There are not that many starter cards from Pokemon that arent Charizard that sell for big money. However, Gold Star Torchic from Team Rocket Returns is an unusual case. This copy was sold for more than $25,000 by the end of 2020. The card was one of only 17 to get the perfect PSA GEM-MT 10 rating. In the years since a few other cards in the set have also sold for high prices, but none of them has such a high price as the little fire Pokemon.

Update : McDonalds has released the following statement, confirming it is working on restocking the promotion:
“We love seeing fans passion for our limited-time Happy Meal promotion celebrating 25 years of Pokémon. With such significant demand for our promotional Pokémon TCG cards, and some fans even going to extreme lengths to get them, were working quickly to address shortages and also strongly encouraging restaurants to set a reasonable limit on Happy Meals sold per customer. We want to offer the full Happy Meal experience to as many families as possible, and help ensure everyone is able to get in on the fun!”
Alongside this, McDonalds has also clarified its policies on selling Happy Meals promotions without buying an actual meal, saying:
“All Happy Meal toys, including our Pokémon trading cards, are intended to be sold with Happy Meals. In some cases, restaurants may accommodate reasonable customer requests for a-la-carte toy purchases. McDonalds policy is to not sell full cases of Happy Meal toys to customers.”

This month marks Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary, and to celebrate, Pokémon and McDonalds have teamed up to give away exclusive Pokémon cards with ‘every’ Happy Meal.
Tropical Mega Battle: $10000
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, an annual Pokemon Trading Card Game tournament was held in Honolulu, Hawaii. At this 1999 event, just 12 of these Tropical Mega Battle cards were produced to be distributed to some of the lucky 50 players who attended the event, meaning the remaining number of mint copies is especially low all these years later.

Showing a Psyduck having a nap in a hammock on a tropical island, this legendary Trainer Card sells for a whole lot of cash thanks to its rarity. Pokemon Japanese Tropical Mega Battle Number 2 Trainer
Sold in October, 2020 for $50,300
Held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village from 1999 to 2001, the Pokemon Tropical Mega Battle gave the best players from the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Europe the chance to test their skills against each other.
To be invited, players had to first win a local tournament in their respective regions.
During the final match of the Tropical Mega Battle, each player received the same 90 cards that they would use to make their own 40-card deck to battle for the championship.
If a player were fortunate enough to make it far enough through the competition to finish in second place overall, he or she would receive this number two trainer card.
Sticking with the tropical theme for the cover art, an image of Exeggutor, a dual-type grass/psychic Pokemon that resembles a palm tree, sits in the middle of the card with text below it that reads:

One of only two such Pokémon cards in existence – making it extremely rare – this Blastoise suddenly became one of the most valuable Pokémon cards of all time after it sold at auction in January 2021 for a whopping $360,000 .
The ultra-rare Pokémon card was created in 1998 as a presentation piece by Magic: The Gathering maker Wizards of the Coast to convince Nintendo of Japan executives to allow it to handle the TCGs English-language release. The game would eventually make its international debut one year later in 1999.
While two Blastoise Presentation cards were produced, this is the only one that has been seen publicly. Even more impressively, it has been graded at a NM/Mint+ 8.5 level by certification website CGC, meaning that the 20-plus-year-old card is in near-perfect condition. The location and state of the other Presentation card remains unknown – meaning that this may well be the only such card of its type left.

To the untrained eye, the Charizard Base Set Unlimited Print 4/102 may look identical to the most expensive and rarest Pokémon card on this list, but there are many key differences. This edition of the original English language Base Set Charizard card features the same artwork by Mitsuhiro Arita, but it lacks the 1st Edition stamp and also features a drop shadow to the right of the art panel. This card was part of the Unlimited print run of the 1999 Pokémon Base Set meaning its 1st Edition counterpart is a much more rare Pokémon card. The original publisher of the English Pokémon card game was Wizards of the Coast, and after their initial print runs of the Pokémon Base Set, they received some criticism that the card design was too boring. What Are The McDonalds Pokémon Cards?
Each Happy Meal comes with a pack of four cards, each depicting one of the 25 starter Pokémon found throughout the series’ history and printed with a 25th Anniversary logo. However, as these cards are available in both normal and foil versions, the total number of Pokémon cards needed to collect the entire set is 50.
The full list of cards are:
– Bulbasaur
– Scorbunny
– Pikachu
It’s worth noting that these cards aren’t the same as the jumbo-sized First Partners series cards that are also being released to celebrate the 25th Anniversary. Those cards will be released in monthly batches, starting with the Sword and Shield starters in March, and ending with the Red and Blue starters in October.
How To Get The McDonalds Pokémon Cards
This is where it gets a bit tricky. In theory, the pack of four cards should be given away with each Happy Meal, just like the usual free toy. Currently, the promotion is limited to The United States, though a Canadian equivalent is rumored. McDonalds nor the Pokémon Company have given an end date for the promotion.

Not Worth Much: Pikachu Hidden Fates
The low price of the Pikachu from the Hidden Fates set is a bit ironic given how hot this set was upon its first release and how astronomically expensive some of the cards from the set are. Hidden Fates was intended to be a “mini” set of sorts. It included many reprints of cards from prior sets with a Shiny counterpart of the Pokémon included in the art. There were a few new cards included too, but they were less of a selling point.
However, the basic non-Shiny Pikachu from the set isn’t worth much, with the non-holo version going for $.08 and a foil version going for about half a buck.
Japanese Promo Card Tamamushi University Magikarp Trophy

Its design was drawn by legendary Pokémon artist Ken Sugimori and features a Magikarp leaping into the air while firing a lightning bolt. These promo cards are only for those who participate in a two-day tournament event in Osaka, Japan. However, only players who win at least one round can get this card. To join in this game, firstly, you have to finish the Tamamushi University Hyper Test, which was briefly published in a select number of magazines. We dont know what exactly the questions are about, but in general, it was about Pokémon. After finishing the test, 1000 fans with the highest scores would be invited to the Osaka event.

Pokmon Japanese Promo Tropical Mega Battle Tropical Wind

The card is only for those who participated in the Tropical Mega Battle held in Hawaii back in 1999. Players from all over the world have equal chances to join in this tournament which changed the rules in 2001. Nowadays, people know it by the name Japanese World Championship. Although its rare, its still a basic trainer card that orders players to flip the coin to determine the result of an event. On the open market, there are very few of these Tropical trophy cards. They arent almost as pristine as this PSA-rated GEM MINT 10 version. The card was even sold for over $65,000.

About two weeks ago, 34-year-old Oregon resident Kalvin Foley wanted to buy a rare Pokémon card on eBay. It was a rainbow Vmax card featuring Charizard, one of the most popular Pokémon. He was attempting to win it at the end of an auction, one of the most adrenaline-inducing parts of bidding. The card, which started off at $100, began to steadily increase. It jumped to $250. Then $300. Then $375.
Im just watching it throughout the day, Foley recounted. When the 1-minute countdown began, he entered in his max bid of $425. And as soon as I did that, I think everybody else did, because it went from $375 all the way up to, like $550, he said.
Now, he thought, hed never be able to get the card. Foley said that only a year ago, it might have been worth around $250-$300 roughly half the price.
