So Ditto Hides As Other Pokmon
Yup! Ditto can transform into other Pokémon, and, so far, he’s only being encountered in the wild in his transformed state. That means you can’t see Ditto in Nearby or Sightings, and you won’t know if he’s spawned right next to you until you catch him.
It’s only then you’ll be greeted with an “Oh?” instead of a “Gotcha!” and the Pokémon you just caught will be revealed as Ditto. So, you gotta catch ’em all. Literally. Because you never know when the Pokémon you’re catching is actually a Ditto in disguise.
How Can Trainers Go About Finding This Well
First of all, Ditto cant be encountered outright. No matter how much walking any trainer does, they wont find any Ditto in the wild.
Instead, Ditto disguises itself as another Pokemon. Only after a trainer catches a Pokemon will it be revealed to be a Ditto or not.
While that sounds like searching for a needle in a rather large haystack, there is a limited choice of Pokemon that Ditto will disguise itself. Therefore, trainers can narrow their search instead of catching every Pokemon and hoping its a Ditto.
The full list of Pokemon which Ditto will disguise itself as for the Season of Mischief is as follows:
- Gastly
- Dwebble
- Foongus
Out of these Pokemon, shiny Ditto, in particular, could be disguised as Gastly, Drowzee, Teddiursa, and Dwebble.
One thing thats important to keep in mind is that if a trainer encounters a shiny Pokemon, it is guaranteed NOT to be Ditto. Only Pokemon in their normal sprite can be Ditto in disguise.
Sadly, theres no way of telling if a Pokemon will be Ditto either. The disguise looks exactly as a normal Pokemon would with no physical differences.
There is one way, however, that trainers can judge the likelihood of a Pokemon being Ditto. Looking at the list of Ditto disguises, they are all common Pokemon. Ditto, however, has a lower catch rate. This means that if its taking a couple throws to catch a Gastly or Drowzee, theres a good chance that its actually a Ditto.

One of the biggest changes in the Season of Mischief, which kicked off at the start of September 2021, is that Shiny Ditto will no longer be exclusive to the ticketed Pokemon Go Tour: Kanto Special Research.

How Does Catching A Ditto Work
Before you catch a Ditto in a Pokéball, theres no way to tell the Pokémon youre about to click on will turn into one. The only clue you have is knowing Dittos disguises. You want to keep up to date with those as much as possible.
Youll have to keep clicking on these Pokémon in the wild and try to catch them. Eventually, when you do catch it, youll receive this distinct animation after they go into a Pokéball.
If you see the Oh? above your Pokéball, youll then go to a different screen and see the Pokémon you caught transform into Ditto. The background also looks different from traditional Pokémon captures.
Outside of this brief animation, after youve captured a Ditto, theres no way to tell where the Pokémon is in the world. You might have a chance to capture one for a special research quest or an event one, but youll have to know its a reward beforehand. When youre told Ditto is a capture reward, then you have a standard Ditto encounter.
