Each Pokemon has 3 separate IVs: these are hidden values between 0 and 15 for the Attack, Defense, and Stamina stats. These values determine how powerful a Pokemon will be at its maximum level.

Not all Pokémon are equal: two max-level Pokémon can have different IVs, resulting in one which will be more powerful then the others. For example, a level 40 Lapras can have a CP of between 2,229 and 2,603.

In retrospect, its almost amazing that it took this long. Right now, people use outside apps like Poké Genie to get more granular information. These apps analyze a Pokémon’s level, appraisal information and CP in order to determine their IVs on a scale of 1-100: a Pokémon with perfect, 100% IVs will have the highest max CP available to any Pokémon of its species.

Checking IVs in-game only gives a vague idea of where your Pokémon lands, but by using external apps and websites, you can get a pretty specific range.

The Silph Road has an IV checker that asks you to input your trainer level and the visible stats of the Pokémon. After that, theyll let you know how strong your buddy is.

To check IVs on the go, you can use PokeGenie, an app for iOS and Android. The iOS version requires you just to take a screenshot of your Pokémon and upload it. The Android version will let you check IVs from within the app with the tap of a button.

Poke Genie works great, but there are times when there can be multiple combinations of IVs, requiring you to have your leader appraise your Pokémon and inputting what the leader says to get a more accurate reading.

Of course, this only matters so much. If your goal is to simply catch em all and treasure all of your precious new friends in Pokémon Go, the IVs dont need to be perfect. But if youre a player who likes to try to solo or duo high-tier raids, then every stat point counts. Its always wise to check those IVs before you make a big candy investment or transfer your precious mons to candy.

To prioritize IVs over Combat Points or vice versa has been a debate in Pokémon Go strategy, so you should also understand the second power variable to get a concrete answer.

CP is the two-, three- or four-digit sum of a Pokémons base stats and IVs, with level taken into account. While CP also indicates the strength, two Pokémon of the same species and level can have nearly the same CP but have a wide IV margin.

For example, you have two Level 20 Pokémon of the same species. One has 1200 CP while the other has 1280 CP. Lets say, they have hidden 7-7-7 and 15-15-15 IVs, respectively, or vice versa. With just CP information available, you might be missing out on the Pokémon that has the biggest growth potential among others of the same species.

To summarize, IV is the better indicator of a Pokémons true power compared to CP. This does not mean perfect IVs is the only ingredient for winning battles, though. Your Pokemon should have a strong move set to maximize attack and defense. Perfect IVs will just be useless if your Pokemon sticks to the weak basic tricks.

On the other hand, the two power variables and a Pokémon Go IV calculator would not matter that much for you if you are playing Pokémon Go just to catch em all rather than to win it all against fellow trainers.

Quickest Calculator I Have Used

This IV calculator is the fastest one I’ve found so far and works great just using screenshots and will calculate multiple Pokemon’s IVs at once. There is a suggestion I would make though, first I think it needs to show the possible cp range for your Pokemon’s level and not just the cp range for when that Pokemon is its highest possible level. Also I would do the same for the evolution cp range so you can have an idea of what cp evolutions you can expect from evolving the Pokemon you evaluate. I really like a few of the other features of this app that most others don’t have though, like being able to use the appraisals for more definite calculations and showing the amount of stardust and candy needed for max power up. Also I like that it has a full pokedex that has all the different attack options for each Pokemon, shows the best move set for defending and attacking gyms, has a list of all types that each Pokemon will do more or less attack damage to, and many more detailed features that help decide which Pokemon you want to really invest time and stardust into. If this app had the one suggestion I made earlier it would be 5 stars all day.

How To Check Your Pokmon’s Iv

Attack, Defense, and Stamina would all be at 15 with a 100% IV. All of it below that is calculated as a percentage of the stat’s maximum value of 45. For instance: An IV of 71 percent is what a Gengar with 10 Attack, 10 Defense, and 12 Stamina would have. 71 percent of 45, to put it another way.

The crew chief will use medals and a fairly simple bar chart to show you where your Pokémon rank. A Pokémon with three stars and a red stamp indicates that its IVs are flawless. It has between 80 and 99 percent perfect IVs if it has a three star and an orange mark. One star indicates 50â65 percent IVs, whereas two stars indicate 66â80% IVs.
