Pokmon Sword/shield: How To Gigantamax
The release of Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced two new mechanics to the world of Pokémon called Dynamax and Gigantamax. Dynamax is a phenomenon wherein a Pokémon increases in size and stats becoming more powerful. A Dynamaxed Pokémons moves will become Max Moves which are stronger than normal attacks and have guaranteed effects. Gigantamax, on the other hand, is also a phenomenon wherein a Pokémon increases in size and stats but the Pokémon will also have a change in appearance. Gigantamaxed Pokémon, aside from having Max Moves, will also gain access to a G-Max Move which is particular to a specific species of Pokémon. Gigantamax and Dynamax both last for three turns.
How To Use Gigantamax:
You can’t just Gigantamax anywhere, unfortunately. If you want to show off and use your new Gigantamax Pokémon, here is how you can.
Select this option to unleash your epic G-max moves and watch your Pokémon power up to the extreme!
How To Tell If A Pokmon Can Gigantamax
You can’t simply look at a Pokémon and tell whether or not it has the capability to Gigantamax. To find out if your new pocket pal has that unique ability, do the following:
If the Pokémon has a red X symbol next to its name, as per the screenshot below, then it can Gigantamax.

How Do You Unlock Gigantamax
If you havent gotten ahead of yourself and turned your first set of Max Mushrooms into Max Soup for your starter Pokemon, all you need to do now if give the Dojo cook your three Max Mushrooms and one Max Honey. Select Urshifu as the recipient of this special bowl of Max Soup and youll unlock Gigantamax Urshifu.
What Are Gigantamax Pokmon Sword And Shield
Gigantamax Pokémon are Pokémon that, when they Dynamax, not only grow in size, but change form completely.
Your Alcremie, for example, will go from being a cute little blob of sentient cream to a towering cake monstrosity.
Only a specific list of Pokémon have the ability to Gigantamax. You’ll know if you’ve caught a Pokémon with the Gigantamax factor, because, when you look at its summary, there will be a special red X symbol between its name and the picture of the Poké Ball it lives in.
Due to this each Gigantamax form has its own entry in the Pokédex, through, thankfully, these entries are not required for completing the Pokédex.
Like Dynamaxing, Gigantamaxing will only last for three turns, but the Gigantamax Pokémon will also be able to use a unique move, called a G-Max move, that have a number of special effects.
Finally, it’s important to note that, while you can breed Pokémon that have the Gigantamax factor with other Pokémon, both Gigantamax and not, the baby Pokémon they create won’t be able to Gigantamax.
Sadly, you can’t breed your Gigantamax Pokémon army.

Where To Find Gigantamax Pokmon
As of now, Gigantamax Pokémon are only obtainable through mystery gifts and special events Eevee, Pikachu, and Meowth as well as Max Raid Battles. None of the Pokémon you encounter in the overworld, including the Wild Area, are capable of Gigantamaxing, making them extremely rare.
However, Game Freak has plans to make some Gigantamax Pokémon easier to find, including a limited boost to the encounter rate for Gigantamax Butterfree up until early next year.
Can Every Pokmon Gigantamax
A lot of the discussion around the new Alola forms has been about whether or not theyre fully-fledged Pokémon additions to the roster.
For example, the argument that Exeggutor is just another version of Exeggcute, or that the evolutions are just regional variants. While there is some merit to this argument when it comes to some of these forms, especially when you look at the original games in which they debuted, it does not hold for others.

Know Where You Caught It
You will receive a Dynamax from Professor Magnolia in the beginning of the game, which will allow you to trigger Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon. There are certain ways to obtain Pokémon that are capable of Gigantamaxing, and if you didnt get your Pokémon in one of these ways, it definitely cannot Gmax. You can obtain Gigantamax Pokémon through mystery gifts and special events. You can also get them from Max Raid Battles. None of the Pokémon you obtain in the overworld are capable of Gintamaxing.
The easiest way to get a Gigantamax Pokémon is by battling and catching them in Max Raid Battles with up to three other players. You can activate these types of raids by using a wishing piece on one of the Pokémon dens in the Wild Area. There is a 5% chance of a Pokémon appearing, and certain Pokémon appear in certain spots. If one appears, make sure that you battle it to reduce its health to zero so that you can catch it.
How Do You Know If A Pokmon Can Gigantamax
You may be tempted to go to one of the many fan-made websites that tell you about this mechanic, but we wont link them here because there is an even better way.
Using Pokémon Sun and Moons QR Scanner feature, youll be able to see whether or not any Pokémon you scan is capable of Gigantamaxing. Simply follow these steps:
Scan the QR Code for a Gigantamax Capable Pokémon .
Go to Festival Plaza and find the GTS. Click on it and search for Colorful. Select Other, choose Scan QR Code, and scan the code you just scanned.
If you did it right, there should be an option to trade for the Pokémon on top of your current list. If you do not see this option, then that means the Pokémon is NOT Gigantamax capable.

How To Change Dynamax Pokemon To Gigantamax
You will need to feed your Pokemon a hearty meal of Max Soup to change a Dynamax Pokemon to Gigantamax when the Isle of Armor expansion drops.
Thats the current assumption, anyway. Since there was only a glimpse of the Max Soup in the most recent Isle of Armor trailer, its still unknown how well get our hands on the item or the ingredients needed to create it.
With curry recipes the closest thing to a potential Max Soup meal you need to mix key ingredients with berries to make the best and most effective dish. Its likely that putting the soup together will require the same type of process, though we dont know just yet what ingredients will go into the pot. Thats something that should be revealed when the DLC debuts.
How To Get Gigantamax Pokemon
As mentioned, only special members of certain Pokemon species will be able to Gigantamax. So far, we only know of one way to obtain them, and thats by participating in Max Raid Battles. The official Gigantamax page also says these individuals are …very rare–finding them wont be easy!
Dont worry, Max Raid Battles can be done without going online – your teammates will simply be NPCs instead of real players.

Though nothing is confirmed, we also assume special Gigantamax Pokemon will be available as Event Pokemon, similar to how some special Mega Evolution Pokemon were given out through special means – like Ash Greninja in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Finding Brilliant Pokmon Can Lead To Finding Shiny Pokmon
Sometimes you may see Pokémon that give off a special aura. Thesewonderful Pokémon are known as Brilliant Pokémon, and youll find theyretypically higher level than the average Pokémon in the area. Theyll also knowan unusual move, such as an Egg Move, and theyll have the highest possible individualstrength for at least two or three of their stats. Youll earn some Watts eachtime you defeat a Brilliant Pokémon, with higher-level Pokémon rewarding moreWatts.
You can quickly find some excellent Pokémon by encounteringas many Brilliant Pokémon as you can. As you catch or defeat more and morePokémon of the same species, youll gradually become more likely to findBrilliant Pokémon and Shiny Pokémon of that species in the future. You dontneed to find these Pokémon consecutively, and you can see how many times youveencountered a species by checking your Pokédex.

How Do I Battle And Capture Gigantamax Pokemon
Gigantamax Pokemon are considerably stronger than regular Max Raid Pokemon in most cases, and their G-Max moves can make things even trickier. Make sure you’re going in with a powerful Pokemon that has a typing advantage and resistance against the Gigantamax Pokemon you’re facing.
It’s also helpful to join up with friends to fight Gigantamax Pokemon. The game’s NPC trainers that join you when you’re alone are random and often bring weak or disadvantageous Pokemon to the battle. You don’t want to be teamed up with the one who brought a Magikarp to a Gigantamax fight, so try to use the search function to pair up with other trainers or friends as often as possible.

What Is The Difference Between Dynamax And Gigantamax Pokemon
Gigantamax Pokemon are a unique form of Dynamax Pokemon that are mostly the same in terms of stats, moves, and abilities, but with two main exceptions. The first is that their appearance when Dynamaxed is different from just a larger form of the Pokemon: Gigantamax Pokemon have unique visuals that are even more intimidating or awesome than usual Dynamax Pokemon. The second is that they gain a special “G-Max” move when Dynamaxed that normal Pokemon don’t have.

They limit the Pokémon that are capable of Gigantamaxing, so yours will need to be one of the following:

This special Pokemon will appear in Max Raid Battles for a limited time.
Trainers, from now until March 8, 2020 at 5 p.m. PT, you have the chance to encounter Gigantamax Toxtricity in Max Raid Battles in Pokemon Sword and Shield.
When in its Gigantamax form, this special version of Toxtricity can use a powerful move called G-Max Stun Shock, which can cause damage, as well as inflict poison or paralysis on every opponent. Plus, this Gigantamax Pokemon is even more special due to the fact that it comes in two forms. Amped Form Toxtricity can be found in Pokemon Sword, while Low Key Form Toxtricity can be found in Shield.

How To Get Gigantamax Flapple And Appletun
But first, if you want to beat them you have to encounter them. Heres how to get Gigantamax Flapple and Appletun in your Pokemon Sword and Shield raids. Or really, how to increase the odds of getting them since theres no guaranteed method just yet. In your own game you can only encounter one of them, based on which version you have. Flapple will pop in raid dens for those with Pokemon Sword and Appletun will appear in Shield. Visit all of your raid dens every time they have a light shining out of them to see if either appears. If not, youll need to complete every available raid in order to refresh them and potentially spawn one.
Of course, your own raids arent the only option. You can also team up with others both friends and random players. Be sure you know the trick to refresh stamps and keep an eye out then join as soon as you can. Once there youll want to read the next section to find out the best counters to choose.
What Is Gigantamax Anyway
Gigantamax is a new form that certain Pokémon can take in the Galar region of Gen VIII. This form blows up your Pokémon to enormous proportions, changes their look, and gives them crazy strong new moves. However, only a handful of species are even capable of Gigantamaxing, and only select individual Pokémon of those species have the ability. Most Gigantamax Pokémon up til now came from Max Raid Battles, or Mystery Gifts, but with the introduction of the Isle of Armor, any individual Pokémon whose species can Gigantamax can be upgraded to a Gigantamax Pokémon. Even better, the Gen VIII Starter Pokémon all have awesome new Gigantamax forms.
