If players want to be a bit more active in snagging shiny Pokemon then Sword and Shield has just the thing. Pokemon Sword and Shield actively tracks the number of times players have encountered a specific Pokemon, and as that number goes up, so too does the chance of finding a shiny version of that Pokemon. After catching or battling 50 of the same Pokemon, the shiny chance goes up to 1/2048. At 100 encounters, it goes up again to 1/1365.33. 200 of the same Pokemon brings the rate up to 1/1024, and 300 of the same Pokemon brings it to 1/819.2.

The chance caps out after 500 of the same Pokemon, where the rate levels off at 1/682.67 – and all of these odds are without the Shiny Charm which will boost the chance significantly. This is just a passive buff, so players don’t need to do this back-to-back. Players can check the number of encounters with any given Pokemon in the Pokedex. While the odds may not be as good as hatching Pokemon eggs, this is great for those who don’t want to do the mind-numbing egg hatching process for hours.

Hunting For A Shiny In Dynamax Adventures

For players with The Crown Tundra DLC expansion, Dynamax Adventures are available. Chances to see a shiny in this part of the game is way higher than in the wild.

Without a Shiny Charm, the odds of seeing a shiny Pokemon in Dynamax Adventures in one in 300. With a Shiny Charm, it is an incredible one out of 100. However, it is important to know that none of the shiny Pokemon in Dynamax Adventures will be squares. They will all be star shinies.

However, players will not know if a Pokemon they caught is shiny until after the run-through is over. That means every Pokemon encountered should be caught. In the end, players can examine the Pokemon they’ve caught and decide whether to keep them or not. That is the time when players will found out if any of the caught Pokemon are shiny.

If the player wants a legendary shiny, then they should never keep one unless it is shiny. This is because legendaries that are kept do not appear in Dynamax adventures ever again.

Also, resetting Dynamax Adventures does not help in shiny hunting. In fact, it can have negative consequences such as making the player pay a Dyonite penalty.

There Are Pokemon That Cannot Be Shiny

Some players have wasted their time on impossible shiny Pokemon. These Pokemon include the Galarian Slowpoke at Wedgehurst Station, Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus, the free Toxel from the Pokémon Nursery, the starter Pokemon from Leon, the Type: Null given at the Battle Tower, the Kubfu and gift Porygon from the Master Dojo, and all of the Pokemon given by the Diglett Trainer.

Lastly, Pokemon that are a higher level than the player’s Badges cannot be shiny.

The Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon: Sword & Shield has introduced a new method of hunting Shiny Pokémon that is easy to master and rewards players with the highest Shiny odds in the entire series. The new method of Shiny hunting also comes in the form of a new adventure mode that players are introduced to at the beginning of the DLC’s storyline. This guide will teach players how the method works and how they can have the highest chance of finding a ton of Shiny Pokémon.

Shiny Pokémon were introduced in Pokémon: Gold & Silver . They are extremely rare color variants of Pokémon that can be encountered in a variety of ways. Back in Gen 2, and up until Gen 6, the base odds of finding a shiny were 1 in 8192. The base odds were eventually raised to 1 in 4096, and a slew of methods were released that would further increase those odds. The Shiny Charm was also introduced which is a key item that permanently lowers the base odds of encountering a Shiny, and it also affects the new method found in the Crown Tundra.

How To Breed Shinies In Pokemon Sword And Shield

If you’re new to shiny hunting, you’ll want to read up on the Masuda method of breeding shinies. Named after Game Freak director Junichi Masuda who implemented this method into the games from Generation IV onwards, understanding the core concept behind this is crucial if you want to increase your chance of getting shinies while breeding.

Essentially, the Masuda method is applicable when breeding two Pokemon from different language versions of the game. Any egg produced by two Pokemon originating from different languages in-game will have a higher chance of being shiny 1/683 without the Shiny Charm, and 1/512 with it.

How do you get Pokemon of different languages? Trading, of course! As long as one of the Pokemon you’re breeding came from a version of the game with a different language to the one you’re playing on, the Masuda method will be in effect. Note that you can’t use two Pokemon of the same language, even if that language is different to the one you’re playing on.

In order to make the Masuda method most effective, the best option is to catch a Ditto in your language, then trade it for a Ditto caught in another language. Since Ditto can breed with almost every Pokemon and is the main way of breeding for eggs, once you’ve got a Ditto in a different language, you don’t have to worry about anything else. Breed the Pokemon you’ve caught with it and voila, your chances of finding a shiny through breeding will be vastly improved.

The Pokemon Sword and Shield Shiny Charm is a simple concept once you have it in your bag, the chance of each encounter being a shiny Pokemon is increased. Question is, how do you get the Shiny Charm? You’re going to want it before you even start shiny hunting, and it’s not easy.

To get the Shiny Charm, your first goal is to… complete the Pokemon Sword and Shield Pokedex. Yep, you need to catch every single one of the 400 Pokemon in the game. You’ll need to do some trading to make it happen thanks to the various Pokemon Sword and Shield differences, but it needs to happen before you can get your hands on the Shiny Charm.

Once your Galar Pokedex is at 400/400, head to Circhester. Enter the west door of Hotel Ionia, go up the elevator, then enter the room on the far left. You should’ve spoken to the Director once before now in order to get the Catching Charm, but now you’ve completed the Pokedex, he’ll reward you with the Shiny Charm. Result.

How To Shiny Hunt Pokmon In The Crown Tundra

When players start their adventure in the Crown Tundra, one of the first things they will do as part of the story is accompany Peony on a Dynamax Adventure. These Dynamax Adventures are where the shiny hunting will take place, which means that players who do not own the Crown Tundra DLC will not be able to utilize this method. Players don’t have to do anything special for this method to work. All they need to do is partake in Dynamax Adventures and catch every Pokémon they battle.

Even though players can catch four Pokémon during a Dynamax Adventure players will have to choose one of the four Pokémon that they want to take with them. The other three get released back into the Raid Den. When encountering a Pokémon it will not appear shiny in battle, instead, players will have to check to see if a Pokémon is shiny at the Pokémon select screen at the end of a Dynamax Adventure. If it is shiny, players can choose to take that Pokémon with them. It is important to note that if a player chooses to take a Legendary Pokémon with them, they will not be able to catch that Legendary again in the future.

The last ten wont appear until youve completed the Legendary Adventures with Peony. That means youll need to have caught the Regis, the Legendary Bird Trio, and Calyrex and the chosen counterpart of Spectrier or Glastrier.

Only after completing all of those will the Ultra Beasts appear in the Max Lair, which is triggered by a final clue that Peony drops after completing the other adventures. Youll then be able to talk to him in the Max Lair.

How To Catch Shiny Pokmon

To increase your odds of running into Shiny Pokémon, there are two things you have to remember: how many of that specific Pokémon you have battled and how many you currently have in a Catch Combo.

Catch Combos are how many of the same Pokémon youve caught in a row. If you are hunting for a Shiny Caterpie, you should go to where Caterpie spawn and catch as many in a row as you can. Run from other Pokémon you may run into, and focus on catching Caterpie. Catch Combos stop adding to your Shiny chance after you catch 25, but doing this dramatically increases your Shiny chance from 1/4096 to 1/2048, according to Serebii.net.

Battle Count also is important. The more Pokémon of the specific species you have battled, the higher your chance of finding a Shiny will be. After battling over 100 of one species of Pokémon, your chances to find a Shiny increase by 2.5% when paired with Catch Combos. Continuing to battle up to 500 Pokémon further increases your chance of finding a Shiny. You can check how many Pokémon youve battled using your Pokédex.

The last important thing to boost your Shiny chance is the Shiny Charm. You can only get this item from the Game Freak Game Director after completing the Pokédex. You can find him in Hotel Ionia in Circhester.

Using all three of these techniques can give you an approximately 1/455 chance of finding a Shiny, which is way better than the original Shiny rate.

Shiny Legendary Pokmon You Wont Find In Crown Tundra

• Shiny Locked Pokémonin Crown Tundra: Cosmog, Poipole, Keldeo, Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, Galarian Moltres, Glastrier, Spectrier, Calyrex

Cosmog and Poipole are given as gifts as the story progresses in Crown Tundra, while Keldeo is a specially triggered encounter after capturing Terrakion, Cobalion, and Virizion.

Keldeo is actually the lone Mythical Pokémon that can be caught in Pokémon Sword and Shields Crown Tundra DLC, but unfortunately it is Shiny Locked. If you need help finding Keldeo, you can follow our guide for more details.
