gym Leader in the Galar region are encountered in areas like Spikemuth, where Chairman Rose has run the town into the ground after Gym Leader Piers refuses to move his Gym to a location that supports Dynamax and Gigantamax battles.

Pokmon Sword & Shield’s Young Staff Added Their Voices To Galar Development

James Turner (@JamesTurner_42)

In an interview with NintendoEverything, Director Shigeru Omori and planning director Kazumasa Iwao revealed surprising information about the development of Pokémon Sword and Shield. In order to make the game an amazing experience on the Nintendo Switch both in handheld mode or while docked, they knew changes from previous games would need to be made. To help aid in transforming the new Pokémon title, Game Freak gave younger staff new opportunities, bringing new voices into key positions for the game’s development. Additionally, Omori chose to divide work according to the interest of staff members, ensuring that love and passion would help create a polished and authentic feel for the final product.

It is this choice that could likely be why so many gamers have enjoyed the diverse gameplay in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The game offers numerous ways to engage in difficult battles, explore areas, or complete side quests regardless of playstyle. It is also one of the first Pokémon titles to remain relevant long after release thanks to the Max Raid multiplayer battles and events that regularly freshen gameplay. Sword and Shield have also paved the way for future Pokémon titles thanks to experimental gameplay and may have opened the door for the groundbreaking upcoming title Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which will greatly change how players have engaged with a Pokémon journey in past games.

What Makes A Pokmon Rpg

Pokemon.com: Howdo you find the right balance between maintaining the identity of what it meansto be a core Pokémon RPG and introducing new features? Do you ever come up withnew features or mechanics that you decide to not include because they dont fitthe feel of a Pokémon RPG?

Pokémonare mysterious creaturesthey are our friends, and they are thought to havepower that surpasses humans. We make our decisions about the games with thoseelements in mind. For example, one important decision might be whether or notwe should make a certain aspect more convenient in terms of gameplay orprioritize making a Pokémon feel more like a living creature. Another importantcore aspect of the Pokémon games is that while you may first encounter aPokémon as an enemy in battle, that same Pokémon can become your ally if itjoins your team.

Pokemon.com: Afteryou introduce a new feature or mechanic in a Pokémon RPG, how do you determinewhether it will be brought forward into the next games?

Mr. Masuda: Wealways take player feedback into consideration. We also consider what ispossible with the latest evolutions in hardware as well as how peoplesinterests change over time. When coming up with new features and systems, wealso consider how well they will fit in with the existing feature set.

Pokemon Director Explains Pokemon Sword And Shield’s Missing Pokemon

Game Freak director Junichi Masuda has given another explanation why some Pokemon won’t appear in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Earlier this year, Masuda made the shocking announcement that not every Pokemon will be transferable with Pokemon Sword and Shield – making them the first Pokemon games since Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire that wouldn’t allow transfers of Pokemon from past games. At the time Masuda noted that the decision came down to time constraints, as many Pokemon models needed re-done for the new Pokemon games. In an interview posted today by Game Informer, Masuda gave a different explanation for why certain Pokemon won’t appear in the game.

“Up until now, we’ve been proud we’ve been able to include so many Pokemon in the games, but as a result of that, there’s actually been quite a few features or gameplay ideas that we’ve had to abandon in the past,” Masuda said. “Going forward, thinking about the future of Pokemon, we want to prioritize all those new gameplay ideas, new ways to enjoy the game, and want to challenge ourselves at Game Freak to create new ways to enjoy the game. That’s really what drove the decision for this new direction.”

Pokemon Sword And Shield Art Director Shares Inspiration For Early Starters Scene

Pokemon Sword and Shield, the latest and greatest Pokemon game, is now available for Nintendo Switch. The first mainline game for a non-handheld gaming console features some distinct starting Pokemon with vastly different personalities. Unlike previous generations where the three starters were broadly similar in that way, this one takes a slightly different tact — and art director James Turner recently shared a look behind the curtain, so to speak, at one way in which the game introduces these differences.

Turner took to Twitter this weekend to share the inspiration behind a cute little scene between the three starters, Scorbunny, Sobble, and Grookey, in Pokemon Sword and Shield. In the scene, a falling fruit drops into a pond near Sobble, and it causes the Pokemon to jump out, startled. It’s then joined by both Grookey and Scorbunny, each of which seemingly try to calm the Water-type Pokemon down in various ways.

I came up with this little bit at the beginning of the game because I wanted to show the three starters personalities and show how they look out for each other

ComicBook.com’s review of Pokemon Sword and Shieldgave the new games a 4 out of 5, overall. You can check out an excerpt of our review below:

New Pioneer Package With Server Change In Lost Ark

Lost Ark has been better received than many thought. Even Amazon did not expect this rush. And so there were long queues on some servers, as was the case with New World. Since a real server change is not possible, many players simply created a new character on a new server. However, some of these players have already redeemed their pioneer package on the first server and thus used it up unnecessarily.

As Amazon has now announced, we will get an additional set of exclusive items on the new server. These items are bound to the character and thus cannot be traded. They can soon be redeemed on every new server.

During the Head Start period for Lost Ark, a massive number of heroes arrived in Arkesia. While we are thrilled to have so many players joining us, we also recognize that this has brought about large queues on our more popular servers, leading to a less than ideal experience for these players.

In an effort to improve the player experience for those who have faced queues, we will be taking several steps to put preventative measures in place ahead of our full launch tomorrow morning, in addition to addressing some of the outstanding issues surrounding Founders Pack claims.

Turner’s departure from Game Freak is notable as, along with being the art director for Pokemon Sword and Shield, he’s also the first ever Westerner to design Pokemon, beginning with Pokemon Black and White in 2010. Before that, he worked on 2003’s Pokemon Colosseum, 2005’s Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and 2006’s Pokemon Battle Revolution in various capacities, including art director. All in all, he’s created over 20 Pokemon including Shadow Lugia, Buzzwole, and Guzzlord.
