How To Check Individual Values In Pokmon Sword And Shield

How to check your Pokemon IVs in Pokemon Sword & Shield | Pokemon IV Guide

Help your Pokémon reach their greatest potential.

Individual Values, typically referred to as IVs, are unseen elements that affect a Pokémons base stats. Theyre generally hidden from the player but can be viewed in Sword and Shield thanks to the Judge feature.

This feature isnt regularly available to the player, though. In fact, you dont receive the Judge feature until you complete Sword and Shields main story mode. You must then travel to the Battle Tower where youll compete against some of the most challenging trainers in the game. You must achieve six consecutive victories and then defeat Champion Leon. This will earn you Rank 4 in the Battle Tower and will unlock the Judge feature for you to use.

Once youve unlocked the Judge feature, find a PC or go to your party and open your Pokémon box. Then scroll over to whichever Pokémons stats youre curious about and press the + button on your joycon.

The amount of IVs a Pokémon has range from zero to 31, but the game doesnt explicitly tell trainers this. Instead, Sword and Shield uses terms to describe how many IVs a Pokémon has.

Here are the terms and what they translate to in quantity of IVs.

  • No Good: Zero IVs

How To Unlock The Iv Checker

To unlock the IV Checker, you will first need to beat the main storyline. That means you’ll need to have collected all eight gym badges and defeated the Champion, Leon. Then you’ll have to come back to the Battle Tower and battle random NPCs until you face off against Leon. Beating him unlocks the Judge function in the Rotom PC. At this point, you’ll be able to access the IV Checker by merely going into your Pokemon boxes.

While you’re hovering over a Pokémon in your Box, press the + button, and you can see their IVs score next to their HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed stats. Here’s what those ratings mean:

  • Fantastic: 30
  • Best: 31

You want Pokémon that mostly have Fantastic and Best IV scores. Note that anything marked “Best” cannot be improved any further. If your Pokémon’s stats are weak, you might want to work on improving them with Mints.

A Note About Competitive Pokemon Formats

The first thing players need to consider is what kind of competitive format they wish to participate in. In general, there are two main formats: One officially endorsed by The Pokemon Company, and the unofficial casual competitive format.

The official tournament format sponsored by Nintendo and The Pokemon Company is the Video Game Championship Series. The main focus of the VGC is a double battles format that is tiered based on your age bracket. Players participating in VGC can also earn enough points for the Video Game World Championships, the international championship finals, and are subject to various rule changes such as banned Pokemon in some seasons.

The unofficial competitive format is known as Smogon, one of the longest fan-run competitive formats in Pokemon. Smogon follows single battle format with tier listings, where it lists each Pokemon in various tiers of play for fair matchups. Smogon is also involved in banning or limiting several Pokemon and strategies, such as banning Baton Pass strategies or certain Mega-Evolutions in previous generations.

How To Unlock The Iv Checker In Pokemon Sword And Shield

Pokemon Sword and Shield include a way to see the Individual Values of a Pokemon just by looking at it in your box. IVs are a set of hidden stats that affect each individual Pokemon’s base stats, which is what each Pokemon’s stats unique, and why they’re such an important factor in strong Pokemon. This page covers how IVs work and how to unlock an IV checker, or IV judge, in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword And Shield

IVs, or Individual Values, are hidden variables that ultimately determine a Pokemon’s own unique stats. They are innate to a Pokemon and, for a long time, couldn’t be changed however, you can “hyper train” Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield in order to increase their IVs past their supposed cap.

To check IVs in Pokemon Sword and Shield, you’ll need to have already beaten Leon. On top of that, you need to win at least six matches in the Battle Tower, located at the northernmost point of Wyndon.

After this, simply visit a Rotom PC in any Pokemon Centre and check your boxes as you normally would. When you press the “+” button to check their stats now, however, you’ll see a word as opposed to a number that is relatively arbitrary to those not 100% in the know. What you want to see here is the word “Best,” which implies that the Pokemon in question has the maximum amount of IVs for its species.

Again, you can hyper train Pokemon past this cap by speaking to the relevant NPC in the Wyndon Battle Tower, so even if your Pokemon doesn’t have great stats to begin with, you can always raise their IVs here and again, it only really matters if you’re super into competitive play.

How To Check A Pokmon’s Ivs Using An Iv Calculator

An IV Calculator of which there are many can give you an accurate reading of your Pokémon’s IVs, its level, and the power of its skills. It achieves this by looking at your Trainer Level, the Pokémon’s CP , and the amount of Stardust required to power it up.

This provides a rough estimate, which increases in accuracy the higher the level of your Pokémon. You can also combine this with an Appraisal to get a more accurate reading.

IV Calculators, much like cars, come in two different flavours: automatic and manual. Automatics scan a screenshot of your Pokémon and calculate its IVs based on that, while manual requires you to input the information yourself.

The automatic method is not only the fastest but the most foolproof, as getting the IV range in the correct position can be particularly tough. If that’s the method you want to go for, you’ll need to download an app on your mobile. Here are our favourites:

How To Check Ivs In Pokemon Sword And Shield

For total beginners, EVs and IVs are values that impact on your Pokemon’s stats and also how they can improve. IVs are individual values, and they directly affect your stats and your battle performance directly. You can pass on desirable IVs through breeding, and you can also ensure that you end up with a Pokemon that’s tailored to your dream team.

It’s easy to check your IVs in Pokemon Sword and Shield, but you’re going to have to have become the Champion and cleared the story of the game. Once you’ve done so, you’re going to be able to unlock the Battle Tower, which is coincidentally a place that you can also earn battle points to purchase items like the Razor Claw to help you evolve certain Pokemon or to make you better in competitive.

You check your IVs via something called the IV Checker, and you can only get this after you’ve won 6 times in the Battle Tower. You’ll face off against Leon at this point, which will then give you the chance to bump your Battle Tower rank to 4 once you’re victorious – this will unlock the IV checker which you can access via the Pokemon Box. All you have to do is read them off from that menu, which is pretty simple.

How To Check A Pokmon’s Ivs In Pokmon Go

The first stage of checking a Pokémon’s IVs is to have them appraised by your Team Leader. To do so, tap on the Pokéball, tap on Pokémon, then on the Pokémon you want appraised. Now, tap the three lines on the bottom right of the screen and hit Appraise.

Your Team Leader will now give you a bunch of cryptic clues as to the Pokémon’s IVs. The first set of clues relate to a Pokémon’s IV Range, which is the score out of 100 for a Pokémon’s potential. A score of 100 means that your Pokémon has a maximum score of 15 for each of its IVs.

This is what those clues mean:

Valor
It’s stats don’t point to greatness in battle. Its stats are not out of the norm, in my opinion. Its stats are all right, but kinda basic, as far as I can see. 0 – 7

Unless you clearly have a max IV score of 15 for all three stats, this appraisal system merely gives you a rough estimate of your Pokémon’s total IVs. It’s a good place to start though, as you sort out the wheat from the chaff. Then you can go on to getting the exact IVs using an IV Calculator if you deem the Pokémon worthy.

Pokemon Sword and Shield bring back the Individual Value mechanics just like in the previous Pokemon games. Keep in mind that IVs are different from Effort Values but both these mechanics play a part in how strong your Pokemon can get. For more information on Effort Values, check out our EV Guide.

You typically cannot see your IVs, unlike your EVs. They are randomized when you catch or acquire your Pokemon. A Pokemon can have a maximum of 31 IVs on one stat.
