Niantics Upcoming Virtual Pet Ar Game Sounds Like Pokmon Go Crossed With Pikmin Bloom

HARRY POTTER: WIZARDS UNITE Trailer (2019) Pokémon GO like Harry Potter Mobile Game

Youll raise and breed adorable creatures

Niantic has just announced a brand-new collection-based augmented reality game. Seeing that this is just about the only style of game the developer creates, it comes as no surprise. What is surprising is that theres no brand attached this is a fresh creation directly from Niantic, known as Peridot, and it would appear that pet rearing is a focus. Peridot offers Tamagotchi-like mechanics where youll raise and unlock new forms of adorable pets, combined with daily walks, and it will enter soft-launch on Android and iOS sometime soon.

The above teaser trailer offers a quick glimpse of a few adorable Peridots in real-world settings. This is more a cinematic than an actual trailer, as no gameplay is shown, though its still early days. Luckily Niantic has shared a few screenshots illustrating the current UI. More or less, Peridot looks like a Niantic AR game, cute creatures and all.

So far, we know breeding will play a primary role, more than likely taking a page out of Pokémon GOs book. Also, similarly to Pikmin Bloom, you can take your Peridot on daily walks. So it would seem Niantic is taking the lessons learned from previous releases to implement them in this original title.

Out now in the US, the Harry Potter: Wizards Unite augmented reality game will be familiar to anyone whos played the wildly successful Pokemon Go and even Niantics first game, Ingress. Relying on your phones GPS, you move around the physical world and interact with beasts, objects, points of interest and other witches and wizards you come across on your games map.

The game, first announced in 2017, is a joint effort from WB Games San Francisco and Niantic under the Portkey Games label. The game is out now in the US for iPhone and iPad and Android devices, coming to the UK on Friday, June 21, and to international territories soon after.

Back in the spring, the Harry Potter wizarding AR mobile game was far enough along in development that Niantic invited a handful of journalists to its offices to get an update and then play a prerelease version. Following out short runthrough, Niantic made the game available for beta testing in New Zealand and Australia.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is one we highly recommend for fans of Pokémon GO because its actually developed by the same people, Niantic Studios. Thats clear when playing the game too, but not in a way that would have you feeling that its too similar. From the start, you pick whether you want to be a Professor, Auror, or Magizoologist. Instead of other peoples Pokémon, here you battle mythical beasts. Instead of Pokéstops, there are Inns. There are a bunch of real-world locations where you can discover artifacts and meet characters from the franchise.

Lessons Learned From Pokemon Go

What’s evident about Wizards Unite, though, is how much Niantic has learned from its early struggles with the game’s predecessor. Pokemon Go was famously short on content there were plenty of Pokemon to find in the world, but in its early days, expected elements of the Pokemon experience like trading and raids were missing. It would be months or years before quality-of-life improvements and additional content made it into the game, but today, Pokemon Go includes features like story quests and increased social support that make it feel more complete.

Wizards Unite, by comparison, is launching with what feels like a more robust content package. For starters, there’s a smattering of quest objectives to complete right out of the gate that boost your experience gains and dish out rewards like potion-brewing materials. You can immediately start adding people to your friend list, and playing along with them in some activities also offers greater in-game rewards. There are multiplayer “Wizarding Challenges” found at specific locations called Fortresses, battles to fight against dark wizards and other creatures by casting spells and using potions, and a Profession system that lets you unlock abilities in RPG-like skill trees, which can make you more effective against certain types of enemies.

Harry Potter Game: Wizards Unite Is Like Pokemon Go For The Potterverse

There’s some Sirius-ly good news for fans of witchcraft and wizardry, the Harry Potter-themed follow up to Pokémon Go is out this Friday.

The game is called Wizards Unite, and uses augmented reality to bring the fictional Harry Potter world into the real world.

The new game was developed by Niantic Labs, which created Pokémon Go. That game, which was released in 2016, allows players to find and capture popular pocket monsters. The Harry Potter game works in a similar way.

Players can use their iOS or Android phones to see mythical creatures appear as if they were living in the real world.

So how much do we know about the game so far?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Beats Pokemon Go Every Way But One

Pokemon Go was an instant hit, but Harry Potter: Wizards Unite does AR far better overall.

I’m standing on a corner near my office in San Francisco. A few blocks away, I can see pointy fortresses and rounded greenhouses. Nearer, a smoking chimney of a tall, blue-roofed inn signals something’s cooking inside. Owls and colorful paper airplanes glide by, and frequently an object appears near to me, including a bit of frog brain and ginger root. I’m playing the AR game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and I’m immersed in the world of Harry Potter, Hagrid and other wizards and witches — along with Muggles and No-Majs.

My view is not that different from standing on the same street corner in Pokemon Go, next to a blue Pokestop, where I can see red and yellow gyms a few blocks away and Pokemon spawning at my feet. I’ve played Pokemon Go on and off for three years and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite since it was released early last Thursday, but in the time I’ve spent with the new mobile game codeveloped by Niantic and WB Games, it already feels different, because of how it makes use of AR on Android and iOS.

Niantic To Release Pokmon Go Style Harry Potter Mobile Game This Week

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite – 15 Minutes Of Pokemon Go-Style Gameplay

Pokémon Go creator Niantic has announced that the release date for Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, its latest free-to-play, location-based augmented reality game, will be as soon as this Friday, 21 June.

As in the phenomenally successful app Pokémon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will have its players travelling to real-world locations to hunt out monsters that appear on their device’s screen, only this time from JK Rowling‘s wizarding world.

While Niantic had previously announced that the game would release in 2019 –and has been in open beta in Australia and New Zealand– few were expecting the game to be released so soon.

It does, however, tally close to Pokémon Go’s release at the start of July in 2016. The summer months were kind to the pocket monster hunting app, as it quickly became a global phenomenon. By the start of 2019, Pokémon Go has been downloaded over 1bn times and has made over $2.3bn in revenue for Niantic and The Pokémon Company.

Niantic and Warner Bros, its partner on Wizards Unite, will hope that this Harry Potter themed version will garner similar attention this summer. The game builds on the mechanics and location data in Pokémon Go, but has its own twists on the concept. Rather than joining a team, each player of the game works for the ‘Statue of Secrecy Task Force’, tasked with hunting down ‘Foundable’ artifacts and creatures littered across the world that must be made safe.

When Is It Coming Out

The game is out now in the US for iPhone and Android devices, coming to the UK on Friday, June 21, and to international territories soon after. Niantic has been beta testing the game in New Zealand and Australia.

Jonathan Knight, Studio Head of WB Games San Francisco, promises that Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be a deep role-playing “forever game,” with the Calamity forming a multiyear story arc.

At the event, I may have seen a bit of the arc. During the briefing I saw a quick reference to “The London Five,” four Ministry of Magic workers and one “Daily Prophet” reporter who are missing. The missing five didn’t appear during gameplay but may show up at some point in the story.

Gyms Or Greenhouses: Structures In Harry Potter Give You More To Do

A Portkey transports you to a mysterious room you can walk around.

The Harry Potter: Wizards Unite map is dotted with inns, greenhouses, fortresses and even banners warning of dark-arts traces, and they all provide jumping-in points to the game. Tap an inn, for example, and you’re whisked into an AR dining room to gather food and replenish your energy to cast spells.

Inside the structures, dinner platters float, potted plants rotate in front of you, and you feel a bit like you’ve entered a magical room. And when you place a Portkey, you’re transported to a room in the Borgin and Burkes shop in Knockturn Alley. In this AR room, you can move around, walk up to and examine objects and gather five Wrackspurts to earn rewards.

Pokemon Go, with its pokestops and gyms, has fewer structures to engage with, and of the two, only gyms really feel like you’ve entered a room, to battle Pokemon. I can spin pokestops in my sleep.

Winner: Harry Potter: Wizards Unite offers a more diverse AR experience and feels more realistic. If the only new bit of AR the Harry Potter game offered was the room you reach via a Portkey, it’d be worth it.

Harry Potter Game From Pokmon Go Developer Is Shutting Down

Wizards Unite will close in January 2022.

Wizards Unite, the Harry Potter mobile game from Pokémon Go developers Niantic, is closing down.

The app plays a lot like its Pokémon cousin, with players finding magical objects and creatures out in the real-world. While no-one would have expected it to capture the lightning in a bottle success of Go‘s launch, which was a worldwide phenomenon, outlets paint a very bad picture overall: $40 million revenue since its 2019 launch, versus Go making $1 billion in 2021 alone so far.

Within its first 24 hours of release, it was installed on 400,000 devices, which paled in comparison to the 7.5 million installations of PokémonGo on its first day.
