Until Pokémon HOME releases, players will only be able to trade with each other using Diamond and Pearl’s in-game trading options, located on the top floor of Pokémon Centers. Note that players must have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to participate in any online activity. Here are the ways you can trade:

Local Trade: Trade with a buddy who is standing nearby with their own Nintendo Switch and a copy of Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl.

Online Trade Trade with another player online who also has a copy of the game.

Wonder Trade: Also known as the Global Wonder Station or GWS is where you place a Pokémon into the trading system and then you’ll eventually trade with another random player and get the Pokémon they put into the system. The GWS is located in Jubilife City, however, it appears that access to it isn’t coming until a future update.

Trading Between Game Generations

Pokémon can be traded between Generation I and Generation II games using the Time Capsule feature. For compatibility purposes, the Pokémon to be traded from the Generation II game must be a species that existed in Generation I and cannot have any moves introduced in Generation II. The Time Capsule exploit can be used to trick the game into trading Generation II Pokémon back to Generation I as well, but they will become glitch Pokémon like MissingNo.. Additionally, the trade evolution learnset oversight can also be used to trade a Pokémon with a Generation II move back to a Generation I game, though it will become a glitch move. This is the only instance in the series in which Pokémon can be sent back to games from a previous generation.

It is not possible to trade between Generation II and Generation III games.

Starting in Generation IV, Pokémon from previous generations can be transferred to newer generations through a variety of methods, though none of them involve trading.

Game Boy & Game Boy Color

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color are home to Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal, with Pokémon Green being released in Japan only. Because of the unique way in which stats are calculated, alongside the inability to connect the Game Boy with the Game Boy Advance, it is impossible to transfer Pokémon from physical copies of Generations I and II past the Game Boy Color, at least not by any official means. However, you may still transfer Pokémon between the physical copies of these two generations. Virtual Console versions of Generations I and II were later brought to the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, which made it possible to transfer Pokémon caught in those versions to modern consoles.

How to transfer between Generations I and II

While there’s no explicit transfer area to bring all of your Pokémon from Red, Blue, and Yellow to Gold, Silver and Crystal, players can still trade between both generations using the Time Capsule feature. The Time Capsule machine is located on the upper floor of the Pokémon Center in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, and must be unlocked by meeting Bill in Ecruteak City. Players must also have received the Pokédex from Professor Oak in order to trade from Pokémon Red, Blue, or Yellow.

Lets look at the four types of trading you can do in Pokémon Home.

    Transferring From The 3ds

Pokémon caught prior to Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee can only be sent to Home through Pokémon Bank on the Nintendo 3DS. There are two ways to get a transfer from games into Bank, and the method you need to use depends on which game you are transferring from.

You can send Pokémon from X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon straight into Pokémon Bank. If you want to transfer from an older game, you need to download the Pokémon Transfer app. This will allow you to send creatures from Black, White, Black 2, and White 2, along with the Virtual Console versions of Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal. If you want to transfer from a different game, you need to trade the desired creatures to a compatible game.

Once everything you want to transfer is in Bank, you must download the Pokémon Home app on the Nintendo Switch . Open the app and select the move feature on the Switch, then the move to Pokémon Home option on the 3DS. If you have done everything correctly, you will have to enter a moving code into the 3DS. After this, your boxes will move onto the Switch. You can then send Pokémon into Sword and Shield by selecting them and dragging them into boxes .
