First of all, getting lucky friends at all is restricted to trainers you have the best friends relationship level with, so even if you have 200 friends, if theyre all below that relationship level it just wont happen until you improve that.
If you do have best friends, then youre set to proceed. From that relationship level and onwards, every time you interact with them in a way that improves the relationship level meaning gifts, raids or trading for the first time each day, for example you have a chance to become lucky friends with them. This chance is small, but fires frequently, as you can send someone a gift once a day, which means you can roll the dice on getting a lucky friend quite regularly.
And why only try one at once? You can send plenty of gifts a day, and that means plenty of lucky friends chances.
The chance to become lucky friends during each interaction is believed to be around 5%, as listed on the game wiki page.

Pokmon Go Friendship Levels And Trade Costs
When adding a friend in Pokémon Go, there are four levels: Good, Great, Ultra, and Best. Raising friendship every day will improve this level over time. The higher your friendship is with somebody, the better. Youll be able to trade Pokémon for less Stardust, do more damage if you raid together, and even get a bonus Premier Ball or two when you complete a raid.
Special trades that feature Legendary or Shiny Pokémon not in your Pokédex can cost up to 1,000,000 Stardust to trade, so get your friendship levels up first. The trade cost decreases to 800,000 for Great Friends, 80,000 for Ultra Friends, and 40,000 for Best Friends. Higher friendship has no effect on trade distance.

What Does Lucky Friends Do In Pokemon Go
Having your relationship level set to lucky friends in Pokemon Go will mean that your next trade with that friend is certain to be a lucky trade. Lucky trades upgrade the traded Pokemon to a lucky Pokemon for both trainers. You will lose your lucky friends status after the trade, however.
A lucky Pokemon will have minimum stat values of 12 in each stat, meaning they are certain to be at least fairly strong, and much more likely to have top-tier standards than Pokemon traded without the lucky bonus in play.
Make sure to cash in on that free lucky Pokemon when you can trainers and dont worry about losing the lucky friends status, you can always get it back, you just need to be lucky again.

Lucky Friends
When you are Lucky Friends with someone, the next time you trade with each other, both Pokémon will become Lucky Pokémon!
How do you become Lucky Friends? Once you become Best Friends, you will have a chance to become Lucky Friends! You will have this chance once per day when you and your Best Friend trade Pokémon, open a Gift from each other, team up in raids and Gym battles, or challenge each other to a Trainer Battle.
How do I know if my Best Friend is now a Lucky Friend? Similar to when you level up your friendships, you and your Best Friend will receive a notification when you have become Lucky Friends. Youll also be able to see that theyre your new Lucky Friend in your Friend List and on their friend profile page.
After completing the trade, your Lucky Friend status will return to Best Friend status. Dont worry, Trainersby doing the same steps, you can try to become Lucky Friends again!

The Pokémon itself doesn’t have a different color, like Shiny Pokémon do, but they do have a special advantage:
It seems that Lucky Pokémon require less Stardust to power up, which means they can reach a higher CP much faster than other Pokémon. Plus, a Lucky Pokémon can be detected by the Pokédex, so you can keep track of them!
More precisely, it seems like Lucky Pokémon only require half the Stardust and Candy to power up as a regular Pokémon, making them much more efficient to power up.

How To Get Guaranteed Lucky Pokmon In Pokmon Go
In September 2018, developer Niantic made some changes to increase your chances of receiving Lucky Pokémon.
If you have discovered less than 10 Lucky Pokémon, then a Pokémon in your inventory caught in July or August 2016 will 100% become Lucky after a trade.
To clarify, if either trainer has had less than 10, then both creatures in the trade will be Lucky. So in theory, even if you have more than 10, if you can find others with less than 10, you can keep getting guaranteed Lucky Pokémon. Thanks to the Silph Road reddit for clarifying this!
It should also be noted as part of this change, all Lucky Pokémon stats have became now stronger. They were previously started from around the 10/10/10 mark, and it’s now increased to 12/12/12 .
Otherwise, the other method is being Lucky Friends with the player you are trading with.

What Does And Does Not Contribute To Activating Lucky Friends
So, as with many aspects of Pokemon Go, I’ve heard many things about the functionality of how Pokemon Go functions. One of the worst things about it is the misinformation that gets spread around.
As an example some people believed that you could “pick up” the pokeballs that missed catching the Pokemon.
Some rumours about Lucky Friends I have heard is that activating Lucky Eggs can help boost your chance of activating Lucky Friends.
This would make sense – the names match , and it’s likely that you will be a high level by the time you have 2 or 3 best friends, making Lucky Eggs redundant.
So what I want to know is what does and what does not contribute to activating Lucky Friends, within the Friends System?
As and example of what does not contribute, is interactions per day. Levelling up friends only counts one interaction per day – so for example, interacting more that once per day, does not contribute
As far as I know there’s not a definitive answer on the Lucky Egg, in large part because it’s not considered to be likely to have an impact apart from the coincidence in naming, anyway, it has no reason to be related. So I don’t believe there is a study on the matter.
The Silph Road Reddit has seen quite a lot of research on the matter of Lucky Friends, of course see for example this thread which used just over 1000 interactions to test various possibilities.
How To Become Lucky Friends In Pokemon Go
Along with lucky Pokemon, you can also become lucky friends with someone in Pokemon Go. This is essentially completely random once youve reached the best friends stage by sending gifts back and forth, theres a small chance that every time you open a gift from a best friend, you become lucky friends.
When youre lucky friends with someone, all this means is that the next trade between the two of you will be a lucky trade, resulting in two lucky Pokemon. Once youve completed the lucky trade, your lucky friend status will disappear, but can be regained by sending gifts back and forth again.

Finding Current Friendship Days Counter
If you are not in control of the Best Friend level-up timing because:
- The timer has said ‘play together for 1 more day’ since yesterday or even longer
- Your friend has your unopened gift, but you have no gift from your friend
- You don’t have any way to communicate
This worked for me:
- I remembered the name of the friend in control.
- As soon as I opened the game, I immediately went to News:
- I saw that the friend had opened my gift a few hours ago.
- I quickly pressed ‘Items’ and activated a lucky egg.Right after that, I got the Best Friend notification and 200,000 XP points
This also worked for me:
- Compete in raid with friend, which raised us to Best Friend status, and it even said so in the screen before the ‘catch’ event.
- I had no active lucky egg though.
- I completed the catch, then immediately activated a lucky egg. When message for the update to my XP arrived, it was 200,000.

Getting The Most Of This Update For Pokemon Go
Even though you can only get one Lucky Pokemon from a specific friend per day, theres no known limit on how many people this applies to. Technically the only max number of daily Lucky Friends we can identify is 200. That number is solely based on the fact that the most friends you can have at one time is 200.
Even if youre not going to be getting 200 lucky Pokemon in one day there are still plenty of ways to make the most of this update:
- Save up on top-tier Pokemon Candies
- Trade top-tier Pokemon
- Save up on rare candies
You still need to have the same amount of candies for evolving and leveling up, so save those. However, being able to get the most powerful creatures with the guarantee of having the lucky status is a game changer.
It has the chance of quickly increasing the number of high IV Pokemon that people have on their teams. At the same time itll decrease the need for exorbitant amounts of stardust to power up high-tier monsters.

How To Get Lucky Pokemon In Pokemon Go
Getting lucky Pokemon in Pokemon Go isn’t particularly straightforward. There’s one core concept though you can only get lucky Pokemon through trading with other trainers. Every trade you make has a chance to come out as a lucky Pokemon. The older the Pokemon is, the higher chance it has of becoming lucky, but the trade only takes into account the age of the oldest Pokemon of the two. So you could trade a Pokemon from 2016 and one from 2020 with each other, and the game would calculate the lucky odds based on the 2016 one.
It’s possible to get a guaranteed lucky Pokemon in a trade if one of the two Pokemon/trainers fulfills the following criteria:
- Has received less than 10 lucky Pokemon from trades
- Pokemon was caught between July – August 2016
As long as that’s the case for one of the Pokemon being traded, it will be a lucky trade.
Can Lucky Friends Trade From A Distance
This allows you to trade with practically any Trainer as long as you are 100 meters or less from one another, adding onto that comes Lucky Pokémon which you are randomly granted through Trading, and then to round it all off you now even have the chance to reach Lucky Friends status which guarantees your very next trade
