Con: Repackaged Packs Are Guaranteed To Have Worse Cards Than Official Boosters
The biggest drawback to repackaged cards is that youre never going to find the most sought-after cards from repackaged sets. Any packs that dont explicitly state that they have rares or holos in it simply wont. You arent going to find any hidden gems of any monetary value here either, as those got picked clean by someone along the repackaging chain long before it got to you.
Even when you buy the packs that advertise having holos and rare cards, youre still getting the least valuable versions of those. You will never get the ultra rare cards or secret rare cards that everyone clamors for from repackaged sets. For those chasing the most desirable cards, these are literally a waste of time.

Blastoise 1st Edition Shadowless Base Set
- Release Date: 1999
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $45,100
Not only is Blastoise one of the most beloved characters in the Game Freak RPG, but the Water-type starter has also become one of the most valuable Pokemon cards currently on the market.

While its 1st Edition Shadowless Pokemon card from 1999 has always brought in good money, the popular item has seen a massive jump in value recently. In a PWCC auction held in November 2020, the rare Base Set Blastoise sold for $45,100.

How Do You Spot A Fake Pokmon Card
Counterfeit Pokémon cards have many elements that give them away. Before you try selling a suspicious-looking Pokémon card, check the quality of the card stock, the printing colors and effects, the shape and size of the text and the neatness of the cards borders. When in doubt, compare your card with others you own that are 100% original.

Daisuki Club Holo Masters Scroll Promo
- Release Date: 2010
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $35,200
In Japan, fans were able to sign up for the Pokemon Daisuki Club. The organization would offer players unique promotions to score limited-edition merchandise. One of those campaigns was for the Pokemon Trading Card Game in 2010.
Fans signed up to the club were able to complete various activities to earn points which could then be exchanged for a special reward. At the very top of the prize pool was the extremely limited Masters Scroll Pokemon card promo which required a whopping 8,600 points to unlock.
Due to the difficulty of obtaining the collectible and its overall scarcity, the gorgeous gold spreckled holographic has become one of the rarest promotional items in the TCGs 25-year history. So its not often that one of these goes up for sale.
Its not surprising that collectors went wild when a Master Scroll promo appeared at a November 2021 PWCC auction. The Daisuki Club promo ended up fetching $35,200 from bidders. The rare collectible will no doubt have great potential to grow in price in the future given how little of them actually exist.

How Do You Get Expensive Pokemon Cards
Independent game and card shops will buy and sell used Pokémon cards. This is the perfect way to peruse a library of cards and purchase just the individual cards that you want. Particularly rare cards will be quite expensive due to their high demand. Trade in a few cards that you dont want to offset the high price.
Check For Valuable Characteristics
Not all cards with the rare symbol are equally rare, with some rare cards being rarer than others.
Other characteristics of a card such as whether its a holofoil or non-holofoil card or if its a card with special abilities, can make it rarer and more valuable.
An easy way to find valuable Pokémon cards is to look for holo cards.
Sometimes these are called:
There are a few different types of Holo Pokémon cards:
- Holo: The Pokémon image is holofoil
- Reverse Holo: The frame around is holofoil, but the Pokémon image itself is not.
- Full Art Holo: The entire card is covered in holofoil graphics.

Crystal Charizard Holo Skyridge
- Release Date: 2003
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $25,100
In 2003, interest in Pokemon cards had started to wane among core fans who had been collecting since it launched in 1999. As a result, production of the Skyridge set was considerably lower compared to past expansions.
This would also be the last release printed by Wizards of the Coasts and features the iconic e-reader designs meant to be a tie-in for the Game Boy Advance. Its low production has made the retro set one of the most expensive Pokemon cards products to hunt down from the era.
The crown jewel of the expansion is none other than Charizard. Its rare Crystal Holo design variant was extremely limited even at release. In November 2020, a perfectly graded version of the collectible sold for $25,100 at auction.
Tournament And Promo Cards
Not all Pokemon cards come from booster packs. Some of the rarest Pokemon cards were only given out as tournament prizes or promotional giveaways. These cards usually bear a stamp on the art to identify where they came from or have a special promo star in the bottom corner, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for these sorts of markings on your cards.
Some of these special cards were quite commonplace back in the day–such as the promotional Mew card given out in 1999 to those who bought tickets for Pokemon: The First Movie– so theyre not worth more than a few dollars now.

But some, like the 2011 and 2012 Tropical Beach card from the Pokemon World Championships, can easily fetch hundreds of dollars.

Look For Rare Pokemon Cards
Some cards could be worth more than others because they have unique features like holofoil or a special symbol. Other cards may not have many copies.
Heres how to identify rare Pokemon cards.
To determine how common or uncommon a card is, you can look for rarity symbols.
Most Pokemon cards have one of three rarity symbols:
- Diamonds: Semi-rare
- Circles: Common
Cards with a star icon on the back are the rarest and can be worth the most money. You will want to pay closer attention to these rare cards and look for additional special features that add value.
If you collected Pokemon cards as a kid, you likely got excited when a pack of cards contained a holofoil card. They just looked cooler than all the other cards.
Now theres another reason to be excited about holofoil cards. These cards are more valuable than a standard card thats ink-only. The entire Pokemon image may be holographic or only the reverse side.
Certain card series have rare letters stamped on the front.
Some examples include these stamped letters:
These letter stampings can be for recent releases with the United States version of the Sun & Moon set launching in 2016.
Some cards may have a secret number that is higher than the actual number. For example, you might have card number 123 of 100 printed cards.
It can be worth your time to have a professional card grader verify the authenticity and condition of rare cards.

Random: Man Steals Pokmon Cards Then Stupidly Tries To Sell Them Back

A man has been arrested after attempting to sell Pokémon cards back to the very same trading card store he robbed just one month prior.
On August 9th, 2022, shortly before midnight, a trading card store in Bellingham, Washington, reported that around $20,000 worth of Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards had been stolen after the suspect – Myles Vaughn Pajnogac – had entered the premises by smashing through the front door.
Rather bizarrely, however, the suspect then later returned to the very same store and attempted to sell the merchandise back to the owners. A store employee reportedly recognised Pajnogac and confronted him regarding the theft, however Pajnogac became hostile and said Ill rob you again “.
Pajnogac abruptly left the store, but left the stolen goods on the counter, after which the store owners were able to identify them as the very same cards Pajnogac had previously stolen. After providing photographic evidence to the Bellingham Police Department, Pajnogac was subsequently arrested and booked on suspicion of first-degree malicious mischief, second-degree burglary, first-degree theft, second-degree possession of stolen property, and first-degree trafficking. He has since been released on his own recognizance.

Pokmon Cards Pulled From Target And Walmart Due To Safety Concerns
The high demand for Pokémon trading cards seems to be causing all sorts of mischief again. Two major US stores are pulling their Pokémon cards, citing customer safety concerns as the reason.
After images of shop notices were posted on social media, Target confirmed to Bleeding Cool that it has decided to temporarily suspend the sale of MLB, NFL, NBA and Pokémon trading cards out of an abundance of caution. The cards will be pulled from all stores on 14th May, but will continue to be sold online.
As for Walmart, theres no word on whether the company has decided to remove the cards nationwide, but it seems at least some stores have pulled their stock. In March some customers began to report that trading cards were being locked up and limited to one per customer, and an internal memo has now leaked appearing to show that cards are being suspended due to inappropriate customer behaviour .

Pokemon World Championships Promo No 2 Trainer
- Release Date: 2006
- Grading: PSA 9
- Pokemon card value at auction: $110, 100
The incredibly rare Trophy card was handed out at the 2006 World Championship held in Anaheim, California. Since these Pokemon cards were only given to winners, it makes their population extremely low.
According to PSA, only three of these collectibles are even said to have been issued at the competition. It almost feels like a crime putting this Pokemon card at this spot because due to its scarcity, it rarely goes up for sale
However in February 2021, one finally appeared online. With over 150 bids, this item brought in a mind-blowing $110,100 at a PWCC auction.
