Pokmon Sword & Shield Expansion Pass Review Bottom Line

Pokémon sword: Is the expansion pass really worth it?

The Expansion Pass is a fun little splash of extra content that gives players more of the Galar region to enjoy. Key among these new experiences are the brand new storylines surrounding the Legendary Pokémon Kubfu and Calyrex. I also love having the ability to walk around the Isle of Armor or the Crown Tundra with my favorite Pokémon trailing behind me as I discover new places.

Considering how short the DLC storyline is, the $30 price tag is a bit costly. However, if you’re the kind of person that loves filling out a Pokédex and meeting new Pokémon then this will definitely be a fun way to expand upon that.

Will I Need An Expansion Pass For Both Accounts

  • Me and my brother share a console and Gamecard, but we dont want to pay roughly $100 NZ total for both of our saves to go premium. We each have our own accounts and my brother played first, and the gamecard used is the same for both accounts. Thanks in advance!zoedacat – 2 years ago- report
  • i own 2 switches with 1 account + 1 extra account on 1 of the switches.plus both games If i try starting the game on the 2ndary account the following happens :1 if the console is the primary one i get an error saying some of the software cannot run and i can then start the game as if the expasion isnt there2. if the console is primary it just starts the gameso the conclusion is that as long as the console is primary you do NOT have to buy the expasion againAzazine – 2 years ago- report
  • ups the 1. should read NOT the primary oneAzazine – 2 years ago- report
  • Is The Crown Tundra Dlc Good

The Crown Tundra puts open-world exploration and legendary Pokémon front and center, taking full advantage of the base games best innovation: wild areas. Though theres only a few hours of legendary-hunting to be had in total, its definitely some of the best content in all of Pokémon Sword and Shield.

    Is Ashen Wolves Dlc Good

The Verdict. The Ashen Wolves DLC marks the fourth and last wave of DLC for Fire Emblem: Three Houses and offers an excellent opportunity for all FE lovers to jump back into the game and maybe pick up another storyline after completion. I certainly did and decided to continue my Dimitri playthrough after.

    Worth It: Companion Feature

A highly fan-requested feature was added as part of the new Isle of Armor content, with players being able to have their first-party Pokémon follow them around as a companion. You can do this once you reach a certain point of the story content.

This feature is a throwback to Pokémon Yellow, which first introduced this mechanic, and it was also more recently used in the Pokémon Let’s Go!games. Regrettably, despite being able to see other players when you are online, you are unable to see their accompanying Pokémon.

    Who Are The New Rivals

Within The Isle of Armor, the rival you encounter will be different depending on if you’re playing Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. In Sword, your rival will be Klara, a Poison-type trainer, whereas Shield players will have Avery, a Psychic-type trainer as their rival. The Pokémon in their party will align with the kind of trainer they are, but they will both have a Galarian Slowpoke, since it’s both Poison-type and Psychic-type.

Like the harsh and snowy climate it’s set in, the final DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shields season pass is an add-on designed with the most hardcore Pokémon players in mind. The Crown Tundra puts open-world exploration and legendary Pokémon front and center, taking full advantage of the base game’s best innovation: wild areas. But while it succeeds in being another entertaining addition to Sword and Shield like The Isle of Armor before it, its weak story is similarly short-lived and its exciting legendary hunts end with classic, grindy encounters that will have you praying to lady luck.

The second part of the Pokémon Sword and Shield expansion pass takes you to the Crown Tundra, an icy mountain region filled to the brim with powerful pocket monsters and frostbitten senior citizens. Like The Isle of Armor DLC, The Crown Tundra is one giant wild area where youre given 360 degrees of control over the camera and Pokémon roam freely. Unlike wild areas before it though, The Crown Tundra actually makes much better use of the open-world sandbox by cramming it full of legendary Pokémon to track down and secrets to discover. You might find yourself solving a series of riddles to track down some legendary giants or cooking curry to lure out a reclusive unicorn. Though theres only a few hours of legendary-hunting to be had in total, its definitely some of the best content in all of Pokémon Sword and Shield.

How Big Is The Crown Tundra And Where Is It

From what Nintendo has said, it sounds like the Crown Tundra will be much, much larger than the Isle of Armor’s map. Here, players will be encouraged to explore a vast environment that operates a lot like the Wild Area in the main Sword and Shield games. Players can see Pokémon walking around and simply need to touch them to initiate a battle. As with the main Wild Area, there will also be several different Pokémon dens so players can engage in Max Raid Battles with other players online.

While some of the map does take place on snowy mountain tops, the Crown Tundra seems to be more of a balanced Yinyang. A baren, snow-covered tree can be found at the tallest peak surrounded by ice while far below it in the valley a pink-leaved tree stands proudly amid rolling green hills. It looks like players will get to explore both the valley as well as the snow-capped peaks during their expedition.

Here’s a follow-up on The Crown Tundra map.Fly locations without designated weather are indoor locations of interest. These can be compared to Master Dojo, Tower of Darkness, Tower of Waters, etc.Full map with corresponding flag names coming soon!

What We Said About The Base Game

From our November 2019 Pokemon Sword and Shield review by Casey DeFreitas:

“Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are closer to my dream Pokemon RPGs than anything thats come before. Id still like better cutscenes, companion Pokemon, the complete Pokedex, and a more visually interesting Wild Area, but nitpicks are just not very effective when everything else was such a complete joy to play. The way they respect my time is wonderful, and the removal of monotony from random encounters and other odds and ends distills it down to only the pure and charming fun of capturing, training, and battling wonderful creatures. And hey, if Im missing any tedious repetition, I can always get back into breeding.”

Wait: Lack Of New Galarian Form Pokmon

Pokémon: 5 Reasons The Expansion Pass Is Already Worth The Price (& 5 ...

It’s always exciting to see how well-known Pokémon get a new look when they are given new variants, but it was disappointing to find that only Slowpoke and Slowbro were the new Galarian forms added for the Isle of Armor.

Players had already seen and been given a Galarian Slowpoke prior to the release of the expansion, too, so it felt underwhelming for many when there were no real new Galarian discoveries to be made. Of course, fans are still waiting for the reveal of a Galarian Slowking form.

    Are There Any Version

Yes. Nintendo has stated that each version of the Expansion Pass will feature version-exclusive Pokémon and characters.

Currently, returning PokémonClauncher and Clawitzer are Pokémon Sword Isle of Armor exclusives, and Skrelp and Dragalge are Pokémon Shield Isle of Armor exclusives . We’ll update this with more information as it comes to light concerning Crown Tundra exclusives.

The rival Trainer you’ll face depends on the version of the game you have. Pokémon Sword players will face Klara, a Poison-type specialist training at the dojo of Pokémon Master Mustard. Pokémon Shield players will come up against Avery a Psychic-type user also under Mustard’s tutelage.

    Wait: Limited New Styles Added

Players were disappointed to find that the Style Card item that is given to you almost immediately when you arrive in the new Isle of Armor area was a bit lacking in content. Only four new hairstyles were added, though, to be fair, there were some fan-favorites such as ‘s hair.

The Style Card also added some new clothing options in various shops, which although were greater in number than the hairstyles, weren’t exactly anything to write home about either. Hopefully, The Crown Tundra DLC will add considerably more options.

Get Two Expansions For Age Of Calamity By Purchasing The Expansion Pass

Is the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass worth it? This DLC pack includes two separate expansions, one of which is already available now. That sounds like a lot of content, but what exactly does each expansion include? Youll get new characters, new weapons, and other additional bonuses that are sure to add hours of playtime for dedicated fans. Heres a brief rundown of everything that comes with the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Expansion Pass.

What Are The New Areas From The Pokmon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass

Pokemon Sword / Shield Expansion Pass Review

Here’s Nintendo’s official blurb for each of the two new areas found in the Galar region. First, The Isle of Armor:

In The Isle of Armor expansion, youll head to The Isle of Armor, the stage of your new adventure in the Galar region. The Isle of Armor is a giant island full of environments not seen in Galar beforeyou’ll find wave-swept beaches, forests, bogs, caves, and sand dunes!,There are also plenty of Pokémon that make this island their home, living freely amid the lush natural surroundings.,Theres even a dojo here that specializes in some very particular training styles! You and your Pokémon will take up an apprenticeship under the master of this dojo and train hard to become even stronger.

    And second, The Crown Tundra:

The Crown Tundra expansion is set in the snow-swept realm of The Crown Tundra. See for yourself the beautiful scenery of this shining, silvery landscape! In this frigid area, with its jagged winter mountains, people live in small communities where they support and rely on one another.,A certain person will appoint you as the leader of their exploration team in The Crown Tundra. Youll then be tasked with investigating the reaches of this frozen land. And remember the Pokémon Dens that youve only been able to glimpse during Max Raid Battles? Well, now youll be able to explore their full depths!

Is The Pokemon Sword And Shield Expansion Pass Good Value For Money

The introduction of an Expansion Pass is an exciting first for the long-running Pokemon franchise. Typically, rather than expanding on existing games with DLC, Nintendo would release expensive alternate versions. The pattern started with Pokemon Yellow way back when and may have concluded with the more recent Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon for 3DS. Arguably, this makes the Expansion Pass a great value proposition right off the bat.

At $29.99 for a bundle including both The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra expansions both of which are new regions the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass could be an unprecedented value prospect. Obviously much of this will depend on how long each of the new adventures last, but its crazy to consider that retreads of existing regions have previously sold for $59.99.

In addition to new areas, the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass will introduce all-new and returning Pokemon. These are exclusively available to Expansion Pass owners, as are plenty of new characters, items, and more.

Perhaps the one catch is that the Pokemon Sword Expansion Pass and the Pokemon Shield Expansion Pass are two separate entities. This means that if you have both games and want to enjoy the new content in each of them, youll need to shell out $29.99 twice over.

    Wait: Really Short Storyline

One of the biggest criticisms of the new Isle of Armor expansion is that the story content is incredibly short. It takes no time at all to complete it, with players being able to rush through it in about an hour.

The storyline wasn’t bad, per se, but it was short and sweet. Players were expecting a little more considering the $30 price tag of the expansion pass. As the story was lacking in length for the Isle of Armor, it means that The Crown Tundra better really pull it out of the bag to keep fans happy.

    Can Get Pokemon Through Trading

Even without buying the Expansion Pack, you can trade with other players or use Pokemon HOME to get the newly added Pokemon.

However, getting the rewards for completing the Isle of Armor Pokedex requires access to Armor Station, so you won’t be able to get the and other completion rewards even if you get all the Pokemon.

What New Features Are Included In The Pokmon Sword And Shield Expansion Passes

    Pokemon Sword/Shield Expansion Pass Reaction

Each expansion will bring different new Pokémon, areas, features, items and moves that weren’t previously available in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The information below comes from the official Pokémon Sword and Shield website:

    Additional Features

Here’s a brief overview of the features:

    • The new expansions will feature over 100 new items of clothing between them.
    • In The Isle of Armor, you’ll be able to find an Exp. Charm which is used to level up Pokémon.
    • Brand new tutor moves will feature in The Isle of Armor expansion
    • Restricted Sparring will enable Trainers Battles with Pokémon Type limitations and set Battle conditions.
    • Explorable Pokémon Dens in The Crown Tundra will be home to Legendary Pokémon from previous Pokémon games.
    • Players’ Galar Pokédexes will be updated to reflect the new additions – both the Isle of Armor, and the Crown Tundra will also have their own Pokédexes.
    • Both the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra will feature Pokémon Dens just like in the Wild Area in the main game, although they’ll feature Pokémon you won’t find in the Wild Area. Max Raid Battles will be available in the ones emitting a shard of red light enabling a team of up to three players to battle a Dynamax Pokémon.

Klara And Avery Are Better Rivals Than Hop

Klara and Avery offer more of a challenge as rivals than Hop ever did.

Within the original games, Hop is designated as your rival friend and leads you through a tutorial throughout your Galar-region journey. However, in the Expansion Pass, players encounter a new rival at the Isle of Armor. Those playing Sword meet Klara, a Poison-type trainer who dreams of becoming a gym leader. Shield players meet Avery, a Psychic-type trainer who also aspires to become a gym leader.

Hop was always a lackluster rival in the base game. He’s obviously weaker than you, so your battles never feel impactful. Meanwhile, these new rivals are mean. They cheat and do everything they can to push the player away from victory. Plus, they’re actually competent during battle, unlike Hop. As you make your way through the Isle of Armor, they inadvertently explain to the player exactly what you need to do in order to progress throughout the DLC. This way, it doesn’t feel like a massive tutorial that’s talking down to you the whole time.
