Where To Find Tyrogue In Pokmon Sword And Shield
While Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan are some of the original Pokémon from Generation I, their pre-evolution, Tyrogue, wasnt discovered until Generation II .
To get a specific evolution, you may have to catch a fair few Tyrogue, but luckily, they are quite common, spawn in the overworld, and are aggressive in the field.
Heres where you can find Tyrogue in Pokémon Sword and Shield:
- Route 3: All Weather Conditions
- Rolling Fields: Heavy Fog, Intense Sun, Normal Conditions, Overcast Conditions, Raining, Sandstorms, Snowing, Snowstorms, Thunderstorms
- Stony Wilderness: Normal Conditions
- South Lake Miloch: Heavy Fog, Intense Sun, Normal Conditions, Overcast Conditions, Raining, Sandstorms, Snowing, Snowstorms, Thunderstorms
- South Lake Miloch: Overcast Conditions
- Dappled Grove: Overcast Conditions
- Giants Seat: Overcast Conditions
- West Lake Axewell: Overcast Conditions
As you can see, if youre in overcast conditions or change the weather to overcast conditions, youd struggle to not bump into a Tyrogue while roaming the Wild Area.
If youd rather just catch a Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop to skip the evolution process of Tyrouge, though, you can find them in the overworld of specific Wild Area locations.
You can find Hitmonlee in the overworld of the Dusty Bowl during overcast conditions. However, Hitmonlee is an exclusive spawn to Pokémon Sword.
How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonlee
Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonlee if its attack is higher than its defense when it reaches level 20. Youll want to look for Pokemon with Natures that either raise attack or lower defense. This applies for the following Natures:
You can check your Tyrogues Nature in the second-to-last tab of its Summary page . Alternatively, look at the stat hexagon chart. The value colored in red is the raised value, while the value colored in blue is the lowered value. A Nature that raises attack is arguably better than one that lowers defense, since the latter would actively hinder Hitmonlees protection, but either one will work for obtaining the Pokemon.
How Does A Tyrogue Evolve Into A Fighting Type
Once you have a Tyrogue, how it evolves from into the three fighting types depends on its stats: If Attack is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonlee. If Defence is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonchan. If Stamina / HP is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmontop.

To evolve Tyrogue into Hitmontop Anyway, to get Hitmontop youll need Tyrogues highest stat to be its Stamina / HP. If thats the case, when it evolves itll evolve into Hitmontop. To find out if Stamina / HP are Tyrogues top stat, use the appraisal tool and get the professor to look at your Pokemon.
How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonlee Hitmonchan And Hitmontop
The first step to evolving Tyrogue is… well, it’s to catch a Tyrogue. These little beasts can be found out int he wild as with any Pokemon, but they mercifully can also be found inside 5km Pokemon Eggs, as depicted on our Pokemon Go Egg Chart. Tyrogue is an ‘uncommon’ egg hatch, which makes it a little less unlikely than basic Pokemon but still not actually that difficult to hatch – so get walking and hatching!
Once you have your hands on your Tyrogue you’ll want to look into evolving it. As with Eevee’s evolutions, exactly how it evolves is based on an external factor: though where Eevee it’s down to the Pokemon’s name or a random chance, Tyrogue’s evolutions are a lot more predictable, as shown in the video above from YouTube user Yanrique Wright.

How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmonchan Hitmonlee Or Hitmontop
Evolving Tyrogue is easy, but also a process you can’t entirely control. Tyrogue will evolve into Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Or Hitmontop at level 20. Which one it becomes is based on its Attack and Defense stats.
- If Defense is greater than Attack, Tyrogue will become Hitmonchan.
- If Attack is greater than Defense, Tyrogue will become Hitmonlee.
- If Attack and Defense are equal, Tyrogue will become Hitmontop.
You can influence the Attack and Defense stats using EVs somewhat, but its best to just catch a Tyrogue that’s already naturally high in the stats for your desired evolution.
Alternatively, you can try to catch the evolved trio in the wild. All three can appear in Max Raid Battles in the Rolling Fields, South Lake Miloch, and Stony Wilderness. Hitmonchan has a 5% chance of appearing in the Dusty Bowl area in Shield, whereas Hitmonlee has a 5% of appearing in the Dusty Bowl in Sword. Hitmontop has a 2% chance of appearing at the Lake of Outrage in both versions.
How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmontop Hitmonlee And Hitmonchan
Once you have a Tyrogue, how it evolves from into the three fighting types depends on its stats:
- If Attack is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonlee
- If Defence is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmonchan
- If Stamina / HP is higher than other stats, Tyrogue evolves into Hitmontop
If the stats are the same – for example, all are a maximum of 15 – then the evolution will be random. If two are the same, then it’ll choose between two of those possible evolutions at random. So if Attack and Defence match, it’ll evolve into either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan.
This is based on preliminary findings from the community of researchers over at The Silph Road sub-Reddit, who polled users on their stats and eventual evolutions.

The top example of a pre-evolution is of course Pichu, the baby Pokemon that becomes Pikachu, but Gen 2 adds a bunch of them to the game including Magby, Smoochum and Tyrogue. On this page it’s that last one we’re interested in – the little kung-fu capable fighting type who has the ability to become a fighting legend.
Tyrogue can be evolved into three different Pokemon, making it similar to how Eevee can be evolved into a number of different Pokemon each with different skills. Much like Eevee the way you evolve into the potential new Pokemon Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and Hitmontop depends on some external factors beyond you triggering the evolution. With Eevee we had to put together a detailed page explaining all the Eevee evolution methods, and it only seemed wise to do the same here. So… let’s do it.
How To Evolve Into Hitmonchan
Raise to level 20 with Defense higher than Attack
Tyrouge will evolve into Hitmonchan at level 20 if its Defense stat is higher than its Attack stat.
If you have a Tyrogue with a low Defense stat and want to evolve it into Hitmonchan, raise its Defense EV by letting hold a Power Belt while battling, feeding it the Iron Vitamin, or by defeating wild Pokemon that raise Defense EVs like Silcoon.

Now that Pokemon Go has added all the Gen 2 Pokemon to the game, some all new ways to reach classic Pokemon are available in the form of ‘baby’ Pokemon, or as we briefly called them in the late 90s, ‘pre-evolutions’. These are basically versions of Pokemon that evolve into Pokemon we’re already familiar with from Gen 1.

Plenty more Pokemon Go tips and tricks can be found in our in-depth Pokemon Go guide.
For the record, it’s not possible to actually influence the stats of your Tyrogue – it’s entirely random, so cross your fingers and hope for good luck. Pokemon that hatch from eggs are more likely to be quicker, and 5km eggs are your fastest way of potentially farming multiple Tyrogue unless you’re near a natural nest of the creatures.
As mentioned a couple of times above, if you need to find out which of your stats is top with Tyrogue, the quickest way is to use the appraisal tool you find when you view a Pokemon – the professor that helps you out will give you information on the Pokemon, and though vague it does outright tell you the best of its stats.
Don’t forget that to farm the candy needed to evolve Tyrogue you can set Tyrogue as your Buddy Pokemon and walk with it – as you do, you’ll be rewarded candy every 5km.

Using Feathers To Change Tyrogues Stats
For Tyrogue, youll want to have plenty of Muscle Feathers and Resist Feathers.
Giving Tyrogue a Muscle Feather will slightly increase its base attack points.
Giving Tyrogue a Resist Feather will slightly increase its base defence points.
The Feathers are described as only slightly increasing attack and defence, with you needing a large haul of either to make a visible impact on Tyrogues attack and defence stats.
You can find the Resist Feather and Muscle Feather items on Route 5, along the bridge that connects Hulbury to Turffield by the Pokémon Nursery.
On the bridge, the Feathers respawn after some time, so it is possible to return to Route 5 to restock on Resist Feathers and Muscle Feathers.
Whenever you see something sparkling on that bridge, itll most likely be one of types of Feather items. Pick it up by pressing A while standing over the sparkle.
For the sake of saving time and being more effective when using items, youre much better off going down the route of using Protein and Iron, as shown below.
Tyrogue Evolution: How To Get Hitmontop Hitmonchan And Hitmonlee
Just as getting Tyrogue is reminiscent of the games it originally featured in, its branching evolution options are handled in a way inspired by the rules of the handheld series. Whereas those games determine the evolution based on the Attack and Defense stats of your Tyrogue, in Pokémon GO specific Attack, Defense and HP stats are associated with each evolution:
- Hitmonlee is associated with Attack
- Hitmonchan is associated with Defense
- Hitmontop is associated with HP
Thankfully, checking a Pokémons IVs has become very simple since a July 2019 update to the appraisal feature so there’s no need to use an IV Checker tool to figure out what you’re going to get. Its now a simple case of checking the appraisal feature on your Pokémon’s status page, and seeing which bar is longest.
Between bar length and the icon provided on the evolve button, the screenshots below clearly illustrate how you can now easily tell which Tyrogue evolution you will get for your 25 candies:
- If Attack IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonlee
- If Defense IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan
- If HP IVs are highest, your Tyrogue will become a Hitmonchan
But what if your Tyrogue has two or more highest IVs of equal value? You will then receive a random evolution from among the valid options, For example:

However, if you have a specific Tyrogue that you want to keep and evolve into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or Hitmontop, you can change Tyrogues stats with items.

How Do You Know What Tyrogue Will Evolve Into
Once you have a Tyrogue, how it evolves from into the three fighting types depends on its stats:
What Your Tyrogue Will Evolve Into
Wrking out which evolution your baby Tyrogue will take is a little tricky but there are some ways you can point it one way or the other. Most of the time, it’ll be easy to determine what your Tyrogue will evolve into. First you’ll want to appraise it, but keep note of what your team leader says is its strongest stat.
In this case, the Tyrogue’s strongest stat is its attack, meaning that the Tyrogue above is 100% guaranteed to evolve into a Hitmonlee. If your Tyrogue has one stat that’s called out during this evaluation, you can use the info below to determine what it’ll evolve into:
- Best stat is HP – Hitmontop
- Best stat is Attack – Hitmonlee
- Best stat is Defense – Hitmonchan
Simple! Well, that is if you have a Tyrogue with a clear best stat. What if the Tyrogue has a tie for its best stat? Unfortunately there’s now an element of chance involved. Here are some examples:
- Best stats are HP and Attack – 50% Hitmontop, 50% Hitmonlee
- Best stats are HP and Defense – 50% Hitmontop, 50% Hitmonchan
- Best stats are Attack and Defense – 50% Hitmonlee, 50% Hitmonchan
- All three stats are equal – 33% Hitmontop, 33% Hitmonlee, 33% Hitmonchan
You should now be able to evolve your Tyrogue and understand what the odds are for each evolution. Unfortunately it means that if you hatch a perfect IV Tyrogue, it’ll be complete chance what evolution you end up with. That said, it will at least save you wasting Tyrogue Candies if you’re guaranteed to not get the one you want. Good luck!
