Players: 2

Publisher:Konami

In 1996 Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump published Yu-Gi-Oh!, a manga series created by Kazuki Takahashi, introducing protagonist Yugi Mutou and his mysterious millennium puzzle to the world. Upon said puzzles completion, Yugi unlocks a dark spirit of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh, who uses Yugis body as a host whilst competing in several wicked and nefarious games.

The mangas popularity saw the swift production of two anime series. The first was a short-lived 27 episode Japan-only series, which mirrors the mangas dark themes and multi-game focus, whereas the second was Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters , a 224-episode spectacle primarily involving Yugi and friends using illustrated cards comprising numerous fictional monsters, spells and traps to compete in card games.

The latters success led to entertainment conglomerate Konami launching real-life counterparts of the anime cards and thus the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game was born. The Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is one of the most profitable card games around, generating almost $10 billion and counting since its inception. Undoubtedly some Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are worth more than others this list gathers together some of the rarest and most expensive Yu-Gi-Oh! cards you can find today.

Look For The Black Line

The plastic layer we mentioned earlier -on which the two faces of a Pokemon card are pressed- has a distinct black color.

When youre trying to spot fake pokemon cards, this is something that you should ALWAYS look for.

If turn a genuine Pokemon card sideways, you can spot this black line in the middle of the material. In case of a fake Pokemon card, this layer isnt and as a result, the side of the card will be completely white.

Alternative Art And Promo Cards

Some Pokémon cards are available through special promotions and offers. This makes their rarity less about what you pull from opening boosters and more about how many were created and how people could get them.

  • Alternative Art Cards ALT cards showcase a certain Pokémon card with the same text and abilities but with art that dominates the card with a special style and textured feel. The cards are specially marked with the letter A at the bottom. They are highly prized by art fans because the design takes over the whole card.

  • Promo CardsPokémon Cards from special promotions are marked with a black star and the Promo text on them. Cards that are marked as promos have their own set numbers. They are typically available in special products such as pre-release boxes at events, as part of premium editions, specialty tins, and Elite Trainer boxes.

  • Grading: CGG 8.5
  • Pokemon card value at auction: $360,000

The Pokemon Trading Card Game community was stunned when this insanely rare Pokemon card was discovered by the public for the first time in 2021. Its essentially is one of the earliest known Pokemon cards to exist, at least for the North American release. The historical Nintendo artifact went up for sale at Heritage Auctions in January 2021, and sold for a whopping $360,000, making it the third most expensive collectible just an inch behind the Base Set Charizard. Given that only two of these exist, it could one day take the top spot as the most valuable Pokemon card of all time. If nothing else it may be the rarest Pokemon card in the world.

Alternate Art Or Special Art Pokemon Cards

Alternate art pokemon cards are rare pokemon cards and considered as one of the best pulls that a player can get. These cards are full art cards differentiated from the full art cards because the artwork that appears to be more detailed deviates from the standard Pokemon cards.

You can tell that a card is an alternate art card by looking at the number at the bottom, if this number is greater than the set number then that is a good sign. So far, alternate art cards seem to interact with other objects or smaller Pokemon in the world and they are often a bit more detailed.

If you unsure, be sure to check the set list online of the booster pack you opened.

Pokemon Players Club Shiny Umbreon: $1900

If youve got a soft spot for the blue and black shiny version of the Dark-type Pokemon Umbreon, then be aware that youre not the only one. The Japanese version of the Shining Umbreon Pokemon card is pretty highly desired, with its unique coloring and gorgeous frame-piercing artwork making it fittingly beautiful as one of the first shiny Pokemon to appear on a card.

However, its price is so high because of much more than just its looks and popularity. The Shining Umbreon card only saw a very limited release through the Japanese Pokemon Players Club for hitting the maximum number of experience points through the club between 2005 and 2006, making it one of the rarest cards out there. For this reason, Troll and Toad has had it listed at just near and impressive $1900.

Look At Sold Listings For The Same Pokemon Card

How to Tell if Your Pokémon Cards Are Rare or Expensive!

On the left-hand side of the eBay search result, or in the filters tab, you can choose to view only sold listings.

The reason to do this is sellers will often list cards for more than theyre really worth, resulting in listings going on for months with no one buying the card. But if you view only sold listings, you can instantly see what people are actually willing to pay for the card.

If your card is in worse than near mint condition, you will need to look through these sold listings for cards in matching condition. Typically, sellers dont put their card condition in the title, so it can be difficult to use the search function to find matching cards.

Psa 10 Holographic Shadowless First Edition Chansey: $1100

Despite not being one of the iconic starters or legendaries, Chansey is still one of the most valuable cards from Pokemon’s Base Set. Like every other base set card, the Shadowless version gets a much higher price at auction.

There are 48 PSA 10-graded holo, shadowless Chanseys verified by the PSA. Despite that, they don’t tend to fetch as high a price as their slightly more common expansion mates, like Charizard, probably because it is a less popular Pokemon. The last verified auction sale of a PSA 10 Chansey was in 2021, when PWCC Auctions sold one for $27,412.

Rare Pokemon cards are classified into multiple categories such as standard rare plain, holo Rare, Reverse Holo, secret rare, rainbow rare and promo. However, not every booster pack or deck includes rare cards.
