What Country Is The Gen 9 Region Based On

Creating a NEW Pokémon Region Based on Canada! New Pokémon, Gym Leaders, and More!

Here’s where Pokemon Gen 9 is happening in real life

By Iyane Agossah

Nintendo, The Pokemon Company and Game Freak made a surprise announcement for Pokemon Day and the 26th anniversary of the series on February 27, and announced Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Gen 9 coming to Nintendo Switch, here is which country it is based on and the hints that reveal this detail.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet was announced on the Pokemon Day showcase with a reveal trailer that initially featured live-action segments, so many fans watching the Pokemon Day stream initially thought it was a new Detective Pikachu project. However, Gen 9 is real as the trailer moved on to show gameplay footage of a brand new region.

DUALSHOCKERS VIDEO OF THE DAY

Furthermore, the trailer had many hints revealing which real country is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet based on, and we detailed some of these hints below.

Galar Houses The First

For years, Dark was the only type not to have a gym leader. Instead, players usually found Dark-type specialists in the Elite Four, like Karen of Johto, Sydney of Hoenn, and Grimsley of Unova. Nanu is a Dark-type Island Kahuna in Alola, but that doesn’t make him a Gym Leader.

Galar is the first region to introduce a Dark-type Gym Leader, Piers. The quiet and lethargic rock star retires during the game’s events, leaving the title to his younger sister, Marnie. In one fell swoop, Galar introduced not one but two Dark-type Gym Leaders, ending one of the franchise’s biggest longest traditions.

Galar Is Based On The Uk

Every region in the Pokémon world draws inspiration from a real-life place. Kanto is based on the real Kanto region in Japan, while Sinnoh borrows heavily from Hokkaido. Galar continues with the series’ exploration of the Old Continent, basing itself on the United Kingdom.

Galar wears its inspiration on its sleeve by including glaring references to the London Eye, Stonehedge, and Big Ben, among others. The Isle of Armor is Pokémon‘s equivalent to the Isle of Man, while Scotland serves as the inspiration for the Crown Tundra.

Kalos Is Within Swimming Distance Of Galar

On the flip side of the Kanto situation, Galar is supposedly within swimming distance of Kalos. Pokémon fans know Kalos draws inspiration from France, a country famously close to the UK. Indeed, some trains from London to Paris only take a little over an hour.

Within the Pokémon universe, anyone could board a Water-type Pokémon and get to Kalos from Galar rather quickly. This detail is an exaggeration because a boat from the UK to France would take at least five hours, but it’s not like Pokémon is trying to be accurate with real-life distances.

Pokemon Sword And Shield

Is Pokémon Sword and Shields Galar region based on the UK?

The Galar region inPokemon Sword and Shield is the second region to be based on locations in Europe, as it is largely inspired by the United Kingdom. While the core game is primarily based on England and Wales, the Crown Tundra DLC pulls on Scotland for inspiration, meanwhile the Isle of Man is what inspires the Isle of Armor expansion. Generation 8, like Gen 7 before it, also adds regional variants into the Pokemon franchise.

Generation Vi: European Influences Are Introduced To The Franchise With The France

While Gen V and Unova took the franchise to the United States of America, Gen VI and Kalos brought Pokémon to Europe with strong French influences all over. Lumiose City is viewed as the capital-of-sorts for Kalos, thus drawing strong comparisons with Paris, from Prism Tower and the Eiffel Tower, to the Lumiose Museum and the Louvre, with even the Pokémon League looking like the Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Other places take aspects of additional French towns and cities, from Lille and Strasbourg to places within Brittany and Normandy. Still, the Kalos region also has locations that take inspiration from the English Channel and Alderney of the Channel Islands, in Azure Bay and Sea Spirit’s Den respectively.

People also ask, what are all the Pokemon regions based on?

The first four regions are based on smaller regions in Japan, Unova, and Alola are based on parts of the United States, Kalos is based on France, and Galar is based on the United Kingdom.

Beside above, what is the biggest Pokemon region? Sinnoh

Eight regions have appeared in the core series of games. They are, in order of appearance, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and Galar. Each region has been the setting of at least two games in the generation in which it debuts. Most regions are structured similarly.

Despite being on the air for more than two decades, Ash hasn’t really aged since the start of the series â he’s been 10 years old since 1997.

What Makes A Pokmon A Regional

As Niantic has released more Pokémon into the world for us to search for, some Pokémon have been harder to find due to being in specific areas of the globe, requiring dedicated trainers to travel to obtain these otherwise elusive Pokémon.

With the COVID-19 global pandemic taking over the world in 2020, travelling to other parts of the globe is often frowned upon. Naturally, meeting your fellow trainers from other countries has also turned into a challenge per se and as such, getting regional Pokémon is just not as easy as it was.

That being said, Niantic has announced the arrival of Gen 6 Pokémon into the game starting December 2, 2020.

The announcement of a new generation of Pokémon naturally brings in new regionals to the forefront. With the positivity and hopes that the Kalos region is about to bring to Pokémon Go, let us carry the same hope in being able to catch the latest regional Pokémon ASAP!

With that being said, lets find out about the regional Pokémon in the game!

Galar Is The Fifth Most Populated Region

Let’s Design a Pokémon Region Based on California! – Orova Region

Every fan knows that the Pokémon world is surprisingly low in population. The towns in the games are small in scale, most of them having fewer than 100 inhabitants. The early towns usually have fewer than 30.

Galar fits these criteria, having a population of 727. This number makes Galar the fifth most populated region in the Pokémon world, outranked by Sinnoh with 755 inhabitants, Unova with 949, Alola with 1005, and Kalos with 1288. The three regions that Galar outranks have less than 500 inhabitants, with Kanto having fewer than 400.

Generation Ii: Johto Brings The Culture & History Of The Kansai Region

The Gen II Pokémon games feature both Johto and the original region of Kanto and situate them in a similar manner to their real-world equivalents. Johto’s inspiration is the Kansai region which, like in the games, is to the west of Kanto. The Kansai region includes the likes of Osaka, Kyoto, and Wakayama, among others.

Johto’s real-world influences make a lot of sense, too, with Mt. Silver being considered as colossal and towering as Mount Fuji, Goldenrod City being as lively as Osaka, and Ecruteak having the culture and history of Kyoto.

Pokemon Regions And The Real World Locations They’re Based On

  • Alola – USA
  • Galar – United Kingdom

All other Pokemon generations have been based on different regions of Japan. There have been nine Pokemon generations so far and all have stuck with either the USA, Europe, or Japan, and so there are huge swaths of the world that have yet to be featured in the main series Pokemon games. Some pointed out by Reddit user Fluffy_Mood5781 include Africa, Australia, and South America.

Since the Pokemon franchise remains incredibly popular to this day, there’s a chance that regions representing these neglected areas of the world will be introduced at some point down the line. After all, Nintendo and Game Freak will run out of European countries eventually. In the meantime, some Pokemon fans have been taking it upon themselves to come up with their own regions based on the unused countries, with one artist showing off what Pokemon in an Indian region might look like.

Fans may be waiting a long time for regions based on other parts of the world, but in the meantime, they can look forward to checking out what Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have to offer when they release for the Nintendo Switch later this year.

Hints Pointing Out That Gen 9 Is Based On Spain Found Out By Fans

The Pokemon Regions Challenge

You can find several Spanish cultural symbols in the reveal trailer as pointed out by the Spanish Pokemon community of Centro Pokemon:

Centro Pokémon

The trailer also partially shows a map of the region of Pokemon Violet and Scarlet found in the protagonists house. If you take a look at that map, it looks strikingly similar to the shape of Spain.

The main town shown in the trailer also looks very similar to Gaudi art, and the giant building shown in the trailer was definitely inspired by the Sagrada Familia.

You can spot many more hints for the Gen 9 region in the gameplay part of the trailer, which we included further below.

Gaudi is pretty much the most beloved Spanish icon in Japan, and his works are often referenced in Japanese media. Id personally like to cite Takehiko Inoue, the creator ofSlam Dunk, who is a huge Gaudi fan and even made a history book based on the artist.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be released in late 2022 on Nintendo Switch. What are your thoughts on the fact that were getting our first Pokemon Spain game after Japan, France, USA, and UK-inspired regions? Let us know in the comments section below!

Origins Of Pokmon Regions: Unova Region

The first four generations of Pokémon had settings based on Japanese prefectures. For the fifth, Game Freak chose to do something different. Pokémon Black & White are set in the Unova region, based on New York City and the surrounding area. These games may have featured the most ambitious narratives in Pokémon to date. In this article, we will be exploring the geographical, historical, and cultural inspiration behind Unova. The information in this article is drawn primarily from Bulbapedia.

This isnt the first region based on an American location. The Orre region from Pokémon Colosseum was based on Phoenix, Arizona, which we will cover another time. Unovas Japanese name is Isshu, which can mean one variety. Although Unova is diverse in its people and Pokémon, it is unified by their relationships with one another. The English name shares the trend, likely coming from the Latin word unum which means one. It could also be an abbreviation of the United States of America.

Unova is a celebration of American diversity and culture. Pokémon Black & White were the first games to introduce black characters into the series, such as Iris, Lenora, and Alder. Many of the new Pokémon are nods to American and New York stereotypes. For example, you have street punks , construction workers , New York pigeons , and even references to the MTA . Braviary and Bouffalant are based on the bald eagle and buffalo, both recognised symbols of America.

What Are The Pokmon Regions

Ranking All 8 Core Pokemon Regions!

To date there are eight main Pokémon regions, one for each generation of Pokémon. The regions feature in the Pokémon anime and also in the video games.

Each of the Pokémon regions is made up of a number of different areas, towns and cities. These in turn contain shops, Pokémon Centers, gyms and other buildings and features that can be explored. In the games, there are generally challenges that need to be completed and gym leaders to be defeated in order to progress to the next level.

In addition to the eight main Pokémon regions there are some additional regions that have featured in the anime or spin-off games.

Pokmon Battles Are Galar’s Version Of Football

Nearly everyone knows that the UK loves football. The sport is almost a religion in the country, with their team producing some of the most famous players in the world, including David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, and Harry Kane.

Pokémon translates the UK’s passion for football as Galar’s love for Pokémon battles. Indeed, Galar has some of the best gym challenges in Pokémon, and battles occur in massive stadiums with a crowd of chanting fans cheering. This setting provides a considerable shift from the usually discrete Pokémon battles of previous games, giving Galar an edge to stand out above the other regions.

Pokmon: 10 Things Only Die

The Galar region is the setting for the Generation VIII games, a regal and sprawling land full of secrets that only die-hard Pokémon fans know about.

Generation VIII premiered two-and-a-half years ago, introducing fans of Pokémon to the new region of Galar. Regal and sprawling, Galar is one of the most stunning regions in the Pokémon world, mainly thanks to the Nintendo Switch visuals. Like other settings in previous Pokémon games, Galar is home to numerous cities and towns that draw inspiration from real-world places.

Pokemon Black And White

Unova is the core series’ first break away from regions in Japan. Based on New York Citys metro area, it encompasses a solid amount of space. The region includes geographical inspirations from New York state, Manhattan, as well as New Jersey. Unova has been able to retain a lot of fan admiration over the years due to its uniqueness and mechanics like seasons in Pokemon Black and White.

Features like this could affect gameplay and make playthroughs feel different every time. While each region has its own interpretation of time, as well as weather, Black and White remain the only games to have dedicated seasons. The return of this feature would be great to see in future games, and is something Pokemon Legends: Arceus could make use of.
