The PlayStation 5 represents the pinnacle in next-gen gaming, offering solid 4K@60fps gameplay alongside lightning-fast load times thanks to the inclusion of a custom-designed SSD although it is a little small at 825GB, and unlike the Xbox Series X, its pretty difficult to upgrade the internal storage.
When it comes to performance, expect ray-tracing, high-quality textures, improved particle effects and a generally higher fidelity experience than that of the PS4, but its arguably the DualSense controller that truly separates it from the competition.
Sonys DualSense controller sports adjustable triggers, meaning the bumpers can better simulate the trigger of a gun or pulling back a bow before firing, and the advanced haptic motors make things feel much more realistic too. The two technologies combined offer a huge step forward compared to the Xbox controller, which offers minimal differences at best.
There may not be a lower-powered variant like the Xbox Series S, but there is the disc-less PS5 Digital available at a discount without compromising on next-gen performance.
Be warned though: the PS5 is a chonk, no matter which variant you go for.
The Xbox Series X is Microsofts answer to next-gen gaming, offering the same 4K@120fps performance with ray-tracing, high-quality textures and improved particle effects as the PS5, and although not quite as fast as Sonys bespoke SSD, the inclusion of an SSD means games are snappy too.

Nintendos most popular console right now is predictably unusual. The Switch is a sort of handheld/home console hybrid you can connect it to your TV to play on the big screen, or take it with you on the go as a high-powered handheld, with various different control configurations for each setup. While the design looks a little dated compared to the newer Switch OLED model, the two handhelds offer the same game experience, with no graphical enhancements on offer from the upgraded model.
That said, you dont always get to play the latest AAA titles on the Switch due to the lack of graphical power available, but there is a huge array of Nintendo exclusive and indie titles available to buy or download.
Its the console youll need if you want to play the latest Zelda and Mario titles, and its the best bet if you want versions of huge games like Skyrim that you can take with you on the go.
The Nvidia Shield TV may seem expensive for a media streamer, but the games available on Google Play on the system are fairly cheap and theres plenty more on offer too.
While the Shield offers all the same features that a standard media streamer would it also offers a number of Shield-exclusive games that are pretty power-intensive, and it offers support for a range of Bluetooth controllers too.
What We Said About Pokmon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl
If a good remake is defined by its loyalty to the original, then Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are very good remakes indeed. They are Diamond and Pearl down to nearly every detail, looking nicer than ever before with a few small tweaks, most of which are pretty good ones. It leaves in some of the originals roster flaws, but theyre largely forgivable if youre like me and have some degree of nostalgia for a time when Pokémons scope was smaller. And yet, I cant help but be disappointed that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl werent braver in how they improved upon the originals in the same way other Pokémon remakes were, bringing even some now-historic improvements back to correct historys mistakes. Of course, I still had a perfectly pleasant time revisiting both Sinnoh and the simultaneously simpler yet more challenging era of Pokémon that took place within it reminded me of a time when this series asked a bit more of us. – Rebeckah Valentine, November 19, 2021

Up until now, the “main series” Pokémon games have been strictly turn-based RPGs following a young protagonist on a quest to become a powerful Pokémon trainer. Each successive game has layered on a slate of new Pokémon to wrangle and, more recently, increasingly absurd and bloated mechanics to try and spice up a system that fundamentally remained unchanged. So at last, we have Legends: Arceus: the reinvention we asked for. Developer Game Freak has scrapped nearly everything Ive come to expect from a typical Pokémon game Gyms, random encounters, an Elite Four, trainer battles on the overworld, an evil team bent on world domination and started over, rethinking even its most basic systems like Pokémon encounters and evolution from the ground up. A lot of this impressive transformation pays off, in that we get to interact with creatures that have never felt more alive in more dynamic ways, but Pokemons evolution is not yet complete, because the semi-open world around all of that feels like an unimpressive afterthought due to its bland emptiness.
Pokmon Legends: Arceus Price And Release Date
Pokémon Legends: Arceus will be available on January 28 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. You can preorder the game now for $60 from various retailers, including , GameStop, and Best Buy. Both physical cartridge and digital download versions of the game are available.
Preorder bonuses are available for the physical versions at specific retailers too is giving players a digital download for a special outfit modeled after the Pokémon Garchomp, while GameStop is giving away a set of art cards based on the game’s design. A Blessing Or A Curse
Powerful Pokémon nobles of the Hisui region are known as lords and ladies. Normally revered, a strange phenomenon now causes them to fly into a frenzy, becoming extremely difficult to rein in! As a member of the Survey Corps, youll be called upon to quell these furious nobles.
Frenzied Pokémon are larger in size and shine brightly as a result of their strange power.
Calm these Pokémon by throwing balms made of their favourite foods at them.
Nobles have powerful attacks especially when frenzied! Study their moves carefully, time your dodges, and aim those balms carefully.
When theyre caught off-guard, throw your Pokémon into the mix to start a battle. Defeating a noble in battle will leave them temporarily dazed, so use the opportunity to pelt them with as many balms as you can!
Be on the lookout for alphas roaming about, too! These frenzied Pokémon with glowing red eyes will pursue and attack researchers without hesitation. If youre spotted by an alpha, get ready to run or challenge them to a Pokémon battle!

Nintendo Switch Lite Best For On
Pros
If the standard Nintendo Switch isnt portable enough for your needs, the smaller Switch Lite might tick your boxes. It offers the same core Nintendo Switch experience, complete with the latest Switch titles, but with a smaller 5.5in display and a lighter form factor.
However, unlike the standard console, it isnt hybrid its a handheld console only, with no way to connect it to a TV. The Joy-Cons arent removable either, which might cause a few problems with gesture-based titles.
Still, its cheaper than the standard Nintendo Switch and for those that primarily play handheld consoles, the TV-less nature of the Lite isnt a huge issue.
Nintendo Switch Oled Upgrades
To review briefly, there are four main differences between the base Switch and the Switch OLED:
- The base Switch has a 6-inch LCD screen the Switch OLED has a 7-inch OLED screen
- The base Switch has a small, flimsy kickstand the Switch OLED has a large, sturdy kickstand
- The base Switch has small, workmanlike speakers the Switch OLED has larger, more robust speakers
- The base Switch relies exclusively on Wi-Fi the Switch OLEDs dock has an Ethernet port
I like all of these upgrades, and think that each one adds a tangible level of utility to the Switch. The screen makes games look better the kickstand helps the console stand freely the speakers provide better sound and the Ethernet port helps download games faster.
At the same time, none of these made a night-and-day difference between the Switch OLED and the base Switch that Ive been using for four years. A 6-inch LCD screen at 720p is not that different from a 7-inch OLED screen at 720p. The kickstand is only situationally useful, and the speakers are moot with a good pair of headphones. Plus, the Switch runs perfectly well on Wi-Fi.
When Nintendo first announced the Switch OLED, I saw a contingent of early adopters falling over themselves to be first in line for a pre-order. Whats unusual was that many of them already owned Switches.

Its not the next-gen console, but the Xbox One S is a great console for the majority of gamers.
Its smaller and lighter than the Xbox Series X and the power unit is built-in which is also a nice touch. Although the Xbox One S supports 4K resolution, its limited to video playback so youll have to hold out for the Xbox Series X for 4K gaming.
Just be sure to get one at the right price as stock dwindles, were seeing some retailers stock the console for between $/£200-300. Considering that was the price when it was the current-gen console, thats too much to pay. Wed advise paying no more than $/£200.

Gotta Befriend ’em All
It wouldn’t be a living Pokemon world without some other humans though, and the shift from player vs player battles also allows the game to back away from repeating NPCs. There’s no ‘Beauty’, ‘Youngster’, or ‘Hiker’ trainer types here it’s you, a world filled with Pokemon, and uniquely-named characters, even down to the smaller one-hit NPCs that you’ll interact with throughout the world. It’s these Hisuian residents that’ll give you Requests, smaller tasks to balance out the core story Missions. Requests are always full of personality testing your Pokemon knowledge and offering up insights into how the Hisui residents are learning to overcome their fears and work together with Pokemon. Some are more research based, but others are touching little personal stories that all help bring the world to life.
However, it’s worth noting that this is a game that is solely focused on the story and as such it is a majority solo experience. If you’re looking for a competitive Pokemon title, this isn’t it. While you can trade Pokemon with other players, that’s as far as the multiplayer goes. It’s in keeping with the focus of the game being more on the Pokemon than the trainer-vs-trainer battles, but it definitely won’t be the ideal experience for all Pokemon fans.
