Identify The Card With The Name And Number In The Set

It’s $500! Are Premium Pokemon Cards Worth It?

Finally, identify the card by looking up its name and card number on eBay.

The name will be located above the illustration of the card and the number is on the bottom right of the card. After checking all three of these steps, you should easily be able to identify every card, even if you dont know exactly what set it is in.

How Much Is A Complete Base Set Of Pokmon Cards Worth

How much is a complete set of Pokémon cards worth? Well, it depends on the set, and if its 1st edition or not. Every trading card collector knows that completing a set is one of the toughest and most satisfying achievements in the trading card world. As vintage cards go up in value, the original sets become more challenging to complete. But some sets are way cheaper than others.

Sold eBay listings range from $650- $1,200 for a complete 102/102 Unlimited Base set.

Japanese Promo Tropical Mega Battle No 3 Trainer

Like the 1999 Japanese Promo Tropical Mega Battle No. 2 Trainer, this No. 3 Trainer card was awarded to the respective third-place winners from each region at the 1999 Tropical Mega Battle in Hawaii. This event was the first Pokémon TCG World Championship, which is partly the reason these cards are so historically significant. Of course, the exclusivity and rarity further cement their place in the list of the most rare and expensive Pokémon cards. This edition is graded CGC NM/Mint+ 8.5 and is the only one graded by CGC.

Psa 10 Neo Genesis First Edition Holo Lugia: $129000

Pokemon HD: Original Pokemon Cards Worth Money

Neo Genesis is effectively the Base Set of the second generation of Pokemon. It was the first time Pokemon from Silver, Gold, or Crystal appeared in the TCG, and it was also marred by a large number of misprints and mistakes in its very first run. Alongside it being the mascot of Pokemon Silver, that’s mainly why a mint condition, holo, first edition Lugia from Neo Genesis is so highly desirable. The PSA has only given a PSA10 grade to 43 of these.

Prices for this card are incredibly unstable, even between cards with the same condition. In November 2020 PWCC sold a copy for $129,000, while less than a year later in September 2021, Goldin sold one for “just”$47,970.

Psa 10 Torchic Gold Star Holo Ex Team Rocket Returns: $50000

In the early-to-mid 2000s, popularity in Pokemon was waning. “Pokemania” was on the way out, and that meant a lot of the Pokemon TCG expansions at the time suffered from lower sales and smaller print runs. With Pokemon back on top again now, cards from that era often see higher values than cards older than them. A great example of this is the Gold Star Torchic from EX Team Rocket Returns.

Gold Star Pokemon showcase Pokemon in their shiny forms and have the Pokemon breaking out of the frame as an early example of the many alternate styles the TCG would later experiment with. Why Torchic specifically is worth so much is anyone’s guess, but with only 17 verified PSA 10 grade copies out there, the PSA values them at $50,000 each. Actual auction prices are a bit lower though, as in 2020 PWCC Auctions sold a copy for $25,400.

Where To Sell Your Set

You have two paths to consider: local or online.

Local options include local card shops, Facebook marketplace, and word of mouth.

Online options include eBay.

If you want to make the biggest profit, eBay. If you want to sell fast, eBay. You get the idea. The reason eBay is so lucrative for card selling is that it is already the largest second-hand market for Pokémon cards. You can try other sites like tcgplayer or trollandtoad, but youll get the most eyes from eBay.

Pokmon World Championships Ken Sugimori Pokmon Cut Auto Dna

Ken Sugimori is an integral part of Pokémon history. He was an art director for the video games, a talented illustrator, and an original Pokémon character designer responsible for fan favorites such as Venusaur, Gengar, Snorlax, and Mewtwo. However, he also had contract restrictions preventing him from giving autographs. Thats why this card is so special. While its not officially a Pokémon, these blank cards were custom-crafted to allow artists to add drawings and autographs at the 2004 Pokémon World Championships. Ken drew Pikachu and signed it in both Kanji and English. Its a unique, one-off piece that wont be repeated, so its place on this list of the most rare and expensive Pokémon cards is very secure!

Ex Deoxys Gold Star Rayquaza Holographic

Coming from the 2005 EX Deoxys set, this Holographic Gold Star Rayquaza is one of the most sought-after Pokémon cards. The set had seven variants of Rayquaza, and while this was not the rarest in the collection, the Gold Star made it the most desirable. Today, it has a very low PSA 10 population, sitting at just 47, making it particularly unique. Masakazu Fukuda designed the artwork with the dragon seeming to leap off the card.

Pokmon Japanese Topsun Holofoil Charizard #6

Its so shiny! The 1995 Japanese Topsun Holofoil Charizard has an all-over holofoil coating that looks spectacular. The downside of this effect is that its fragile and scratches easily, which means finding a mint condition card is even more challenging. Consequently, this PSA 10 Gem Mint example is one of the most rare and expensive Pokémon cards available. It boasts no scuffs, bright colors, and a clear print. Out of a total population of 202, only 18 have such a high grade.

Pokmon Base Set 1st Edition Shadowless Holo Hitmonchan #7

10 Rare Pokemon Cards on Snupps. The Pokemon trading game was first ...

Back to the 1999 base set, where were looking at one of the greatest fighting Pokémon ever.

A homage to the quick fists of Jackie Chan, this humanoid monster sports a pair of boxing gloves, and even throws a jab as a basic attack.

The rarest card weve seen so far, there are just 56 gem mint copies at the current time of writing.

This has translated to sky-high prices, even when compared to many of the other holos seen above.

In any case, its definitely deserving of a place on the list.

Kangaskhan Family Event Trophy

  • Release Date: 1998
  • Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $150,000

Were now in the top five, and the prices of these most expensive Pokemon cards continue to skyrocket. This 1998 Trophy Pokemon card could only be obtained by participating in a special tournament in Japan. The adorable item features artwork depicting Kangaskhan with its baby in its pouch, surrounded by holo sparkles.

Fittingly, the contest required both a child and their parent to participate alongside each other in TCG battles. According to reports, there are only 11 of these currently in existence that has been graded, making it one of the rarest Trophy Pokemon cards to exist.

In October 2020, two PSA 10s of the collectible went for $150k. With its scarcity, we expect this Pokemon cards value will only continue to go up over the next couple of years.

Base Set: Limited Edition 1st Printing

These cards are the most valuable and rare of the Base Set print runs. This initial print run was printed, distributed, and sold out before Pokémania fully took root in the United States, making them extremely rare today, particularly in Near Mint condition. Collectors who do own these cards will typically have them authenticated and graded by a grading service such as Beckett Grading Services or Professional Sports Authenticator . These cards, graded or ungraded, if authentic, can carry significant value. For example, the above Charizard card could be worth upwards of $5000 or more to a collector in perfect condition.

First Edition Holographic Charizard

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $24,000

The #4 Charizard is by far the most desirable of all the first edition Pokémon cards.

Charizard made its first appearance in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games released for the Nintendo Game Boy and Game Boy Color back in the mid-90s and trainers have been relying on the character’s overpowering fire and flying abilities to win battles ever since.

Just how powerful are its fire abilities?

Well, simply refer to the bottom of the card’s front and you can see that Charizard is capable of melting boulders and starting forest fires with ease.

Charizard’s appeal as a dragon and one of the more rare cards certainly adds to its popularity but I think where this card gets an extra boost in value comes from the fact that Charizard appeared on the cover art of the Pokémon Red video game:

That additional exposure greatly increased the character’s notoriety and has driven up the value of this card similar to the effect we see with the Garbage Pail Kids card, Adam Bomb, and its status as the original cover art for that series.

Regardless of why this card is so popular, its value will continue to soar just like the lovable flying dragon creature itself.

Magikarp Tamamushi University Promo

I Graded My Prototype $10,000 Pokemon Card

Magikarp is a pretty useless Pokemon, only capable of knowing the moves Splash, Flail, and Tackle. It’s signature move is Splash, the only attack in the Pokemon games that literally does nothing. Why such an attack was created, I’ll never know, but those who invested the time into Magikarp were very thankful once it evolved into a Gyarados. But we’re not talking about that sea serpent here. This special Magikarp card showcases the orange fish hurling what looks to be a devastating Ice Beam attack. This card is so unique and goes right along with the Kanghaskan promo. It too was released only in Japan in 1998, but this time for the Tamamushi University Hyper Test. This test was a two day battle arena between card players of many ages, and only the winners of the final day were able to take home this rare treasure. If you’d like to find one for yourself, you could be spending anywhere from $3,500 to $4,500. I know that seems like overkill for a simple card, but when compared to the upcoming entries, this will look like mere pocket change. I’m not even halfway joking.

First Edition Holographic Raichu

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $2,500

Raichu, the rodent-like evolved form of Pikachu, is an electric-type Pokémon that uses its tail to gather electricity from both the ground and atmosphere.

As it charges, the creature stores the electricity in those circular, yellow sacs on its cheeks and once fully charged, Raichu’s ears will point directly upwards.

Raichu also uses its pointed tail as a ground to prevent itself from being electrically shocked.

Gyarados Base Set Shadowless

Since its introduction in the Kanto region, Gyarados has existed as one of the coolest Pokemon designs ever. Whether it was its great Pokemon card designs, or its shiny red form being catchable in Pokemon Gold & Silver, fans have grown attached to the leviathan.

The Shadowless version of its Base Set card shows off just how terrifyingly cool this Pokemon is, and for those who can’t get enough, the card will cost close to $70 to obtain.

First Edition Holographic Ninetales

Original Pokemon Trading Cards (Rare, Holo Rare, Reverse Holo Cards ...

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $3,000

It’s easy to see where Ninetales gets its name although the spelling of “tails” is noticeably different.

And while each of its golden-white tails is catching to the eye, it is said that simply grabbing one of them can result in a 1,000-year curse giving this fox-like Pokémon its reputation of extreme vengeance.

Inspired by the kitsune of Japanese folklore, Ninetales holds mysterious powers within its nine tails and can even control the mind with its piercing, red eyes.

First Edition Holographic Hitmonchan

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $3,250

Sporting boxing gloves, shoulder pads and extreme quickness, Hitmonchan exhibits every bit of the appearance of the fighting-type Pokémon that he is.

The five protrusions on top of its head round out an overall ferocious look.

Bidding for this card in high grade can be just as ferocious as Hitmonchan itself as prices will often rise above $3,000 or more.

Summer Battle Road 2002

Its not too often that a card graded below a 9 sells for more than a few thousand dollars, but thats exactly what happened with one copy of the No.2 Trainer Battle Road Summer promo in March of 2021. The card in question, which had actually been mislabeled by Beckett, received just a 7.5 rating, though still sold for an impressive $34,100.

The card was given out to winners of the Kanto Summer Battle Road tournament in 2002 and came in male and female variants. Not many of them have made their way west in the two decades since then, with only two of them ever being graded by the PSA. One did receive the elusive GEM-MT 10 rating, however, so may well end up selling for considerably more if it ever goes to auction.

Mewtwo Base Set Shadowless

If Pokemon fans were to list and rank the original 151 based on how iconic or notable they are Mewtwo would easily be in the top ten, and possibly the top five, only trailing the starters and Pikachu.

This means that the Shadowless Base Set version of the Psychic-type going for $200 shouldn’t be too shocking. It happened to be the primary villain and focus of the franchise’s first theatrical movie, which kept it culturally relevant and significant to the Pokemon franchise for the last 20-plus years.

Identify Type And Assess Rarity

This Could Be the First Pokemon Card Worth $1,000,000 #Shorts

The first step to identify Pokemon card value is to check its type and rarity. In other words, how likely the card is to come across from any given booster pack or special event, and if it has any special characteristics, such as card material or Pokemon types.

There are a few indicators of rarity on any given card, though theyre quite subject to change depending on when said card was printed. A marker near the bottom of the card or near its name will indicate rarity: a circle means the card is common, a diamond means its less common, and stars mean its rare. More stars or with combinations of letters or symbols mean extra rare, including if those symbols are in the name or elsewhere on the card. Other characteristics that can up the rarity include: a higher printed number than there should be in a given printed set holographic artwork or reverse holographic, in which everything but the artwork is holographic artwork that takes up the full card artwork wherein the creature doesnt cast a shadow and any shining characteristics, not to be confused with holographic.

While rarity isnt the only factor in appraising value, its certainly a major factor: Some of the highest-selling cards worth tens of thousands of dollars, or considered priceless from lack of supply, are only so because of small rarities like misprints or typos.
