New Japan Pokemon Set

Crafted For An International Audience

Opening NEW Japanese Pokemon GO Special Set Mewtwo Box and Card File Box! Worth it?

Japanese consumer culture is familiar with and accepting of smaller , consistent releases with chase cards that push sales. In general, this kind of Gacha sale style is less approved of if not outright regulated in international markets. It is then no surprise that TPCI focuses on releasing more traditional sets that more readily meet international needs, though it does make some Japanese releases particularly interesting collectors pieces! In particular, unique promos are a serious consideration for interested collectors, such as the special Japanese Post promotional Pikachu!

Nintendos Splatoon 3 Just Set Japans All

Splatoon 3

Nintendo

While it was always clear that Splatoon 3 would be a hit on Nintendo Switch, Im not sure anyone expected performance quite like this. Splatoon 3 isnt just starting out strong in its home country of Japan, it has broken every launch window record across all platforms. Not just for the Switch, for everything.

Nintendo is reporting that 3.45 million copies of Splatoon 3 were sold in its first three days of release. Thats more than the previous record holder for Switch, Animal Crossing New Horizons, and also more than Pokemon Black and White, which was the previous fastest-selling game ever in Japan.

Exactly by how much did it break those records? Its a little hard to get precise with past figures, but New Horizons sold 1.88 million retail copies its first three days, which doesnt include downloads, though Nintendo downloads arent as high as other platforms. Pokemon Black and White sold 2.63 million copies its entire first week. So yes, it seems Splatoon 3 is leading by a good amount.

This is surprising a lot of people because I mean itsSplatoon? Which dont get me wrong, is a fun series, but its such a new IP relative to Nintendos other megahit franchises, and yet its setting records like this? It seems the rest of the world may be underestimating just how big a hit the game is in Japan itself.

Pokemon Scarlet And Violet Drops Another Tease About Strange New Pokemon

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet continues to tease the existence of an engine-like Pokemon. Yesterday, The Pokemon Company revealed new information about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the upcoming Pokemon games set in the Paldea region. The trailera showdown against Team Star revealed the three main storylines of the game, which include a showdown against Team Star, a group of school delinquents. Interestingly, battling Team Star will involve fighting waves of trainers and Pokemon before a final battle against a Team Star Boss and their Starmobile. The Starmobile actually factors into combat, with players having to defeat the Starmobile during the battle.

The Pokemon Company revealed new information about Pokemon Scarlet and VioletWhile it might seem strange for a Pokemon to battle a large car, a piece of key art released alongside the trailer gave a big clue why the Starmobile might be able to attack you. The artwork depicts the game’s protagonists as they are confronted by a number of Team Star goons, with a Starmobile looming behind them. Interestingly, the Starmobile has a noticeable eye and a tongue coming out of its engine.

The new trailer also revealed the new Pokemon Klawf, a Rock-type crab Pokemon, and Amarouge and Ceruledge, a pair of humanoid armor-wearing Pokemon. The latter two Pokemon are exclusive to either Pokemon Scarlet or Pokemon Violet, and we wouldn’t be surprised if they have some sort of tie to the main plotline of the story.

A Dripfeed Of Releases

Outside of all the above mentioned variations between English Pokemon cards and Japanese cards, the biggest difference is how the cards are released. In Japan, Pokemon cards are released in a steady drip of small releases- these include smaller full sets, new starter decks with unique cards, micro sets, Pokemon Center promos, and Pokemon Gym promos. The Pokemon Company International , who is responsible for English Pokemon TCG releases, takes a combination of these releases to make up their full sets. For example, the English set called Pokemon Sun & Moon: Cosmic Eclipse, was made up of Pokemon Sun & Moon: Remix Bout and Pokemon Sun & Moon: Alter Genesis in Japan.

Why Does Japan Get Different Pokemon Tcg Sets And Cards

Starter Set Inteleon Gengar Vmax Double Box Pokémon

Whether youre a veteran Pokemon TCG collector or new to the scene, if youve seen Japanese cards youre bound to notice a distinct difference between their cards and ours. The set names are different, the card backs vary from ours, packs contain only five cards, youre not guaranteed a rare in a Japanese pack, and the cards themselves can vary slightly based on international censorship and other considerations.

New Japanese Pokmon Tcg Set Rebellious Clash Revealed

The third set is revealed.

Japans next big Pokémon TCG Expansion, Rebellious Clash, has been revealed and follows the release of VMAX Rising a few weeks ago.

Its the third set in the Pokémon Sword and Shield collection and features a bunch of new Pokémon cards, including Toxtricity VMAX and Dragapult VMAX, which are sure to take competitive by storm when they come out in the West.

The new expansion set seemingly focuses more on Psychic and Electric-type Pokémon this time around. Japan is also getting a few new starter set decks featuring the first Grimmsnarl and Charizard VMAX cards.

Serebii has already put together a list of all the known collectible cards so far, which is set to release on March 6. Players in the West, however, wont see any of these cards for a long time.

Like most Western releases, new sets in the U.S. and Europe are usually a mix of cards from multiple releases throughout the Japanese calendar, so that expansion set could be a mix of VMAX Rising and Rebellious Clash.

Upcoming Japanese Sets To Feature Alolan Vulpix Vstar Lugia And Shiny Charizard Vstar

Weve received insider information about upcoming Japanese releases!

We now have confirmation Incandescent Arcana will release in Japan on September 2nd. The sell sheet shows the set will feature Alolan Vulpix VSTAR yes, you read that right. Though not confirmed yet, the sell sheet seems to imply Alolan Vulpix VSTAR will get a Character Rare with Lillie. During the Sun & Moon anime, Lillie and her Alolan Vulpix were a popular pair. This carried over to other parts of the franchise too.

Lately the TCG has been giving unevolved Pokemon more attention, such as making Character Rares of Hoothoot and Rockruff. Pikachu and Eevee were both Pokemon VMAX, so Alolan Vulpix getting similar treatment isnt completely unprecedented.

Weve learned today that Paradigm Trigger will release in Japan on October 21st. The set will feature Lugia, Regidrago, and Regieleki. The two Regi havent received their Pokemon V yet, so we could see them here. We know nothing else about the set at this time.

November 4th will see the release of a Special Battle Set Charizard VSTAR vs Rayquaza VMAX. The two Pokemon will be shiny. Its likely theyll be alternate art reprints of the existing Charizard VSTAR and Rayquaza VMAX.

A Jumbo Card Collection will release on December 16th featuring Lapras, Mew, and Latias.

As usual, all of this information is preliminary and subject to change.

List Of Pokmon Trading Card Game Sets

Learn how and when to remove this template message)

This is a list of Pokémon Trading Card Game sets which is a collectible card game first released in Japan in 1996. As of April 2022, there are 98 card sets released in America and 91 in Japan, including special sets. As of September 2017, Collectively, there are 6,959 cards in the Japanese sets and 9,110 cards in the English sets. The large difference stems from non-holofoil duplicates of rare cards included in English sets that are not printed in Japanese sets. As of March 2017, 23.6 billion cards had been shipped worldwide.

The sets are generally broken into two lists: one for the first line of Wizards of the Coast cards and the second after Nintendo‘s acquisition of the card game after Wizards.

The Pokemon Company Unveils Incandescent Arcana Tcg Set

In terms of artwork, the stars of the set are the trainer and Pokemon cards mentioned above, with beautifully illustrated on each card.

Other noteworthy cards include Radiant Jirachi, Delphox, and an Espurr card featuring the tiny psychic cat recreated as a crochet doll.

Additionally, this set features two Alolan Vulpix cards Alolan Vulpix V and Alolan Vulpix VSTAR, expanding the ever-growing number of VSTAR Pokemon in the TCG.

The Incandescent Arcana set also features another Zarude card as well as a Reshiram V to go along with Alolan Vulpix V.

In terms of full evolution lines, this new set features the Fenekin line, the Ralts line, the Espurr line, and the Klink line.

Finally, the set features a Trainer card in the form of the Switch card as well as the Judge and Serena Supporter cards.

The Complete Set List For Incandescent Arcana

Here is every card that has been revealed to be featured in Pokémons Incandescent Arcana set:

  • Fennekin: Common
  • Serena : Uncommon
  • V Guard Energy : Uncommon

Incandescent Arcana features the new and powerful VSTAR mechanic for Pokémon. This set is breaking tradition by putting a focal point on the Pokémon, Alolan-form Vulpix, the first unevolved Pokémon who is featured with the V and VSTAR mechanics. Pokémon with the V mechanic have stronger attacks and more hit points than Pokémon without the mechanic. The V STAR mechanic happens to the evolved versions of Pokémon V cards. V STAR Pokémon also have stronger attacks and more hit points, but they have a V STAR Power which is either a powered-up ability or attack. The Incandescent Arcana set will also feature at least one card with the Radiant mechanic introduced in Astral Radiance, where a Shiny Pokémon has special abilities or powers.

Every Pokémon TCG for Sword and Shield has had its ups and down, from too much demand causing a supply shortage to the huge restock of many sets over the past few months. As the fourth sub-set of the year, Incandescent Arcana is attempting to blend multiple mechanics from the Sword and Shield TCG era, probably to help signify the end of Gen 8 and the beginning of Gen 9.

Japanese Pokemon Prices Are Better Than English

Now going a little further from a value perspective, Japanese prices are generally better than English.

While this isnt true 100 percent of the time, the exception is not the rule. Usually, Japanese product is cheaper. It isnt out of the ordinary to see Japanese booster boxes at around $50 for newer sets. For individual cards, you will almost always be better off buying the Japanese versions.

To further Japans case, Japanese cards typically have better print quality. Yes, the print quality of English cards has improved from the vintage days when it seemed like it was almost impossible to pull a PSA 10-quality holo out of a Wizards of the Coast booster pack. But there are unquestionably still some quality control issues.

Barring centering issues , it is very easy to send a fresh, mint Japanese card off to PSA and nab a 10. I will say that poor centering was definitely more of a problem in older Japanese sets, but that changed for the better probably around the time of Diamond & Pearl .

Look: I get it. You are used to English, and you cant imagine yourself committing to Japanese cards. I used to think the same way when I first got back into the hobby at the beginning of 2017. But as time passed, I became more and more amenable to Japanese cards, and now, I would say that 90 percent of what I buy is Japanese.

You are obviously free to do what you want, but Im telling you: the best deals in the Pokemon card market are currently in Japan, and its hard to see that changing.

More Special Rares To Come With Incandescent Arcana

Incandescent Arcana is also set to include some of its own Secret Rares. The Pokémon cards to be featured as Secret Rares have been revealed, thus far, as follows:

Secret Rares are special editions to different Pokémon TCG sets. These cards often feature something incredibly unique, such as a rainbow color scheme or a gold border around the card. When considering the pros and cons of getting Pokémon cards graded, Secret Rares are among the most important to consider, as their pull rates are incredibly lower than that of traditional rares. Though there is still a chance these Secret Rares might also comprise some of the Secret Rares in the upcoming Lost Origins TCG release, there is still a very slim chance that the original Japanese set, Incandescent Arcana, will see a reprint of these secret rares. In addition to the Secret Rares, Incandescent Arcana is full of unique holos, mirrorfoils, and full art cards, making it an exciting set for Pokémon collectors outside of Japan to try to get their hands on.

Containing roughly 68 cards, the Sword and Shield subset booster, Incandescent Arcana will be available in Japan on September second, several days before the U.S. release of the Lost Origins TCG. Incandescent Arcana will feature many of the beloved aspects and mechanics that have been introduced to the Gen 8 Pokémon Trading Card Game.

The Japanese Pokemon Market Is Stronger

The English side of things is incredibly saturated. Pokemon card aficionado Scott Pratte says , saturation is the death of hobbies.

This is something we have seen time and time again in America. A new Pokemon card set does well and actually increases in price. But then, out of nowhere, it gets a massive reprint, and the price tanks. Those who are relatively experienced will probably remember how this happened with Ultra Prism a few years back. Booster boxes were actually in the neighborhood of $400-500. Then it saw a rather significant reprint and the price plummeted all the way down to $80 a box.

That isnt something that occurs in Japan. Yes, Japan does do reprints. However, they typically only do one or two very small reprints to meet demand. Thats it. Because the reprints are so small and infrequent, prices dont move much. That makes it much easier for both collectors and investors. Anyone following some of the recent popular Japanese sets has already seen this principle in action.

As a result, the Japanese market is less prone to wild fluctuations. We have already discussed the 2020 boom, but that mainly applied to English. Yes, the Japanese side was affected, because rising tides do lift all boats. But instead of peaks and valleys, Japanese product saw a rather steady increase. Was it expedited? Sure, but still not even remotely close to the berserk uptick that occurred among English cards.
