The Fourth Round Rumble

Pokémon I Choose You! [FULL EPISODE] | Pokémon: Indigo League Episode 1

While kids had to accept early on that the Pokémon anime never really followed the rules established by the game , Ash’s fourth match in the Pokémon League turned its weird rule-breaking into next-level entertainment. Both the cast and audience were baffled by the appearance of an itty-bitty Bellsprout with godlike combat capabilities, which used -esque skills to evade or redirect every attack that got thrown its way. This is yet another of the very few battles in early Pokémon to feature a surprising amount of animation with the two combatants facing off hand-to-hand, since it would be impossible to make this little sprout seem threatening otherwise. Of course, the real crowning moment of the fight comes when Bellsprout finally meets its match in a tar-baby-like struggle with Ash’s Muk. Seeing this happy sludge pile body-slam his little twig of an opponent is still hilarious, making this by far one of the most entertaining and memorable fights in the show.

Pokmon: Indigo League Season 1 Blu

Nostalgia is a huge thing right now Im caught up in it, and many of my friends are as well. Little did I know that a little Blu-ray set would unleash upon me tons of great college memories. Yes, Im a little older than the normal writer on this site and I was in college when Pokémon hit the States I also worked at Kay-Bee Toys at that time. I remember fielding hundreds of questions about Pokémon cards, games and the little action figures, so much that I decided to watch the television show after class. Watching the show got me hooked to the series sadly at the time, I didnt have the funds for the sweet toys or the GameBoy Color games, but man I loved that show. And I still do. Viz Media locked up college nostalgia in a nice little package for me, and Im sure lots of memories for others are tucked away in this set.

Sun & Moon – Ultra Adventures
Episode 10

After Lusamine is captured by Ultra Beasts, Ash, Lillie, and the rest of the gang head into the Ultra Wormhole to save her. With an Ultra Beast controlling her mind, the gang must fight off Lusamine and her party to free her.

This is a great episode for Lillies character development and keeps viewers glued to the screen with its high stakes. The issues with Lusamine dont get resolved until the next episode, but this stands out as the stronger of the two.

Pokemon Season 1: Pokemon Black And White

The 14th season of the Pokemon anime, Pokemon Black and White once again saw a major refresh in the look and feel of the show. Ash’s character design looked significantly different than it did way back in the first season and the show itself now looked more stylized.

This season also broke new ground for the anime. While previous journeys to new regions would see a mix of new and old Pokemon, when Ash and Pikachu traveled to Unova, with the exception of Pikachu and Meowth, every Pokemon they encountered was an Unova native. Even Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy got a new look! This “Only New Pokemon” rule forced the writers to think outside the box. They could no longer rely on Pokemon and characters established in the previous 13 seasons. This was uncharted territory for Ash and for the viewer as well.

Pokemon Season : Advanced

While The Johto Journeys benefitted from the new creativity a new region brings, Pokemon Advanced also benefitted and then some.

The sixth season of the Pokemon anime saw a total refresh of the visual style of the show. The character designs were now much more modern and the animation smoother. The writing also seemed to have more energy, making this season one of the highest yet.

Pokemon Season : Adventures In The Orange Islands

The Pokemon Company

A lot of Pokemon fans dislike Adventures in the Orange Islands with a passion but I like it so much that it’s actually my sixth favorite season!

The season’s strength is in its originality and willingness to be different from the previous story arcs. Adventures in the Orange Islands stands apart from a lot of the other seasons by not really being set in a region. It’s set in an area called The Orange Islands. It provides a great change of scenery and storyline with Ash not training for a Pokemon League but instead being on a serious mission for Professor Oak with Misty to deliver a mysterious Poke Ball to him.

Unlike most of the other seasons, the Orange Islands arc stands completely on its own, thus is a lot easier to rewatch as opposed to the Johto and Sinnoh arcs which span several seasons.

Episode 11

When the group discovers an injured Charmander abandoned by the road, they try and fail to coerce the Pokemon to follow them. A sudden rainstorm puts Charmanders life in danger, but his trainer couldnt care less. Its then up to Ash, Brock, and Misty to venture out into the storm and save the little Fire-type.

Charmander would go on to join Ashs party and become one of his most iconic Pokemon. This is one of the earliest anime episodes, with the tragedy of Charmanders situation making it one thats hard to forget.

Island Of Giant Pokmon

This is third episode in an arc where Ash and the gang go aboard the Saint Anne, but eventually encounter a terrible storm that washes them up on this mysterious island.

The best part of this episode is that the Pokémon talk! Not in the Pikachu has a creepy, cherubic voice-type of way either their normal Pokémon voices are given subtitles so that we can see how they communicate. Its particularly heartwarming, because we get to see the Pokeémons different personalities Charmander, who was left in the rain by his abusive trainer, is more timid, whereas Squirtle is bold and brash Pikachu has undying loyalty to Ash, much like Ekans and Koffing do to Jessie and James.

It also includes the objectively best scene in all of television ever, namely when Bulbasaur and Charmander send Squirtle to talk to the giant roaming Blastoise, and he greets it with, Yo! Brother!

Pokemon Season : Advanced Challenge

If you start watching Season 1 Episode 10 Bu/basaur and the Hidden Vil ...

Continuing their journey in the Hoenn region, Ash, May, Max, and Brock had a few adventures in Advanced Challenge but none of which really stood out as that memorable. None, except for the classic two-parter that saw the return of Misty and Togepi The Princess and the Togepi and A Togepi Mirage. While these two episodes were truly epic, they still couldn’t boost the season higher than number 10.

The Song Of Jigglypuff

As a kid, I often wondered why Jigglypuff had so quickly become the secondary mascot for Pokémon after Pikachu, getting a spot in Super Smash Bros., sitting next to Pikachu in so much key art, etc. I know I’d never used a Jigglypuff in most of my game playthroughs, and neither had most of my friends. Of course, rewatching the show as an adult makes it clear: Jigglypuff is easily the best part of any given Pokémon episode she appears in, and her debut episode is among the best. She’s so sincere and yet so petty. She’s so cute and yet so cruel. You feel so bad for her failed dreams of stardom and yet it’s so rewarding to see her get angry. I mean, how would you feel if your dream was to become an international pop sensation, but everyone who listened to your voice instantly fell asleep? How long does poor Jigglypuff spend writing all her songs, only for no one to appreciate the second verse? I’d probably doodle on everybody’s faces too! Combine her hilarious woe with a bizarre version of Las Vegas where no one can stop gambling long enough to get a damn nap in, and you’ve got the first of many great adventures starring this pissed-off puff.

The Ancient Puzzle Of Pokmopolis

With so many comprehensive wikis covering two decades of this franchise’s history, there aren’t many “unexplained Pokémon mysteries” left, but this is definitely one of the weirdest. The lost city of Pokémopolis comes up exactly once and then never again, as its feature episode starts like a take on Indiana Jones but ends up spitting out some incredibly weird imagery that hovers between Princess Mononoke and Godzilla vs. Ghidorah. Mystical items summon a blobular destroyer-of-worlds Gengar and a spoon-wielding Alakazam who swallow up our heroes while hurling blows at each other, with no rhyme or reason in sight as to where this idea came from and what it has to do with anything. Of course, this episode takes place in the oddly lengthy filler arc between Ash’s badge completion and the Pokémon League, so the answer is “probably nothing.” Most of those filler episodes run from shruggable to total duds, but The Ancient Puzzle of Pokémopolis ends with a gigantic Jigglypuff returning peace to the valley, so it’s a winner by me. Frankly, I hope this truly inscrutable ancient puzzle is never solved. It’s better that way.

/10 Bye Bye Butterfree

Dont Touch That dile [FULL EPISODE] | Pokémon: The Johto Journeys Episode 1
Episode 21

Pokemon can be an absolute tearjerker when it wants to be, as a number of episodes in this article showcase. “Bye Bye Butterfree” was the first to illustrate this side of the anime, and it set a standard that few subsequent episodes have been able to match.

Ash has to let go of his Butterfree, marking the Trainer’s first experience with losing a Pokemon. Narratively, this is an important character-building moment for Ash thematically, this episode tackles loss and grief in a way that can speak to children. Also, people who grew up playing the Game Boy games might be able to relate to Ash’s decision to free Butterfree.

Here Comes The Squirtle Squad

This is the last of three back-to-back episodes where Ash meets the Kanto starters that become his Pokémon. Here Comes the Squirtle Squad stands out particularly because, well, the SQUIRTLE SQUAD. .

This gang of Squirtles wears sunglasses and wreaks havoc on a nearby town. Theyre led by a Squirtle with sleek, winged sunglasses the very same Squirtle who will eventually join Ashs team. They team up with Team Rockets Meowth to trap Ash and friends.

Ashs Squirtle arguably has the most personality of all his Kanto Pokémon , and this is a stellar introduction to its badass ways.

Pokemon Season : Indigo League

The best Pokemon season was the first one which has since been rebranded as Indigo League after the Kanto region’s Pokemon League.

This season of the anime is pure classic anime. It’s fun, features so many memorable supporting characters that fans still celebrate to this day despite most of them only appearing in a single episode. It’s also the only season of the anime to feature the entirety of Ash’s journey to a Pokemon League within one season and without question, features the best theme song out of any season.

If you could watch only one season of the Pokemon anime, you should watch this one. If you could watch them all, you should watch this one again, and again… and again. It’s that good and that’s why it’s the very best.

Showdown At Dark City

Yep, this is the episode featuring Pikachu’s whirlwind affair with a ketchup bottle. Honestly, it doesn’t make much more sense in context. Pikachu takes an odd liking to a bottle of ketchup, Scyther accidentally breaks it to set up that he has a cartoon bull’s response to the color red, and Pikachu is mysteriously heartbroken in the process. Memes aside, Showdown at Dark City is one of Pokémon’s most successful attempts at a plotline it overdosed on in early episodes: the “bad/abusive trainer” conflict. When early Pokémon took this premise too seriously, results were mostly forgettable. The cartoonishly harsh trainer had to either learn the error of their ways or get smoked in a battle to have their poor Pokémon rescued by Ash. Showdown at Dark City succeeds by expanding the stakes and fully embracing the consequences of such cartoonish villainy, as two rival gyms blow up their Hatfields-and-McCoys-style feud on a town so badly that it turns into a lawless wild west junction where the ketchup of anarchy is the only solution to preventing all-out war. It delivers the same lesson with more lighthearted creativity, giving us a meme that lives on twenty years later!
