Pokemon Sword And Shield Gym Leaders Guide: Beat All Gym Leaders

How to Beat Fairy Gym Leader Opal – Pokemon Sword Walkthrough Episode 09

Pokemon Sword and Shield are out now and the basic aim of the game is to get strong enough to beat all the gym leaders and win the final championship. In this guide, we are going to go over how you can do that.

We are going to cover all the gym leaders in Pokemon Sword And Shield, their Pokemon and tactics. We are also going to recommend the Pokemon that you should use against each gym leader.

Spikemuth Gym Leader Piers

In order to start the gym challenge you need to run to the right side of the Pokemon Center and a random character will ask you if you want to start the challenge. The challenge will have you run through the streets of Spikemuth and defeating Team Yell members that you encounter on your way. After you have beaten everyone you can take on Piers.

Piers Pokemon

The following are all the Pokemon that Piers uses in battle:

  • Level 44 Scrafty
  • Level 45 Malamar
  • Level 45 Skuntank
  • Level 46 Obstagoon

Piers cannot Gigantamax and you cannot Dynamax in the gym either. So keep that in mind when taking him on.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Piers

The following are examples of Pokemon that are great against Piers:

  • Caterpie
  • Milcrey

Rewards

Once you have defeated Piers, you will get TM85 which is Snarl. You will get the dark type uniform. You will also be able to catch Pokemon up to level 55.

Bring A Pokemon Who Can Handle At Least 3 Max Strikes

If your Pokemon’s levels are low coming in to the fight, put in a Pokemon who can withstand Alcremie’s Dynamax attacks. If one of your Pokemon can withstand 3 attacks from Alcremie’s Dynamax form, it will return to its normal form and become easier to handle for the rest of the battle.

Stock up on Revives and Super Potions

Opal’s Pokemon deal heavy damage, so have these items along as insurance to help make it through the fight.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Badges

All the Pokemon Sword and Shield badges eventually fit together to make a glorious coin-like structure, which you can view on the League Card section of the menu. Unfortunately you can’t shine it like you could in old games, but I would pay serious money to have one in real life.

Turn to page two for our guide to the Pokemon and trainers you’ll face in the semi-finals, finals and the Champion.

Raihan Leader Of The Hammerlocke Gym

Opal

Gigalith / Rock / Level 46

Duraludon / Steel and Dragon / Level 48

  • Breaking Swipe
  • Stone Edge
  • Iron Head

Raihan, the second strongest trainer in the Galar Region, is the eighth and final gym leader that trainers will need to face in order to enter the final tournament. While he is a Dragon specialist, half of his team aren’t actually Dragon-type Pokémon. Instead, he uses Pokémon that benefit from Gigalith’s ability which generates Sandstorm weather conditions. This battle is unique in that it is a Double Battle, so players will have to fight two Pokémon at once.

Players will need to have a fairly balanced lineup since there isn’t one type that can hit all of Raihan’s Pokémon for super-effective damage. Ground Pokémon are good against Gigalith and Duraludon, and Ice Pokémon will beat Flygon and Sandaconda quickly. Abomasnow is a great choice because its ability gets rid of Gigalith’s Sand Stream by creating Hail conditions when entering battle. Also, its Grass/Ice type allows it to do super-effective damage on three out of his four Pokémon.

After defeating Raihan, trainers will receive the Dragon Badge, Dragon Uniform, and TM99, which is Breaking Swipe. Players will also be able to catch Pokémon of any level and join the final tournament.

Pokémon Sword & Shield are available now for the Nintendo Switch.

Gordie Circhester Gym Leader

Hes the Rock-type master and a rock star of fashion! Gordie is over in Circhester for Pokémon Sword players, and his rock-solid defense is no joke. In his Circhester gym, Gordies challenge is particularly tricky: Youve got a pair of rods, a room full of pitfalls and several gym trainers to defeat. Once your controller starts vibrating, you just know a trap is near you so walk carefully and slowly to avoid them.

Or trigger all of them and just walk around them when you get warped back to the start of the room. With the pitfalls cleared, Gordie is ready to rock and roll: His team is naturally weak towards Grass, Steel, Water and Fighting-types, so players who chose anyone but Scorbunny have an advantage here. As Rock-type Pokémon though, Gordies critters still have an incredible defense that can withstand most one-hit knockouts, with Barbaracle being especially dangerous to everything but Grass-types once it starts powering up.

In addition to a fully evolved Grookey or Sobble, heavyweights such as Lotad, Seedot and Diglett from your gym challenges against Nessa and Kabu should help take some of the load off of your starter, but a powered up Water-type will be your safest option for when Gordie summons his Coalossal and Dynamaxes it. Provided that you can get through the rest of his team first that is:

  • Barbaracle Level 40 Water and Rock-type
  • Shuckle Level 40 Rock and Bug-type
  • Stonjourner Level 41 Rock-type
  • Coalossal Level 42 Rock and Fire-type

Turffield Gym Leader Milo

Milo will have you wrangle some Wooloo into pens. This is pretty easy and all you have to do is heard them in the right direction. Beware of the blocking obstacle as it will scatter the Wooloo in different directions.

Milos Pokemon

The following are the Pokemon that Milo uses:

  • Level 19 Gossifleur
  • Level 20 Eldegoss

Eldegoss will Gigantamax so save your Dynamax for it.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Milo

The following are the Pokemon that you can use to counter Milo:

  • Woobat

These are some examples. Any fire, flying or grass type will do just fine.

Rewards

Once you defeat Milo, you will get TM10 which is Magical Leaf. You also get a grass-type uniform to wear.

Hulbury Gym Leader Nessa

Nessa will have you press switched to turn off water pipes. The switches are colored Red, Yellow and Blue. Each switch turns off the same colored pipe. You will need to defeat a couple of trainers as well.

Nessas Pokemon

Nessa uses the following Pokemon:

  • Level 22 Goldeen
  • Level 23 Arrokuda
  • Level 24 Drednaw

Drednaw will Gigantamax so save Dynamax for that encounter.

Recommended Pokemon To Counter Nessa

Some of the Pokemon that are great to counter Nessa are as follows:

  • Wooper
  • Lotad
  • Seedot

If Wooper has water-absorb then most of Nessas moves will heal Wooper. Other than that, any grass type Pokemon is going to be great against Nessa.

Rewards

After you defeat Nessa, you will get TM36, which is Whirlpool. You will also get a water-type gym uniform. You will be able to catch level 30 Pokemon.

Nessa Hullbury Gym Leader

How To Beat Opal – Pokemon Sword And Shield Lets Play/ Walkthrough Part 22

The next stop on the road to being the best like no one ever was, just so happens to be in Hulbury. Home to Nessa, this Gym Leader is a master of Water-type Pokémon and she wont waste a chance to rain on your parade if you give her an opening. Nessas gym challenge is a simple task of turning a few valves and defeating her resident gym trainers, but youll need to pack some Grass, Flying or Electric-type firepower in your team if you want to claim victory.

If you chose Grookey and have already evolved it into Thwackey, you dont have much to worry about at this early stage in Pokémon Sword and Shield. If you need some type advantage muscle however, the hills have plenty of options for you to explore. Bounsweet can be found in many sections of the Wild Area, Shield players have exclusive access to wild Lotad on Route 2 while Sword players can grab a Seedot in the same area. Both Pokémon evolve into formidable anti Water-type forms, or alternatively you can be given a Toxel at the Pokémon Nursery on Route 05.

Get Toxel up to level 30, and youll have a mighty counter to all three of Nessas Pokémon, especially when she Dynamaxes her Drednaw in battle against you. Heres a breakdown of her team:

  • Goldeen Level 22 Water-type
  • Arrokuda Level 23 Water-type
  • Drednaw Level 24 Water and Rock-type

Opal Ballonlea Gym Leader

Pink! Ballonleas gym leader just loves seeing that colour on other people and she wont hesitate to repeat this fact several times. Pink also happens to be the primary colour of the Fairy-Type Pokémon, the pocket monsters that Opal specialises in. Over at her gym, the challenge ahead of you is a simple one: Battle three gym trainers in a row, and answer a question during every match. Get it right and youll earn a stat boost for the round. Get it wrong and prepare for a temporary downgrade.

Most of these questions are tricky to answer, so dont gravitate towards the obvious answer if you can. As a Fairy-type Gym Leader, Opals team is naturally strong against the likes of Fighting, Dragon and Dark-type Pokémon. They massively weak against Poison and Steel-types though, so make certain that your team has a few toxic and heavy metal options ready.

If you caught a Rookiedee earlier in the game, it should have evolved into Corviknight by now, a sturdy Flying and Steel-type Pokémon that can dish out big damage. The Toxel you picked up at the Route 5 Pokémon Day Care should have also learnt Poison Jab after it evolved into Toxtricity, or you can grab a few other Poison-type and Steel-type pocket monsters to pad out your team: Think Skorupi on Route 6, Meowths Galar region variant on Route 4 or a Koffing found in the Motostoke Outskirts. With your squad sorted, heres the team that Opal will send against you:

As you make your way through the main storyline in Pokemon Sword and/or Pokemon Shield, youll eventually come to the beautiful small town of Ballonlea, which is home to the fifth Gym in the Galar Gym Challenge.

If you answer a question correctly, your active Pokemon will receive a stat boost, but if you answer a question incorrectly, theyll get a stat debuff, so its important to answer each one correctly!

Thanks to the folks at Prima Games, we know the answers to the six questions youll be asked in the Fairy-themed Gym. Heres the breakdown of each question and its correct answer.

Milo Leader Of The Turffield Gym

Glossifeur / Grass / Level 19

  • Leafage
  • Round

The first gym leader in Pokémon Sword and Shield is Milo, a Grass-type specialist. The Grass-type Pokémon strike a solid balance because they’re weak to common types such as Fire and Flying but are strong against other common types like Water and Ground. Players who started with Scorbunny shouldn’t have any problem with this gym because by level 20, Scorbunny should have evolved into a Raboot with Fire-type moves, such as Ember or Flame Charge.

Fortunately for those who didn’t choose Scorbunny, there are some strong options readily available at this point in the game. Players can get Vulpix, the Fire-type Pokémon that evolves into Ninetales, on Route 3 or in the Wild Area. Or Rookidee, the Flying-type that evolves into the incredibly powerful Corviknight, on the first three routes or in the Wild Area as well. This gym should be fairly easy since Milo’s Pokémon aren’t particularly powerful or bulky.

After defeating Milo, players will be able to catch Pokémon up to level 25 and receive the Grass Badge, Grass Uniform, and TM10, which is Magical Leaf.

Piers Spikemuth Gym Leader

Youve finally made it to Spikemuth! The penultimate gym challenge awaits you, provided that you have what it takes to overpower Piers and his rock band of Dark-type Pokémon. After youve cleared a simple gym challenge that involves you taking on a quartet of Team Yell members, Piers will be ready to face you.

Theres no Dynamax element present in the Spikemuth Gym, but Piers is far from a pushover if you go into this match unprepared. For this gym, your best bet is to field a team that includes a mix of Fairy, Fighting and Bug-type Pokémon. At this point, you should have grabbed an Impidimp in the forest before reaching the town of Ballonlea, as the dual Dark and Fairy-type nature of that Pokémon once it evolves into Grimmsnarl makes it a real powerhouse. Heres a breakdown of the team that Piers sends into battle:

  • Scrafty Level 44 Dark and Fighting type
  • Malamar Level 45 Dark and Psychic type
  • Skuntank Level 45 Dark and Poison type
  • Obstagoon Level 46 Dark and Normal type

With Piers silenced, youll be awarded with the Dark Badge, the ability to catch Pokémon of up to level 55, the Dark Uniform and TM85 Snarl. All thats left now, is to take on Raihan and claim the final badge in the Gym Challenger quest.
