The Buddy Adventure update for Pokémon GO enhanced the buddy system. Your buddy can now appear on the map with you, level up, go exploring with you, and even help in Pokémon battles. The updated also introduced a new item called Poffins.
The in-game description of the item is Feed this special treat to your buddy, and itll happily join you on the map for an extended duration. Normally, you would feed your buddy a Berry to get them to join you on the map, but if you wish, you can feed them a Poffin instead. Poffins will act the same way three Berries would. Poffins also cost 100 Gold, while Berries can be found by spinning Poké Stops, or from gifts sent between friends.
The Poffin will have other effects on your Pokémon, however. As you can see in the image above, not only will the Poffin bring your give your buddy a treat hearts to full, it will also double the hearts you can potentially earn. Typically you can only receive ten hearts a day. Hearts of the measure of your buddys affection for you, and the more you earn, the faster your buddy will level up. After giving Machoke a Poffin, you can see that the hearts you can earn will double, allowing you to level the buddy faster than usual.
If you do plan on using a Poffin, it is a good idea to use it on a day where you will be able to play a lot of Pokémon GO, and take full advantage by earning the full twenty hearts in one day.

Poffins Are Essential For Your Buddy
With the buddy update comes the ability to use Poffins, and if you aren’t sure what they are yet, let me bring you up to speed. A Poffin is a brand new ~premium~ item, according to Pokémon GO Hub, and it’s definitely something you’ll want while you’re adventuring alongside your beloved Pokémon buddy.
Although its not necessary to buy Poffins, if you plan to level up multiple Buddies at the same time, it could be useful to have a few in your inventory.
Basically, when your buddy is hungry, they will eat a Poffin. It satisfies your buddy’s hunger meter, while simultaneously boosting their Mood all the way up to Excited. Basically, it’s the cure to hanger, and I totally need one of them in my life. And luckily, getting a Poffin is simple.
Selecting And Changing Buddy
To select a Pokémon as a Buddy Pokémon for the first time, Trainer needs to:
- tap on Trainers portrait in the bottom left corner of the Map View,
- in the Trainers profile screen, tap the Buddy button to select a Buddy Pokémon.
After selecting, the first Buddy Pokémon, it cannot be removed but only swapped with another Pokémon.
Once Trainer selected a Pokémon as their Buddy, they can access their Buddy Profile screen in two ways:
To swap out Buddy Pokémon, Trainer needs to:
- go to their Buddy Profile screen and tap the Swap Buddies button at the very bottom of the page.
Trainer can view Pokémon they have previously set as their Buddy by tapping the Buddy History button that is located below the Trainer level progress bar in the Trainers profile screen. Trainer can also Swap Buddy Pokémon from the Buddy History page.
Trainers can only swap out their Buddy Pokémon 20 times per day.

Limited 100% Lucky Trade
Other than trading with a Lucky Friend, there is another situation where a Lucky Trade is guaranteed, introduced as a promotion to get lapsed players back into the game. The requirement are quite strict:
- One of the Pokémon being traded must have been caught during July or August 2016
- The Trainer sending the guaranteed Lucky Pokémon must have been involved in fewer than 10 trades where at least one party was guaranteed.
- The Trainer receiving the Lucky Pokémon does not affect this trade, though it will increase their own count of guaranteed Lucky Trades.
- It is currently unknown if Lucky Trades from being Lucky Friends impact this count, but there have been reports that they do.
How Does A Pokemon Become A Lucky Pokemon
This is kind of the tricky part, as theres no way to tell for sure. What Niantic said in its blog post that announced the new feature is that any Pokemon has a chance to become Lucky when traded. This will encourage players to do more trading, which has been an obvious focus ever since trading was added to the game earlier this year.
However, it also suggests that holding onto Pokemon for a longer period of time makes them more likely to turn into Lucky Pokemon:
The longer the Pokémon spends inside a Trainers Pokémon storage, the higher the chance of them becoming Lucky Pokémon when they are traded. Whether or not being in storage causes Pokémon to become Lucky Pokémon remains a mystery, but be sure to stay posted for more results from the professors research.
How does that effect the way you play? For starters, you might not be as quick to transfer certain Pokemon back to the Professor due to the chance that holding onto them might turn into something more valuable. Its now at least worth considering if certain characters that you think other players would like to trade for could be worth a spot in your collection where they can sit for a while. On top of that, if you have certain creatures that have been with you for months, those are now definitely more worthy trade bait than before.

Using Berries In Pokemon Go
Berries can only be used in two different situations:
- As food for gym defenders that increases their motivation
- As treat for wild Pokemon to alter their behaviour
Feeding gym defenders
Berries can be used in Pokemon GO gyms to feed Pokémon belonging to the same team as the trainer. When a Pokémon is fed with a berry, its motivation will increase. However, the increase in motivation will be lower after each berry fed to that Pokémon.
Each trainer can only feed 10 unique Pokémon in a rolling 30-minute time window, and the maximum number of berries that a trainer can feed to a single Pokémon within a fixed 30-minute time window is 10.
Feeding wild Pokemon
Berries can be used is while catching a wild Pokémon. Each berry has its unique effect, and these effects cannot be stacked, meaning that two different berries cannot be fed to that wild Pokémon at the same time.
These effects will only remain until the Pokémon breaks free or flees. For example, if a Pidgey that has been fed with a Pinap Berry breaks free on the first attempt, the trainer can use a Razz Berry on the second attempt provided it does not flee.

How To Make Your Buddy Excited With Or Without A Poffin In Pokmon Go
When in Adventure mode, performing activities with Buddies increases their mood. The highest level mood, excited can also give you benefits for a limited time.
When your buddy is excited as indicated by a cheering icon surrounded by Hearts then youll receive the following benefits:
- Candy distances will be halved
- Your daily Heart cap increases to 20
Getting a Pokémon excited, then, has its perks. To get it excited, there are two methods:
To make a Pokemon excited, you can either:
- Use Poffin a shop-only item you can purchase from the shop for 100 Coins which also fills all feeding heart meters for the day
- Perform enough actions to reach a certain threshold
Though the second one is free, its neither easy or particularly obvious from the outset. You must collect 32 points from performing various activities, but you cannot do them at once each individual activity has a 30 minute cooldown, with the exception of walking.

Some clarifications on the above, thanks to TheTraveller on reddit you can get multiple Battle points within a half hour if you Battle different ways and Souvenirs, Presents and visiting new Stops have no cooldown, just like walking.
Its also important to note that, with the introduction of the Season of Celebrations on Tuesday, 1st December, the number of hearts you can earn daily from battling was increased to three.

How To Get The Poffin Case In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl
Once youve decided to cook Poffins to aid your Pokemon in shows, the first thing youll need to do is get the Poffin Case. This will be given to you by the old fellow in the Pokemon Fan Club building in Hearthome City. The building is just east of the PokeMart and can be easily spotted thanks to its orange roof.
Hell give you the Poffin Case without any fuss, then you can make your way to the Poffin House which is west of the PokeMart. So, once you leave the Pokemon Fan Club building, just turn left and youll soon come to it.

What Does Buddy Adventure Allow You To Do In Pokmon Go
Once you reach Trainer level 2, Buddy Adventure introduces a series of new activities and benefits:
- You can play with and feed berries to your Buddy in AR mode
- Your Buddy will follow you on the map screen
- Increasing your Buddy level unlocks a range of perks, including additional aid during the catch phase, a CP boost, and finding items
- Up to three players can share the same AR space with their Pokémon to take a picture
As before, walking a set distance will earn you Candy, and this still works outside of the Buddy system – meaning you don’t have to have them on the map in ‘Adventure’ mode for this to work, in case you forget to fed them regularly.
You can also swap between multiple Buddies per day, allowing you to earn the above perks across multiple Pokémon.
Get Your Buddy Pokemon Excited
If youve successfully allowed your Buddy to join you on your adventure in Pokemon GO, youll be able to affect their mood by performing activities. When your Buddy Pokemon is EXCITED, youll get a pair of surprisingly powerful bonuses. Normally we only see these sorts of bonuses during special events.
