Magneton is certainly one of the more unusual-looking of all Pokémon.

Summer Battle Road Mew Victory Orb Trophy
- Release Date: 1999
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $60,000
The second tournament Trophy Pokemon card on the list, the Mew Victory Orb Trophy was given out during the 1998 Summer Battle Road competition. Spanning nine regions across Japan, only the top three Trainers in each bracket scored the rare Pokemon card.
According to PSA, only 16 of them have been given the coveted Gem Mint 10 score. One of these pristine collectibles popped up at a PWCC auction in December 2020 and ended with 51 bids for a final price of $60,000. It even came with the original plaque handed out at the finals.
As we dive deeper into this list, prepare to see more of these trophy Pokemon cards dominating the top spot. Since they were awarded at tournaments, they are intricately more scarce population-wise, and thus more valuable.
Is It Worth Grading Japanese Pokmon Cards
Japanese Pokemon cards can be worth more money than their English counterparts. This is because Pokemon trading cards from Japan are of higher quality and still come with first edition markings. In addition, since Japanese Pokemon cards were launched earlier, some were full of controversy, making them even more valuable and sought after by collectors.

Pokemon Portuguese First Edition Charizard
Sold in April, 2021 for $44,850
Only two Portuguese first edition Charizards have ever been graded PSA 10 out of the 34 submitted to PSA as of this writing.
Given how the market for Pokemon cards has soared recently and the scarcity of this card in PSA 10 condition, Im surprised this didnt sell for an even higher price.
Still, $44,850 is impressive and speaks to the strength of the Pokemon brand and the Charizard character, in particular.

First Edition Holographic Charizard
Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $24,000
The #4 Charizard is by far the most desirable of all the first edition Pokémon cards.
Charizard made its first appearance in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games released for the Nintendo Game Boy and Game Boy Color back in the mid-90s and trainers have been relying on the character’s overpowering fire and flying abilities to win battles ever since.
Just how powerful are its fire abilities?
Well, simply refer to the bottom of the card’s front and you can see that Charizard is capable of melting boulders and starting forest fires with ease.
Charizard’s appeal as a dragon and one of the more rare cards certainly adds to its popularity but I think where this card gets an extra boost in value comes from the fact that Charizard appeared on the cover art of the Pokémon Red video game:
That additional exposure greatly increased the character’s notoriety and has driven up the value of this card similar to the effect we see with the Garbage Pail Kids card, Adam Bomb, and its status as the original cover art for that series.
Regardless of why this card is so popular, its value will continue to soar just like the lovable flying dragon creature itself.
Pokmon Skyridge Hologram Charizard #146 $4150
The newest card to make the list, the 2003 Skyridge Hologram Charizard has seen a massive rise since May 2020. Back then a PSA 10 sold for under $3,000.00. By June 2020, they were well over $7,000.00. In November 2020, the new record sale was $28,100.00. Since then, they have come back down and the market has cooled off some with the last sale of $18,600.00. The PSA 9 topped out at $9,000.00 in December 2020 and has come back down to sales in the $5,000.00 range. 365 days ago, a PSA 9 was under $1,500.00, so its still up 3x since August 2020.
Pokmon Game #2 Blastoise Holo
Average Value in PSA 10: $5,977
If the fire-breathing Charizard and hydro-pumping Blastoise had a popularity contest, the latter is apt to put up a fight but come in second. This fact is reflected in the PSA 10 values of Blastoise, figures that entrench the water-type Pokémon as the second most valuable card of the set. You can probably guess what card comes in first. More on that further down.
English Neo Destiny 1st Edition Shining Charizard #107 $3049
The 2002 Neo Destiny 1st Edition Shining Charizard is a masterpiece. Charizard itself is the hologram, which makes it the most unique card on this list of Charizards. With the largest PSA 10 population of all the cards on the list, its fitting for the Shining Zaard first entry. 1 year ago, a PSA 10 was valued around $8,600.00 and by September it has been a steady $14,000.00 and up to obtain.

Lugia 1st Edition Neo Genesis
- Release Date: 2000
- Grading: BGS Pristine 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $144,300
Similar to Mewtwo, Lugia was an iconic Legendary for many children who grew up with the series in the 00s. So it should come as no surprise that its debut as a Pokemon card was a major hit.
While a 1st Edition Lugia broke records by selling for a mind-blowing $129,000 in 2020, a Beckett graded 10 version of the item sold for $144,300 at a PWCC auction in May 2021. BGS grades a lot harder than PSA, making this pristine Pokemon card one of only three in the entire world.

Sold in March 2021, for $35,200
This holographic Masters Scroll card is one of several item cards that were part of the L-P Promotional cards released between September 2009 and August 2010.
Once a player accumulated 8,600 action points, he or she would earn the Master Rank distinction and a prize in the form of this Masters Scroll card.

Pokmon Japanese Topsun Blue Back No Number Charizard $98850
When it comes to original Pokémon cards, the 1995 Topsun set is the pinnacle. This No Number PSA 10 Charizard is a POP 1, and warranted such a sale due to its rarity and originality. The Topsun Blue and Green Back Charizards are the rookie card for Zard and will command premium money due to ultra low populations and massive demand. The difference between the Blue & Green Backs is the Blue Back Charizards are much more rare and the ones with no number on them are the rarest Charizards to be produced. There have only been 4 total No Number Blue Back Charizards graded with PSA.
Pokemon Japanese Champions League
Sold in April, 2021 for $30,000
Beginning in 2000, Champions League and Battle Roads tournaments offered contestants throughout Japan the opportunity to battle it out amongst the best of the best.
In 2000 and 2001, there were two Champions League tournaments, one in the Spring and another in the Summer.
From 2002 to 2006, however, there was a reduction to just one Champions League tournament per year.
And before the 2005 tournament held in Tokyo, no trainers received any kind of promotional card.
However, the top four ranking players in each age division of the 2005 tournament received this promotional stadium card, making it the first Champions League promo stadium card.

Pokmon Game #1 Alakazam Holo
Average Value in PSA 10: $2,230
The magical Alakazam starts off the group. And though this card is less desirable than, lets say, Blastoise, it still commands figures in the $2k range for examples in PSA 10. Like the other 15 holographic cards, Alakazam suffers from condition issues right out of the pack.
Pokemon World Championships Number 2 Trainer
Sold in February, 2021 for $110,000
From Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 20, 2006, the best of the best battled at the World Championships held at the Hilton Anaheim hotel in Anaheim, California.
Contestants across three divisions competed feverishly to be one of the top 32 players from each division to advance to the finals on Sunday to crown a champion.
Those who finished in second place received this number 2 trainer card which features a fantastic image of Pikachu holding a silver cup trophy.
The official 2006 Pokemon World Championships logo rests in the bottom-right corner, adding a nice touch to an already impressive-looking card.

Top First Edition Pokemon Cards: Summary
As you can see, the best first edition Pokémon cards contain some of the biggest names, and theres a distinct preference for the 1999 set. Most of the shiny cards have been long forgotten, and PSA 10 graded shadowless versions often have fewer than 100 copies.
That leads to increased rarity, and the extreme prices were seeing this year. Its only expected to continue as time goes by.
Theres been a massive influx of interest in the hobby in recent months, probably fueled by the record-breaking Charizard purchase for the most part.
For the best investments, its hard to beat the original 151, or exceptional cards such as the Neo Genesis 1st Edition Holo Lugia.
Top Tips In This Article
Scott Pratte, our expert card trader and collector, provided lots of tips to make money selling Pokemon cards. Here is his best advice:
- First edition or New Edition? All kidding aside, we know that you know New Edition is a boy band from the 70s and 80s. Still, you need to know what you have in that box of Pokemon cards. In other words, which are the rare cards and which are not. Do you have one of the original holographic cards? Cha-ching.
- Whats the condition of your cards? If theyve been under the bed in a box so light didnt fade them or the dog didnt get to them, you may be in good shape. Never taken out of the wrapper? More cha-ching. That is whats called mint. All cards in good condition are likely worth more than what you paid for them.
- The best place to sell Pokemon cards? Its eBay all the way. It would be great to sell one card for oodles of money and eBay has facilitated some of that. But if you want a big audience and buyers willing to shell out $30 a pop for your cards, you can rack up sales.
- Think youve got something valuable? Consult the Professional Sports Authenticator and get an estimate. This will put you in a good position to haggle with a buyer, which you should expect to do.
