What The Bubble Means
When you are looking at all of your Pokemon, you will notice that your buddy has a white bubble over its head that contains two smiling faces. This is like the marker you get when certain Pokemon are defending a gym. It’s just a label to remind you that that particular Pokemon has a job to do.
That white bubble means that this Pokemon is your current buddy.
More Berries Than Ever
We explained in;our primer;that razz berries are items you can feed a Pokemon to slow it down before you capture it. Updates have introduced multiple types of berries that each have different effects.Nanab Berries: Use these berries to slow down a wild Pokemons movements. Strategic use of these can be key to capturing a particularly elusive Mon.Pinap Berries: These double the amount of Candy you get as a reward if your next attempt to capture a Pokemon succeeds. Its a bit of a risk though, because if you fail to capture your next target the berry goes to waste.Razz Berries: Mechanics havent changed here. Razz Berries can still be fed to a wild Pokemon to make it easier to catch.Golden Razz Berries: Like their less shiny cousins, the Golden Razz Berries have the same function of making it easy to capture wild Pokemon, but are much more powerful. You can use berries in tandem with a stronger Pokeball to catch particularly feisty or extremely rare Pokemon that cross your path. However, dont use multiple berries at a time since their effects dont stack. One of the aspiring trainers right here in the PCMag Labs caught themselves a Dragonair doing just that. Feed the Pokemon a razz berry, take out a Great Ball, give it some good arc on your throw, and catching just got a whole lot easier.

Niantic has made it pretty easy to earn hearts in its new Pokemon Go Buddy Adventure system.
Released last week as part of a new update, your Pokemon Go Buddy can now do a lot more, including following you around the map.
The new system is very much like the one found for Friends in Pokemon Go and it comes with its own set of rewards for those who play the game a lot.
The two main points of the Buddy System that Trainers will be keeping an eye on is accessing new levels to unlock perks and keeping their Buddys mood high.
And the best way to level up your Pokemon Go Buddy level is by earning hearts, which can be achieved by completing daily tasks with your Buddy.
And one of the easiest of them all to perform is also the easiest thing that can be done each day for all Trainers.

How To Earn Pokmon Hearts And Raise Friendship Level
There are several things you can do to earn hearts. After feeding your buddy berries, itll gain a heart and begin to walk with you. Once its walking with you, there are several things you can do to earn more hearts.
Heres a complete list of the things you can do every day to earn hearts:
- Walk two kilometers together – Walk your buddy. Theyll need to be following you for this distance to count. If theyre not following you, youll still earn candies for your buddy based on distance.
- Give your buddy a treat – Feed your buddy. Youll need to wait until their hunger meter is low before feeding a second time.
- Play together – While looking at your buddy in AR mode, simply rub the top of its head. This counts as playing together.
- Battle together – Take your buddy into a trainer battle or fight against a gym. Your buddy doesnt need to fight themselves, they just need to be in the team you select.
- Take a snapshot – This can be done in AR mode by tapping the camera icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Visit a new place – Spin a PokéStop you havent been to before with your buddy.
If you dont want to battle with your Pokémon, you can start a battle against a Team Leader, like Spark or Candela, with your buddy in your team. You can quit the battle immediately and itll still give your buddy the heart.
Quick Taps For More Information
Want to check your buddy’s walking stats and then its fighting stats? No problem. To get to the buddy screen quickly, tap on your avatar at the bottom on the map. Then, tap on your buddy when the next screen pops up. This will take you to the buddy screen. Then, tap the gauge below your buddy and you’ll be taken to your buddy’s stat page that includes type, weight, height and fighting abilities.

How To Play With Your Buddy
This is one of those things that seems very simple but once you try it out you run into odd roadblocks. In short, to play with your buddy all you need to do is tap the buddy window in the bottom right of the main screen. This will bring up the Buddy menu where you will see a big Play button at the top. Tap this to load into the AR buddy experience where you should see your buddy standing before you .
Once you see your buddy in front of you just start swiping the screen on them. If youre doing it right then youll see very small sparkles appear where you swipe and your buddy Pokémon will react in some way. You need to do this for a few seconds for it to count, so as long as you see the sparkles and your buddy reacting just keep swiping back and forth or around the screen. After a couple of seconds your buddy Pokémon will smile and bounce a little which marks a play.
For the Distracted by Something Shiny Special Research you need to do this 10 times. Theres no limit on how many times you can play with your buddy so you can get these done in just a couple of minutes if you need to, now that you know how to play with your buddy in Pokémon GO.

How Much Candy Do You Get For Walking A Buddy Pokmon
Buddy candy is based on distance. Some Pokémon require you to walk 1 KM, others 3 KM or 5 KM to earn a candy. The distances are roughly but not exactly related to the distance of the Pokémon Eggs they hatch from ;2 KM hatches tend to get a candy every 1 KM, 5 KM hatches every 3 KM, and 10 KM hatches every 10 KM, though there are some exceptions.
Here’s how walking a Buddy Pokémon compares to other methods for getting Candy in Pokémon Go:
- 1 Candy per Buddy distance walked.
- 1 Candy per Pokémon transferred to the Professor.
- 3 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 6 Candies per base-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 5 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 10 Candies per second-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 10 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild.
- 20 Candies per third-level Pokémon caught in the wild while using a Pinap Berry.
- 5 to 15 Candies per 2 KM Egg hatched.
- 10 to 21 Candies per 5 KM Egg hatched.
- 16 to 32 Candies per 10 KM Egg hatched.
Again, walking a Buddy Pokémon isn’t a fast way to get a lot of Candy but it’s a consistent way to get a steady stream of Candy.
How To Walk With Your Buddy In Pokemon Go
Its not too difficult to walk with your buddy Pokemon! All you need to do is tap on their avatar which is right next to your face at the bottom left of the application. This will initially guide you through feeding your buddy and maxing out their food intake. You can either place them nearby in AR mode, or you can hit the quick treat option . Now, all you need to do is throw berries to them like you would throw a PokeBall at a Pokemon! Make sure to aim correctly, because if you dont land it on them it will disappear!
Once youve done that, your buddy will now be able to go on an adventure with you. Thats really all you need to do! As long as your buddys food meter stays relatively full, it will continue to walk with you on your adventure. You can then play, walk, battle, or take a snapshot with them! All of these are daily activities you can participate in that will upgrade your buddy rank with that particular Pokemon.
You can swap your buddy up to 20 times a day, and if you do you will need to feed them enough berries to get them to walk with you. Once that food meter is full, they will appear on your map as normal. You can then go through and do all the things you did on your previous buddy. This isnt limited to one buddy per day, you can do them for many different Pokemon!

How To Make Your Buddy ‘excited’ With Or Without A Poffin In Pokmon Go
When in Adventure mode, performing activities with Buddies increases their mood. The highest level mood, ‘excited’ can also give you benefits for a limited time.
When your buddy is ‘excited’ – as indicated by a cheering icon surrounded by Hearts – then you’ll receive the following benefits:
- Candy distances will be halved
- Your daily Heart cap increases to 20
Getting a Pokémon excited, then, has its perks. To get it excited, there are two methods:
To make a Pokemon ‘excited’, you can either:
- Use Poffin – a shop-only item you can purchase from the shop for 100 Coins – which also fills all feeding heart meters for the day
- Perform enough actions to reach a certain threshold
Though the second one is ‘free’, it’s neither easy or particularly obvious from the outset. You must collect 32 ‘points’ from performing various activities, but you cannot do them at once – each individual activity has a 30 minute cooldown, with the exception of walking.
Here’s how many points you get from each activity :
Some clarifications on the above, thanks to TheTraveller on reddit – you can get multiple Battle points within a half hour if you Battle different ways and Souvenirs, Presents and visiting new Stops have no cooldown, just like walking.
It’s also important to note that, with the introduction of the Season of Celebrations on Tuesday, 1st December, the number of hearts you can earn daily from battling was increased to three.

When this is on, you can click on your Buddy Pokemon icon, followed by clicking on your Buddy Pokemon directly.
This will bring you to your Buddy Tracking screen, which confirms the daily activities performed that day. To play with your Pokemon in Pokemon Go, you just need to click on the big play button found underneath it.
This will bring you to the AR screen and you will then need to find a flat surface so that your Pokemon can appear. After this is done, you then need to rub your Pokemon left and right until a heart appears on the screen.
This is a one-heart activity, meaning you can only perform once each day. That is unless your can boost your Buddy Pokemon into an Excited mood.
According to Niantic, if you can reach the level 5 mood, this increases the number of possible Affection hearts you can earn that day.
While your buddy is Excited, youll see double heart icons next to each activity. The walking distance required to collect a Candy will also be reduced while your buddy is Excited.
So the more stuff you do, the easier it will be to earn those hearts and bring your Buddy level up. And unlike your buddys Mood, Buddy Levels dont decrease over time and much like Friendship Levels, each Buddy Level unlocks special perks.
Heres why its worth unlocking those new levels in Pokemon Go:
