Hidden Tips For Pokemon Go Fanatics
Step back out into the world, and master these tricks to become the ultimate Pokemon Go trainer.
Pokemon Go has captured the world’s heart, and maybe even made America great again. In fact, not even a global pandemic significantly slowed Pokemon Go’s momentum. With some precautions, we can catch them all, and stay healthy at the same time.
Pokemon Go has received several updates since its launch, making it incredibly fun to play. It requires you to get up, leave the couch, and visit real-world locations to replenish important items, participate in Gym and Raid Battles, and of course, catch wild Pokemon. The rules have been relaxed during the COVID-19 era , but going outside is still generally the point.
Unfortunately, the game provides little guidance on the nuances of catching, collecting, and evolving Pokemonthere’s barely a tutorial. If you’re just starting out, see How to Get Started and Catch ‘Em All for a primer on what every icon means, how to capture Pokemon, and other basics.
The following advanced tips and tricks go one step further to help you truly master Pokemon Go, use it to enhance your other Pokemon adventures on consoles, and maybe, just maybe, put you in the mood for the upcoming Pokemon Sleep.
What’s In A Nickname Change It
Changing your nickname is easy-peasy. Just tap the Pokeball on the main screen at the bottom > Settings > tap Change Nickname. You’ll get a warning that you can only change your nickname once, so choose wisely, and make it count! And make sure it’s at least PG-rated because other Trainers are going to see it.
Joining A Raid Battle
Raid battles are arguably Pokemon Gos biggest feature. Once you hit level 20, you can access raid events in which a powerful Boss Pokemon appears at certain times of the day. If there’s a raid happening close to you, you get a notification and have the chance to join. But if you walk right up to a gym, youll be disappointed when the bouncer at the door asks for a Raid Pass or Premium Raid Pass and you don’t have one. These can be gotten by going to a gym and spinning the photo disc. Only one raid pass can be used per day, otherwise, you need to purchase a Premium Raid Pass from the shop to participate in raid battles more often.

Kyogre To Counter Rhydon
Sure, Rhydon is double weak against grass types, so if you have a really good Exeggutor or Venusaur already, use it. But Rhydon is also double weak against water, and if Kyogre is on your defender list, double duty as an attacker is twice as efficient. You really want Waterfall + Hydro Pump on offense, but its such a little aqua-tank, almost any moveset will do.
Catch in raids:
Tyranitar To Counter Mewtwo Psychics
Tyranitar isn’t quite the thunder lizard Dragonite is on offense, but it’s close. Excellent stats mitigated only slightly by less damaging moves and less optimal typing, it can still power its way through many defenders. That’s true of tanks like Blissey, Chansy, and Snorlax, using Bite + Stone Edge, especially if they have Psychic moves Tyranitar resists. Pure Psychics will be hit even harder by Bite and Crunch.
Evolve: 25 Larvitar candies to Pupitar, 100 more to Tyranitar.
Best movesets: Bite + Crunch or Stone Edge

Team Time: Long Live Valor
If you’re just starting out, you may notice gyms that are blue, red, or yellow. And you’ve probably figured out that you can’t do anything with gyms yet! That’s because you need to be at Level 5. Once you are, visit a gym and join one of three teams: Team Mystic , Team Valor , or Team Instinct . Each team has a leader: Blanche for blue, Candela for red, and Spark for yellow. Not only that, each team represents one of the three Legendary Birds: Articuno for blue, Moltres for red, and Zapdos for yellow.
How To Assess Your Pokmons Strengths
As we mentioned earlier, every Pokémon in the game has individual values for attack, defense, and stamina that dictate how powerful it can become over time. If you are curious about how strong your Pokémon can become, you can have your Pokémon appraised by your factions gym leader, which will generate a message based on their individual values.
To appraise a Pokémon, tap the button in the bottom center of the screen.
Then, tap the button labeled Pokémon.
This will bring up all the Pokémon you own. Click on the Pokémon you want to appraise.
Next, tap the button in the bottom right of the screen to bring up a list of options.
Choose Appraise. Your faction leader will appear and give you a description of your Pokémon. For example, if you are on Team Mystic, Blanche might say, Overall, your Charmander has certainly caught my attention, or, Overall, your Squirtle is not likely to make much headway in battle.
While they dont offer a comprehensive breakdown, your faction leader will make a pair of comments based your Pokémons individual values. The first statement, which gauges its overall potential, is based on the sum of its three values. There are three stats, each of which ranges from zero to 15, so the total value can range from zero to 45.
So, what exactly do these qualitative statements mean? The game itself does not make them clear, but sites like GamePress seem to have figured out the underlying math.

Pokemon Go: Earning And Spending Candy Plus Pokemon Transfers
As detailed earlier, candy is used to evolve and power up Pokemon and is additionally a species-specific resource – a Pidgey candy is different to a Squirtle candy or a Zubat candy, and so it’s fairly difficult to save up the necessary amounts.
Thanks to its species-specific trappings, obtaining candy is all about individual Pokemon. You’ll obtain some candy for its species when you catch a Pokemon, and likewise for hatching – though hatched Pokemon will always offer up more candy than those caught in the wild.
Candy can also be obtained by transferring unwanted Pokemon back to the professor by clicking on them, scrolling down and hitting transfer. This only offers up one candy per Pokemon, but it’s better than a useless Pokemon clogging up your menus. Just be careful not to transfer anything useful or wanted!
Candy is spent on powering up and evolving Pokemon. Compared to stardust powering up is cheap, costing only one candy per power boost. Evolving is more expensive with the cost varying depending on the breed of Pokemon, but expect to pay as much as 15, 25, 50 or even more candy to evolve a Pokemon into its next powerful form.

How To Manage And Hatch Pokmon Eggs
Another handy way to collect Pokémon that arent readily available in your area is by hatching Pokémon eggs. You collect Pokémon eggs as rewards for leveling up, randomly at Pokéstops, and as gifts from friends. Eggs do require a couple things in order to hatch, however.
First, youll need an incubator. Trainers will be rewarded with an incubator with unlimited uses early on for leveling up, and youll also sometimes get limited-use incubators as rewards for leveling theyre also available for purchase in the Shop menu. When you have an egg you want to hatch, select it on the Egg menu to pop it into an incubator, and then start walking. Each egg will have its own distance requirement to hatch it: Either 2 km, 5 km, 7 km, or 10 km. Once youve walked the required distance, the egg will hatch. The longer the distance requirement, the more likely the egg will contain a rarer or stronger Pokémon. Each kind of egg has its own specific slate of Pokémon that could appear inside it, so you dont only want to focus on 10 km eggs at all times. Hatching eggs with shorter distances will often yield more common Pokémon, but with the upshot that youll receive more candies and Stardust than you would from merely catching those Pokémon. Note that while many Pokemon are hatchable from eggs, only the first level evolution or non-evolving Pokemon will hatch from eggs.
How To Evolve Pokmon And How To Power Up
Powering up and evolving Pokémon requires in-game resources known as Stardust and Candy. Stardust is a shared resource you receive for each Pokémon you catch, for storing Pokémon at Gyms and leveling up, while Candy is an item specific to that species – so Pikachu Candy, Pidgey Candy and so on. We’ve assembled some quick tips on how to get Candy in Pokémon Go here, plus how to get Stardust easily to strengthen your Pokémon.
In short, the more Pokémon of one type you catch, the more Candy you get to power up and evolve that species in its family, so it’s well worth catching those low level Pidgeys to get that eventual Pidgeot evolution. Remember you can use in-game radar to locate and catch the Pokemon nearby, as well as discover Pokemon Type by location using real-world habitats.

Complete Research Tasks To Gain Bonuses
Field research tasks are essentially a list of quests given to you when you spin a Pokestop, like, “Use 5 Berries to help catch Pokemon,” or, “Catch 10 Pokemon with Weather Boost.” Completing them successfully gives you various bonuses including Stardust, items, and encounters with rare Pokemon like Jynx. There are currently three kinds of tasks:
Field Research: These are basic goals with a single objective. You get one of these a day and they’re usually something simple like spinning a Pokestop.
Special Research: These tasks are more story-based and give you multiple goals that require several steps to complete, like catching and transferring a Pokemon.
Research Breakthrough: These tasks are based on collecting stamps and give you rewards like Stardust, items, and rare Pokemon encounters.
You can only have up to three tasks at a time, but don’t worry, you can trash a task if you think you can’t complete it successfully. Clearing a task allows you to pick up a new one.

Winning battles in the BattleVilla will sometimes reward lucky scrolls and lucky cookies. These items arethe key to teaching your sync pairs lucky skills, which are essentiallyadditional passive skills with a variety of effects. Each sync pair can haveonly one lucky skill.
To teach a sync pair a luckyskill, you’ll need to give your sync pair lucky scrolls to unlock their luckyskill slot . Once a sync pair’slucky skill slot is unlocked, you can give them a lucky cookie, via which they’llreceive a random lucky skill based on the type of cookie you gave them. Ifyou’d prefer a different lucky skill, you can give the sync pair another luckycookie and then pick which of the two lucky skills you’d like to keep.
There are four types of luckycookies, each tied to different kinds of lucky skills. Crunchy Lucky Cookieswill teach your sync pairs lucky skills mostly related to attacking. CreamyLucky Cookies will help against stat-lowering effects. Crispy Lucky Cookiescounter status conditions and certain other conditions. Finally, Chewy LuckyCookies teach lucky skills that protect sync pairs against attacks of a certaintype. Most lucky cookies also have a rarity, with 3lucky cookies having a greater chance of rewarding a higher-level skill.
But Wait What The Heck Is A Lucky Egg
It’s an egg that’s lucky! Really, it’s filled with happiness and most importantly, grants you double the amount of experience points you can gain for 30 minutes at a time. You can only buy these in the Shop, with Coins. Increasing Sync Pairs’ Move Level
One of the most impactful ways toincrease your sync pair’s performance is to increase their move levelthenumber that ranges from 1/5 to a maximum of 5/5 in the Potential & MoveLevel section of the Sync Pair menu. Each time your sync pair’s move levelincreases, their attacks and sync move will deal more damage. You’ll also needto increase the move level of most sync pairs to get the most out of the syncgrid .
The most common means of increasinga sync pair’s move level is by scouting that same sync pair again after theyhave already joined your team. You’ll probably find it’s pretty easy toincrease the move level of common 3 sync pairs, while rarer 5sync pairs can be very difficult to power up unless you scout them repeatedlywhile they’re featured in a Spotlight Scout or Poké Fair Scout. Sync pairs thatjoin your team during the story can’t be scouted at the shop, but you’llsometimes be able to increase the move level of such sync pairs during events.

Another great way to incubate and hatch eggs is to go for a run!To pick up more incubators, you can either buy them outright in the real-money Shop or by getting lucky at Pokestops, though they are rare. How To Train Your Pokemon
Unlike in traditional Pokemon games, you don’t train your Pokemon by battling in Pokemon GO. Instead, you raise your Pokemon’s CP–Combat Power–by feeding it Pokemon Candy and Stardust. CP is essentially a measurement of how strong the Pokemon is, and is important to consider when choosing a Pokemon to use in Gym battles.
There are only two ways to increase your Pokemon’s CP. You can:
- Power Up your Pokemon
- Evolve your Pokemon
Both of these methods will increase your Pokemon’s CP and HP, but will require different quantities of Stardust and Candy.

Lighten Your Load Throw Away Potions
If you’re anything like us, you shoot from the hip and let Pokeballs fly where they may. And, if you’re anything like us, eventually, you’re going to run out of Pokeballs that way. And if you stroll by a Pokestop, chances are your bag will be full and you will be unable to collect more Pokeballs! Well, don’t let that stop you. Just open your inventory and chuck some potions. Chances are you don’t need 99 of every Potion type, so get rid of some and you’ll get your Pokeballs back in no timeso long as you stroll by more Pokestops, or wait around for them to refresh.
Power Up Your Pokemon
Powering Up requires a mix of Stardust and Candy. Stardust can be used for any Pokemon whereas Candy is species specific. Powering Up will usually require a single Candy, but will require more depending on how close the Pokemon is to reaching its full potential, regardless of its evolution stage. You can tell how close a Pokemon is to being max CP by the white, half circular bar. Usually, once the bar is 75 percent of the way, it will start costing two Candy. Amount of Stardust needed to power up a Pokemon will depend on species and scale with that Pokemon’s CP. Powering up will increase that Pokemon’s CP and HP.
You’ll find that even powering up pokemon as much as you can, the white bar will never fill up all the way. To increase your Pokemon’s CP potential, you must level up your Trainer!. Every time you level up, the bar will decrease a bit, allowing to level the pokemon some more – but you’ll never really reach a max CP for good until your trainer is at their max level.
