Pokemon Go: Every Type’s Weakness

TOP PALKIA COUNTERS + RAID GUIDE TO BEAT THE WATER DRAGON LEGENDARY | Pokemon Go

Pokemon GO shares the rock-paper-scissors nature of the mainline series when it comes to combat, but it can be tricky to remember all of the elemental type advantages with so many types in play at once.

Niantic has fortunately provided a helpful article on its official Pokemon GO site to remind its players what weaknesses and resistances are out there. Since the game’s inclusion of Fairy-type Pokemon and moves, Pokemon GO is now up-to-date with its type effectiveness alongside the current titles in the franchise such as Pokemon Sword & Shield.

Super-effective damage is vital to trainers’ combat capabilities, as taking advantage of type weaknesses is a core concept in Pokemon GO.

Pokmon Go Type Chart Explained

  • 1

Since the very beginning the Pokémon series has depended on a delicate Rock-Paper-Scissors-style balance to its Pokémon battles. Type effectiveness is a key part of building an effective team in Pokémon GO or Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, or Pokémon Sword and Shield or any of the other Pokémon games. Once you know the basic strengths and weaknesses of the different types, you’ll easily triumph against any Pokémon type you come across in battle.

Every Pokémon belongs to at least one Type and will be strong or weak against other types. Some are pretty obvious – it’s no surprise that Water-type Pokémon will be strong against Fire types, but new players coming to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl may have trouble committing the strengths and weaknesses of the 18 main types to memory. Therefore, we’ve produced the following Pokémon type chart to help you quickly suss out what’s what when it comes to Pokémon battles.

In this guide, well help you understand how Pokémon types relate to each other, how the mobile game calculates attack strength and key ways in which this differs from the console game series.

Combination Weaknesses & Strengths

Sometimes when Pokémon have secondary types, the Weaknesses & Strengths of that type might negate, amplify, or add to the Weaknesses & Strengths of the Pokémons primary type. In this list, were going to cover specifically the sub-types that change the original Weaknesses & Strengths.

  • Amplifying
  • Amplifies Weakness to Electric: Flying
  • Amplifies Weakness to Grass: Ground, Rock
  • Negating
  • Negates Weakness to Electric: Grass, Electric, Dragon, Ground
  • Negates Weakness to Grass: Grass, Fire, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon, Steel
  • Negates Resistance to Fire: Grass, Ice, Bug, Steel
  • Negates Resistance to Ice: Grass, Ground, Ice, Dragon
  • Negates Resistance to Steel: Ice, Rock, Steel
  • Negates Resistance to Water: Fire, Ground, Rock

    Locating Team Go Rocket Leaders

Every once in a while in Pokémon Go, you’ll have the chance to battle Team Go Rocket Grunts, and whenever you defeat one, they will drop an item called the Mysterious Component. If you manage to collect six of these, you’ll be able to combine them and craft a Rocket Radar.

This handy item reveals the location of any Leader Hideouts that are in close proximity to you. Once you’ve equipped your Rocket Radar, tap the Rocket Radar button to view the Leader Hideout locations.

As shown in one of the screenshots above, the Leader Hideouts resemble regular PokéStops on the map. And once you’re nearby, one of the Team Go Rocket Leaders will be standing right by the Leader Hideout.

Before you fight, keep in mind that Leaders are a lot tougher to beat than regular Team Go Rocket Grunts, so make sure that you line up your best Pokémon and that they’re at full health before the fight.

Once you’ve defeated a Leader, your Rocket Radar will disappear, so you will need to either purchase a new one from the Shop or locate and combine six more Mysterious Components in order to battle more Leaders.

What To Look For In A Pokmon

There are a few things to take into consideration when looking at a Pokémon for your team. First, what you want it to do: Do you need a tank to take a lot of hits and survive? A glass cannon to deal a ton of damage before it goes down? A specific role to counter one particular Pokémon youre worried about? There are many strategies that you can use, but there are four main things you will want to consider:

  • Typing. As we covered above, the kind of damage you are likely to take should be part of your decision. If everything on your team is weak to fighting-type moves in a cup that allows them, you will want to consider some team members that resist fighting moves to balance things out.
  • Moveset. Some moves are better for PVP than others. Community Day moves are very powerful and make the Pokémon that can use it much stronger than a similar Pokémon without. You should also consider the relationship between the fast and charge moves. Some fast moves hit HARD, like Charm, Razor Leaf and Confusion, but all that power comes at the expense of filling your charge moves slowly. You may want to choose to balance out team members that can hit hard with fast moves, and fast-charging but weaker moves that allow you to use charge moves far more frequently.
  • Metang Weakness Pokmon Go

Metang is the result of two Beldum that have become stuck together through their own magnetic forces. With two brains, Metang has doubled its psychic powers.

    The main weaknesses:

    • Dark
    • Ground

As Metang is a Steel/ Psychic Pokemon, it is weak to Dark, Fire, Ghost, and Ground Pokemon, however it is resistant to Dragon, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Steel attacks.

Pokmon Go Types Strengths And Weakness

Pokémon also has its own set of weaknesses and strengths. For example, bug-type Pokémon are weak against fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves. Bug-type moves are strong against dark-, grass-, and psychic-type moves. Fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves will do double damage against a bug-type, like Caterpie.

Some Pokémon have two types, which means they can have a doubled weakness or have their strength and weaknesses cancel out to just take normal damage. Rayquaza, a dragon- and flying-type, takes four times the damage from ice-type moves. On the flip side, Shuckle, a rock- and bug-type, takes normal damage from fire-type moves, since rock-type is strong against fire-type.

Strengths and weaknesses also arent necessarily just opposites of each other. Though fire-type move deal less damage to water-type Pokémon and water-type moves do doubled damage against fire-type Pokémon, this isnt the case with every type. For example, fighting-type moves are strong against normal-types, but normal-types just do regular damage against fighting-types, rather than do reduced damage.

Knowing what Pokémons strengths and weaknesses are is an important aspect of raiding and battling. To do the most damage you can, you should make sure that your Pokémons moves are strong against what its battling.

Beat Arlo Cliff Sierra in Pokemon GO Only With Water and Ice Type Teams

Lugia is capable of dealing Psychic, Flying, Dragon, and Water damage. It takes super effective damage from Rock, Ghost, Electric, Ice, and Dark attacks. It’s greatest strength, however, is its defense. Lugia is bulky and can take a lot of damage, so you’re going to want to focus on heavy hitters to beat the clock. Mega Evolution is definitely going to be your friend here, especially if you can coordinate with the rest of your Raid party.

Pokemon Go Type Chart: Strength Weakness And Effectiveness For All Types

Pokemon Types are the core of battles in Pokemon Go just as in the rest of the series – and to succeed, you’ll need to understand Pokemon type strengths, weaknesses and effectiveness.

As hardcore Pokemon fans will already know quite well, each Pokemon has one or two types, and types determine much about how that Pokemon battles. For the Pokemon Trainer, type is important because certain types are strong against others, meaning you can deal or take additional damage, or on the other hand lessen the amount of damage received.

There’s 18 different types, and each type is either strong, weak or neutral versus other types. At the most basic level with the starter Pokemon this breaks down to Rock, Paper, Scissors – Charmander beats Bulbasaur who beats Squirtle which comes full circle by beating Fire.

That all makes sense and is nice and easy – though things get more complicated when you start introducing more obtuse Pokemon Types types like Fairy or Dragon, or when you consider Pokemon with multiple types. Then you have to consider that moves have types – so a fire-type Pokemon like Charizard can easily come stacked with Dragon and Flying-type moves, meaning its damage output on the type chart is attached to those types rather than its raw type.

    Pokemon Go Type Effectiveness Multiplier

Just how effective a Pokemons move is actually depends entirely on the game itself. Type advantages in Pokemon Sword and Shield are generally more pronounced, with effective attacks being twice as strong.

One part of mastering the art of Trainer Battles is understanding how the types of your Pokémons moves affect the Pokémon youre battling. Heres a chart that shows which types are super effective vs. which Pokémon. Good luck and #GOBattle! ?

    Pokémon GO

Pokemon Go has a smaller multiplier when it comes to typings. However, this does not discount how important the selection of your Pokemon is before a battle. You can gain a massive advantage if youre aware of the weaknesses and strengths of certain types.

    How This List Is Calculated

The Pokemon on this page are listed by type in descending order of power. The metric used to decide their placement is DPS^3*TDO. This metric puts a heavy emphasis on DPS, but also takes into consideration TDO in order to attempt to discover the strongest overall performance of a given Pokemon when compared to others. Because of the way that this metric works, the Pokemon here are not always ordered according to which has the highest DPS. It’s entirely possible that the highest DPS option may show up 2nd or 3rd within a type if its bulk is low enough. It’s also possible that Pokemon not listed on this page could potentially find niche utility in future raids, but rest assured that the Pokemon near the top of these lists are exemplary candidates for their given types.

If you’d like to see how these Pokemon rank yourself, we recommend that you take a look at the DPS/TDO Spreadsheet, which is what we’ve used to make these calculations.

Pokmon Go Type Chart: How To Remember Pokmon Types

For anyone who has invested years of play into this series, the type system becomes second nature. While in time your memory too will retain most of, if not the full set of relationships it is worth learning the logical relationships that do exist.

The classic example taught at the beginning of every Pokémon game is that fire is super effective against grass, which is in turn super effective against water, which is in turn super effective against fire. This is easy enough to follow fire burns grass, grass thrives with water, water puts out fire but finding similar relationships in the other 18 types is will help you remember the system.

Here are some other ideas to get you started:

    • Rocks effectiveness against flying is reminiscent of the phrase kill two birds with one stone
    • Similarly, psychic is effective against fighting because brains are better than brawn but psychic is vulnerable to dark and ghost because the mind cannot cope with the unknown and supernatural
    • Ground types are immune to electric attacks because being grounded is an important principle in electric circuits but ground can be swept away be water, cracked by ice and exploited by grass.

    • Poison-type moves made neutral against Bug
    • Ice types made not very effective against Fire

    Pokemon Go: Type Effectiveness Chart

Some type weaknesses in Pokemon GO are fairly easy to remember, such as the core weaknesses of Fire, Water, and Grass-types. Fire beats Grass, Grass beats Water, Water beats fire.

However, it become complex when it comes to less straightforward types like Dragon, Ghost, Fairy, Poison or Dark-types. Thanks to Niantic’s chart, as well as several produced by the Pokemon community on sites like Bulbapedia, these type advantages and disadvantages can be easily referred back to.

Breaking down this chart, the X-axis represents defending from a given move, while the Y-axis represents attacking with a particular move type. Green circles indicate super-effective damage, red triangles indicate resistance to damage, and empty spaces indicate standard damage. Lastly, the black X in some places on the grid indicate immunity to damage from that particular move type.

In written form, the type weaknesses break down as such :

It will likely take plenty of referencing and practice to keep many type advantages in mind, but fortunately for Pokemon GO trainers these resources are readily available.
