In brief, Pokémon types dictate whether one Pokémon is either strong or weak – super effective or not very effective – against another, dealing additional or reduced damage as a result – and receiving additional or reduced damamage – as a result.

The standard Type chart that has evolved through the different generations will be like a second language to long-term Pokémon fans, but to newcomers it can appear too daunting to even know where to begin, so with that in mind we’ve put together a type chart of our own, as well as an explanation of how Type effectivness works and how to plan around it, just below.

Why Are Dragons Ice Weak

Reptiles are cold-blooded. Therefor, Dragon type Pokémon take super-effective damage from Ice type moves. Part of the reason why dragon-type is weak against ice type is because other feathered theropods and dinosaurs were based on dragons, but they were vulnerable to the cold due to the environment differences.

Historical Changes To Pokmon Types In Mainline Pokmon Games

When using the type chart for older mainline Pokémon games bear in mind that the following changes were made to the type system. These changes applied to all subsequent games, including remake titles

Generation 6

• Ghost and Dark-type moves made neutral against Steel

Generation 2

• Dark and Steel types added
• Bug-type moves made ineffective against Poison
• Poison-type moves made neutral against Bug
• Ice types made not very effective against Fire
• A programming bug that made the Ghost-type move Lick ineffective against Psychic Pokémon was fixed

Best Counters For Dark

When coming up against Dark-types, Pokemon like Scyther, Clefable, and Hitmonlee are reliable options. Each one represents a weakness that every Dark-types shares.

Always bear in mind a Pokemons secondary type when selecting your counter Pokemon and moves. While the above three examples are effective against Dark-types, the opposing Pokemon may have resistances based on their primary/secondary type.

What Are Dark Type Pokemon Weak Against

Assuming youre playing a mainline Pokemon game based on Generation VI onwards, a pure Dark type Pokemon would have the following resistances and weaknesses:

• Resistant to: Dark, Ghost
• Weak against: Bug, Fairy, Fighting
• Nullifies: Psychic

Dark types occupy a similar place on the typing spectrum as Psychic types, albeit with a few inversions: instead of being weak to Ghost types and resistant to Fighting types like Psychics, theyre weak to Fighting types and resistant to Ghosts. Also, as of Generation VII, Dark types have an inherent counter to the ability, Prankster. Prankster would normally guarantee attack priority when using a status-inducing move like Stun Spore, but against a Dark type, this ability is canceled out.

It should also be noted that the Psychic nullification only applies if youre playing a mainline Pokemon game. In Pokemon GO, Dark types can still be hit by Psychic moves, albeit with drastically reduced damage.

How To Defeat Dragon

In Pokemon GO, Dragon-type Pokemon are particularly weak against three other types. Fairy, Ice, and fellow Dragon-type Pocket Monsters have an advantage over these creatures in the mobile game.

A trainer must not forget that Dragon-types have resistances against Electric, Fire, Grass, and Water-type attacks used against them in battle. Thats why it isnt recommended to send out Pokemon assigned one of these types when fighting a Dragon-type foe.

Normal Type Pokemon Strength And Weakness Chart

Normal Type Pokemon

Among the species, normal-type Pokémon tend to look like a variety of animals from the real world. In general, normal types do not combine, except for flight, to represent standard bird species. • Ghost Type Pokemon

First on this list is the ghost type. As we mentioned earlier, the ghost type has a good resistance against the attacks that a dark pokemon is capable of.

Because of this, it is a good type to use against Dark Type Pokemon.

• Fighting Type Pokemon

If youre up against a dark pokemon, your best bet is to use a Fighting Pokemon against them.

This is because Dark Type Pokemon isnt effective against the fighting type whereas the Fighting Type can also inflict physical damage which is effective against the dark type.

• Bug Type Pokemon

The bug type also is very good against dark pokemon.

There are several pokemon within the type which are amazing to use against dark pokemon.

• Fairy Type Pokemon

Fairy type is also effective against dark pokemon. They have a good defense against the dark type and are also effective when it comes to offense.

For anyone who has invested years of play into this series, the type system becomes second nature. While in time your memory too will retain most of, if not the full set of relationships it is worth learning the logical relationships that do exist.

The classic example taught at the beginning of every Pokémon game is that fire is super effective against grass, which is in turn super effective against water, which is in turn super effective against fire. Theyre Super Effective Against Nothing

Along with few resistances to almost every other type, Normal-Type isnt super effective against any other type either. Against most, Normal-Type moves end up doing a regular amount of damage, not significant but not minor either, but things get worse when you count the Pokémon that are resistant to Normal-Type.

On top of the aforementioned ghosts, rock and steel Pokémon are notoriously sturdy and take very little damage from Normal-Type. Normal-Type moves basically only come in two forms, they either do neutral damage or little to no damage at all.

Pokémon can use moves of various types, usually those that they themselves belong to. From this table you can see whether a move will be strong, weak, or very weak against a Pokémon of a certain type. Very weak attacks are also known as immunities but unlike other Pokémon games they will still do some damage.

Conversely, this table also shows which attacks your pokémon will be resistant or very resistant to, or weak against, depending on their type.

For example, a Ground type attack will be super effective against a fire type pokémon, but not very effective against a grass type pokémon. It will be even less effective against a flying type pokémon. But a ground type pokémon will also be resistant to poison type attacks, and especially electric type attacks. However, it will be weak to water attacks. And these are only some examples for one type of pokémon!

Pokemon Fighting Type Strengths

The good news, if youre the one using one, is fighting Pokemon have more strengths than weaknesses. Theyll do extra damage to any Dark, Ice, Normal, Rock, or Steel Pokemon.

That means a Fighting type Pokemon makes an excellent counter to some powerhouse foes:

• Dark: Tyranitar, Hydreigon, Krookodile, Wavile, Bisharp, etc.

What Pokemon Is Good Against Normal Type Pokemon

Lucario

It is one of the best choices against a normal type pokemon. This is because it combines the fighting type and the steel type, both of which are good to use against normal type pokemon.

Metagross

This is another good alternative and is a combination of the steel and psychic type.

The steel type was initially introduced to counter the psychic type, and if a pokemon has both of them, it is invincible.

Because of that, metagross is also fantastic to use against normal type.

Giratina

Another amazing choice is Giratina. It is a ghost dragon type pokemon. Normal Pokemon are immune to damage from the dragon type, but it is still great to use due to its high damaging ghost type attacks.

Why Are Bug Type Attacks Effective Against Dark Type Pokemon

This question actually originated from the games, but it applies to the anime/manga as well.

Water is strong against fire because water can extinguish fire. Electricity is weak against Grass because grass is grounded, which nullifies electricity.

What is the reasoning for Bug to be effective against Dark type?

If I had to guess, it was because of game balance more than logic.

There are only two types that are super-effective against Dark.

• Fighting
• Bug

Neither of which make much logical sense. But it would be fairly safe to say that Dark would be overpowered if it only had one or no weaknesses.

Another argument to support the game-balance motivation is that bug types would otherwise be considered weak since they are super-effective against few other types.

So in short, they probably needed to keep Dark in check and make Bug more competitive.

This sort of balancing isnt particularly new. Psychic is a good example.

How Many Pokemon Types Are There

Throughout all of the Pokemon series, as you can see above, there are a total of 18 types of Pokemon. As also shown above, different mon have strengths and weaknesses against various types.

Fire-types are a good example of this, whereby they are effective against bug, grass, ice, and steel-types but weak against ground, rock, and water.

Dark Pokemon Strength And Weakness

The Dark-type was introduced in Generation II. Despite the name Dark, the Pokemon with this type isnt necessarily evil. It is just a name, and before the changes in Generation IV, Dark-type moves were all classified as Special Attacks.
