Sun & Moon was unique as the number of side characters that all got their own arcs, as well as a decent amount of screen time, was significantly higher than past seasons. After the Pokémon League had ended, all of Ash’s classmates have learned enough from their time at the school to be confident enough to go on their own adventures, and their future endeavors weren’t limited to Pokémon battles and contests like fans had seen in the past.
It was a nice reminder that the world of Pokémon isn’t limited to various competitions and that there are people in the world who just want to be better at what they love, no matter what that is.

There are over 400 Pokémon in Alola, and most of them are great! Which Pokémon are optimal for your Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon playthrough? This article will provide my opinion for solid choices for your team in USUM based on various criterion, but dont feel pressured to use any of these Pokémon. Its really up to you! But if you want the strongest or best Pokémon, you may want to consider these.
I ranked each Pokémon available in Alola using the following criteria:
- Availability When does the Pokémon become available? How hard is it to find?
- Evolution When and how does the Pokémon evolve?
- Stats How strong is the Pokémon? Can it keep up against its competition?
- Typing Is the Pokémons typing valuable for USUMs trials?
- Movepool What moves can the Pokémon utilize? Does it have good coverage? STABs? Priority?
- Major Battles How well does the Pokémon perform in battles against the rivals, evil teams, Trials, Elite Four, and Champion .
- Other Notes Anything unique that doesnt fit above, such as unique abilities or Z-Moves are kept in consideration.

James Mareanie Consistently Believes James Is A Mareanie
The joke of James Pokémon being overly affectionate with him to a point where he gets hurt is not new. His Victreebel often chomped him in the original series, with many more similar situations happening as he caught more Pokémon. The thing that makes this so funny is that he really does … look like a Mareanie, so its understandable why his Pokémon mixes it up.
Not Perfect: Jesse & James Leaving Their Pokemon
They may be constantly chasing after Ash and his Pikachu, but it seems that Team Rocket are also picking up some of the protagonist’s bad habits when it comes to their own Pokémon. At the conclusion of the Alola series, Jesse and James are recalled to Kanto by Giovanni and subsequently decide to leave their Pokémon behind.

While the pair may have had a good reason for leaving their Pokémon behind, believing that they wouldn’t be happy at Team Rocket HQ, it didn’t make their release any less heartbreaking. Its also worth noting the small improvements and refinements on previous games that just make Sun and Moon feel more enjoyable to play.
The main change that had us thinking why is this only just being added now? is that when you catch a wild Pokémon and your party is full, youre given the option to immediately add it to your party and swap out another Pokémon rather than trek to a computer to do so.
Meanwhile if you do decide to access the computer, youll be pleased to know the box management system has improved.
Pokémon Refresh, which is essentially a more stripped back version of the Pokémon Amie feature introduced in X and Y, is another improvement. After a battle, players have the option to enter the Pokémon Refresh screen where theyre able to heal their Pokémon’s status condition as well as clean it up and feed it PokéBeans. This wont be possible if your Pokémon has fainted.
Just like Pokémon Amie, Pokémon Refresh rewards your care by increasing your Pokemons affection for you, making it more effective in battle. By taking out the mini games, petting, and decorating of Pokémon Amie, Pokémon Refresh is more streamlined and feels less pointless, making us much more inclined to use it.

It’s a new dawn
Update: One year after the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon, the sequel titles are coming to the Nintendo 3DS this week. Called Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, these games will extend the story of these original titles and introduce a host of new features. They’re also Pokemon’s last outing on the Nintendo 3DS platform before the franchise moves over to the new Switch console.

Thanks to an aggressive marketing campaign and a surge of interest fostered by the mobile phenomenon Pokémon Go, Pokémon Sun and Moon are now the most pre-ordered games in Nintendos history. Expectations are high, and theres a lot of pressure on this now 20-year-old franchise to impress fans old and new alike.
Fortunately, developer Game Freak has more than lived up to this challenge, creating a game that retains the familiarity and comfort of the series we know and love while changing things up in a way that arguably hasnt been seen since Gold and Silver.
New Moves To Show Off
Pokémon moves have been given a slight change up with the introduction of Z-moves. Z-moves are essentially the Alolan version of Mega Evolutions, able to drastically enhance the power of your Pokémon’s attack . When used, they can completely turn a battle around, but they come with a number of limitations which are possibly intended to lend the move’s impact but actually do the opposite.
Firstly, to use a Z-move a Pokémon must be holding a Z-crystal and know a move thats the same type as the crystal. So, if you want to power up your Pikachu it doesnt make much sense to equip it with a water-type Z crystal.
The second condition is that you can only use one Z-move per battle even if more than one of your Pokémon is holding a crystal, a shame because theyre initiated by some absolutely great dancing from your character.
A more significant change to moves that has an impact both inside and outside of battles is the decision to scrap HMs. This is a change for the better.
In previous Pokémon games some battle moves such as Surf and Fly could also be used to travel across the map. The problem with these moves was that once a Pokémon learned them they couldnt then unlearn them and as a result they ended up placing irritating restrictions on players when building their party.

Character Actions And Abilities
S.C.O.U.R.G.E.: Heroes of Lesser Renown
Most of the actions in an RPG are performed indirectly, with the player selecting an action and the character performing it by their own accord. Success at that action depends on the character’s numeric attributes. Role-playing video games often simulate dice-rolling mechanics from non-electronic role-playing games to determine success or failure. As a character’s attributes improve, their chances of succeeding at a particular action will increase.
Many role-playing games allow players to play as an evil character. Although robbing and murdering indiscriminately may make it easier to get money, there are usually consequences in that other characters will become uncooperative or even hostile towards the player. Thus, these games allow players to make moral choices, but force players to live with the consequences of their actions. Games often let the player control an entire party of characters. However, if winning is contingent upon the survival of a single character, then that character effectively becomes the player’s . An example of this would be in , where if the character created by the player dies, the game ends and a previous save needs to be loaded.
Perfect: Lillie Gladion & Lusamine Search For Mohn
In both the anime and Pokémon Sun & Moon games, Mohn is heavily involved in the Ultra Wormhole research at Aether Foundation before his sudden disappearance. He appears to the player character as the man running the Poké Pelago but is given some form of closure in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon when he returns to Lusamine with no memory of his family or past life.
In the anime, he is mentioned several times but never seen, with Lillie, Gladion, and Lusamine all believing he is lost forever until a fateful encounter with Tapu Fini reveals that he may still be alive and prompts the broken family to search for their father and husband. Hopefully, their meeting will be less somber than in the video games.

First Some Things You Need To Know If You’re A Newcomer
“Pokemon Go” is a GPS app where cute creatures occasionally show up for you to throw balls at. “Pokemon Sun & Moon” are fully-featured RPGs with a story, a huge world to explore, and much deeper combat than their mobile cousin.
However, don’t let that intimidate you the “Pokemon” RPG games have always been casual and accessible as a means to attract a younger audience. “Pokemon Sun & Moon” do an even better job of easing in new players than previous games.
Sun & Moon are not separate games so much as they are slightly differing versions of the same game. Basically, the kinds of Pokemon you can find and catch will differ based on which version you get, with the most significant difference being which legendary Pokemon you’ll find near the end of the game.
Otherwise, the world, story, and gameplay mechanics are more or less the same. Buy whichever one has a cooler looking Pokemon on the box.
The basic concepts you might know from “Pokemon Go,” such as different Pokemon having different strengths and weaknesses, are basically intact here. You will make your way through the world, catching Pokemon to make the best and most varied team of six battle-ready pocket monsters you possibly can.
Put simply, there’s never been a better time to jump on the bandwagon.

The Alola region is home to many powerful Pocket Monsters. Only certain Pokémon can compete with the best, though. These rise above the rest.
Sun & Moon introduced the Pokémon world to many new creatures. Some of these rise above the rest in terms of battling capabilities. When evaluating the strength of Alolan Pokémon, setting parameters can be useful. While Generation VII is partially known for introducing Ultra Beasts, these creatures all have the same base stat total, except for Poipole and Naganadel.

These stats are incredibly high and would therefore make up a large portion of the collection of the most powerful Pokémon in Alola. They are also less accessible. Its raised Speed stat is also handy for beating your opponent to the punch.
Toxapex
Toxapexs attacks may not look great on the surface, but thanks to a combination of defensive moves and abilities, itll become the support Pokemon to have in your team this generation. The combination of Baneful Bunker, Recovery, Regenerator, Venoshock and Merciless make Toxapex an effective damage dealer as well as one that can hold its own in a fight.
Gyarados
Gyarados continues to be incredibly strong as it always has been thanks to its powerful move set. Use Dragon Dance to further boost your Attack and Speed stats to unleash even more chaos. Youll just need to make sure you avoid Electric-type attacks as theyll put an end to your party in seconds. Rock-type moves are also effective, but other than that Gyrados is a tough nut to crack.
