First Edition Holographic Blastoise

How Much Are Shining Pokemon Cards Worth?

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $5,500

A water-type Pokémon, Blastoise first appears in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games as the final evolutionary stage of Squirtle, one of the original three starter Pokémon.

Relying on twin water cannons that retract from the shell on its back, Blastoise is capable of delivering powerful blasts of water with superior accuracy.

And just as we saw Charizard’s boost in popularity stemming from its appearance on the cover art of the Pokémon Red video game, Blastoise was the center of attention on the Pokémon Blue video game:

Rightfully considered one of the coolest-looking of all Pokémon, Blastoise remains a collector favorite and this card can bring thousands of dollars in high grade.

How To Identify First Edition Pokmon Cards

The quickest way to tell if you are looking at a first edition Pokémon card is to look for the first edition symbol.

And remember there are three types of cards you can have in your deck:

  • Pokémon
  • Energy
  • Trainer
  • This is important because the first edition symbol will appear in different locations depending on the type of card.

On Pokémon cards, it will appear to the lower-left of the Pokémon image while on Energy and Trainer cards it appears in the upper-right and lower-left corners of the cards, respectively:

Now that we got that out of the way, let’s go through the list.

The first 16 cards on this list are known as “holographic” cards as their images are shinier.

They’re also more rare as their prints runs were far more limited than the other cards in the 102-card checklist.

And because their more rare, that greatly increases their values as well…

    Venusaur Base Set Shadowless

Once again it’s clear that Venusaur cards, though valuable, don’t hold a candle to their Blastoise and Charizard counterparts. The Shadowless Base Set version of Venusaur may go for around $300, but it only puts it on par with Mewtwo‘s Shadowless Base Set card, which will be discussed next.

On one hand, being a Venusaur fan will save the collector money, but on the other, it’s just another example of the Grass-type starters being treated like second-class citizens despite having a loyal following of their own.

    Team Rocket Dark Blastoise

Gyarados Burning Shadows Card Price How much it

It’s important to preface that the following list of cards is based on their average value, and in turn, the understanding that high-graded versions of these cards go for much more. The first card on the list is the Dark Blastoise card from the Team Rocket set that released in 2000.

It goes for around $15 near mint, which is pretty affordable for fans trying to get their hands on a bit of cardboard nostalgia. The card itself has iconic art of the war machine turtle that has been considered some of the best for the creature ever made.

If you get too many results that include cards NOT like yours, use the checkboxes to pick the ones just like yours. Choosing a few comparable items by using the checkboxes gives you a much more accurate estimate of what your Pokemon card is worth.

    What to do next:

Once youve gone through and searched for what your Pokemon cards are worth using, you have several options:

If your Pokemon cards are worth a lot of money You could hold onto the cards and collect them, as most collectors do, and hope they appreciate in value over time. It may be a good investment to get them professionally graded by PSA, this will dramatically increase their value.

You could sell your Pokemon cards to a local card shop, knowing full well what theyre worth . Keep in mind dealers will buy them from you at wholesale prices they have to make a profit after all, and selling a large collection takes a considerable amount of time and resources so dont expect to get 100% of what youd get online.

Selling your Pokemon cards online will get you the highest prices, but it can be time consuming: taking pictures, writing descriptions, responding to customers, packing, shipping, returns its a lot of work. If you have the time and patience, selling them online is a great way to make money. Read our guide to selling on eBay.

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $750

The intent of the Item Finder is exactly as it sounds: it aids players in locating items.

While its name and how it helps players find items greatly changed in later Pokémon games, the first edition card merely instructs the player to discard two cards from his or her hand and replace them with a trainer card.

If Pokemon fans were to list and rank the original 151 based on how iconic or notable they are Mewtwo would easily be in the top 10, and possibly the top five, only trailing the starters and Pikachu.

    Misty’s Gyarados 1st Edition Holographic

People often wonder how much value the addition of the 1st Edition emblem adds to a classic Pokemon card, and this entry provides the answer to that. Earlier the regular holographic version of Misty’s Gyarados from the Gym Challenge set was said to have sold for around $500.

The 1st Edition of the same card has sold for around $1,000, meaning that the added symbol practically doubles the value based on the rarity of 1st Editions in comparison to cards from the normal base sets.

By simply searching what a high-graded version of the Shadowless Base Set version of Charizard goes for, it will become apparent just how valuable this card can be. It’s important to remember just how much value is added to a card the moment it’s officially graded.

People with money burning a hole in their pocket can look to get this card for around $2,800, but if they’re looking for the best version it might take a vault or two of cash to secure it.

Shadowless Cards Are Rarer Than Their Counterparts

So this was news to me since getting back into Pokemon card trading just recently, but it turns out that the very first round of printed Pokemon cards did not have that handy shadow around the Pokemon art like the later cards did. That makes these cards especially valuable.

You might have heard about a certain Charizard card going for an insane amount of money. While normal base set Charizards are still worth a lot, shadowless propel that value upwards even farther. Check out this article to learn how to tell the difference.

    St Edition Shadowless Holographic

Pokemon Cards – AMAZING Shiny Mega Gyarados Collection Box Opening!

It should come as no surprise that the most expensive and valuable Gyarados card out there is the 1999 1st Edition Shadowless card from the base set. This is the case for most Kanto region Pokemon as it’s the oldest set in the franchise. A card being worth $14,000 may not seem like a lot when compared to Charizard or high-end sports cards, but for a non-starter Pokemon not named Pikachu, it’s quite a feat. The fact that the card is a 1st Edition and graded a 10 by PSA turned a somewhat valuable card into a small gold mine in terms of value.

    First Edition Holographic Ninetales

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $3,000

It’s easy to see where Ninetales gets its name although the spelling of “tails” is noticeably different.

And while each of its golden-white tails is catching to the eye, it is said that simply grabbing one of them can result in a 1,000-year curse giving this fox-like Pokémon its reputation of extreme vengeance.

Inspired by the kitsune of Japanese folklore, Ninetales holds mysterious powers within its nine tails and can even control the mind with its piercing, red eyes.

    Ex Deoxys Gold Star Rayquaza

Gyarados Generations Card Price How much it

Sold in December, 2020 for $45,100

Among the most powerful of any Pokémon, Rayquaza is a large, serpentine creature that gained a considerable boost in notoriety after serving as the box art mascot for the Pokémon Emerald video game.

EX Deoxys was the 24th set in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and its symbol is that of a shooting star.

The set consisted of 108 cards, three of which come with a gold star variant, including the Rayquaza Holo.

Youll notice that next to the Rayquaza name in the upper-left, there is a foil gold star that sets it apart as the gold star variant.

    First Edition Holographic Charizard

Estimated PSA 10 Gem Mint Value: $24,000

The #4 Charizard is by far the most desirable of all the first edition Pokémon cards.

Charizard made its first appearance in the Pokémon Red and Blue video games released for the Nintendo Game Boy and Game Boy Color back in the mid-90s and trainers have been relying on the character’s overpowering fire and flying abilities to win battles ever since.

Just how powerful are its fire abilities?

Well, simply refer to the bottom of the card’s front and you can see that Charizard is capable of melting boulders and starting forest fires with ease.

Charizard’s appeal as a dragon and one of the more rare cards certainly adds to its popularity but I think where this card gets an extra boost in value comes from the fact that Charizard appeared on the cover art of the Pokémon Red video game:

That additional exposure greatly increased the character’s notoriety and has driven up the value of this card similar to the effect we see with the Garbage Pail Kids card, Adam Bomb, and its status as the original cover art for that series.

Regardless of why this card is so popular, its value will continue to soar just like the lovable flying dragon creature itself.

The Demand Of The Particular Pokemon And Card

Some Pokemon are just more popular than others, and the same goes for certain cards. For example, for whatever reason the Shining Gyarados Card is going for hundred of dollars. In fact, in mint condition the card is worth a whopping $10,000. Simple, near mint non first edition variations of this card are still going for hundred of dollars. Meanwhile, the original, base set Gyarados Unlimited is going for 18 bucks right now. Go figure? It all just has to do with demand.

    First Edition Cards In Review

Whether you are a fan of them or not, there’s no debating that first edition Pokémon cards are some of the hottest cards in non-sports card collecting.

The video games, television shows, and the cards themselves transformed Pokémon into a worldwide phenomenon with an enormous fan base.

And many of those kids who grew up with these cards are now adults with more spending power able to pay big bucks for them in top condition.

It doesn’t look like that trend will slow anytime soon as these cards have found their place as one of the most popular non-sports sets in the hobby.

    Are Your Pokemon Cards Graded

During the pandemic, so many people were looking to get their cards graded that they literally overwhelmed the companies that offer grading. Now, grading Pokemon cards seems relatively new. Back when I was a teenager looking to pay for dates, I sold the majority of my Pokemon cards . Back then, I dont remember seeing a a lot of graded cards around.

Today, however, thats changed. Its very common to be browsing eBay and come across a professionally graded card.

Now, there is still a size able market for ungraded cards, but yeah the biggest bucks are going to those graded cards, especially the ones rated a 10 or close to it. If you think you have a seriously valuable card on your hands and could benefit from that PSA grading, it might be worthwhile to check out how to get your card graded.

If your card is less valuable and/or not near mint condition or likely to be in the lower realm of Near Mint condition , then you are probably fine just tapping into the ungraded card market.
