First, we need to show you how to find out a cards rarity just by looking at it. This is represented by a symbol located in the bottom right corner of every card. There should be a shape that indicates what rarity the card is.
Common cards are marked with a black circle, uncommon cards have a black diamond, and rare cards always have a black star. This is the basic way to tell the rarity of a card.
Rare cards, for instance, are split into multiple different kinds of rarities. There are the standard rare plain-looking cards, but theres so much more after that.
What Is A Shadowless Card And How Can I Identify Them
The early unlimited edition print runs of Base Set that still adheredto the original card design. Shadowless only applies to non-1st Edition, Base Set Cards.
In Base Set, initially the card design was different in that therewas no shadow around the picture of the Pokémon, the date format and fontsize used were different. So initially the unlimited print runs looked different,then were changed.

To the untrained eye, the Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 may look identical to the most expensive and rarest Pokémon card on this list, but there are many key differences. This edition of the original English language Base Set Charizard card features the same artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita, but it lacks the 1st Edition stamp and also features a drop shadow to the right of the art panel. This card was part of the Unlimited print run of the 1999 Pokémon Base Set meaning its 1st Edition counterpart is a much more rare Pokémon card. The original publisher of the English Pokémon card game was Wizards of the Coast, and after their initial print runs of the Pokémon Base Set, they received some criticism that the card design was too boring. To combat these complaints they added a shadow effect to the right side of the art panel. While the shadow may have made the card look more aesthetically pleasing back in the day, today it does carry a more affordable price tag. A Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 PSA 10 sold for as high as $8,100 on StockX making it the second most expensive Pokémon card to sell on StockX.

The Backless Blastoise may appear to look a lot like the Blastoise from the original Base Set, and that is because it is a Wizards of the Coast prototype from when they were tasked with producing the first-ever English language Pokémon set. This card was printed in 1998, one year before the Base Set hit the United States, and was printed without any artwork or logo on the back of the card, hence the name, Backless Blastoise. The card was never meant for the public, but no one could predict in 1998 that Pokémon would take off in the way that it has. In January 2021 this rare Pokémon card sold for $360,000 making it the third most expensive Pokémon card ever.

Holo Reverse Holo Full Art Holo
Perhaps an easier way to find valuable Pokemon cards is to look for holo cards these are also called holofoil, holographic, shiny, or foil cards. There are several types of holo Pokemon cards:
- Holo The Pokemon image is holofoil
- Reverse Holo The frame around is holofoil, but not the actual Pokemon image
- Full Art Holo The entire card is covered in holofoil graphics

What Are Cosmos Holo Cards
Sometimes referred to as Galaxy Holo cards, Cosmos Holo cards feature a pattern of stars, circles and dots that resemble planets and stars in space.
This style of holo was used for the 1999 Base Set, the Jungle set and the Fossil set. The Lapras holo card from the Fossil Set clearly shows the reflected light from this distinctive Cosmos design.
From Base 2 the Cosmos Holo pattern changed slightly. The stars were gone, replaced by a pattern of circles and dots. This design continued through to HeartGold SoulSilver Call of Legends and is thought by many to be the best holo pattern.
More recent decks have featured Cosmos Holo cards as promo cards in special decks or blister packs. The holographic reflection on modern cards is more subtle than the earlier versions of the style as can be seen in the Pikachu Sun and Moon Promo card.
With the introduction of art cards in the Black and White expansion series, holo cards became less popular and nowadays are only marginally more valuable than Common and Uncommon cards. However, cards with the Cosmos Holo design continue to be popular among collectors and generally fetch a higher price than their modern-day equivalents.
The most recent Cosmos Holo card is Single Strike Tepig from the Battle Styles set which featured as the promo card in the 2021 Spring Collectors Chest.

The most expensive Pokémon card on our list is no surprise. There is no more iconic card in the Pokémon TCG than the Charizard Base Set 1st Edition 4/102, and in the last 12 months, this card has made plenty of headlines from Logic purchasing a PSA 10 version of the card for $220,000 in October of 2020, to Logan Paul wearing the same card around his neck graded a BGS 10 to his exhibition against Floyd Mayweather in June 2021. This Charizard card is the most sought-after Pokémon card that exists. What makes it so special is that it was part of the first print run of the English edition of the beloved trading card game, making it an extremely rare Pokémon card. The card features a 1st Edition stamp below the card artwork, and it is shadowless, meaning that there is no drop shadow to the right of the art panel. A Charizard Base Set 1st Edition PSA 9 sold for $26,000 in late 2020 making it the most expensive Pokémon card to ever sell on StockX.
While all of these Pokémon cards carry substantial value, they still do not come close to the record for the most expensive Pokémon cards ever. Logan Paul claims his Charizard Base Set 1st Edition BGS 10 is a million-dollar card, but that price has yet to be seen. Secret Rare Pokemon Cards
Secret Rare Pokemon Cards are the most difficult to obtain, and the type of card you’re least likely to encounter. Secret Rare Pokemon Cards will also have the same kinds of distinguishing factors as Ultra Rare so its possible to mix them up, in order to verify if your Ultra Rare is a Secret Rare you’ll need to take a look at the cards set number. Just to the left of the Rarity Symbol we were looking at before you’ll see two numbers next to each other in the following format XXX/YYY. This will tell you what number the card you’re looking at is in the set.
For example, in the Forbidden Light set you could pull a Gogoat and it would display 10/131 in the lower right. This tells you it’s card number 10 our of 131 in the set. That second number doesn’t ever include the Secret Rare cards though. While the Gogoat is telling the player there’s 131 possible cards in the Forbidden Light set there’s actually 146 cards in the set. From that same set you can pull the Rainbow Rare Dialga-GX card which will give you the number 138/131.
As soon as you see that the number to the left is above the number to the right that’s your indication that the card in your hands is a Secret Rare.

Time is a flat circle, and it seems like just yesterday I was spending my allowance every week on Pokémon cards in junior high. Well, now Pokémon cards, and opening them on Twitch streams and in YouTube videos, are all the rage again, and it turns out some of those cards you got as a kid may be valuable today, if you kept themand kept them in good shape.
Wading into the exact valuation of all Pokémon cards is a swamp that its hard to emerge from, so I thought Id focus on one particular type of card which was coveted when I was a kid. I saved it because I thought it might be worth something someday, and it turns out I was right. Well, depending on which version you have.
Here is a gradient scale on which of the old school Charizard cards are the most and least valuable. Exact figures for selling prices are hard to pin down. The low end might be a few hundred, the higher end for the rarest Charizard editions can be tens of thousands, if not over $100K for true perfection. The prices below are estimates and again, its a wide range. If yours isnt here at all, it may be too common to be worth all that much. These cards are also usually PSA 9-10 graded meaning they have to be in stellar condition, not just sitting in a shoebox somewhere, in order to see these ranges of prices.

What Is A Reverse Holo Card
A reverse holo card is a card that has a regular image at the top but the rest of the card is holographic. It is the reverse of a regular holo card hence its name.
These cards first appeared in 2002 with the release of the Legendary Collection expansion set.
They are not part of the main set of cards but form an alternative version of the non-holo cards. Sometimes called alternate holo cards they are designated rare, uncommon or common to match their non-holo counterparts.
The rarity of the card is indicated by a symbol next to the card number. indicates Rare, indicates Uncommon and indicates Common.

What Are Holo Cards
A holo card is a rare card that has a holographic, shiny image at the top of the card instead of regular two-dimensional art. Its rarity is indicated by a next to its card number.
Holo cards have appeared in every set from the original base set released in 1999. The first holo cards gained their shiny quality through the use of a thin layer of foil.
The holo Cobalion card shown here is from the Sword and Shield Chilling Reign set. It clearly shows the light reflected by the straight line textured holographic image.
Over the years there have been different styles of holo cards including starlight, cosmos, tinsel, mirror, crosshatch, straight line, confetti and cracked ice. They have been named for the holographic pattern that features on those cards.

It is interesting to see the Charizard Base Set Shadowless 4/102 Pokémon card rank behind the Unlimited print edition as the Shadowless Charizard is a much rarer Pokémon card. There are over 24,100 Unlimited print Base Set Charizard cards compared to only 4,804 Shadowless Base Set Charizards. Much like the Unlimited print Charizard, the Charizard Base Set Shadowless 4/102 looks nearly identical to the 1st Edition Base Set Charizard, as both cards do not have the drop shadow added to the right side of their art panels. The only difference is the Shadowless version of the card is missing the 1st Edition stamp. While this is not the most expensive Pokémon card, or even the most expensive Charizard card on this list, a PSA 9 still sold on StockX for $8,000.
