What Pokemon Cards Are Worth Money Top 13 Rare Pokmon Cards That Are Worth Ridiculous Money
You have a bunch of old Pokemon Cards lying around, and you want to know if theyre worth anything. If so, how much?
You need to know about how much your old Pokemon cards are worth today. Youll learn how much each edition of base set 1-7 is worth, as well as every other special edition release!
St Edition And Unlimited Edition:
The first print run of a set would have a special Edition 1 logo on the left side of the card, just below the card art. An enlarged example of this logo is shown here. The 1st edition print run would typically be very limited, and once sold out, would no longer be available for sale. In fact, the first print runs of a set were officially called Limited Edition.
To meet super-high demand from the public, an Unlimited edition version would then be printed. Unlimited edition cards dont have the Edition 1 logo on the left side. Typically, a 1st edition card will be worth more than an unlimited edition card. Often this price difference can be quite significant.
Pokemon Players Club Shiny Espeon: $2000
If you ever wanted proof about how much a Pokemon cards price can change just because of the Pokemon on it, you need to look further than the Pokemon Players Club Shiny Espeon. This card is almost identical in story to the Umbreon card you saw just a moment ago, but required only 40,000 experience points instead of 70,000.
Despite being more available, Troll and Toad has this card for a slightly higher price of just under $2000. This is likely because Espeons shiny form is more noticeable than Umbreons, since the bright neon-green fur is a lot more distinctive and Espeon has its own unique degree of popularity.

What Pokemon Cards Are Worth Money
Pokémon cards are worth money. As you might already know, Pokémon is one of the most successful franchises in history, and until recently was still growing stronger.
Even now it has millions of fans around the world , which support it through buying all sorts of products related to this franchise.
One of these products are the Pokémon cards, which many children and adults collect. In addition to this, some fans play Pokémon battles with these cards, while others simply appreciate the beautiful designs of the cards.
As a result of all these factors combined, it is no surprise that there are some rare Pokémon cards that can be worth a lot of money.

How Much Are Old Japanese Pokemon Cards Worth
The Japanese Base Set was released in 1996, a solid three years before the English version.
Commended in the Pokemon community for their quality, old Japanese Pokemon cards are sought after items for any collector.
However, their value is affected by a couple of factors.
Unlike the English version where booster boxes contained 36 packs and roughly 12 holographic cards. Japanese Base set booster boxes contained 60 packs and the pull rates on holos are known to be as high as 50%.
As youd expect, this drives the value down compared to their English counterparts.
However, there is also a well-known printing error with Japanese base set, where they missed off the rarity symbol from the bottom right corner of the cards.
If youre lucky enough to own these cards, then they are extremely valuable and command a premium.
Pokemon then decided to print future vintage Japanese sets like Jungle, Fossil and Team Rocket with a holographic card in every pack.
Although these were fun to open, it also took away some of the excitement, rarity and value.
The main thing that combats this though, as mentioned above is the quality of the cards.
Card centering, print lines, and edge-wear is less common, therefore its easier to obtain a high score when getting Japanese cards graded. The higher the grade, the higher its value of course.
How To Find The Value Of Your Cards
Taking your old cards out of the closet and researching to find their current value is the most common way people are getting back into Pokémon. When trying to figure out a cards value, make sure to follow these steps:
Step 1. Find the year of the card. Check the bottom year of the card.
Step 2. Find the set the card belongs to. If there is no logo on the right side, its Base. Every other set has an indicator.
Step 3. Identify the card with the name and number in the set.

Lugia 1st Edition Neo Genesis
- Release Date: 2000
- Grading: BGS Pristine 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $144,300
Similar to Mewtwo, Lugia was an iconic Legendary for many children who grew up with the series in the 00s. So it should come as no surprise that its debut as a Pokemon card was a major hit.
While a 1st Edition Lugia broke records by selling for a mind-blowing $129,000 in 2020, a Beckett graded 10 version of the item sold for $144,300 at a PWCC auction in May 2021. BGS grades a lot harder than PSA, making this pristine Pokemon card one of only three in the entire world.
Are First Edition Pokmon Cards Worth Anything
In the present day, the first edition card is still extremely valuable and was the tenth card in the set. There are currently 80 PSA 10 graded copies of the Mewtwo card, and they’ll easily sell within the five-figure range. Long before The Pokemon Company solidified the TCG competitive scene into the World Championships in 2004, one of Japans earlier iterations of the contest was known as the Tropical Mega Battle. In 1999, the tournament was held in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Only 50 players from various countries around the world were invited to compete against one another. Because various Trophy Pokemon cards were given out at the event, the Tropical Wind iteration is incredibly unique. - Release Date: 1996
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $55,000

A Venusaur from this original batch went up for sale at PWCC Auctions on November 18th, 2021, and sold for a jaw-dropping $55,000 a record for the beloved Kanto starter Pokemon. According to PSA, the grade 10 collectible is only one of 5 to exist in the entire world.
As if this collectors item wasnt special enough, the casing on the outside was also autographed by the cards original artist Mitsuhiro Arita. This is truly a one-of-a-kind artifact that any Venusaur fan would die to have in their collection.

Holographic Shadowless Mewtwo: $20000
While the other Kanto starters dont come close to Charizard in the realm of First Edition cards, its hard to ignore the second-place winner off of its fame in the series. Most Pokemon fans are plenty aware of Mewtwo from the original Pokemon movie, and as a result cards featuring the character will often go for record-high prices in any set.
Much like the First Edition Charizard mentioned earlier, Mewtwo has its own Holographic and Shadowless version that PSA Collector has seen sold for at least $20,000, putting it far above Venusaur and Blastoise but still far below everyones favorite Fire-type tyrant of the skies.
Should I Sell My Pokemon Cards Individually Or As A Complete Collection
If you have a lot of Pokemon cards, its probably not worth selling them individually, unless theyre all rare cards.
As a general rule, you will get more if you sell the cards individually, but it will take longer to list and sell them. If you dont have a lot of time on your hands, its fine to list your whole Pokemon card collection as a bulk lot. Alternatively, you can pull out the rarest cards and sell them separately to make a bit of extra money.
If selling your Pokemon collection as a bulk lot of cards, its very important to get good pictures of the rarest cards, so that people can see what you have.

Tamamushi University Magikarp Trophy Promo
- Release Date: 1998
- Grading: PSA Gem Mint 10
- Pokemon card value at auction: $66,100
In 1998, Shogakukans Magazines in Japan offered a contest for school students. Fans that took the various tests offered in the publication could send them back to the company to have them graded.
Those studious enough to pass with high scores were then invited to a special conference held in Osaka of that year. Once there, the children got to participate in a unique Pokemon card battle tournament. Winners of the rare contest ultimately received the Magikarp Trophy Pokemon card Promo.
Due to the insane obscurity of how the TCG item was given out, its easily one of the rarest Pokemon cards on our list. It was not very surprising then when the Trophy collectible went up for auction in February 2021 and sold for $66k at PWCC.
How To Appraise And Sell Your Collection
Once you take some time to learn about the cards that you have and what their potential value might be, you might find it’s time to sell.
If you are not an experienced trading card reseller, I would highly discourage you from selling cards directly to consumers. There are many risks that come into play when selling cards online, including inaccurate listings, condition disputes, and the possibility of unintentionally selling fake cards, which might be hard to spot without the knowledge and experience to authenticate cards yourself.
Selling cards online also requires a significant time commitment, shipping and packaging costs, and listing fees that might leave you feeling discouraged if you don’t have the process and infrastructure needed to mitigate these factors.
