ALL Shiny Hunting Methods in Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield – Shiny Hunting Guide

Overall, Shiny Hunting will require a ton of patience by the player. The best thing to do would be to passively play the game while doing something else in the background, like listening to a podcast. Shiny Hunting in BDSP can take players a few seconds to several years, depending on the odds.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.

What Is A Shiny Pokemon

A Shiny Pokemon is a Pokemon that has an alternate color scheme to their art. They do not possess a better set of stats in comparison to their non-shiny counterparts but are much rarer and sought after by most players of the games. Shiny Pokemon were introduced in the Second Generation of Pokemon but there was no real way to boost the odds for finding these rare Pokemon. This changed the more popular Shiny Pokemon became. You will know if you come across a Shiny Pokemon as it will be an alternate color from the non-shiny version but will also emit a shining set of sparkles upon your encounter with it and every time you send the Pokemon into battle.

Fishing For Brilliant Pokmon

You can also find Brilliant Pokémon by fishing in the WildArea. The number of times you’ve battled any one species won’t matter at allfor fishing. Instead, you’ll need to defeat many Pokémon consecutively, nomatter which species appears.

Successful hooks
Brilliant Pokémon have 6.6× the likelihood of appearing
25+ Brilliant Pokémon have 16.6× the likelihood of appearing

If you keep getting bites and defeating your catches, you’llstart to find more and more Brilliant Pokémon. But bewareif you fail to reel aPokémon in, or if you catch a Pokémon, run away from a Pokémon, leave the area,or turn off your game, then the chain will break. After 25 successful hooks, you’llcap out at over 16 times the initial odds of finding a Brilliant Pokémon, so itcan be quite rewarding to build a big streak.

Basics Of Pokemon Sword And Shield Shiny Hunting

So you want to start shiny hunting in Pokemon Sword and Shield? There’s a few things you need to know before you start. Firstly, catch combos don’t exist in Galar while chaining is still a thing that we’ll get onto shortly, catch combos were first introduced with Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu & Eevee. You don’t need to worry about catch combos specifically here, because shiny chains in Pokemon Sword and Shield work differently.

To begin shiny hunting, you first need to choose which Pokemon you want to hunt. Whether it’s a Wooloo or a Wailord, pick your target then go to the location that particular pocket monster spawns the most .

Essentially, you need to keep battling the Pokemon of your choice and either catch them or knock them out. The higher your tally of that specific species you’ve battled, the more likely it is to be shiny. You can check how many you’ve battled under the relevant Pokedex entry. While that’s the basic gist of things, read on to understand how it all works and how to shiny hunt more effectively.

Grand Underground Shiny Hunting Guide

Pokemon sword Shiny hunting

The Grand Underground is the biggest change made to BDSP over the original Diamond and Pearl, and it has countless new mechanics, some of which can affect shiny hunting. The new systems are somewhat confusing, but datamines have given us everything we need to break it down and work out how to catch shinies in the Grand Underground.

One quick point to note about the Grand Underground is that for some reason, the capture odds of Pokemon are drastically reduced, meaning they’re much harder to get in a Ball. If you’re hunting down there, plan ahead by bringing a false swiper, a paralyzer, and a lot of Poke Balls, as you don’t want to miss out on the shiny due to harder-than-usual catch rates.

Another way to counter the increased difficulty is with the Catching Charm, which works like the Shiny Charm but for catching, boosting catch rates across the board. You can obtain this charm from Morimoto in the Game Director’s house at the Hotel Grand Lake, once you’ve caught all 150 Pokemon in the Sinnoh Regional Dex.

The first part of shiny hunting in the Grand Underground comes from the “lightstone” effect, which occurs when you reach 40 Diglett in your total. You might have noticed this counter below your map as you explore, and it tracks the Diglett you’ve gotten while underground . This counter resets when you leave the Grand Underground, so keep that in mind.

One Last Thing: Square And Star Shinies

Sword & Shield introduced a minor variation to Shiny Pokémon. Besides having different colorations, some Shinies will also have a slightly different animation when they appear, either a star-based pattern or a square-based one.

Initially, Square Shinies are rarer as they appear in 1 out of 16 Shiny encounters. However, Encounter Chaining will eventually cause that number to flip so that Square Shinies are 15 out of every 16 Shiny encounters. This can make finding a Star Shiny more difficult as you cant rely on Encounter Chaining in order to increase the odds of encountering a Star Shiny in the wild.

How To Shiny Hunt The Regis In Pokmon Sword And Shields The Crown Tundra Expansion

You have several options to pick from, which is pretty rare.

Shiny hunting is a big part of the Pokémon experience if you plan on doing more than just beating the games and completing the Pokédex. And one thing that shiny hunters love is static encounters that arent shiny locked.

A static encounter is when you can interact with an NPC, item, or Pokémon in the overworld and either enter a battle or receive the same Pokémon without any RNG.

In Pokémon Sword and Shields The Crown Tundra expansion, for example, there are several static encounters with the Regis, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizon. And you can easily jump into shiny hunting some of them right as you finish talking with Peony in Freezington.

The Regis are almost instantly accessible to you as you venture around the tundra. The fastest method for shiny hunting them is better than most strategies you could hope for, mainly because knocking out or running from a Regi wont force you to soft reset.

Many players have been talking about how defeating the Regis and then reactivating the floor patterns is quicker than soft-resetting, which could be true for some. So if you prefer this method, simply bring strong Pokémon that can easily defeat each Titan and you can quickly reset the encounter to try and re-roll for a shiny.

Shiny Legendaries In Dynamax Adventures

BEST Way To Hunt Shiny Fossil Pokemon In Pokemon Sword & Shield!

All Pokémon includng Legendaries can be Shiny in Dynamax Adventures. These have a higher Shiny rate as well:

  • Odds for every Pokémon to be Shiny is 1/300 without the Shiny Charm, and 1/100 with the Shiny Charm. Shiny odds are calculated when the Dynamax Adventure ends, just before the selection screen.
  • This means if you catch all four Pokémon in a Dynamax adventure, you have roughly a 4/100 = 1/25 chance for a Shiny.
  • All Shiny Pokémon are Star Shinies.

However, soft-resetting is not feasible you have to do the full Dynamax Adventure to find out if a Pokémon is Shiny or not.

Firstly, you have to battle your way to the Legendary boss and defeat it. After catching it , only on the catch summary screen will you see if it is a Shiny or not.

You can only take one caught Pokémon out of the Dynamax Adventure, so if you do not take the Legendary then it will respawn. Players are limited to one of each Legendary per game. As you need to go through the Dynamax Adventure again for your next chance, this may be a timely process.

Pokemon From Sos Calls

When battling wild Pokemon in the Alola region, there’s a chance they’ll call for help, causing ally Pokemon to show up. Knocking out several allies in a row will cause more and more of the ally species to arrive, and the shiny odds will improve as the chain gets higher and higher.

The simplicity and speed of this make it a fantastic hunting method if there’s a shiny you like the look of, give some SOS hunting a go and, if you’re lucky, you’ll have the special rare Pokemon in no time.

Max Raid Shiny Pokmon

There exists one other method for hunting Shiny Pokémon, and its from Max Raid battles. As explained in this video, the best way involves manipulating the date system of your Nintendo Switch, and comes down to whether a particular Den housing Max Raid Pokémon will have Pokémon set as Shiny or not. It takes advantage of the fact that all attributes of a Pokémon possible to be found in a Den are set upon using a Wishing Piece for four days. This wont work for promoted Gigantamax-Pokémon, and if you want multiple Shiny Pokémon, this method relies on you resetting the game multiple times, allowing friends invited to the Max Raids to catch them for you, and trading any spares to you afterwards.

Beforehand, turn off the auto-save option, and turn the text speed to a lower setting. The steps are as follows :

  • Save the game in front of a Den.
  • Change the date forward by one day, three times .
  • Check if the Pokémon is Shiny. If yes, celebrate!
  • If not Shiny, reload the game, move forward one day , and save the game.
  • Repeat the above steps until you find a Shiny!

So while encountering 500 of the same Pokemon will increase the odds of you finding a shiny, that isn’t the same as shiny chaining. If you encounter and then defeat or catch up to 25 of the same Pokemon species in a row, the odds of finding a shiny are increased even further. If you stumble into one that isn’t the same species, make sure you run away and don’t catch it or let it faint, because your chain will be reset.

Once you hit a chain of 25, that’s the maximum you can shiny chain in Sword and Shield. Combine all three methods and your odds of encountering a shiny will increase drastically, from the base 1/4096 to 1/455.

    How To Catch Shiny Pokmon

To increase your odds of running into Shiny Pokémon, there are two things you have to remember: how many of that specific Pokémon you have battled and how many you currently have in a Catch Combo.

Catch Combos are how many of the same Pokémon youve caught in a row. If you are hunting for a Shiny Caterpie, you should go to where Caterpie spawn and catch as many in a row as you can. Run from other Pokémon you may run into, and focus on catching Caterpie. Catch Combos stop adding to your Shiny chance after you catch 25, but doing this dramatically increases your Shiny chance from 1/4096 to 1/2048, according to Serebii.net.

Battle Count also is important. The more Pokémon of the specific species you have battled, the higher your chance of finding a Shiny will be. After battling over 100 of one species of Pokémon, your chances to find a Shiny increase by 2.5% when paired with Catch Combos. Continuing to battle up to 500 Pokémon further increases your chance of finding a Shiny. You can check how many Pokémon youve battled using your Pokédex.

The last important thing to boost your Shiny chance is the Shiny Charm. You can only get this item from the Game Freak Game Director after completing the Pokédex. You can find him in Hotel Ionia in Circhester.

Using all three of these techniques can give you an approximately 1/455 chance of finding a Shiny, which is way better than the original Shiny rate.

    Shiny Hunting In Max Lair

The final method for finding a Shiny Legendary in Pokémon Sword and Shields Crown Tundra DLC is the one youll likely spend the most time on, and can be one of the most efficient Shiny Hunting methods the game has ever given us.

When you run through a Max Lair, its important to remember that the Pokémon you encounter and catch will not appear to be shiny until the adventure is over and the game lets you pick one to keep. At the end of the Max Lair youll be allowed to choose one Pokémon to keep.

If you had a successful run, captured three normal Pokémon throughout and captured the Legendary Pokémon, youll have four to choose from. This is a key moment, because youll need to look closely to see if any of the ones you caught are in their Shiny Form.

This is fairly obvious for some Pokémon, but more difficult to discern with the naked eye for others. To be sure, you can check the summary of the Pokémon and look for the red stars on the left that indicate it is a Shiny Pokémon.

Your odds are pretty good when doing a Max Lair, as youll have a 1 in 100 chance of each Pokémon you catch being in its Shiny Form. That gives you a decent 1% chance of catching a Shiny Legendary, and three more chances with the same odds of catching a regular Shiny Pokémon.

Make sure you keep something else that was caught, or nothing, so that youll have the chance to go after it again. After the Max Lair is over, youll be given the option to jot down where to find that Pokémon for next time.

    Keeping The Chain Going

The Chaining method can go hand-in-hand with the encounter method, as it will continually increase the number of Pokemon that the player has faced. The idea behind chaining is that players need to encounter 25 of the same Pokemon in a row without defeating or catching another type of Pokemon. If players run into another type of Pokemon they need to run or use an escape item to avoid breaking the chain. If players combine chaining, Shiny Charm, and the 500+ encounter method, the odds of a shiny Pokemon appearing go from 1/4096 to a whopping 1/455. This is a good alternative so hopefully players aren’t spending 60 hours trying to catch one Pokemon.

Shiny Pokemon are certainly a bragging right among many Pokemon fans, and thankfully there are several ways to get them. While they have no major impact on gameplay, fans like having special Pokemon that they hold dear, especially if they are key parts of their team. It’s the perfect way to show off that a trainer really likes a specific Pokemon species. While Sword and Shield made some pretty drastic changes to the Pokemon formula, thankfully shinies seem to be here to stay.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
