Hidden Tips For Pokemon Go Fanatics

Step back out into the world, and master these tricks to become the ultimate Pokemon Go trainer.

Pokemon Go has captured the world’s heart, and maybe even made America great again. In fact, not even a global pandemic significantly slowed Pokemon Go’s momentum. With some precautions, we can catch them all, and stay healthy at the same time.

Pokemon Go has received several updates since its launch, making it incredibly fun to play. It requires you to get up, leave the couch, and visit real-world locations to replenish important items, participate in Gym and Raid Battles, and of course, catch wild Pokemon. The rules have been relaxed during the COVID-19 era , but going outside is still generally the point.

Unfortunately, the game provides little guidance on the nuances of catching, collecting, and evolving Pokemonthere’s barely a tutorial. If you’re just starting out, see How to Get Started and Catch ‘Em All for a primer on what every icon means, how to capture Pokemon, and other basics.

The following advanced tips and tricks go one step further to help you truly master Pokemon Go, use it to enhance your other Pokemon adventures on consoles, and maybe, just maybe, put you in the mood for the upcoming Pokemon Sleep.

How Do You Get The Basic Gym Badge In Pokmon Go

The first time you interact with a Gym, be it by spinning the Photo Disc on top, battling, taking possession, and placing a Pokémon on the Gym, or beating a Raid Boss that’s taken over the Gym, you’ll see a badge appear and it’ll be added to your collection.

You can get a Gym badge for every Gym you interact with, so prepare for the number of badges you have to grow and grow.

Travel Far And Wide Go Crazy For Special Events

This might not be possible for some, but going to as many places as possible will help you gather more types of Pokemon. Your home town is likely to be dominated by a certain variety, so make sure you go to new places to find more.

That might mean getting off the bus early and walking, or taking the weekend to head to a different area. Perhaps visit the family or distant friends, then say you want to see all the local sights so you can gather Pokemon, find Gyms to take over and so on.

Special events are now fairly frequent and introduce some less common Pokemon or previously unseen Pokemon – including some of the region specific characters you might not have seen. Make sure you look at the news section of the Pokemon Go app to see what’s happening.

Restoring And Increasing Pokmon Motivation

Pokemon GO makes gym training a whole lot easier

To restore or increase Pokémon Motivation Trainer has to feed Pokémon defending friendly Gyms with berries. Increasing the Pokémon’s motivation makes it harder for rival teams to capture the location.

Berries can be given to any Pokémon on Gyms controlled by a Trainer’s team. Any kind of Berry can be given to a Pokémon – Golden Razz Berries, Razz Berries, Nanab Berries, and Pinap Berries. All Berries provide the same increase in motivation, with the exception of the Golden Razz Berry, which fully restores motivation and the Nanab Berry, which increases the motivation by an additional 150%. In addition to keeping the defending Pokémon happy and strong for battle, Stardust and XP can be earned for giving Berries to Pokémon defending Gyms. A Trainer may feed up to ten berries per Pokémon before they are subjected to a cooldown.

Trainers can also remotely feed berries to Pokémon in friendly gyms, as long as they have a Pokémon defending that gym. To do so, the player must select either the corresponding gym badge for that gym or the Pokémon defending the gym , and then select “go to gym”. This will allow the player to feed berries from a remote distance. However, berries fed from a remote distance are much less effective at restoring Pokémon motivation as opposed to feeding them from within the immediate vicinity of the gym the only exception is the Golden Razz Berry, which will completely restore Pokémon motivation, regardless of the distance from which the berry is fed.

Gym Verdedigen En Pokcoins Verdienen In Pokmon Go

Complete Research Tasks To Gain Bonuses

Field research tasks are essentially a list of quests given to you when you spin a Pokestop, like, “Use 5 Berries to help catch Pokemon,” or, “Catch 10 Pokemon with Weather Boost.” Completing them successfully gives you various bonuses including Stardust, items, and encounters with rare Pokemon like Jynx. There are currently three kinds of tasks:

  • Field Research: These are basic goals with a single objective. You get one of these a day and they’re usually something simple like spinning a Pokestop.

  • Special Research: These tasks are more story-based and give you multiple goals that require several steps to complete, like catching and transferring a Pokemon.

  • Research Breakthrough: These tasks are based on collecting stamps and give you rewards like Stardust, items, and rare Pokemon encounters.

  • You can only have up to three tasks at a time, but don’t worry, you can trash a task if you think you can’t complete it successfully. Clearing a task allows you to pick up a new one.

How To Actually Take Down A Gym In Pokemon Go

Like we mentioned earlier, every Gym has a certain amount of Prestige. When you defeat a Gym, you dont actually overtake it. Instead, youll remove a portion of the Gyms Prestige. Thus, in order to take down the Gym, youll have to fight it repeatedly to remove all of its Prestige. On lower level Gyms, this requires only a couple of battles. On maxed out Gyms, this could take all day. Make sure youre prepared with plenty of time, recovery items, and bring friends along to help. Your friends can attack Gyms at the same time as you! Here are some quick tips on taking down Gyms in Pokemon Go:

  • You will only take down the Gym once its Prestige reaches zero. This may take several attempts. Note, you dont overtake the Gym. You will simply remove the other team from it. You will have to re-enter the Gym and place your Pokemon there in order to capture it for your team.
  • A Gym earns levels after attaining a certain amount of Prestige. For instance, a level four Gym requires 8000 Prestige. If you knock a Gym below 8000 Prestige while battling it, it will return to level three. If it has four Pokemon, the weakest one of them will be forcibly removed and the Gym will only have three Pokemon left!
  • Thus, as you whittle away the Prestige, the Gym will slowly get easier and easier to conquer.

Feeding Berries At Gyms

HOW TO ADD NEW POKÉSTOPS AND GYMS IN POKÉMON GO

To increase their CP as it degrades or as people attempt to take your Pokemon out, you can feed them berries. Feeding a Pokemon a berry will slightly restore its CP, grant you 20 Stardust, and a small chance at granting a candy for that specific Pokemon.

Furthermore, you can feed berries to Pokemon at a gym while you’re there as well as remotely if one of your Pokemon is in the gym. However, when feeding remotely you will have a significantly reduced impact on CP.

However, a Golden Razz Berry will restore 100% of missing CP in any scenario, so if you have extra and really want to defend a gym, that’s the way to go!

To prevent feeding from having too much of an impact, you can only feed a Pokemon 10 berries per 30 minutes while defending a gym. Furthermore, a player cannot feed more than 10 Pokemon per 30 minutes as well. Additional, each incremental berry feeding will have a smaller impact on the defender’s combat power, starting at about 12% combat power restoration and reducing down to 1%. Nanab Berries restore slightly more than Pinap and Razz Berries.

Where Is Powering Up A Pokstop Or Gym In Pokmon Go Live

Introduced on October 13th 2021, the ability to power up PokéStops and Gyms is, at the time of writing, only available to players in New Zealand.

Since this feature is currently being trialed, we don’t know if or when it will be available to every player across the world. Even if it is added to the game, then only specific PokéStops and Gyms will be granted the ability to power up.

More Berries Than Ever

We explained in our primer that razz berries are items you can feed a Pokemon to slow it down before you capture it. Updates have introduced multiple types of berries that each have different effects.Nanab Berries: Use these berries to slow down a wild Pokemon’s movements. Strategic use of these can be key to capturing a particularly elusive ‘Mon.Pinap Berries: These double the amount of Candy you get as a reward if your next attempt to capture a Pokemon succeeds. It’s a bit of a risk though, because if you fail to capture your next target the berry goes to waste.Razz Berries: Mechanics haven’t changed here. Razz Berries can still be fed to a wild Pokemon to make it easier to catch.Golden Razz Berries: Like their less shiny cousins, the Golden Razz Berries have the same function of making it easy to capture wild Pokemon, but are much more powerful. You can use berries in tandem with a stronger Pokeball to catch particularly feisty or extremely rare Pokemon that cross your path. However, don’t use multiple berries at a time since their effects don’t stack. One of the aspiring trainers right here in the PCMag Labs caught themselves a Dragonair doing just that. Feed the Pokemon a razz berry, take out a Great Ball, give it some good arc on your throw, and catching just got a whole lot easier.

Turn Off Ar To Make Capturing Easier

Capturing Pokemon with AR on is part of the fun, especially when the pocket monsters pop up in inappropriate places, but it’s way easier to capture Pokemon without worrying about aiming your phone camera. Plus, strangers, for the most part, don’t like having phones pointed at them. Why not turn off AR and relieve them of social anxiety? You can do that by tapping the AR toggle when you’re capturing wild Pokemon. Pokemon will then sit still on a grassy field, though they will occasionally hop or gyrate to make capturing difficult. But at least this way you can focus on just the Pokemon, and not worry about reorienting the camera or suffering the death stares of real-life NPCs.

What If I Want A New Buddy

Everything you need to know about Pokemon Go

To replace your Buddy, click on the Trainer avatar picture on the main screen, then tap the Pokemon Buddy on the Trainer profile screen. After that, tap the Swap icon on the lower right. You’ll get a message that asks if you’re absolutely sure you want to swap buddies. Tap Yes, if you’re a fair weather friend. But beware you’ll lose any progress you have made if with your Buddy if you swap too soon! You’ll want to swap Pokemon Buddies out after walking the full distance for a Candy. Also, you should not evolve your Buddy, at least not until after you’re done walking and collecting Candy for it. When you evolve your Pokemon, that creature’s Candy resets. So, to repeat: Do. Not. Evolve. Your. Buddy. Wait until you got enough Candy, then evolve.

Earning Items At Gyms

While not originally the case, you can now earn items from gyms. When visiting a gym, you’ll see a disc that looks similar to Pokestop in the top left. Tap it and then you’ll be able to spin it just as you would a Pokestop. The amount of items earned will vary depending on a few factors:

  • Default: 2-3 items
  • If your team owns the gyms: 1-2 additional items
  • Bronze badge: 1 additional item
  • Silver badge: 2 additional items
  • Gold badge: 3 additional items

Furthermore, gym rewards tend to skew towards combat items such as potions and revives more than regular Pokestops.

Lastly, a Pokemon Go Plus will spin a gym’s disc, though this was initially not the case when gym discs were first introduced.

Earning Pokecoins From Gyms

Earning PokeCoins from gyms is the only way to get coins without having to pay for them. You earn coins by having a Pokemon defending a gym for a period of time. After defending and upon returning to you, your Pokemon will bring along with it the coins it earned from defending.

  • You will receive 1 PokeCoin for every 10 minutes your Pokemon defended a gym
  • You can earn 50 PokeCoins every day , which requires 8 hours and 20 minutes of defending time.
  • This limit cannot be broken even if using multiple Pokemon in multiple gyms, or having a gym defended for multiple days.

This is critical to fully understand as it is your only source of PokeCoins in the game. Ideally, you regularly spread your Pokemon around multiple gyms where they will not likely stay for multiple days straight but will last for enough time to be worth the effort.

Motivation Reduction For Battles

Motivation loss in a battle is straightforward:

  • After one Pokemon defending a gym loses, it will lose approximately 28% of its max CP.
  • After a second loss, it will lose another 28% max CP.
  • After a third loss, its motivation drops to zero, and the Pokemon is knocked out of the gym.
  • If a defending Pokemon wins, the attacking Pokemon flees, or the attacker times out of the battle, the defending Pokemon loses ~1.6% of its max CP.

How To Control A Gym

Pokemon Go – How to Battle Fight – Gyms Explained – Tutorial Guide Tips Tricks

To become a Gym leader youll have to take over an enemy Gym by depleting its Prestige. The next step is finding the appropriate Gym to challenge. Take a look at your Pokemon, then find a Gym that your team could feasibly defeat. Youre not going to want to take a 117 CP Paras to fight a 1000+ CP Pokemon.

Each Gym will have a different number of trainers, and the first trainers you encounter will have the Pokemon with the lowest CP. The number of trainers at each Gym is dependent on the Gyms Prestige level. As you defeat them, youll lower the Gyms Prestige and kick out the trainers in the Gym as you hit Prestige benchmarks.

After you defeat every trainer in the Gym, the Gym kicks you out. Keep challenging the Gym and youll be able to drain the Prestige to zero. Once that team is kicked out, the Gym turns grey and you’ll be able to claim the Gym as your own. Congratulations! If you claim it first, you get to be the Gym Leader. You will maintain your new Gym Leader status as long as your Pokemon has the highest CP in the gym.

What Are The Best Defenders For Gyms

The best Pokémon for gyms are ones with high defense. This means Blissey and Snorlax are some of the best tanks to plop in there, but you also dont want a slew of normal-type Pokémon in one gym. Mix it up so it makes it harder for other trainers to defeat you and your allies quickly. According to Game Press, other good gym defenders include Metagross, Drifblim, Togekiss, and Milotic.

Legendary and Mythical Pokémon cannot be placed in gyms.
