Pokemon Sword And Shield Type Chart
We’ve charted all the different type matchups for Pokemon so you know what’s super-effective or weak against other types.
Guideby Jake Green, Guides Editor
To win battles in Pokemon Sword and Shield you’ll need to understand type matchups and how different moves can be super-effective. To help make it easy, we’ve outlisted all the relationships between types below in our type chart, allowing you to know when you have the advantage.
On this page:
Why Are Dragon Types Weak To Dragon
Do you want the real reason or the lore reason? Lore reason: Dragon types are resistant to the more mundane elements, such as fire, water, grass, or electric type attacks, with their only mundane weakness in ice typing coming from being endothermic creatures who cannot regulate internal body temperature.
No Concept Of Immunities/no Effect
Every attack in Pokémon GO damages an opposing monster in the mainline games, a small number of type matchups actually result in no damage i.e. immunity, usually with the message X has no effect. These matchups are:
- Normal and Fighting immune to Ghost
- Flying immune to Ground
- Ghost immune to Normal and Fighting
- Fairy immune to Dragon
These special cases still exist in Pokémon GO, however, they do around a third normal damagerather than doing no damage at all. In our type chart, these type immunities are bolded and placed in square brackets. REMEMBER in the mainline games like Pokémon Sword and Shield, these attacks will have no effect whatsoever!

Qualities Of The Ice Type
The merits of a Pokémon type in battle on a conceptual level are determined by the type chart. It reveals that the Ice-type is actually a pretty good type offensively. It hits the common Flying-type super effectively, punishes the powerful Dragon-type likewise, and also gets the super effective bonus against Grass and Ground, threatening any STAB users of the ubiquitous Earthquake. Its offensive weaknesses include Water, which is very common, but that’s Ice’s only Achilles heel and perhaps the only one that can be put into question. The other Ice-resisting types are Fire, whose Ice resistance is a welcome counterpoint to an otherwise nasty set of weaknesses Steel, which resists basically everything and Ice itselfas many types indeed resist their own type. Combinations of the types above are also relatively rare, meaning that few Pokémon carry a quadruple Ice resistance. No types or abilities grant immunity to Ice-type attacks.
On the defensive side, the Ice-type struggles a lot more. It takes super effective damage from Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. All of these bar the latter are offensively oriented types in general, where high-power moves are common, as are high attacking stats. An Ice-type taking super effective hits will lose a lot of health, since the attacks that hit it super effectively usually have high Base Power to boot.
Why Is The Ice Type Designed So Poorly
As tempting as it may be to conclude that Game Freak have failed at basic game design, it will not be the conclusion I will make. There are legitimate reasons and arguments that prevent the Ice-type from greatness.
The designers appear to take inspiration from ice in nature when they create Ice-type Pokémon. In nature, you find picturesque glaciers and large, sedate icebergs. The creatures living in icy areas are slow and patient, to conserve heat. Standing still, hiding, or hibernating is a good survival tactic when the temperatures creep far below the freezing point of water. Real-world examples of ice in nature involves slow-moving geological features and sedate and defensive creatures. Polar predators are powerful, but patient. With this in mind, it makes sense not to design Ice-type Pokémon with high Speed or attacking stats.
Meanwhile, Ice’s performance in the type chart can be explained by the properties of ice as a substance. Glaciers and icebergs may seem solid, even indestructible for practical purposes, but ice itself is very fragile. You can destroy a small chunk of ice by putting it in your hand and then doing absolutely nothing. Ice is relatively easy to shatter, and snow formations even more so. It makes sense for Ice not to resist anything other than itself pouring any substance onto ice and snow will usually result in the latter being badly dented or melted away. Hence the Ice-type’s total lack of resistances.

Pokmon Type Effectiveness And Weakness Chart
Our type chart presents the 18 Pokémon types in attack and defence scenarios. To use it, simply find your Pokémons type to see what its attacks are strong and weak against, and what it is resistant and vulnerable to when defending.
- Types bolded in square brackets are subject to a further cut in effectiveness in the mainline games these are outright immunities
- If a type is not listed, damage is neutral
- The strength of an attack is increased if the attack type is strong against both types of a dual type Pokémon
- Type resistance and vulnerability effectively cancel each other out on dual type Pokémon
|Pokémon Type Chart|
Bug, Dark, , Fighting
Note that attack and defence type relationships are not identical e.g. types may be resistant to types when defending that they are not super effective against when attacking.
Remember, things get even more interesting when Pokémon of dual types crop up and you have to factor in additional strengths and weaknesses.

Ice: One Resistance Themselves
Unlike every other Pokémon type in the game Ice Pokémon only have one resistance, other Ice Pokémon. This singular resistance against themselves makes Ice Pokémon the worst defensive Pokémon you could have on your team.
Whats worse is that because Ice Pokémon arent all that great you will rarely if ever find yourself enjoying that resistance. If you planned on making an Ice Pokémon part of your defensive lineup then their lack of resistances should make you reconsider.

All Hail The Wait Lets Not Use Hail
Hail gets a mention here because it is the weather condition most commonly associated with Ice-types, and in typical Ice-type fashion it is arguably the worst weather condition to base a strategy around. Whereas Sandstorm boosts the Special Defense of Rock-types, and Rain Dance/Sunny Day affect moves of the Water- and Fire-type, respectively, Hail has no such passive benefits. Its only notable properties are dealing passive damage to every type apart from Ice, lowering the power of certain recovery moves, and boosting the accuracy of Blizzard.
Thus, Hails effects are always neutral or strictly negative, unless the Pokémon carries an one of the three abilities and/or the three moves that can take advantage of it. There is no passive boost from Hail, only passive ways to avoid taking damage. And unlike with Sandstorm, where three types are immune to the inflicted damage, the Ice-type is the only type not to be afflicted by Hail. In short, Hail will be detrimental to all non-Ice-types on your team, and said Ice-types even need to be specifically tuned to take advantage of the weather. Building a team around Hail is possible, of course, by filling your team with Ice-types, but that comes with the problems associated with filling ones team with Ice-types.
Why Are Bug Type Attacks Effective Against Dark Type Pokemon
This question actually originated from the games, but it applies to the anime/manga as well.
Water is strong against fire because water can extinguish fire. Electricity is weak against Grass because grass is grounded, which nullifies electricity.
What is the reasoning for Bug to be effective against Dark type?
And Ive already heard about the Malaria in Africa joke, its not funny!
- Maybe because insects navigate better in the dark and are constantly drawn to the light, So their weakness is fire.Dec 15 12 at 17:35
- 4This question would be a better fit for Arqade, but it would likely be closed as speculative over there. VTCDec 15 12 at 18:53
- 1I actually dont agree with the off-topic closure of this. The question is indeed about the Anime/Manga. Just because it has roots in the game doesnt make it off-topic. Therefore, Im voting to reopen. MysticialDec 16 12 at 5:57
If I had to guess, it was because of game balance more than logic.
There are only two types that are super-effective against Dark.
Neither of which make much logical sense. But it would be fairly safe to say that Dark would be overpowered if it only had one or no weaknesses.
Another argument to support the game-balance motivation is that bug types would otherwise be considered weak since they are super-effective against few other types.
So in short, they probably needed to keep Dark in check and make Bug more competitive.
This sort of balancing isnt particularly new. Psychic is a good example.

What Are Ice Type Pokmon Strong Against Ground For Those Seeking To Know Weaknesses Strengths And Resistances In Pokmon Check Out Our Type Chart
Pokémon fights in the franchise’s games involve understanding the different types, strengths, weaknesses and resistances amongst creatures. Since its first installment, the Rock, Paper, Scissors system implemented by the series has become an essential part that Pokémon trainers should always keep in mind.
In order to help to understand which Pokemon types beat Fire creatures or what are the strongest against Ghost ones, we have prepared a type chart and an explanation on how they work. This chart is updated to the 8th generation in 2022 so players can use it to play Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and the recent Pokémon Legends Arceus for Nintendo Switch.
This type chart shows which moves are more effective against each type of defending Pokémon
What Pokemon Is Good Against Ice Pokemon
Charmander is a fire type pokemon that is good to use against ice pokemon. Especially when it evolves into Charmeleon or Charizard, it is super effective against the ice type and should always be used against them.
Onix is another type of pokemon that is good to use against the ice type. It deals damage physically and has a strong resistance against the ice type attacks, which is why its effective against the ice pokemon.
Psyduck is a water type pokemon with a good defense against the ice type and substantial damage dealing attacks that an ice type pokemon is vulnerable to. So, in addition to being cute, it can cause severe damage as well.

Pokmon Go Types Strengths And Weakness
Pokémon also has its own set of weaknesses and strengths. For example, bug-type Pokémon are weak against fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves. Bug-type moves are strong against dark-, grass-, and psychic-type moves. Fire-, flying-, and rock-type moves will do double damage against a bug-type, like Caterpie.
Some Pokémon have two types, which means they can have a doubled weakness or have their strength and weaknesses cancel out to just take normal damage. Rayquaza, a dragon- and flying-type, takes four times the damage from ice-type moves. On the flip side, Shuckle, a rock- and bug-type, takes normal damage from fire-type moves, since rock-type is strong against fire-type.
Strengths and weaknesses also arent necessarily just opposites of each other. Though fire-type move deal less damage to water-type Pokémon and water-type moves do doubled damage against fire-type Pokémon, this isnt the case with every type. For example, fighting-type moves are strong against normal-types, but normal-types just do regular damage against fighting-types, rather than do reduced damage.
Knowing what Pokémons strengths and weaknesses are is an important aspect of raiding and battling. To do the most damage you can, you should make sure that your Pokémons moves are strong against what its battling.
Memorizing all of that can get confusing, so heres a chart to help you out.
Dark Pokmon Weaknesses And Counters In Pokmon Go

Why Are Dragons Ice Weak
Reptiles are cold-blooded. Therefor, Dragon type Pokémon take super-effective damage from Ice type moves. Part of the reason why dragon-type is weak against ice type is because other feathered theropods and dinosaurs were based on dragons, but they were vulnerable to the cold due to the environment differences.
What Type Of Pokemon Is Good Against Ice Pokemon And Why
The following pokemon are good to use against the ice type:
Fighting Type Pokemon
Fighting type pokemon are pokemon that rely on physical attacks more to inflict damage.
Since the ice type is weak to that, these cards are super effective against the ice type.
The fighting type has three different weaknesses, but when paired with other pokemon types, these weaknesses can be immunized entirely.
Rock Type Pokemon
Rock type pokemon are another type that is good to use against the ice type.
These also deal damage physically, which makes them good against the ice type.
The rock type is tied for the most weaknesses in the game, but it is still strong against the ice type.
Rock type pokemon have a 50% defense increase against special attacks when theres a sandstorm. This makes them very good against ice pokemon.
Fire Type Pokemon
As explained earlier, the fire type pokemon have a good defense against the ice type. Moreover, their attacks also cause considerable damage to ice types.

Pokmon Go Type Effectiveness Changes Compared To Other Pokmon Games
As you may have noticed, there are also no Type immunities in Pokémon Go, unlike in the main series. But that’s not the end of it. The immunities removed are:
- Ground immune to Electric
- Ghost immune to Normal and Fighting
- Normal and Fighting immune to Ghost
- Steel immune to Poison
- Dark immune to Psychic
- Fairy immune to Dragon
Instead of a total immunity to damage, these initially worked the same as simple resitances. Now, however, they’ve been tweaked to form another tier of resistance, with the defending Pokémon that would normally be immune taking just 0.39 times the amount of damage it normally would – in other words, type immunity roughly cuts the amount of damage received to about a third.
Here’s a full rundown of the multipliers that apply to standard, super effective, not very effective, immune, and doubly effective attacks.
- Not very effective – 0.625x damage, instead of the 0.5x damage done in the main series.
- Super effecive – 1.6x damage, instead of 2x damage done in the main series.
- Immunity – 0.39x damage, instead of 0 damage done in the main series.
- Doubly effective – 2.56x damage, instead of 4x damage done in the main series.
In other words, the latest tweaks to Type effectivness brings them noticably closer to the multipliers in the mainline games – but still not in line with them entirely. It does make Type effectiveness all the more important though, so it’s well worth getting to grips with those matchups if you can!
