Are Pokemon Booster Boxes Worth Buying

Pokemon Acrylic Display Case for Booster Box Fits WOTC and Modern

The hunt for valuable Pokemon cards is more popular than ever. Finding that perfect condition Rainbow Rare Charizard and having it graded is a feat most collectors would love to cross off their bucket list. But, how many Pokemon booster boxes will you have to open to find that one card your after, or any valuable cards at all for that matter?

Are Pokemon booster boxes worth buying? The answer is Yes. If you are hunting for valuable and rare cards, then it is definitely worth it to consider buying multiple booster boxes.

Pokémon booster boxes might be a considerable investment but buying them has benefits for both the new and the veteran collector. If you are looking for a chance to make quick cash, though, booster boxes probably are not what you are looking for.

Best Pokemon Booster Boxes To Buy And Pull Rates

During 2002, you began to see collectors/buyers lose interest, and only a select few people continued to invest in Pokémon. The release of the Pokémon go app in 2016 would spark new interest in Pokémon cards again, but it was not until 2020 when Pokémon cards seem to hit an all-time high in value.

Pokemon Japan Takes Action Against Resealed Booster Boxes

Pokemon Booster Box Acrylic Display & Protective Case w/

Starting in September, Japanese booster boxes will feature a new tamper-proof design. To open one, youll need to tear a perforated line along the top of the box. Previously, you simply lifted the flap to open one.

This new method will damage the box to make it obvious its been opened. This is no doubt a countermeasure by Pokemon to combat the increasing number of resealed booster boxes making it to the secondary market. In recent years there have been numerous reports of Japanese fans opening booster boxes, only to find the booster packs contain no chase cards. This is because members of Team Rocket are filling the boxes with tampered packs and reselling them.

As we reported last year, Japanese stores began to remove the shrink wrap from boxes at the point of sale to make it obvious that box was now out in the wild. This way, fans would be discouraged from buying an opened box on the secondary market because they wouldnt know if it had been tampered with. That decision proved to be effective, although it upset some fans who wanted to keep sealed boxes in their collection. This new design solves both issues.

No word yet if a similar change will come overseas.

Which Pokemon Booster Box Is The Best To Make Money

The best booster box to buy to make money is the most current box on the market. The most current booster box is a box that you will pay retail price for and on which you stand a chance of making the most profit.

Buying anything other than the most recent booster box means that you will spend more money because that box is less available.

So, you can expect to pay a premium.

What Is the Most Expensive Pokemon Booster Box?

The most expensive Pokémon booster box to date is the 1999 first edition booster box. The very first set of cards on the market.

How much money is a first edition, first Pokémon booster box worth? One sold in November 2020 for more than $150,000!

How Many Should You Buy

How many Pokémon booster boxes you should invest in really depends on what you intend to do with the cards.

If you are collecting the cards yourself, one booster box is enough to get a good start on the new card series. The average collector is best to buy a maximum of two to three booster boxes. Two to three boxes will provide a great selection of cards and a higher probability of getting rarer cards.

If you are selling cards individually, you should follow the guidelines above, too. Buying more than two or three booster boxes will leave you with far too many unsellable cards.

If you are selling sealed booster boxes, you can invest in as many boxes as you like. Keep in mind, though, that you are still taking a gamble! If Pokémon cards go the same way as Beanie Babies or if a particular series is not popular, you are sitting on an investment that will not make you any money.

Pokemon Box Pull Rates: Not Great

Ultra Pro Is Making An Acrylic Case For Sealed Pokemon Card Booster Boxes

The pull rates on this box usually feature one secret rare card per box, and hidden rare cards seem very difficult to pull.

The best card in this set is a FA/Sylveon VMAX, card number 093, which has also been described as hyper rare.

A graded PSA 10 example of this card is scarce only 35 exist in that grade. This card will continue to become tougher to find, especially in a high-grade example.

Evolving Skies Booster Box

On August 27th, 2021, the Evolving Skies Booster Box was unleashed upon society, and the local card shops were jammed-packed.

It features 237 cards. Thirty-four of these cards are considered secret or rarer cards. Based on my research, the pull rates on this box seem to be 50/50 one ultra-rare appears to be pulled every three boxes.

According to TCG players, this sets most expensive card is Rayquaza VMAX card number 218. The estimated value is $277.50 as of October 17th, 2021, in an ungraded mint example.

$800 will fetch you a PSA 10 grade. Only 150 of these exist in a PSA 10 thus far. This card is the most sought-after of this set. The rare secret cards of this set are the best long-term investments because they are considered ultra-rare.

We have two words regarding the Team Rocket 1st Edition Booster Box.

Good luck.

2016 XY Evolutions Booster Boxes came roaring out on October 31, 2016. Each booster box contains 36 total packs. This boxs pull rates guarantee one rare card and one holo card. A highly sought-after box as one can pull a high-end Charizard holo.

The best card featured from this box is the 2016 XY Holo Charizard, card number 11. This card is a similar design to the original Charizard released in 1999. Only 315 of these have been graded a PSA 10 example, making this card very sought after.

English Pokemon Booster Boxes Are No Good

The Misguided Logic of Likening Modern English to Vintage English

Everyone knows about investing in sealed product now, so if you think your Evolving Skies box will be akin to a 1st Edition Base Set box or 1st Edition Neo Destiny box two decades from now, your logic isnt entirely sound.

When Pokemon cards were first released in America in 1999, hardly anyone was viewing them as long-term plays. Yes, there were a few shrewd individuals who had spectacular foresight and stashed away some booster boxes, but, for the most part, everyone was cracking them open just to get the cards inside. This eviscerated the population of sealed boxes, making them a relatively rare and scarce commodity.

But today? Everyone and their goldfish is trying to invest in Pokemon, so you can imagine how many sealed Evolving Skies boxes will still exist 15-20 years from now.

In addition, condition is a major factor here. Its difficult to find genuinely mint condition vintage English booster boxes, because people werent so particular in caring for them way back when. As a result, vintage boxes in top-tier condition command a premium because they are really hard to locate.

But since so many people are trying to make investment plays today, many are ordering cases of modern booster boxes and just placing them on a shelf without even opening the outer box that contains the booster boxes. Its kind of hard to damage a product when you havent even removed it from its packaging.

Be Mindful When Purchasing Pokemon Booster Boxes

When you purchase a Pokémon booster box, buy from a major retailer so that you can be sure that your cards are authentic.

Buying Pokémon cards or a Pokémon booster box from anyone other than a reputable seller makes it likely that you could get scammed. You could wind up with a box of fake cards, a dummy box with no cards in at all, or a box of cards that is already open!

How To Tell If A Pokemon Booster Box Has Been Resealed

How can you tell if you have a booster box that is already open and has been resealed?

  • Look for plastic wrap around the box that has the Pokémon print on it.
  • If a booster box has tape sealing it, it has likely been resealed.
  • The box is badly sealed, and it looks tampered with.
  • The card packs inside the box look tampered with.

Why Buy Pokemon Booster Boxes

The best reason to buy Pokémon booster boxes is to build a collection of the new card series.

For example, when a new series of cards comes out, you can buy a single pack of cards, and you will have around ten cards from the new set. With some decks of Pokémon cards having more than two hundred cards, that is not a great start!

Instead, buying a booster box for the new series will get you 36 packs of cards, so an average of 360 cards from the new set.

With each pack of cards containing around six common cards, three less-common cards, and one rarer card, a booster box gives you a good chance of getting a decent selection of cards in your deck.

Some people buy booster boxes as an investment. These people either leave the card box sealed and keep it in collectible condition to resell the full box years later when the value has increased. Others buy the box and open it to resell individual cards.

Buying Guide For Best Pokmon Booster Boxes

I’ve NEVER Seen This Pokemon Box Before! (STUFFED With Packs)

The Pokémon Trading Card Game first launched in the United States in October of 1998, and American Pokémon fans instantly fell in love with the highly customizable, collectible card game as it blossomed from its initial 151 creatures to well over 800 and counting years later.

Some Pokémon TCG enthusiasts arent satisfied with buying individual booster packs of 10 cards a piece, and those who want to quickly complete their collections or optimize their competitive decks with the best Pokémon cards that each set has to offer often look to buying booster boxes instead. Every Pokémon booster box contains 36 individual booster packs, and since the average Pokémon TCG series offers 130 to over 210 individual Pokémon cards to collect, its easy to see why a booster box is a great alternative for dedicated fans.

While we wish that we couldve caught em all, we investigated more than enough Pokémon booster boxes to know how to decide which ones are the best choice for Pokéfans.

Can You Make Money Buying Pokemon Booster Boxes

Can you make money buying booster boxes? Yes, but it is not easy, and the likelihood your profits will make you wealthy is slim. Unless, of course, you are willing to sit on that box for a while.

For Full Box Resale

Buying genuine sealed boxes of booster cards in pristine condition is worth the investment if you are willing to wait for that money. While you wait, those boxes of cards need to be stored well until they are harder to find, and the value goes up.

Like any other collectible, rarer and harder to find items are more valuable, BUT condition does matter.

Selling a full sealed box of Pokémon cards can earn you a nice chunk of cash, but you also run the risk of your booster box containing an exceedingly rare card.

If this happens, you may get less from selling a full box of Pokemon cards than you would have received for the one exceedingly rare card.

For Individual Card Resale

It is also possible to collect individual cards for resale, and booster boxes are a great way to do this. Just purchase booster boxes and open each pack of cards to see which are profitable to resell. Again, these cards must be in good condition!

Reselling individual cards can be problematic, though, in that the common cards have very little resale value. That said, opening each pack in a booster box will tell you which rare cards you have so that you can charge the market price for them.

This box was originally released on August 14, 2020. The box contains 36 packs featuring 189 cards plus 12 secret cards. The pull rate on pulling a Holo VMAX from this box is one in every 25.98 packs.

The best card from this set is card number 194 Salamence VMAX . This card is considered a holo rare. There are only 316 PSA 10 examples of this card. A graded PSA 10 of this Salamence VMAX is still very obtainable for most Pokémon collectors.

This set was released in February of 2016 and contained 115 cards total . The significance of this set was that it marked the 20th anniversary of Pokémon at the time. The most valuable cards in this set are known as Pokémon-EX. The EX Pokemon cards have a four to five pull rate per box.

The best card from this set is the Charizard Ex Holo card number 12. Only 363 of these exist in a PSA 10 example. This card graded in a PSA 10 example is a cheaper option than investing in a sealed box.

A card like this will always have great value because it commemorates the 20th anniversary. This is an excellent investment for any Charizard or Pokémon collector.

The original release of this box was on September 20, 2019. Ten Hidden Fates booster packs are in each box. The checklist of this box contains 68 cards plus one secret card. There is also a Shiny Vault Subset with 94 cards. The pull rate on the most sought-after card in this box is one in every 8.81 packs, which is a ten percent chance.
