Image from bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net
University is actually the perfect name for this card because, in order to have obtained back in the day, you actually had to jump through quite a few hoops that would test your Poke-knowledge. After passing a series of assessments, players were invited to play in a tournament that was held in Osaka Japan in the summer of 1998. The tournament lasted 48 hours and really tested the battle skills of the players who were there. However, it would certainly be worth it, given the prize.
Those who were able to survive and make it to the winners circle were awarded the Magikarp Tamamushi promo card, which was new and actually pretty rare, even for the time. Since the first original printing of this card was only given to the winners of that specific tournament , its easy to see why the Magikarp Tamamushi promo card is worth anywhere from $15,000 to $20,000 today.

These sets of TCG cards have a higher collector number than the advertised number of cards in the pack. All Pokemon sets have a collector number on the bottom left that identifies them. The digits on the left of the slash symbol represent the card number, while the one on the right represents the number of cards in the particular pack.
Another aspect on how to identify secret rare Pokemon cards is to look at their foil nature, which has unique artwork. Most of the packs have a special collection that possesses a lower rarity but is identical to the rest in terms of gameplay, and its collector set number is higher than the listed card digit.
You also need to know how to identify the symbol for different Pokemon TCG rarities. The rarity symbol is located on the bottom left or bottom right of the pack. Rare cards have a black star, which you will find on your secret rare Pokemon card set.

Rare cards, for instance, are split into multiple different kinds of rarities. There are the standard rare plain-looking cards, but theres so much more after that.

Master Key Prize Card
Image from bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net
The Master Key Prize card is not just known for its rarity, value or capability, but for its stunning design/presentation as well. This particular card was actually given to all the players who participated in the 2010 Japanese TCG World-Championship held in Hawaii. Printed in Japanese with a nice, colorful finish, the Master Key Prize card is known to only have 36 in circulation. Why 36? Because a total of 36 players participated in the 2010 Championship and there was one card printed for every player. So if you were there, you automatically awarded this card just for showing up. Not bad, considering what theyre estimated to be worth 10 years later.
Numerous listings for this particular card have popped up on multiple sales sites over the years. There are even a few listings that are asking $40k+ for the card. However, it seems that $25k is the more common price/value of this card in the Pokémon community today. As I’ve said these cards and their value can only appreciate as time goes by, just like everything else.
First Edition Shadowless Holographic Blastoise
Image from trollandtoad.com
The general rule is: If its a first edition shadowless card, you may have something. But if its the first edition shadowless holo Blastoise, youve definitely got something! What makes this card so special is the fact that it was actually a part of the original standard set that was first released to players in the late 90s.
So, if you were actively buying card packs or begging your parents to buy them every time they went out and you happened to obtain this card, you could be sitting on at least $10,000. Imagine, what you bought for a few bucks 20 years ago is now worth $10K at auction, depending on the condition its in. Trust me, minor rips and nicks make all the difference in this game.

Misprinted Fossil Krabby: $2200
Yes, you read that right. Krabby is the star of one of the rarest Pokemon cards of all. By all accounts, this crab-based Water-type isn’t exactly a battling superstar. The fact that one version of its Pokemon card is so rare is a bit of a fluke, as its price comes down to a relatively simple misprint of the card.

The difference between these multiple miscuts and a normal card is that part of a fossil symbol to the bottom-left of its art is missing. This seemingly minor difference has driven up the price of these cards immensely, and despite going for under two dollars in its normal state, Pokemon Prices has the card record of a misprint selling for over $2200 dollars.

Pokémon cards were very popular in the late 1990s, during this time many kids were taking an interest in this new craze. The Pokémon market would become widely popular worldwide for a number of years from 1999-2002.
During 2002, you began to see collectors/buyers lose interest and only a select few people continued to invest in Pokémon. The release of the Pokémon go app in 2016 would spark new interest in Pokémon cards again but it was not until 2020 when Pokémon cards seem to hit an all-time high in value.
In 2020, many collectors and buyers were taking a huge interest in Pokémon cards especially opening boxes and doing box breaks. This included both old Pokémon cards and new ones.

Espeon And Umbreon Gold Star Pop Series 5
A pair of Gold Star Pokémon cards from one of the most valuable Pokémon sets of all time
Sold for $22,000 in February 2021
Gold Star Pokémon cards are among the most valuable sets of Pokémon cards in existence and command an incredibly high value as a result. The cards are named after the gold star that appears next to the Pokémons name at the top of the card, which signifies that the card features alternative-colour artwork different from the common version. Only 27 Gold Star cards were released from 2004 to 2007, making them some of the rarest Pokémon cards available.
While all of the Gold Star Pokémon cards are rare, only appearing once in approximately every 88 booster packs for certain Pokémon TCG expansions, the very rarest are the Eeveelutions – the many evolutions into which basic Gen 1 Pokémon Eevee can evolve. And the rarest of the rarest are the original Japanese-language versions of the cards offered to members of the Pokémon Players Club, who could spend points earned by participating in official organised play and tournaments to obtain exclusive cards.
While Eeveelutions Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon could be acquired in the EX Power Keepers set released in 2007 via the Pokémon online store, their psychic and dark elemental siblings Espeon and Umbreon could only be picked up by players who collected enough Pokémon Players Club points. The Espeon 025/PLAY card required 40,000 EXP points earned, while Umbreon 026/PLAY was even most pricey at 70,000 points.

On August 27th, 2021, the Evolving Skies Booster Box was unleashed upon society, and the local card shops were jammed-packed.
It features 237 cards. Thirty-four of these cards are considered secret or rarer cards. Based on my research, the pulls rates on this box seem to be 50/50 one ultra-rare appears to be pulled every three boxes.
According to TCG players, the most expensive card in this set is called Rayquaza VMAX card number 218. The estimated value is $277.50 as of October 17th, 2021, in an ungraded mint example.
$800 will fetch you a PSA 10 grade. Only 150 of these exist in a PSA 10 thus far. This card is the most sought-after of this set.
The rare secret cards of this set are the best long-term investments because they are considered ultra-rare.
We have two words to say in regards to the Team Rocket 1st Edition Booster Box.
2016 XY Evolutions Booster Boxes came roaring out on October 31, 2016. Each booster box contains 36 total packs.
The pull rates on this box are guaranteed one rare card and one holo card. A highly sought-after box as one can pull a high-end Charizard holo.
The best card featured from this box is the 2016 XY Holo Charizard, card number 11. This card is a similar design to the original Charizard released in 1999.
Only 315 of these have been graded a PSA 10 example, making this card very sought after.

Holographic Shadowless Charizard: $500000
There are a lot of factors that make the Holographic Shadowless First Edition Charizard card worth so much compared to any other Charizard card. Firstly, it’s a first edition version of the undoubtedly most popular Kanto starter, which already makes it extra valuable to most pokemon fans. Alongside this, the card is also shadowless, which essentially means the card lacks a shadow between the box containing the image of the Pokemon, and the rest of the card.
This “Shadowless” effect is not a misprint or a mistake. It’s actually the original Pokemon card design, as the foiling process has changed and provided a different look to modern holographic and foil cards. These Charizard cards have become one of the prime reasons for the Pokemon Card trend of the past two years, with YouTuber Logan Paul opening one as recently as February 2021 that was estimated by auction site owner Ken Goldin to sell for upwards of $500,000.
Black Star Movie Promotional Cards With Inverse Stamp Error
Along with the misprinted Mewtwo card with the movie stamp printed upside down, there were several other misprinted promotional cards. They include several Pokémon who have the misprinted stamp on the bottom of the card as well.
Not many of these have been found, but there are still some out there that have been unrecorded. Break out the old box thats been gathering dust and find your gold mine, or it might be nice to see some old favorites of yours.
