Pokemon Legends: Arceus Review

Fighting games have hit their stride in the past few years, and yet, with a name like The King of Fighters, one would think it would be the cream of the crop. The King of Fighters XV was a great return to form for this long-running franchise and yet, it did not receive as much attention from mainstream audiences. Maybe theres still time for The King of Fighters XV to shine someday.

We Compiled The Scores Of The Main Media Focused On Video Game Analysis To Know How Was The Most Recent Pokmon Adventure To Arrive On Nintendo Switch

The first reviews of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet for Nintendo Switch almost unanimously suggest that it is a production of remarkable quality, although far from the best rated games in the series. GameFreak’s production takes up the open-world concept of Pokémon Legends Arceus and expands it with new features, as it could not be otherwise.

As it is almost a tradition in Meristation, we compiled the notes of the reviews from around the world and the average on Metacritic . In our text we highlight how “Pokémon Scarlet & Violet proposes a big change in the paradigm of the game, presenting a totally open world, being an installment that seeks to be very ambitious.”

“Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is the biggest leap the franchise has made since its arrival on 3D. Never has the trainer’s adventure made so much sense,” mentions our colleague Alejandro Castillo in the conclusions of his analysis for MeriStation in Spain.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review: Gameplay

The gameplay in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is perhaps the most exciting part about the game, especially for players whove been at Pokémon for decades. As in the other Pokémon games, you can travel with up to six Pokémon, who faint when theyre out of HP. You can revive them by resting in town or at a base camp, or with potions or remedies. No Pokémon ever dies.

Youre free to roam around the world of Hisui as you see fit, and youll gain access to more areas as you beat more nobles. Soon, youll be able to sprint, dig, swim, climb and fly all around the area and its awesome. The game utilizes all of these mechanics as you travel to different terrains, so you can go from riding a huge Pokémon in the water straight to sprinting on land.

The game also uses many typical RPG mechanics, such as crouching and running. As you approach a Pokémon, you can choose to throw a Pokéball or fruit from your satchel , or toss out a Pokémon for battle. This is where the gameplay becomes a bit frustrating.

As with most other Pokémon games, battles are turn-based. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, you can choose from Strong Style and Agile Style attacks, as well as normal attacks. While Strong Style raises your impact, it also raises the chance of your opponent taking two turns in a row Agile Style works the opposite way. Messing with the order of turns sometimes doesnt work, and it can feel super unfair.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review: Visuals And Graphics

Unfortunately, the visuals and graphics in Pokémon Legends: Arceus rarely live up to Nintendos ridiculously high standard from other open-world games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

First, lets cover whats great. The characters and their clothing look exactly as youd hope, with vaguely chibi facial expressions that mix perfectly with the Pokémon themselves. The Pokémon are animated just as they are in other recent Pokémon releases, such as New Pokémon Snap. Its a joy to watch them walk around while you hide in a bush nearby.

Thats about where the good graphics end, though. The scenery is beautiful when you see it from a distance, but up close, trees are painfully simple, and they appear over and over again. Frames get dropped all the time, especially when a Pokémon is moving around in the background of a scene. I have yet to see a Pokémon fly in a smooth circle. There’s also some extremely frustrating lag, especially during the final frenzied noble battle.

The game’s dark areas also highlight some painfully simple design elements. For example, in a dark room, characters and walls appear with slight white outlines that flicker as you move about the space.

Pokemon Legends Arceus Review Scores

Pin by Damian Grey on Pokemon

Pokemon Legends Arceus takes place in the Sinnoh region, years before the events of the first Pokemon titles. Players are tasked with exploring the region to fill the first-ever Pokedex. Becuase of how early the game is the relationship between Pokemon and people is still developing. This means there are wild, more aggressive Pokemon to encounter.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Reviews

“Fans of RPG titles will likely enjoy the depth of exploration offered in the Hisui region, while those who enjoy the Pokemon games will have the opportunity to have a brand new journey alongside their Pokemon companions. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the perfect entry point for those who have never played a Pokemon game, while also being a great way for long-time fans to embrace new challenges. The game does an excellent job of pushing boundaries while staying true to what has kept Pokemon popular for over two decades and is an eye-opening glimpse at what Game Freak could do in future games of the series.”

Score: 4.5/5

“Its filled with excellent ideas aimed at changing a series that has largely grown stale. But some of the execution breeds frustration. Exploring the open world is freeing, but also awkward, until I unlock more travel options later in the game. Legends: Arceus is graphically dreadful, with flat textures and pop-in rampant in every area, but the Pokemon animate wonderfully. Still, Ill gladly take an imperfect Pokemon game that takes a chance on something different, even if its not always successful.”

Pokemon Legends: Arceus launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on Friday, January 28, 2022.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus On Switch

For 25 years, the main series Pokemon franchise has felt like it suffered from if youve played one game, youve played them all. Yet somehow, it has had such a tight grip on people like me who have been there since the very beginning with Pokemon Red and Blue.

While Ive had major criticisms of the lack of advancements in the series, I continued to buy every new game anyway because the formula simply worked. Still, I wished someday The Pokemon Company would be bold enough to try something new and ambitious.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the answer to that wish. Its the first time that the series has been completely turned on its head to break the safe RPG formula its known for over two decades. While the game undoubtedly has some glaring issues, I believe that it takes the necessary steps forward for the main series games.

Instead of playing as a child who is starting their Pokemon journey to collect gym badges and become champion of the region, Pokemon Legends: Arceus has a brand new premise. Instead, youre a slightly older teenager who has been sent back in time to help an ancient region form its first Pokedex and solve a problem that has been affecting their sacred Noble Pokemon. Its a nice change of pace, though by the end it feels almost as repetitive as gyms did.

Also, if youre a huge fan of battling , you may find the game to be lacking in this regard. Yes, battling still exists, but the number of trainer battles is limited and feels remarkably simplified.

How Legends: Arceus Reviews Compare To Past Pokmon Games On Metacritic

Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a new action RPG for Switch, is now the highest-rated Pokémon game on Metacritic, based on aggregated critic reviews.

The long-awaited Pokémon action RPG for Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, has finally been released and Pokémon fans and critics alike are already comparing its review scores with past Pokémon games. Pokémon Legends: Arceus reviews have been mostly positive so far, with 40 out of 44 critic reviews on Metacritic being positive, and an overall aggregate Metascore of 85. Several critics gave Pokémon Legends: Arceus a perfect score of 100.

Overall the change of direction for the Pokémon franchise has been widely and highly praised by fans and critics alike. Game Freak deviated from tradition with Pokémon Legends: Arceus, and it paid off. Recent Pokémon games have largely been remakes of older games, like 2019s Pokémon Sword & Shield and 2021s Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. A prequel to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, the new setting of Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Hisui region is a bygone era of the Sinnoh region, inspired by Feudal Japan.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Review

Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in the Pokémon world before many of the technologies and discoveries about Pokémon weve come to rely on in the main games were made. Your PokeDex, for instance, is styled as a hand-written notebook instead of a digital index. With no PCs to store Pokémon, you instead leave them in a pasture at Jubilife Village . Pokémon breeding and eggs hadnt been discovered yet, so that system isnt available nor is it yet known that Pokémon can hold items. Trading Pokémon with others still exists both locally and online , but Pokémon that would normally evolve by trading now evolve simply by using certain items you can find through normal play. The past was a simpler time, certainly, but in many ways its a lot more convenient!

Don’t Miss: Where To Find Toxic In Pokemon Sword

Explorers In A Dangerous Time And Space

Up until now, the “main series” Pokémon games have been strictly turn-based RPGs following a young protagonist on a quest to become a powerful Pokémon trainer. Each successive game has layered on a slate of new Pokémon to wrangle and, more recently, increasingly absurd and bloated mechanics to try and spice up a system that fundamentally remained unchanged. So at last, we have Legends: Arceus: the reinvention we asked for. Developer Game Freak has scrapped nearly everything Ive come to expect from a typical Pokémon game Gyms, random encounters, an Elite Four, trainer battles on the overworld, an evil team bent on world domination and started over, rethinking even its most basic systems like Pokémon encounters and evolution from the ground up. A lot of this impressive transformation pays off, in that we get to interact with creatures that have never felt more alive in more dynamic ways, but Pokemons evolution is not yet complete, because the semi-open world around all of that feels like an unimpressive afterthought due to its bland emptiness.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review

Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes risks to introduce new gameplay to an old series, restoring the enjoyment in a trainer journey and Pokémon tale.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus reimagines the linear gameplay of previous titles with stunning open-world-inspired exploration and participant-driven progression. Developed by Game Freak and revealed by Nintendo, Pokémon Legends: Arceus highlights the strengths of the OLED Nintendo Switch while updating Pokémon gameplay with modern RPG mechanics. However, Pokémon Legends: Arceus does not just innovate gameplay, however revitalizes the importance of the trainer’s journey and the bond between a player and their crew.

While past Pokémon titles stick closely to a set of narrative devices, Pokémon Legends: Arceus straight away shakes things up. As the primary character, a younger Galaxy Team member of the Hisui region, avid gamers workforce up with Professor Laventon to hold out missions for Commander Kamado and Captain Cyllene. These missions include scouting expansive wild places for Pokémon species to fill the primary Pokédex, in addition to assisting the Diamond and Pearl clans as they take care of frenzied Lord and Lady Pokémon. Each persona encountered has a special and fascinating tale, growing a deep sense of pride when conducting goals during the narrative.

Many review sites have positively rated the game, we have listed them below:

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review: Requests And Wisps

Pokémon Black & White

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is filled with extra things to do, particularly with the added challenges of requests and wisps.

Requests are the games version of side quests, and they feature interesting pleas from folks around Hisui. Whether they want to see the Pokédex entry for a specific Pokémon, or they need a Pokémon to help their farm, the requests are largely focused on the spiritual purpose of the game: To help Hisui and its people live in harmony with Pokémon.

Wisps are glowing purple beings scattered all around the land, similar to Breath of the Wilds Koroks. Youre often rewarded for looking around a dark corner or sneaking behind a building with a wisp, and youll get new rewards from a cute kid in town if you tell her how many wisps youve found.

What Is Pokemon Legend Arceus

In 2022, The Pokémon Company, in collaboration with Nintendo, will be publishing a role-playing game called Pokemon Legends: Arceus for the Nintendo Switch, developed by Game Freak.

It is the eighth installment in the Pokémon video game series. It is a prequel to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl & Pokemon Platinum and their 2021 remake Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

The game is due to release on 28 January 2022. Including the announcement of this game, as well as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, was the 25th Anniversary event celebration of the Pokémon franchise.

What We Said About Pokmon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl

If a good remake is defined by its loyalty to the original, then Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are very good remakes indeed. They are Diamond and Pearl down to nearly every detail, looking nicer than ever before with a few small tweaks, most of which are pretty good ones. It leaves in some of the originals roster flaws, but theyre largely forgivable if youre like me and have some degree of nostalgia for a time when Pokémons scope was smaller. And yet, I cant help but be disappointed that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl werent braver in how they improved upon the originals in the same way other Pokémon remakes were, bringing even some now-historic improvements back to correct historys mistakes. Of course, I still had a perfectly pleasant time revisiting both Sinnoh and the simultaneously simpler yet more challenging era of Pokémon that took place within it reminded me of a time when this series asked a bit more of us. – Rebeckah Valentine, November 19, 2021

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review: Verdict

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a great game, its visual shortcomings notwithstanding. While some of the turn-based mechanics can seem unfair, the games expansive world is simply joyful, filled with adorable creatures and exciting surprises to discover. Although Pokémon Legends: Arceus isnt perfect, its pitfalls make me excited for future Pokémon Legends titles, especially if they continue to explore the interesting relationship between humans and Pokémon.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus: A New Direction For Pokmon Franchise

Despite this, Pokémon Legends: Arceuss Metascore of 85 makes it the highest-rated game from The Pokémon Company currently on Metacritic. 2021s New Pokémon Snap comes in second place as far as critic reviews, with a Metascore of 79. In third place is a mobile game, Pokémon TCG Online for iOS, which has 78. Interestingly, New Pokémon Snap and Pokémon TCG Online for iOS both have considerably lower user scores than their critic-determined Metascores. Pokémon Legends: Arceus user score is sitting at 7.7, and if Legends: Arceus‘s record-breaking retail sales are anything to go by, in addition to a current Audience rating of 4.3 out of 5 on Google, with 88% positive reviews, Arceus‘s future Metacritic user score will likely remain fairly high.

IGN called the new setting drab and empty, and while Legends: Arceus landscape is more barren, this is arguably intentional, due to the game’s ancient-era setting. But even such apologetics can’t disguise the fact that the game has received quite a bit of negative commentary around its graphics, though its Pokémon are generally vibrant and its art design quite pleasing. The storytelling moves away from the perhaps overused tale throughout the franchise of a protagonist on their Pokémon trainer journey. Instead, Pokémon Legends: Arceus offers greater insight into the lore of the Pokémon universe by taking players back to where it all started.
